  B A S I C S
Name: Gemma Fossen Nicknames: Gem, Gemmy Age: Sixteen Birthday: May 4th Astrological Sign: Taurus Nationality: Predominantly German, with bits of Dutch and Welsh School: Teufel Town High School
Text Color: #0000FF, BlueP E R S O N A L I T Y & H O B B I E S
Gemma is the type of person whose emotions are closely guarded. While not necessarily shy, she has trouble interpreting what she may be feeling into words - she tends to speak through her actions more often than not, and lapses into thoughtful or uncomfortable silences. As a result, much of what she does say can range between very general or very bizarre (depending on how much she is pushed to answer something). Truthfully it is a very frustrating thing for her, and even she does not fully understand her own emotions. From a young age, she has always pictured herself much like a sea wall, pushing back against emotions that push and pull like ocean tides. Combined with her tomboyish nature and tall personage, Gemma is often viewed by others as somewhat intimidating. If anything, it pushes people away as much as it has others looking in pseudo-awe. Girls come to her when someone is harassing them and she'll play along, shoot a glare this way and that, but at the end of the day it does not win her anything. Once the situation is handled, the girls leave her to her own devices. Gemma feels they're either too intimidated or find her too awkward to deal with, as she's not very outwardly girly; if anything, her girly sides are kept close to her heart.
Gemma is gifted with physical strength and an aptitude for sports. This makes her quite popular with guys, although not in the way that most would think (especially girls who espy her easy nature with the opposite gender and feel the slightest bit jealous). If anything, she is more comfortable around them - she finds it easier to joke around with them or play sports, as it feels more like an activity where she can suspend her emotions for a short time. It is not really a true friendship though, as most of the time they are only playground friends, so to speak - no secrets interchanged or confidences kept, but merely as someone to pal around with when there is nothing else to do. She does not trust very many easily, even if she could adequately put her feelings into words.
She is a very focused individual. Once she commits herself to a plan of action, she sticks with it even if the forecast is disaster. If someone could benefit from her actions, even at the cost of some personal discomfort, then that makes the whole enterprise worth it for her. However, she is also fiercely independent and wants to prove that, no matter how lonely she is and wishes she had someone to depend upon, she can and will take care of herself. A part of her wants to uphold that strong persona she is known as at Teufel Town High, in order to make others feel safe. It is only her great misfortune that so far it only seems to drive other people away. If given the chance though, Gemma is very steadfast. She is loyal to her family to a fault, and will go out of her way to help them (in her own awkward way), even if she will not open up about what she is feeling.. or moreso that she is unable to. Needless to say it has her parents worried.
Gemma's favorite pasttime is sports. She has been playing them since entering grade school, with her favorite sports being soccer and baseball (she plays on the school teams, as a second baseman and forward, respectively), and is an avid follower of professional games on television. She has yet to go to a professional game but really wants to - her father has been promising to take the family for ages but they never seem to get around to it. In keeping with her very private nature, Gemma also enjoys taking walks, particularly down on the pier and along the shore. The ocean is her favorite place, having grown up around it, and finds the most peace there whenever her mind feels troubled. Despite her tomboyish attitude and her problems sorting out her own emotions, she finds release in painting. While her art is not the most refined, her art is something incredibly personal for her and none outside of her family have seen her paintings (or even know about her interest in it). Perhaps more personal than her painting is her guilty pleasure of romantic films or movies. Gemma is very critical about what she considers a good love story, but she does rather like the small tug she feels whenever she tracks down a well-crafted one.. not that she will ever admit to it. Perhaps it is a latent desire to feel something similar someday, or just happiness for the fictional couple - even she isn't very sure.O D D S & E N D S
Likes: Sports, tea, painting, walks, fresh-cut grass, the ocean, good stories, white chocolate Dislikes: Sitting still for too long, indecision, paper cuts, rubbing alcohol, the smell of cigarette smoke
Favorite Movies: The Holiday, Sabrina, Princess Bride, My Fair Lady, A Streetcar Named Desire, Love Actually, Chocolat ( her secret favorite romantic movies ), Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, District 9, The Mummy, Hidalgo, Legend of Zorro, Serenity, X-Men ( her favorite movies in general ) Favorite Sports Teams: San Francisco Giants ( baseball ), Seattle Sounders ( soccer ), Pittsburgh Steelers ( football ), Chicago Bulls ( basketball ) Favorite Stories: The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Three Daughters of King O'Hara, The Silent Princess, The Snow Queen, The Bold Knight, the Apples of Youth, and the Water of Life, The Snow Maiden, Beauty and the Beast, The Green Knight. Favorite Bands: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Styx, Kansas, Eric Clapton, Heart - she's a fan of classic rock and generally isn't picky on what kind she listens to. Her secret music love, though, is doo-wop, or any music from the 1950s and 60s; she listens to it when she paints. In particular, she's fond of the Platters and Ben E. King and the Drifters.A P P E A R A N C E
Gemma has light blue hair that falls in messy waves to the middle of her back, with bangs that brush thick eyebrows and bright blue eyes. Oftentimes she keeps it pushed back with a headband and sometimes wears it up in a ponytail. Her skin is healthy and often a little banged up from her perpetual physical activity (a bandaid often visible on her knees or elbows, or around a finger). In terms of style, she dresses functionally and comfortably, opting towards jeans, sneakers, and tanktops, with the occasional hoodie. She likes clothing she can move around in easily.

