Travel – if the student services is offering a CheapTrip deal with a weekend bus trip to NYC, he's signed up. New museum opening for post modernist architecture in Boston? He'll be there. Study abroad, day trips, even couch-surfing, Quenton is fascinated by the challenges of travel, the stories gathered, and the inspiration one can come back with. Often enough the journey is as important as the destination.
Sculpting – stone, metal, glass, or wood, the medium doesn’t particularly matter but his personal favorite is marble. Figural representations, particularly people and animals, or combinations thereof are his preferred subject. Quenton adores visiting museums to look at the classical mastery of this type of art. It’s hard to find models and enough prime material, but he does his best. There’s a distinct lack of clientele anymore, too, so this tends to be for personal satisfaction only. It used to be THE form of public art, now usurped by simpler, less expensive in time and money media. He is bitter at this. He is pursuing a 3D arts degree, with a specialization in sculpture at University, so he spends a lot of his time at the labs.
Lapidary – jewelry making, gem-cutting, bead making, glass blowing, and to some degree metalsmithing all hold Quenton’s interest. He loves the intricacy, the long hours, and especially the look of his finished products on the necks and limbs of lovely clients. He’s been making pieces for years, has an Etsy account, his own personal website, and a few independent jewelers that buy his wares (thanks to connections Stroud had). While he adores the money and thrill of a sale, he is so much into the art of it that he’s been known to make gifts of expensive pieces to people he felt needed to own them. Each piece has a personality of its own, and some people were meant to own them and them to grace that person. There’s really nothing more unfortunate than a piece of jewelry that is at odds with its wearer.
Virtues:
Polymath – Quenton loves learning for it’s own sake. It doesn’t really matter the field or subject on a basic level. He has a voracious mind, and is well practiced at how he studies and retains best to maximize the time that he can allot every week to becoming a renaissance man…his own self-styled Da Vinci. He speaks two languages right now – English and German, he keeps a poetry journal on him at all times, he plays the Shawm passably and the medieval recorder for a minor in performance arts. This all has left him little time for sleep, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world. The jack of all trades is generally a master of none, but he tells himself he doesn't have to be the best at everything - he just has to be his personal best.
Consequently, if he sees something or someone doing something interesting, he’s very likely to want a closer look. He’s always looking to learn more. Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.
Confident – He knows what he’s worth to society, having as much learning and love of learning as he does, and he’s not about to worry about it. He’s watched plenty of classmates fail because of their aimlessness, their lack of self-confidence, or a dearth of general motivation. They’re paralyzed by their Sturm und Drang, while he’s out doing and seeing. He has no time to waste on moping or concerning himself with what others are judging about him.
If he finds someone being judgmental of himself or others, and he sees it as unjust, Quenton immediately assess the situation. Are they being a bigot, or do they seem to have reason and discourse? If its the latter, he's always eager for a lively debate. But sadly bigotry cannot be learned from or reasoned with, so best to declare them so and move on.
Integrity – In olden fairytale days, Quenton would have been a shoo-in for a knight. He always keeps his word, does things by the book, follows law and stands for order. He won’t willingly stab someone in the back, regardless of wrongs done him or advantage it would bring him. Those who will defend authority against rebellion must not themselves rebel, those who would see prosperity and order must uphold it in the face of adversity.
Flaws:
Rigid Justice - Letter of the law, not the spirit - empathy shows no play of mercy in his decisions. Even if a situation tears him up inside, Quenton will stand by the law. As a part of his adherence to integrity some would find him incorrigible. It isn’t that he does not empathize with those who are forced by circumstance to break law, he simply cannot condone or overlook the breaking. Whatever the reason, the law is the law. Similarly, he will not seek to avoid punishments himself. If he were a medieval lord and caught a child poaching because they were starving, he would still have their hand cut off for the offense. To the majority of people, this quality can be make things he does in the name of law monstrous, frightening, and cold. Like Stannis Baratheon, lawful stupid.
Absent-minded – Because he has so many interests and pursuits, and gets so little sleep, Quenton is permanently strung out. He forgets to write things down, then gets things mixed up, and the result is missed meetings, wrong names, wrong products or misheard and misinterpreted ones. Sometimes things are wholesale forgotten. Even confronted with how sleep and slowing down could improve his interaction with fewer stimuli, Quenton flat out refuses to slow down. This has cost him clients, occasional grades (don't sleep through your midterm) and a few friends who thought missing their birthday was right out. When he does miss things he has deep abiding guilt about it and will do all he can to set things right, but when you break some eggs you can’t exactly just put it together again.
Strict (Tiger ‘Mom’) – A relative to his adherence to the law, is his extreme adherence to contracts, assignments, and what people ‘should be doing’. He will not put anything aside that he perceives as his duty, nor does he make allowances for others in doing what he perceives are their duties. Once plans are made, he is loath to break them or adjust them for any reason, no matter the threat or wisdom of it. For those having to deal with Quenton, it is human nature to reject limits that aren't empathic- and he doesn’t let empathy adjust any reason anyone has to offer for not performing. Consequently, it’s hard for him to keep friends he makes once they discover just how obsessively strict his sensibilities are, or how controlling he can be. Any reasons given are excuses. There is no valid excuse, not for him, not for you. Illness, death, too much stress, hospitalization- shirking is shirking and Quenton will not hesitate to try to seize control of the situation, declare what is unacceptable and force the issue to getting back on track. Pointing out the fact that he misses things because of his absentmindedness won’t help either. Maybe they should spend more time getting their business done than trying to weasel out of it deflecting blame of instances that aren’t related.
