Night at the Museum

A roleplay featuring Flora Gandy and Gemma Fossen

While on patrol at the UMA one night, Flora runs into another magical girl in the area- and they look like they're dressed for the same fancy dress party.

The UMA loomed quietly in the foggy autumn night, and, nervous of being seen, or worse, grounded, a small and athletic figure stalked her way through to the rear door. Looking left to right, she pulled out a card, and swiped it through, causing a small but audible 'beep'. She slipped into the museum, and was met by a chorus of murmurs, which caused her to stiffen slightly and pause in the dusky shadows.

"Flora?"

"I-I'm here!"

"You're hideously late!"

"I'm sorry," muttered the figure, which drew into one of the dim lights now to reveal a slender slip of a blonde girl. "I had to get my father's entry card, and--"

"Well, there's something on the roof," hissed the second voice, which turned out to be a marble sculpture of another slender girl, older and draped in a thin cloth, holding a basket of flowers. "We heard so from the Egyptian wing." Her stone mouth couldn't move from its frozen half-smile, but she sounded mightily peeved. "We've been out of our wits."

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Flora repeated, bobbing her head up and down. She did a sort of half-turn and a bright clover-green light flashed. When it subsided, she was still there, but bedecked in a green outfit with a long doloire in her hands. "I, uh, I'll go look at it."

"Flora!" hissed the statue urgently.

"Y-yes?" asked Flora, turning anxiously.

"Be safe!"

Flora looked taken aback, and then smiled, bobbing happily, "Thank you, Spring!"

"Be safe, be safe, be safe, Flora!" echoed the three other statues around Spring, and the four seasons kept whispering the words as she went, triggering murmurings down the whole of the sculpture gallery.

Gemma really had no idea what she was doing.

The teen had been startled from homework when her Soul Gem had started (for lack of a better term) blinking. Her eyes squinted at the thing on her table, as she remembered hurriedly what that strange white creature had told her in brief after she had made the contract. It blinks when there's Witches. I fight those. Otherwise people will get hurt if Witches run loose. That was the gist of it, right? It was the same mantra she repeated to herself during the last couple of times her gem reacted as such, although she had yet to track down a Witch (a fact which simultaneously relieved her and made her feel immensely guilty).

The glowing was faint when she first noticed it and crept quietly down the stairs (ever since the Night She Almost Did the Thing, as she called it, her parents had been on high alert to nighttime patrolling). Luck had been on her side that night and she slipped out the back door and the garden gate without notice, clutching the Soul Gem in her hand. As she ran down the block, the light grew steadily stronger. The moon was round and full that night, and it illuminated the path her Soul Gem was leading her down. The UMA loomed close at hand, and the light had steadied into an unblinking brightness. Gemma took in the building as she slowed her steps.

"Okay," she said to herself. "Okay, okay, okay, okay." Touch the Gem, transform, find the Witch, kill it. She nodded again and backed slowly down the vacant street tucked to the UMA's side. Touch the Gem, transform, find the Witch, kill it. Hidden from the moon's light and any prying eyes, she closed her eyes as blue light flooded the dark street. When it receded, her normally comfortable clothing had been replaced with an outfit that looked much more knightly (and was, surprisingly, still comfortable, although she could contest the addition of heels). Gemma emerged from the side street and glanced towards the roof of the building.

"Okay." She summoned her lance, backtracked onto the street, and held it steady. She had only gone on these hunts about three times before, and implemented the move she was planning during the last attempt (with some success), but it never failed to send her heart fluttering. Gemma charged towards the steps at full clip, planted the head of the lance into the ground, and launched herself upward towards the roof like a pole vaulter.

For a second attempt, the vaulting technique turned out pretty nicely - she didn't scream as she sailed through the air this time.

Flora reached the roof by more conventional means, and at a running clip, as every which way she went, panicked pieces of art hurried her forward. By the time she emerged into the cool night air, she was panting and out of breath, and she stopped for a moment, gulping and trembling. When she had collected herself, she looked around, half-afraid that she would be face to face with a terrible monster. Like the first one, she thought, remembering the awful creature that the museum pieces had needed her to fight soon after she made her wish.

But there was nothing there, which was a relief in some ways, and worse in others. If she couldn't see it, it didn't mean that it couldn't see her.

She heard a noise and startled, clutching tighter onto her doloire. Creeping around the poles and canvas that were being used to set up a rooftop exhibit for the fall, she caught a glimpse of a figure that seemed almost human. Very human, actually. She had never seen a human shaped monster before, and for a moment, she wondered if her friends had made a mistake. She crept to the edge of the roof, where statuesque women emerged from the architecture like mermaids cresting waves, and whispered, "Please ask your sisters who that figure is due east of us."

There was a murmuring that would have been audible to any magical girl in the area, but no civilian. Then, all of a sudden, a dry and dusty stone voice intoned, "It is not human. We saw it jump onto the roof."

That settled it. Flora aimed her doloire and leapt out at the figure.