  H I S T O R Y
Gemma's father Dom, fresh out of a tenure in the Army thanks to family pressures, started college at a later date than he had intended. However it was probably for the best, as he soon made the acquaintance of a pretty young girl from Germany named Elke, who was four years his junior. The two hit it off immediately after meeting through a Philosophy class, despite the fact that they were both different as night and day in some ways: Elke was graceful, sensitive, and dreamy, while Dom was pragmatic, hands-on, and cheerful. It did not take long for both to settle comfortably into their position as friends, becoming one another's yin and yang, and then a short year later, the two were dating. After three more years and college graduation, Dom proposed to Elke, who happily agreed. Given some time, the red tape involving obtaining her green card was cleared, and both had a small, intimate wedding.
Shortly thereafter, Dom's degree in business took him and his wife to Teufel Town, where he began working with the Teufel Bay Fishing Company. He did odd jobs with the company at first while he trained, and many of the employees in the small business tried their hand at different positions, but Dom soon settled into a tradesman position. He was often away north for a weekend discussing business ties, but during the slower portions of the year he helped out on the boats - an active man cannot be kept tied in an office for too long, after all. Elke, for her part, went back to her rich-girl ties and sought work in a local dance studio, teaching ballroom and social dancing. Soon enough, the couple wanted to start a family, and Gemma followed shortly thereafter.
Elke's hopes of having a little girl to put through ballet and to teach dance to were scrambled as the girl grew. Gemma was an active child, who enjoys cavorting with the neighborhood boys rather than playing with dolls, but her tall, awkward presence made for an imposing figure in ballet classes. It became increasingly clear to Elke that her daughter was unhappy in a class among the smaller, more graceful girls. It was with great reluctance on her mother's part and some insistence on her father's part that got Gemma out of dance class and into mixed softball at her elementary school. Here the girl found some measure of comfort in the sport, no longer under the scrutiny of a critical dance instructor and a number of girls who giggled behind their hands at the tall, awkward half-German girl. Her mother did what she could to ease the girl's anxiety and began reading to her every night, a pasttime that continued on with her next three children, and one that Gemma still looks forward to come nightfall.
However, Gemma's troubles did not end with a shift of hobbies. As she moved through the lower grades at Teufel Town Elementary School, her naturally quiet, withdrawn nature combined in a dangerous way with her tall, awkward build. She was friendly enough when approached, if not a little strange whenever asked to speak or for her opinion, as though she could not properly collect her thoughts into a coherent answer. She was the point of ridicule, but it was often kept to slumber parties and concealed in whispers, but that does not mean that the girl did not know she was being talked about. However, try as she might, she could not click with any of the girls her age. None really attempted to approach her, either, based on childish rumors of her strange attitude and intimidating personality. Sometimes girls would come to her if they were being given trouble from a boy, and Gemma, thinking she might have an opportunity to make friends at last, would agree and scare off the offender. But it did little good, as the girls would go on their way and leave her to her own devices. It made her feel useful, at the very least, and if she could bring some measure of comfort to someone else, then that was what mattered in the end.
Gemma drew more into herself as the years progressed, and her voice saw less use. She continued to have minor success with her school's mixed soccer and baseball teams, and her teammates liked her well enough, but being mostly guys, they did not pursue her attentions any further for fear of any rumors starting. When she reached junior high age, she had some minor jealousies towards her sister Liesel, for how well-liked the little girl was and her talent in dance. Her father and younger brother were able to abate the negative feelings on that end, until all Gemma felt was a sort of numbness to the whole idea of being more girly or a dancer. Needless to say, she spent much of her early adolescence very lonely.
