Every long, lean row of metal that jutted up from the ground to make up Amityville Academy's school gates was crooked, bent out of shape and warped into clawed shapes, looming dangerously inwards. Their pointed tips had the discoloration of use, with something dark and crusted always flaking off from the surface. The gate was rusty, but it was hard to see rust on a blackened surface, so dull it refused to reflect a single flicker of light. The gates that surrounded the school were dark, dreary, desolate borders that were a telling signature of the doom and gloom found within.
But nothing about this was actually out of place. The gates had looked like this since the day they'd first been put up, all those years ago. The only difference between then, and now, was the fact that the gate itself was open, the doorway swinging back and forth in the breeze. The sound of the rusty gate was a high pitched squeal with every swing.
They didn't seem to care whether the gate was open or not.
Hanging off of the bars, and climbing up the sides of the gate, were shadowy masses of black with limbs that clutched and scraped their way into the school, and bright little yellow eyes with no life in them. They swarmed the gates until they became nothing but a looming wall of black, punctuated by their many bright little eyes.
And they waited. For you, presumably.
You have two options:
Do nothing:
You sit around and literally, cower. You hide, you try to not get too close to the shadowlings. You are absolutely no help and simply watch others, or perhaps surrender to your fate once the shadowlings get tired of their surroundings and find you.
Fight:
Right, why are you cowering anyway? It is time to step up and attack! You get yourself ready, and brace yourself for shadowlings, a lot of shadowlings.

The area is infested with hundreds of tiny shadowlings, teeming in a thick, unsteady black. They do not seem ravenous quite yet, but they are getting restless, some straying a little too close towards you....

"No, no, bad, very bad, very no, pleassssssse-"
As if she hadn't already proved it was a mistake to try and put her in charge of anything, Selene was wearing a circle in a small, secluded spot near the gates, pacing quickly as she tried to think about just what she was supposed to do.
"Protect the gatessss, they sssssaid. Watch the ssssstudentssssss, they sssaaaid. Well who, exactly, is supposed to watch me!"
Selene stamped her tiny little foot, and then screeched when she caught the attention of some of the shadowlings. They were draped all over the gates, hanging curiously, as if waiting for some sort of silent order. Several very curious little yellow eyes turned her way, and their gaze was hungry. It was as if they could see her tiny, fluttering heart beating wildly through her chest, and her hands settled over it instinctively.
She was outnumbered, outmanned, and most definitely out of her element. Her tail swished nervously behind her, and she tried to make some sort of threatening pose.. but it simply looked pathetic.

Leaving her dorm room to be consumed by the creatures wasn't exactly a tough decision. Heading to the gates, however, was a strange choice. It was more instinctive than anything else; she'd fled her dorm, and she often walked around campus in her spare time, and her next move was basically to check on the school's perimeter. Logically, it was probably to determine if the creatures ahd come from within, or without of school grounds.
Within, sadly, would have been a much better outcome; without meant, to Amarus, that they were being invaded. And, one way or another, when she got to the gates the disturbing creaking sound and the multitude of tiny shadow creatures got under her ghostly skin. Apart from noticing that, she also spotted the professor who'd led the only class she could remember attending with supervision, ever.
"Professor Selene? Are you alright...? Do you know what's going on?" Amarus asked.
Shadowlings occasionally wandered far too close to her for comfort, and Amarus folded her hands into the kuji-kiri for Rin, occasionally striking out at them in a sweeping kick. She wasn't yet seeking them out to kill them, no, she was mostly just lashing out at any that ventured close enough to Selene and herself, the ones that strayed from the swarm.
Her kick connected with three of them, vanquishing all three. "They're not hard to kill, but," Amarus began, wincing slightly, "it kind of stings." She was mostly mumbling this observation to herself, not so much with any intention of Selene actually answering her. The professor didn't exactly seem keen on fighting, after all, but.. maybe she had some answers?
Seriously, she'd love to know what was going on. "I hope we're not alone, here..." she added, as she kicked at another shadowling, and another.

Selene screeched again, when someone called her name, but as soon as she saw who it was, she scuttled as close to the ghoul as possible. "Ah, yes! Well, no! I'm not sure exactly what... but.. just..! Please help! Just.. just.. all of them need to go, please! I will help you or anyone who comes about, but I just.. aaahhh..." One of them was clutching at her skirt and pulling, and Selene looked like she was about to faint.
"Don't mind me, just clean up this mess and I will keep an eye on you! Oh dear, there are so many.."

"Take care of them? My pleasure," she replied.
Amarus afforded the seemingly timid Professor one of her more wicked smiles, her purple-pink aura extending into her Lotus Eater flames around her hands as she concentrated another attack at the shadowling tugging at Selene's skirt. She actually attempted more of a shooing motion first, though, so as to not damage the Professor's clothing.
She could be considerate. Sometimes.
On the positive side, she hadn't harmed Selene, and the shadowling was perhaps more interested in Amarus herself now. On the negative side, being careful did a lot less damage.

This time, she would have to make up for the ones she hadn't even grazed last time. Instead, that completely didn't happen at all, and she just sort of made shooing motions at more and more of them, trying to herd them away from Selene so that she could put the hurt on them without worrying about the professor.
"They are kind of like pets," she said, completely erroneously comparing them to normal things. "I wonder if we could domesticate them?"
In the middle of making completely useless shooing motions, attempting to b*tchslap one that got too close to her long, bound hair, she added: "Too much of an appetite, probably."

