The year is 1999

This is exactly twelve years before the current setting in Deus Ex Machina. Hunters exist in stations all over the world, but their 'home base', per se, is on the Island, the same present-day Island buried close to what is known as the Bermuda Triangle.

Like always, Hunters are recruited into their role for their unique ability to sense and perceive Fear. They are human, they hurt, they bleed, and most of all, they die. Due to the state of using more archaic forms of weapons and Hunter technology, the setting is grim, Hunters normally fight to the death.

You are a Hunter

Your character is a full-fledged Hunter. They have taken countless missions, and in many cases, been irrevocably damaged both physically and mentally. The age range between full fledged Hunters is anywhere on average between 18 -30's, though it is very rare to see older Hunters, they simply do not live that long.

Hunters exist for only one purpose: to protect their world, and to eliminate the threats of Fear that plague their world. They execute their roles by participating in missions, assigned by their faction leads. There are five existing faction leads, each one has a slightly different specialization.

Fear Hunters versus Runic Hunters

Due to the success rate of the weapons conversion device (1% success rate), not all Hunters are bonded to a weapon. In fact not many Hunters have a Fear-based weapon: the ones that do are usually stationed in higher up positions or are given more field mission roles due to their indispensable ability, especially that of creating a Fear Shield, and being able to use Charged Attacks.

Fear Hunters: Fear Hunters are Hunters who have been chosen by their weapons, also known as bonded to a weapon. These weapons are sentient and are able to communicate with the Hunters only, working with the Hunters as a team. Weapons are in most cases, passed down, converted (rarely), and discovered from time to time. Fear Hunters are pretty much what all Hunters in the current timeline are. They still must charge their weapon to use it, have the ability to use a Fear Shield (their weapon absorbs a lot of Fear damage).

Runic Hunters: Runic Hunters are Hunters who are trained in the Runic Weapons arts. They use various styles and combination of Runic weapons (Hunter technology, weapons basically able to attack or damage Fear) on the field. Twelve years ago, a good amount of Hunters fell into this category. It is very possible for a Runic Hunter to acquire a weapon, and in fact, are usually first in queue due to their experience over for example, a trainee Hunter. Runic Hunters do not get the luxury of a Fear Shield because they do not own a Fear-based weapon, and take direct damage, though the slow passive ability of bandages may still apply to healing.

The Current Division Leads

There are five existing division leads during this timeline. Once again, your Hunter can either be a Moon, Sun, Life, Death or Mist Hunter. Below are the division leads and what their roles in general are. Your character may not ICly know all the Hunters, as there are many who were stationed in different areas of the world, but they do recognize all five division leads. Currently there are only two existing division lead assistants.

Death Hunter Lead: Liam
Liam is the type of Hunter who is as invested in Halloween as in the affairs of other Hunters. He's mostly quiet and soft-spoken, people have to gather close to hear him talk: because of that he doesn't mind when others talk for him, even if he disagrees with what they are saying. This behavior comes off as slightly apathetic, though it is sometimes hard to tell if his concern is genuine or simply convenience. He has long learned to disregard his personal values and instead, reflect on the the long-term outcome.

He is the oldest out of the existing five leads, and is often the first and last person to speak even during Council meetings. Even at the age of fourty-six, he has still not considered being anywhere other than on missions or on the front lines. Lately though, there are rumours from many Hunters that he is slipping up a lot more often, the price being costly mistakes and a sharp decrease in his division's numbers.

- His weapon is the energy-scythe, Circe
-The Death Division is in charge of gathering information, planning, and organizing pre-mission investigations.

Life Hunter Lead: Velda
The Delacroix family has lead the Life Division since before there even was a Life Division. Their continual efforts through the ages have helped the Hunters survive as an organization, and Velda's own unique genius for merging modern technology with runic magics has helped usher in a new age for Deus. Because of this background, her skill, and her relatively young age of 22, the current Life leader is as close as any hunter gets to being sheltered. The fact that she has a great deal of trouble remembering to take care of herself, doesn't help matters.

