Profile Starter's Guide

Hello, newcomers and long time members alike. As we here know, and you're likely to soon find out, some of our systems can be a bit confusing to a new player. Especially when you're starting out with your new profile. For that reason, I like to provide a guide, which I usually update and replace whenever we make an large changes. This guide is to starting your first character, and will walk you through each stage of the profile, explaining a few rules along the way. Please pay close attention, because the better your profile is from the start, the faster you can get into the RP proper. And, as always, if you see anything that seems to be missing or incorrect, or are just confused on any point of the profile, feel free to post in this thread with any questions you might have. Quoting myself or Gregar828 will get you the fastest and most accurate response. Questions about anything else should be directed to our dedicated Q&A thread, where someone should be along in short time to help you.

For this guide, I will walk you through the basic creation of a well known character from the manga proper. Uchiha Sasuke. Love him, Hate him, we all know him, making him the best option.

So, without further ado, to the profile!

Odd as it may seem, this little clump of formatting here often turns up the most problems in new profiles. It can be difficult at times to dig into it, and find where you're supposed to put your text. Some people have missed bits, ending with a mangled name, others have accidentally broken the format, ended with an ugly mass of text, and still more have missed it entirely.

Starting from the beginning, we have the color code, followed by a size modifier. Immediately after that, is the letter C. The C is what you need to replace, using the first letter of your first or last name, depending on whether you use Eastern or Western formatting. I'm using Eastern, as the character has a Japanese name, so I'm going to make that C, a U. Next we have a /size modifier, closing out the one from before, and an underline, and another size modifier. Following that we have “haracter”. This is not a secret code word, but simply the rest of the word Character, as you hopefully already noticed. As before, replace it with the rest of your name. In my case, chiha.

After another large clump of formatting, you'll find a lonely letter N. As you can probably guess, swap that with the start of your other name. For me, S. Another clump later, we find ame. Simply swap that out too, and your name is finished. For me, asuke. Now go back over it, just to be sure you haven't accidentally broken any of the formatting, and you're done with that mess!

Next you will find a small block of codes for your image, or, imgright codes. As you can guess, these will place whatever image you want to the rightmost side of the post. Keeping it over there shrinks the size of the post a bit, making it easier for us to read, so please don't change that around too much. All you have to do here, is copy an image link of your choice into that slot, where marked, and you're done! Make sure all that's in there is the link or nothing will show up.

And now with that out of the way, we get straight to the good parts. Who are you? All in all, this part is simple. Just fill in the spaces where it tells you with the right info, and you're golden. Try to make the info all match your picture though. You don't want to have a picture of a big fat guy if your profile says you're a skinny lady.

For name, use the same name as you used for the section above. That's all that is.

Nickname is an entirely optional bit. You can leave it blank for now, or just stick in anything at all people might call you that wouldn't count as a title. (Titles come later.) Don't actually expect anyone to call you by them though unless you mention them in game, or it's a common nickname for your chosen name. A good policy is to add nicknames to this as people call you by them in the RP.

Age. How old are you? Obviously most won't want to start a genin at eighty, or a kage at five. Just keep this number within reasonable limits, or be prepared to give very good reasons why it's not. And as always, make sure it matches your image.

Hair and eye color should both match your image if at all possible, since that's what people will look at to see who you are more than your actual profile. If your eyes change color due to a doujutsu or something else, what we want is your base eye color, when no changes are active.

Height. How tall are you? This can be surprisingly useful to know in game and will likely be referenced a lot in different situations. If you're describes as a big muscly guy at nine feet tall, you'll have a hard time expecting to blend into crowds without people pointing you out. Still, try to keep it realistic to your age. There aren't many six foot twelve year olds running around out there.

Body type is pretty much a summary of all the little physical traits we don't bother asking about about. Are you a big muscular dude? Or are you a scrawny little whip of a boy? There are some examples given, but you can put whatever you like here.

Distinguishing features are anything that make you stand out in a crowd. Do you have pure white hair despite being ten years old? Maybe you lost an arm in a recent battle, or have a birthmark the shape of a cow on your forehead. Anything that people can use to recognize you on sight, goes here.

That's all the basic fields, but if you feel the need, feel free to add more! Think you didn't get a good enough description in? Add a description field. Want to expound on your personality? Add it right in. Anything that falls under character traits can be added here, until you're satisfied.

Last in this section is Background. There are two ways of doing this. You can add it right in here, which is fine, or you can make a thread in the Stories of Our Lives: Shinobi Backgrounds subforum and put a direct link to it in the thread. On that note, I'll be mentioning direct links a lot, so if you don't know what those are, or just aren't sure how to make one, check out the short guide to that, here.