During an eighth grade trip to San Francisco and a visit to the Museum of Modern Art, Gemma's eyes were opened to a new means of expression. She immediately dove into using watercolors and oils, and while not very good, it provided her a bit of release whenever she began to feel frantic. Her paintings did not hold much form, and her parents or siblings did not quite understand, but the works were important to her and she is insanely protective of her hobby.
Now in high school, Gemma continues her education in the same lonely state that she habitated in during junior high. Any attempts to make friends with students she did not spend her academic career with were marred by her own awkwardness. The closest thing to friends she has are a few of the guys from the school soccer and baseball teams, but they are not particularly close - merely people to pass the time with during school hours and nothing more, with no deep interest in her problems or inner workings. She is starkly aware that there really is nobody to go to when she feels overwhelmed. Her painting and sports are starting to lose their appeal, and she finds herself taking more walks by the pier in order to clear her mind and let go for a while. What keeps her going is the subtle dependence that her brother Toby and sister Liesel have for her - if she can protect them and make them feel safe, then she could feel a small measure of pride.
But who could the protector lean on when she needed a place to rest?F A M I L Y
◇ Elke Wagner-Fossen ( mother, age forty-four, part-time ballroom and social dance instructor at Pacific Beach Dance ) Elke is a good-natured woman, if not a bit overbearing at times. She is sensitive and easily tunes in to the mood of others around her. Her natural grace makes her more than a bit puzzled at Gemma's lack of dancing grace but abundant athleticism. A bit of a dreamer, she's the heart of the family.
◇ Dominic "Dom" Fossen ( father, age forty-eight, a tradesman with the Teufel Bay Fishing Company ) Dom is by all means the man of the house, practical and honest to a fault. He is actually the closer parent to Gemma, enjoying having a daughter who is like "one of the guys" to play baseball with. He always tends to get stuck in the middle of everyone else's affairs - most often by choice.
◇ Tobias "Toby" Fossen ( younger brother, age eleven, fifth grade student at Teufel Town Elementary School ) Toby is Gemma's younger brother. Independent and serious, moody in the way that most young boys before the onset of puberty tend to be. He hates to be mothered by his mother or his sisters, and prefers the more boyish side of Gemma.
◇ Liesel Fossen ( younger sister, age ten, fourth grade student at Teufel Town Elementary School ) Liesel is Gemma's younger sister. She adopted much of her mother's personality, spending most of her time dancing and daydreaming. She has taken to ballet very easily, and admires her sister - but likes to show off for her, as well.
◇ Rory Fossen ( younger sister, age two ) Rory is Gemma's youngest sister. Very much a crybaby, she hates being left alone or made a fuss over, as she is terribly shy. She is often seen clinging to her mother or father's legs.

The Fossen family lives in a refurbished Victorian-style home in the Anna District, blessedly close to the docks where Dom works and where Gemma likes to walk. The area can get pretty noisy, taking into account the sea gulls, the sea lions, and the noise from the pier and the fishing company, but overall the family likes it fine. Many other families on the block also have relatives in the fishing company.
The home itself has four bedrooms: Gemma's parents occupy one, Toby the second, Liesel the third, and Rory the fourth. Gemma herself lives in the attic. This is a fairly recent development, as Rory was born just before she entered high school, and she and Liesel were forced to share a bedroom while Liesel's old room was converted into a nursery. The situation became a little too crowded though, and so the attic was repainted and cleaned so Gemma could have her own room again. She already spent her personal time up there (she did her painting) and was quite acclimated to it already, so the transition went fairly smoothly.
Her room has a sloped roof, with soft yellow walls. The bay windows are large and face the ocean. The hardwood floors have been polished with her move into the room, but she oftentimes has an old sheet over them for when she paints. The walls are sparsely covered - only a sports or band poster here and there. Her bookshelf and night-stand are likewise modest and practical. The messiest part of the room is where she keeps her supplies and canvases, which are organized in different cans and throwaway jars. The storage closet was converted into a small walk-in, and she stores her finished paintings in there - away from prying eyes. Her (clean) clothes are organized in the closet nicely, while her sports equipment and dirty clothes are piled messily around (and sometimes in) the laundry basket in the corner of the room.W A R D R O B E

  Language: German
Desires: True friendship; someone she can trust regardless of the situation; a safe haven where she feels most comfortable.
Emblem: Lattice ( ^ )
Weapon: Lance
Type of Magic: Gemma's magic would be at odds with her natural physical prowess and gravitate more towards defense, if anything because of the nature of her wish. She can summon her lances to act as a fortress or barrier to either protect someone or close in around an enemy. However she would rather charge down her enemy at full-speed, and it will take some getting used to to learn to combine her natural athleticism and her magical abilities.