When she's focused, she'll forget about sleeping, eating, warm clothes, and basic hygiene. When she's not focused, her attention span is short and takes her randomly all over the island, and she'll still forget about sleeping, eating, warm clothes, and basic hygiene. Years before, she'd often have a pair of moon hunters on hand to make sure she stayed well and in one piece, but for the last two, she's taken on an assistant to both help her in the labs and also act as a bodyguard/caretaker.

While not at all a harsh leader, she can also be rather thoughtless and inconsiderate of those beneath her. She expects Life hunters to be able to, if not keep up with, at least follow quickly behind her in terms of comprehension and innovation. Disappointment in this often leads to her either ignoring hunter in question until they bring themselves up to a point that is once again worth paying attention to. As far as rewards go, more interesting projects, ribbons, more materials, random flowers, cakes, pretty stones, photos of cathedrals, feathers....any of these ending up on your desk generally means she's happy with you.

Most Life hunters treat her with a combination of indulgence and exasperation in private, but respect in front of other divisions. She is their leader after all, not to mention the one make the majority of advancements.

- her weapon is an extendable staff, Mela
- the Life Division is responsible for researching Weapons transformations, studying FEAR, and developing runic magics and weapons.

Moon Hunter Lead: Jonathan
John is the kind of person who will relax any atmosphere he walks into using nothing but his power of positivity and supportive nature. He is quick to think, less quick to speak, and tends to be a peacemaker between bickering parties with an even head.
- His weapon is a pair of jutte named Ieyasu
- The Moon Division is responsible for defense and healing

Sun Hunter Lead Ferdinand

Excuse me, are you a Sun Hunter? No? Then Ferdinand Bolinsky doesn't care what you think, do, say, feel, or want.

Yes?

Then Ferdinand Bolinsky would like to know just what the hell you're doing instead of training, you weak, worthless scum sucking maggot. Get back to your damn duties before he rips of your head and shoves his foot down your ******** throat.

Ferdinand is an uncompromising man in the way an eight inch thick slab of steel is an uncompromising piece of metal. He is everything that the Death Hunter Liam is not. You can hear Ferdinand talking screaming violently from a mile away as he pulverizes the newest Sun Hunters into the malleable mush he needs to sculpt an ideal offensive fighter. While a harsh and seemingly distant leader, Ferdinand behaves this way out of necessity.

He has seen too many recruits die, too many full-fledged Hunters fall, to get too close to any of them. Only on rare occasion will even his fellow division leaders see the softer side of Ferdinand, who worries somewhat obsessively over the fate of his recruits.

Still, there is no room for weakness in the Sun Hunters, and Ferdinand is just the man to beat it out of you.

-His weapon is the massive battle axe, Albatross.
-The Sun division is responsible for offensive tactics.

Mist Hunter Lead: Nkiruka
When Ruka gets down to business, she means it. Nothing had better stand between her and what she wants, even if what she wants happens to be an idea or goal rather than a tangible object. She is not afraid to create a casualty count if that is what is needed. In her eyes, it's better that someone dies by a bullet quickly than suffer the fate of being eaten alive.
- Her weapon is a kpinga called Uduak. She also carries a runic automatic sub-machine gun.
- The Mist Division specializes in being flexible, jack-of-all-trades special ops.

Hunters vs. Halloween

While it is a Hunter's role to rid their world of the threats from Halloween, the current status at the moment is something a little more grave. Almost two-hundred Hunters have been gathered for this current mission, and though they may have an idea of what lies ahead in terms of severity, especially with news that more and more Halloween creatures have been seen invading the Human World and attacking people, though the real news of the mission has yet to be revealed...

Golems and Hunter Tech

At the moment, golems do not exist quite yet, and neither does a proper weapons conversion device, so everything hurts more. A lot more.