Back to the topic at hand, if you do put your background in the profile directly, and it seems to be getting long, you might want to enclose it in a spoiler to shrink the post size a bit. The spoiler codes are quite simple. Anything put within them vanishes inside a convenient button, which can be pressed to bring it back out. We use these all over the place here, simply because we love them.

Background
Sasuke grew up in the shadow of his older brother Itachi. Sasuke was largely neglected by his father. Sasuke looked up to his brother, but Itachi always seemed friendly yet distant. When Itachi grows increasingly distant from the clan, Sasuke's father begins to spend more with Sasuke, teaching him Gokakyu no Jutsu (Great Fireball Technique). Sasuke finally performed the jutsu in front of his father at age 6.

Then one day, when Sasuke was about 7 years old, he returned home to find his family massacred with Itachi standing over the bodies. His brother said:
"If you wish to kill me, hate me, detest me, and survive in an unsightly way. Run, run and cling to life. And one day, when you have the same eyes as me, come before me."

Years later, Sasuke is now one of the top scorers of the ninja apprenticeship school and the top Genin of the Hidden Leaf Village. He is also one of the two surviving members of the Uchiha clan, the once powerful ninja clan of the village that was destroyed by his older brother, Itachi. When Sasuke demanded a reason, Itachi told him he simply wanted to test his strength. As a result of his desire for vengeance against his brother, Sasuke became very dark and cold, caring for nothing else other than becoming stronger.

Now that we're done with character information, it's time to get to ninja information. Goodness, this section is huge isn't it? Don't worry though, it's the biggest in the entire profile, and we'll get it done quick enough, you'll see.

First thing's first, what village are you a member of? Before you go running straight for Konoha though, check and see if we've said anywhere that certain village might be closed, either temporarily to new members, or entirely. We've hit some rough patches in activity at times and had to close down villages to keep everyone close together. Don't worry if you can't find that info though. If you pick a bad village, the profile judge will let you know and give you a list of alternatives.

Organizations are a lot like villages, but you don't have to worry about this yet. New characters don't get to join an organization. Organizations are things like the canon Akatsuki or our Otogakure. Not quite a village, but a group of characters that work together towards a single goal. Organizations aren't crew controlled or operated either, so you can form your own if you want, you just need to find members. This is also a good time to note, Akatsuki does not exist in this guild, and never will as a crew run system. If you want to create it yourself, feel free to give it a try, but don't expect any crew backing or adjustments to systems and rules to help you along your mad quest.

Rank is simple. If you're making your first profile, and have not applied for, and been approved for, an autorank position, you start as a genin or academy student. Academy students are slightly weaker and have less rights than genin, and there's no real benefit to starting as one, since if you do you'll have to pass a test to be promoted again. So unless you just want that extra sense of fulfillment from going through your academy days, it's recommendable to just take Genin.

Titles are like nicknames, but different. These are the names you have earned for achievements in game. Titles include such things as a Kage position, or special names, such as “Copycat Kakashi”, “Densetsu no Sannin”, or “White Fang”. We do ask that you not start with any titles unless you're an autorank, for two reasons. One, it's slightly egotistic to give yourself a title, but more importantly, it's a bit odd for a barely trained genin to have a badass title.

Headband style, color, and location all refer to your, well, headband. If you have the typical headband shown in the manga, simply mark it as such. It you instead have dogtags, glove plates, or a tattoo on your eyelid, write that down. Color is simply what color it is, if applicable, and location is where you wear it.

Chakra color is really just an aesthetic field. Some bloodlines can see chakra, others have special techniques that take on the color of the user's chakra. This can be quite literally whatever you like, so long as it is a visible color. Matching it to your picture, or your personality, or even your element, are all good options if you don't have any ideas of your own.

The next fields are more important. Chakra level is what level your chakra is on, low, medium, or high, as well as your exact base modifier. For all the relevant information, see the Chakra System. What you're looking for is under Base Chakra Modifiers. The profile is a bit inaccurate, so go by the system instead.

Chakra Points is exactly how many points of chakra you actually have. This is your max level after all modifiers have been counted. If your modifiers fall at +4/10 or under, you can get that information from the chakra system directly under Individual Chakra Levels. If it's higher than that, and you can't understand the math, simply ask in the Q&A and we'll help you with it.