Gemma landed on the roof neatly, with her knees only bent just slightly - a sight better than her first attempt at vaulting (she still had the band aids on her knees from that incident). However with the forward momentum her knight's visor had slid down over her eyes and she shook her head in confusion for a moment before restoring it to its former position. The clack of her heels on the UMA's roof sounded loud, especially loud, in the especially still night air. Her heart was still pounding from the jump and the anticipation of her first Witch encounter, and she kept her lance level for safety's sake as she moved a few steps into the maze of canvas. What does a Witch even look like? How would she know what to do? Her gaze drifted upward to where her Gem had relocated itself, but there was none of the telltale blinking from before. The transformation must have gotten rid of that useful feature - or made her less viewable to the Witches, either or. The anxiety of an attack she was completely unprepared for (to her thinking) was stifling.

A beat passed and she paused as something light drifted into her hearing. The wind? No - a glance around at the trees in the neighborhood told her as much. It sounded much more like whispering. Gemma turned her head towards one of the lovely statues far to her right, situated against the rooftop's edge. It had come from there, she was certain. Readjusting her grip, she turned and ventured towards it.

And then a flash of gold and green in the moonlight, and a small shape charged out of the fabric to her left. "Agh --!" Gemma parried just in time, raising the lance and bracing the side with her free hand - the sharp noise of metal on metal grated her ears.

Is this a Witch? Gemma squinted in the pale light as she jumped backwards and leveled her lance defensively at the opponent. Were the Witches supposed to be so.. human shaped? With pale blond hair? Kyuubey had never exactly specified. She swallowed, widened her stance again and narrowed her eyes to glean more details.

"What are you doing here.. ?" she called out to it, if by chance it could be reasoned with. "Leave, uh, leave the museum alone." The words had sounded stronger, tougher in her head, but they deflated as she had continued to speak. Gemma fully realized she had no idea about Witches and she felt rather silly trying to talk with it first.

But it never hurt to take into consideration all options, especially when her source of information on the subject had not been exactly.. forthcoming.

Flora recoiled at the force of the parry, and when she landed, rubbed her sore knuckles gingerly. It was a slight pause, but enough to give the other girl's words time to sink in. She felt indignant, then confused. Who was this monster to tell her to leave the museum alone? She was the one defending it! But Flora wasn't a stupid girl, and her eyes had adjusted to the dark, so she was able to put two and two together after a few moments of confusion.

"You're not a monster, are you?" she gasped. "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry!" Stepping more clearly into view, she put down her doloire and held up her hands. "I-I didn't realize, my friends must have seen you coming and a-assumed... They really are quite terrified of the m-monsters!"

She gulped and cast a glance at the side of the building where the statues stood. If they could move, she fancied they might have shrugged, but they were silent, maybe out of embarrassment. Turning her attention back to the figure, she said, "M-my name is Flora, and I d-don't mean you any harm if you don't mean the museum any." Now that the shock had worn off, she had a hundred thousand questions. This girl wasn't a monster, but she had jumped to the roof! Was she magical, too? Had she met the same rabbit monster that Flora had on her birthday? Did she have a gem? She could barely see the other girl in the darkness, silhouetted by all the canvas and poles, but even the prospect of someone else like her was exciting, as terrible as being magical could be. It was better to be miserable in groups, right??

Gemma's own nervousness was seemingly mirrored in the girl before her as she apologized. She was almost tempted to laugh, she was so relieved! But for her own pride and for Flora's sake, she refrained and merely rested her lance tip down and let her tension drip away with each word from her newfound companion's mouth.

"No no, I don't, it's alright. My Gem reacted and I followed it here." She reached up her lance-free hand and patted the front of her visor, where her Soul Gem now resided. "I, uh, didn't expect another uh --" The words 'magical girl' stuck in her throat, the phrase too silly to emerge properly. "-- another person patrolling? Like me, anyway." Her gaze fell to her feet and she tapped one anxiously. Her Gem was no longer reacting, but the air still felt tense. "I don't know where the Witch went though.. I've uh, not fought one yet." She admitted the last bit sheepishly, and her cheeks colored with shame. Each time the Witch had outrun her, escaped her, probably to hurt people. Some Puella Magi she was.

But as the girl had gestured in the light, a faint memory came back to Gemma, of a familiar face, her sweater vest coated in powdered sugar. "Wait." She took a step forward to get a better look.. and sure enough, the face before her lined up with that in her recollections. "I saw you on Teufel Day two years ago." Her eyes widened in recognition, and she could not help but smile at the memory of Flora, so nervously asking for directions to the restroom and receiving a bundle of napkins for her trouble. The impact of the realization and the girl standing before her now dawned on her quickly, and the words that were too strange before came tumbling from her lips. "You're a magical girl too?" Part of Gemma was pleased to find another magical girl, perhaps one more seasoned than she was. But did that mean that Flora had a grief like hers that made her so desperate for help? "Small world." She put a hand to her forehead and leaned back, using the lance for support. The excitement at this discovery though merely brought her back to the issue at hand - the Witch. "Two will be better than one for a Witch. Because like.. I don't know what to expect." She smiled hopefully (and somewhat nervously) at Flora.