Being surrounded by a swarm of shadowlings, no assistance from anyone yet, might be enough to make a student weep bitter tears of inevitable defeat-- thankfully, being both a Ghost and a Lotus Eater meant that Amarus was pretty calm.
Especially since she didn't care about the dorm room that'd just been devoured. Perhaps she needed to care more, as she was now doing absolutely nothing to any of them.
She was considering if she could teach them a choreographed dance; they seemed to have a lot more agility and muscle control than the foxfires she'd been 'borrowing,' and would do the arm-motion bits a lot better, she suspected.
Which made her think: what was the word (she was thinking of the word 'choreograph,' obviously, but she herself had no clue what it was) for that? Surely it was something long and complex and unpleasant, but what? In her pursuit for knowledge, she yet again failed to do any substantial damage.

"I like the gate better when it is silent," Amarus admitted, trying to push her way through her herded shadowlings. Apparently her own personal auditory discomfort was enough motivation: While trying to push through the swarms, she kicked one shadowling so that it went flying right into a tiny shadowling that had been climbing the gates, smooshing them both into oblivion.
She smirked at the gate and the herd of shadowlings in self-satisfaction, until she realized she had only dispatched 14 of them, or so. And there were still many, many left.
"Ah, Professor?" she called back to Selene, "I do not feel... very good, and there are, ah, a lot more left."
Amarus tried to wade back to her, but stood there, as if unsure what to do. She felt kind of dizzy, actually. Dizzy, and apprehension was starting to curl up at the edges of her border of calmness; Lotus essence could only go so far, before the situation started to look very dire indeed.

That fight in his room took out more of his energy than Shun would have liked to admit. Running out of the dorms, he began to look around, furrowing his brow as he sought out signs of trouble. As he moved on about, the sounds of a struggle could be heard. Was that from the entrance of the school? Grimacing, he made his way towards the gates, pausing as he stared at a mass of black swarming the area. There were a number of yellow eyes dotting here and there as well. No doubt they were devouring the entrance just as they were trying to do with his room.
"Che."
They weren't the only ones. Professor Selene and Amarus were here as well from the looks of things. Keeping his daggers ready, he darted forth. Immediately, he began to lash out here and there, sinking his daggers into any shadowy form that he could set his eye on.
They were biting back though, and it was a rather painful thing as well. Grimacing, he came to a halt after he had cut his way towards the pink haired girl and the snake.
"Holding the line are we?" he asked flatly.

Selene thought the ghoul was doing a fine job, and she watched her take on the shadowlings virtually solo. Well, no, she was more than just virtually.. Selene was all but useless standing there fretting as she watched the ghoul. Still, when Amarus returned complaining of fatigue, Selene's little arms reached out and pulled her safely away from the fray. "Then rest, my dear! Rest, here with me. You've done so well! I'm very proud of you!"
The students of Amityville were all the scarelings Selene would ever have, or want.
"Ah, there, you see? Just as you tire, another comes to take up the mantle. Lovely timing!"
Well, she could not claim the stranger's arrival was unimpressive; he sliced through the tiny shadowlings without seemingly a second thought, and yet with precision. Or maybe it was because she'd become relatively surrounded, and it wasn't hard to slice through crowds; one way or another, Amarus silently applauded the style.
"As best as I can, while being flanked on all sides by these hungry creatures," she replied. Amarus tried to search her memory for any sign that she'd met this boil before, but she wasn't entirely able to recall him. "Amarus, Lotus Eater, and although I feel like I should know someone with, ah, such a penchant for fighting... I'm not sure that we have met?" she asked, with a hopeless gesture as if to indicate under these circumstances she could hardly be expected to remember anything at all.
"You did arrive just in time, however; I feel that I need to, ah, sit down for a moment, sadly. There's something about these that make me feel drained," she said, bowing to Shun and listening to Selene as she welcomed her over. Yes, resting with the Prof was a good idea, just about then. It wasn't even that she was particularly injured, just... she felt strange. Very strange.

Shun let out a breath, feeling the weariness seeping into himself. Yes, he had spent too much energy back in his room. Without rest, he wasn't sure how long he was going to be able to keep fending off these shadows. He eyed them all warily before shooting a glance to the Lotus Eater.
"Shun Kuroda. I believe I met you through Xiu at Prom," he stated tersely. It wasn't really a time to be catching up or doing a whole lot of idle chatter. Not with these creatures devouring the place.
His gaze then settled on Selene. She... could fight right? The professors typically were capable of doing so and he recalled her at the Insanity filled Haunted House Octobers ago. He didn't entirely remember seeing her taking up arms though. Surely, she could do something to help the two of them. But.. given her skittish nature that he had seen in classes, he wasn't entirely certain of this.
Hm.

The creatures had obviously gotten into more than just her room and the Undead dorms were evident enough as Olivia ran up the many flights of stairs and into the open of the school grounds.
She had no idea where to go, they were everywhere and getting into everything. Everywhere she looked, her blue eyes could spot multitudes of small little things with bright yellow eyes. What were they, and why were they here? Olivia had so many questions and she was unsure her aimless running was going to get here anywhere until she spotted a very familiar color in the distance.
The gates were coming upon her, teamed with the shadow beings like everywhere else. But more importantly, "Amarus!" Olivia called out, going against her usual protocol of hanging silently in the back awaiting to be address. There was something strange going on. And it seemed even for a teacher to be there, "Miss Selene!"
And someone else she had no idea. Olivia gave Shun a mighty big stare as she approached. O.O Though, made more of a beeline towards the lotus eater, who looked very warn out, "are you alright?"