Chakra Elements are what elements you are capable of using. We have the five basic elements, Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, and Water, as well as several combination elements and some restricted elements, such as Ice and Sand, respectively. Genin are allowed to start with one natural element, and can attain another at chuunin, and a third at jounin rank. Some elemental bloodlines will allow you to start with more, but that information can be found in the bloodline thread. These three elements are the only ones that fall under the Chakra Elements field.

Extra Elements is for any other elements you've picked up. Perhaps you have a demon that gave you an extra, or your bloodline let you gain extra to another somehow. Some professions allow an extra element as a rank benefit. All of these options fall under Extra Elements.

Chakra Control adjusts how much you actually pay when performing a jutsu. Some benefits exist that grant reductions, while others penalize. All of these are placed here. If you don't understand how your benefits or penalties affect you, as usual, drop by the Q&A.

With that, we are at last out of the facts and figures, and into the actual choices that make your character who they are!

Types are the first thing we're looking at. Types give you a lot of different bonuses, introducing specialization in various areas. Make sure to think on this well, because the right combo can be extremely strong, while the wrong one could leave you a lot weaker than you expected. Types are optional, but highly recommended for their many excellent bonuses. It's preferable when adding them to write the name where indicated, and then just copy past the rest in as it is in the thread. The one thing you should not do is write your own version, or change the bonus, as we will notice.

Weaknesses, however, are not optional. These are the polar opposite of types, though they are found in the same thread. Weaknesses introduce penalties to your character, weakening certain areas in various ways. Like types, you need to choose these wisely, as the wrong set can cripple your character, while the right one can leave you very powerful indeed. The one rule to always keep in mind is that we don't allow conflicting weaknesses. If another aspect of your character has removed something, such as your taijutsu skill, you won't be allowed to take the Taijutsu Incompetence weakness. We call that sort of choice a “No Weakness Weakness”, and do not allow it. Try to make the weaknesses and types align, for the best result, that matches your RPC.

And last for this area, is bloodlines, clans, and demons. Bloodlines and clans can grant many useful bonuses and traits to your RPC, from extra elements, to unique powers, while Demons grant powers and abilities unique only to themselves, making your character one of a kind. Both are excellent options, though they also both require applications before you can use them.

As the profile states, you should remove the name of what you don't have, leaving only your own choice. If you have none of them, simply remove the entire section. Also as stated, you need to create a direct link to your approval and your bloodline's post in the bloodline thread, or the profile judge will not allow you to start with the bloodline on your profile.

Many bloodlines have stages of power you can unlock, most notably Sharingan. This section allows you to track what stage you are in. Make sure to provide direct links to unlocking that stage. You should also include links as proof of meeting the requirements of the stage, which will be shown in the bloodline thread. If you feel your links are piling up a bit too much, you can simply use spoiler codes again here. Demon Stages refer to the Perfect Host system, which should be referenced for that. Suffice to say, you'll want links for those too.

Transplants are like bloodlines, but attained from another RPC instead of at birth. We don't currently have a working system for transplants, so you should just ignore this for now. For future reference, when we do have a system, tracking them will work the same way as tracking bloodlines.

Phew, that really was long! Hope we didn't lose you along the way, cause we're not quite done yet! For now though, let's have another look at how Sasuke is doing. I should note that this won't perfectly match the real Sasuke, because he's ridiculously OP, thus actually attempting to give him weaknesses means I'll most likely not get a good match.

A small section again! Isn't that nice?

Alright, this section is very simple, but also very important. Your shinobi profession determines a lot about your character. Some get a lot of bonuses to certain areas, but might also be penalized for others. Each will also, in the future, have skills only they can use, which will also be pretty good. So, choose wisely. You should also be sure to match this to your types and profession, for the most optimized character possible.

First section, what profession have you chosen? Just write it's name beside the field given, just as before.

All professions give at least one or two base benefits. These apply to anyone who has that profession, and you take all of them. Simply copy the entire base benefit section of the profession, and paste it right in there. You can add the formatting too if you like, to make it pretty, but it's not required.

Rank benefits are a bit more complicated. You only get to choose one of these per rank. Just like base benefits though, copy the one you chose and paste it where indicated. You should only take one per rank, as stated, and you should only take ones you can currently use. If you're a genin, you shouldn't have a jounin benefit on your profile. It makes people think you have that skill, and you might want to change it later anyways. You shouldn't even just put it in and strike it out, just don't add it at all until you can use it.

The most observant of you will notice we have skipped a section. That is because there's not much to say about it. Talents are special traits a character can have, attained by taking on extra weaknesses. These are always unique to your character, and must be applied for like a custom. All the information on them can be found in their proper thread. If you have one, you just past it into the proper slot in it's entirety.

