NAME Wilhelm "Ghastly" Grimm
AGE 24
OCCUPATION sailor, pirate, smuggler, thief, bully boy
FAMILY Ghastly is the second-eldest of a large brood of children belonging to an extensive crime family, whose largest operations are in smuggling. It's said that a branch of their family owns land on the coast.

POSITIVES Dependable, protective, loyal
NEUTRALS Quick-witted, capable
NEGATIVE Secretive, reckless, short-tempered

APPEARANCE Older than the Friedrichs by almost seven years, Ghastly nonetheless resembles them enough for casual passerby to recognize the similarity without sharing their eerie sameness. Though his hair was once the same uninspiring brown, years of being in the sun have very much lightened the color, and time spent on the ocean has coarsened his skin and roughed his hands and voice. He is built to a heavier frame than his younger siblings, broader of shoulder but still surprisingly quick despite his muscular bulk. His eyes are much lighter in color, and when he speaks his voice is deep and gravelly enough that listeners often assume that he is much older than he appears. Unlike the Freds, Ghastly does not much care for dressing well, and thus generally does not. His normal attire is garb that marks him as a man off the sea -- light-weight shirts and sturdy breeches, with a sash that doesn't match the shirt and a coat that doesn't match anything.

PERSONALITY Deep down, Ghastly is a simple man, although his dual motives often cause surprisingly complicated conflict in his life. He is motivated by two things: fun and family. On the one hand he is very much a sailor at heart, enjoying being at sea as well as the traditional pastimes given over to those infamous maritime servants: boozing, wenching, and dicing. On the other hand, he is utterly devoted to his family, with a sense of duty that often (but not always) outweighs all other concerns and desires. Ghastly is rarely kind and jovial only when he is having his fun at someone else's expense, quick to cuff cabin boys for not stepping lively, quicker still to start fights or beat and berate the men placed under his command.

But he will do anything for his family, has never failed to send home a birthday present to his littlest sister, and has been known to "stop by" to check up on the other members of his family from time to time.

SKILLS Ghastly is a seasoned smuggler and pirate, often a captain of the well-equipped little sloops that do such damage to maritime trade. He can read and write passably but figure very well indeed, as he must to cheat the littlest farthing from those he deals with. He is quick-thinking and adaptive, and an expert tavern brawler, though his tendency to hurt his opponents after he's put them down has lead to trouble with the law once or twice.

HISTORY Wilhelm is the second-eldest child in the Grimm family, and as such is largely in charge of the water-based smuggling as well as being the second-in-command of the family operations under his brother Jacob. When Wilhelm was seven or eight he ran away from home to become a pirate, and thereafter spent a large portion of his young life at sea, coming home in between voyages. While other families might have tried to keep their sons from such a hard life, the Grimm family encouraged it, leveraging Wilhelm's interest to push him into smuggling and piracy. It is from his family at large that he learned both his loyalty (family always comes first with the Grimms) and his calculating manner.

Until now, Wilhelm has kept mostly to coastal cities and the sea itself save for rare visits to various siblings throughout the years. There may once have been a visit inland, the purpose of which he never saw fit to share with his siblings --

-- but no one speaks of that, not even now that he can no longer hide Dapplegrimm from his siblings. With Unwelcome and Ariana already having established the trend, there had been little shock when she had been discovered.

Dapplegrimm

User Image

Doe she may be, Dapplegrimm very rarely lives up to the stereotypes of her gender, appearing forceful, physical, and enthusiastically loud for all that she cannot speak. She has an absolute knack for forcing her way into situations that she has no business being a part of just to see what she can get out of it. This will become more dangerous as she grows older and larger since she has never seemed to understand gentleness or subtlety. She is also prone to asserting her superiority over other creatures, be they Guardians, unlucky horses, barking dogs, or guardsmen. Anything that dares to look her straight in the eye and maintain the gaze without dropping their eyes is suspect, and will generally result in snorting, stamping, and if it escalates, shoving. This absolutely includes her Chosen, whom she seems to treat as an unruly fawn that she alone can discipline and protect. It is just as common for her to chase would-be lovers away as it is to find Ghastly limping from a well-placed stomp from one of her hooves.

The Choosing

He lays on his back, amused that each intake of breath should cause the woman lying sprawled across him to gently rise and fall. But like so much -- the world has been set at one remove in the glow of this evening -- the emotion is as distant as dreaming. All that's real is the contentment that leaves him drowsy and the softness of her buttery hair as he pulls his fingers through it. She lays with her arms folded on his chest, and if it bothers her that he doesn't know her name and has never asked, it does not affect the smug curve of her smile. After all, she never asked for his name, either .. What they'd needed of each other did not require names.

"You din't answer me, sailor." Her voice is a low purr that would stir him if he'd any energy left; as it is he bites back a groan for the limitations that the gods built into man.

"Tell me th' question again?" His voice is hoarse, rough from years of salty air and cigar smoke, but the rasp makes her smile widen.

"Your necklace," she repeats, reaching out to lift the totem from where it has fallen to rest in the hollow of his throat. "However did you come across it?"

The warm satisfaction that has kept him docile begins to cool with these words and he turns over abruptly, spilling her gracelessly onto the bed in a tangle of limbs. "Ain't nothin'," he mutters, clutching his fist around it as he swings his legs over the side of the bed. His search for his boots is interrupted only when she stretches out beside him, a knowing look in her eyes.

"It's one've them deers," she insists with velvety satisfaction in her voice. "Them deers they tell stories about -- from the Wood." Why she thinks there is a certain cachet to this he is not sure, but he pulls his gaze away from her, flushed and irrationally angry at her now.

"Don't it occur to you," he finds himself snarling, though his voice is hardly louder than a whisper, "that sometimes a man comes to you to forget?" She draws back from the fire in his voice, from something that almost sounds like hate, and he goes back to looking for his boots under the edge of the bed. He hardly hears the meek apologies she makes as he gets dressed, remembering at the last moment to throw a few coins on the bed as he walks out the door.

Outside the wind of the sea is biting and cold, and he takes deep, calming lungfuls of it. But even the sea -- as much a parent as the woman who bore him -- cannot soothe away the prickle of unease in his gut. Even the sight of the docks, with the forest of masts he has so long called home, cannot supplant his memories of another forest far off from this one. A forest where there'd been a great tree, and branches burdened by tiny carved shapes with no two exactly alike.

Ghastly's Threads
PostPosted: Sun Apr 28, 2013 2:07 pm

Possibilities

Often Found
Despite their best efforts, Ghastly often spends evenings drinking at Two Beers, the tavern owned by the Freds. Outside of taverns and bars he feels most comfortable in the warehouse district, and is more likely to take Dapple walking through those shady, shadowed streets then to take her for a turn in the green spaces outside the city. He often gets into brawls with strangers, and has been known to get thrown in goal long enough for his temper to cool.

Opportunities
Ghastly is, in general, not a very nice man. He is likely to bully, swindle, or fight with others, based on their own personalities, though he is less likely to be outright cruel to a woman than a man. He can be caught up to no good by those clever or unlucky enough to come across him at such a time. Engaging him in a bet is probably the safest way to catch his attention, although buying him a drink also works tolerably well. To those familiar with his siblings -- Georgie or the Freds -- he is easily recognizable, although his propensity to scowl at all and sundry can be somewhat shocking.