Now, onto this section! Skills cover all of your basic ninjutsu, genjutsu, taijutsu, and bloodline or demon jutsu. You don't actually get to do much here yet if you're not an autorank. Genin start with two jutsu, both from Universal E rank. These can be ninjutsu, genjutsu, or taijutsu. Two are provided by default in the format, though Henge is actually in the wrong slot as it is a genjutsu. You can swap them out, or keep them as your two jutsu.

Besides that, all you can really do is fill out the customizable sections. Below your universal Ninjutsu, you will find First Element: (Name of Element.) .
All you need to do with this, is change the (Name of Element) section to whatever your first element is. If you have a bloodline or Demon allowing you more elements, you can copy that entire section and paste it below the first element section. Your first three elements should have the “First Element” line changed to “Second” and “Third” respectively, and any Extra Elements should simply say Extra Element.

Further down you will find Bloodline/Clan/Demon Jutsu
Simply remove the extra titles as in the bloodline section of the profile, and you're done with that.

Below that, you will see (Bloodline/Clan/Demon name.).
All you have to do there is write the name of your bloodline, clan, or demon, and you're done with this section.

A couple things to keep in mind for later though. When you learn new jutsu, you must add them immediately to the proper section, with a direct link to the post where it was learned. With the currency system you can learn jutsu instantly (Almost) by purchasing them, as explained in the jutsu learning rules section of the chakra system thread. If you do so, a link to purchasing the jutsu is required.

We've skipped two sections this time. That is because Summons and Taijutsu/Weapon styles work in exactly the same way as other skills as far as your profile is concerned. They each have unique traits to them that one should find out from the rules of each. And, quite simply put, you don't need to worry about them yet. Genin can't get a summon unless they have a specific type, and you won't be allowed to have either at the start anyways. You can skip those sections entirely for now.

More important for the moment, are your missions. You actually still can't change anything here, but it is important enough for me to ramble on for a bit about. When you complete missions, you keep track of them here. Each mission grants MP, or Mission Points, according to it's rank, as described in the Mission System thread. I can't actually describe it here much better than it already is there, so suffice to say you need to track missions just like jutsu. Direct links to completion of the mission are required as proof of mission completion. MP are relevant to a few areas in the guild, such as gaining ranks, be it via direct promotion or guildwide exam, and also directly convert to currency.

Inventory, the last section of the profile. I expect you're as excited to be done reading this as I am to finish writing and get some lunch, so I'll try to be brief.

First thing here, is backpack. Now, you don't have to carry a backpack everywhere, or even have one at all if you don't want. If you do take it everywhere with you though, this is where you tell us what it is. It can be pretty much anything you want, from one of the suggestions, to a plastic shopping bag, to a cardboard box or suitcase, so long as it's a container that holds things. (You actually probably can't have a cardboard box.)

A tool pouch is pretty much just the little fanny packs ninja wear in canon. You can place it wherever you want, or even not have one. If you really want, you can also have several. I don't think anyone really cares.

Same thing with Kunai and Shuriken holsters, except these hold those specific weapons. Someday we might put actual rules and numbers to these things, but again, as many as you want or none at all, and anywhere you like.

Gold is our currency. Technically it's probably not gold, but that's what we used when we wrote the system, and it works for a reference. As the profile says, you start with 500 gold. Autoranks start with more, as can be found in the Currency System.

As can also be seen in that thread, most equipment and techniques cost gold to attain. But, for now, you may take a small number of Kunai, Shuriken, and/or Senbon as a starter gift. If you have too many, we'll let you know in approval. Any other items you'll have to either subtract gold for, or wait until you get in the game to buy.

Unlike the other sections, you don't need links for most of these things. You just need to keep track of your gold. We'll be able to tell from your missions whether you're cheating, and there's also a bank thread in your village which you're required to post in when you acquire or spend money or items.

Customs is any custom technology or weapons your character has. These items should still be listed in the other lists, but their descriptions are placed here for the convenience of all. If it gets too large, as always, you can use spoilers to hide it.

Last section, housing. This is only for if you own a house/thread, and should be a direct link to that thread. You can also use it to link to your apartment description if you go through the trouble of making one, but unlike houses, you cannot buy new furniture for an apartment.

Years later, Sasuke is now one of the top scorers of the ninja apprenticeship school and the top Genin of the Hidden Leaf Village. He is also one of the two surviving members of the Uchiha clan, the once powerful ninja clan of the village that was destroyed by his older brother, Itachi. When Sasuke demanded a reason, Itachi told him he simply wanted to test his strength.
