.:Rider Profile:.

Name: Kanen (K'en)
Age: 18 19
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft/Rank: Weyrbrat
History: Kanen and his twin, Bannen, were born and raised at Benden weyr. Like most weyrbrats they were cared for by foster parents, but unlike most weyrbrats they were not actually the product of a Flight. One of their favorite things to do growing up (and even still currently) was to switch places and see if anyone noticed or could tell them apart.

At the age of twelve he and his brother joined the ranks of Candidates, but thus far every year have proved unsuccessful in Impressing. Now that they have gotten older and their chances are lessening, Kanen has been looking into leather-working as a back-up craft should he age out. In spite of his back-up plan, he remains hopeful that he or his brother (preferably both) may someday become lucky enough to join the dragonriders in their mission to protect Pern.

Update: At 18 turns of age, K'en and his twin met Theirs in Gold Yirath's final clutch.

Description: Kanen is 5’10” tall and is of a fairly average body build, leaning a bit on the slimmer side. He has brown eyes and light brown, straight hair that reaches to about his shoulders.

Personality:
Kanen has always been fairly responsible, and does his best to keep up with both his studies and his chores. Kanen can almost always be counted upon to complete the tasks assigned to him, for he doesn't like to let others down. If for some reason the task cannot be completed, however, he will apologize profusely and accept full responsibility for his failure or negligence.

Kanen is also one of those people who tends to pick up very small emotional cues, and thus is often very aware of how others are feeling. He is a good comfort for someone if they are hurting, and he is generally very careful not to cause any such pain himself. One can always count on him to be understanding and considerate of how they feel. On the downside to this, Kanen isn't always just 'aware' of how another feels. His rather active imagination makes it so that at times he feels other’s grief or stress for himself. He generally tries to avoid overly emotional gatherings for this reason.

Between himself and his brother, Kanen is by far the quieter of the twins. Certainly, he can be engaged in conversation and will offer small opinions here and there, but most times when he and Bannen are talking with others he is more than happy to let his brother take control of the conversation. Even on the rare occasions where he's on his own he is not particularly chatty and tends to just blend himself into the background. Quite the contrast to his far more boisterous and people-friendly look-alike.

Kanen’s brother likes to create a lot of elaborate jokes and plans, and often times Kanen is the one trying to tone things down a bit. If something might have a particularly bad end result (even if not intended that way), Kanen will be the first to advise against it to his brother and explain why. Most of Bannen's schemes are perfectly harmless, but regardless Kanen is there to act as a safe counter-balance. What sort of things might Kanen advise against? Anything involving potential injury (even if minor), anything involving ruined clothing or property, anything involving a ledge... Despite his tendency to temper things down, however, Kanen doesn't always forestall planned mischief. In fact, on occasion he will even be the one to instigate a plan himself. Again, nothing outrageous, but what was the harm in a little innocent fun if no one was troubled and they themselves weren't caught?

Bannen and Kanen have what many might refer to as a 'freaky twin link'. Even for brothers they are unusually close to one another, and often they can tell what the other is thinking even without saying a word. Kanen likes to think of his brother and himself as being two parts of one. Their somewhat opposing personalities complement one another and make for the equivalent of one well-balanced individual. He would never betray or intentionally hurt his twin.

On the flip side of things, Kanen really doesn't do too well when separated from Bannen. He'll do alright on his own for small amounts of time, but anything more than a day will start to get to him. He becomes nervous and anxious, and, despite not saying a word about it, he'll be in a fairly poor mood until the two of them are reunited.

Though he doesn't often show it, Kanen also has a bit of a jealous streak when it comes to his brother. Bannen is a hopeless player, but, while most all of his relationships come to nothing, there are occasions when a particular girl might catch his attention more strongly than the others. During these times Kanen feels outright ignored, and he often becomes quite withdrawn, seething in unexpressed jealousy and becoming shorter of temper until his brother once again happens to remember that he in fact does exist.

.:The Dragon:.

User Image

Come with your Stromath, Kanen. Let us honour my mother, and let us serve the Weyr she leaves behind. They need our wisdom.

Name: Stromath
Colour: Bronze
Inspired by: Stromatolite
Personality:Stromath is what most was call an 'old soul' even as a hatchling this bronze seems wiser then his years and that's not likely to change as he grows older. Steady and reliable this is not a dragon prone to temperamental outbursts - however, that doesn't mean he won't get frustrated with others. He is still a bronze and as such has the inner urging to lead and be listened to. He's just more prone to giving lectures about why they shouldn't do what they are doing rather then issuing snappish remarks. He seems to have a rather good memory for a dragon - or at least it takes him a bit longer to forget things then some of the others a fact which just adds more credence to the old and wise impression he sometimes leaves. When he can't recall something then he'll demand the details from his rider to fill in the gaps and make his point in any given argument.

If there is one thing Stromath simply can't tolerate it's stupidity, nothing quite gets under this dragons hide as actions he considers stupid...and unfortunately for some this bronzes idea of right and wrong are quite rigid. He's simply not a very flexible beast and his rider might have a hard time convincing him that something new is indeed better when something old has been working just fine as far as Stromath can tell. Why fix something that's not broken?

When it comes to work Stromath's steady and reliable temper translates into a steady and reliable worker. His rider will have to keep a careful eye on him, however, as this bronze is not one to complain and will continue working as long as there's a job needing to be done - even to the detriment of his own well being. A stoic creature, he'll endure pain or hardship without showing his feelings or complaining about it until he simply can't go on any more. It will be up to his rider to keep him from pushing himself past limits that are healthy for him.

Why me?

Kanen's work ethic was a large draw for Stromath who desired a rider equally willing to do what it took to get the job done. Overall they will make for a good and reliable pair, however, Kanen will have to keep on eye on his bronze friend as Stromath is prone to sometimes over working himself. Deep down inside himself Stromath knows that - which is probably why he chose a rider who posesses the ability to see when a task simply can't be finished and has the ability to politely and apologetically explain why. Kanen's understanding and consideration of how other people are feeling might temper some of Stromath's more critical lectures while Stromaths no nonsense point of view might help keep Kanens over active imagination and stress in check. Stromath might not enjoy the antics of Kanens brother which could create a bit of tension between the pair from time to time but he can appreciate the brothers loyalty to each other in the long run. Kanen is going to have to learn how to speak up once in a while however as this opinionated bronze is unlikly to always let him take the quiet track but Stromaths steady and reliable presence might be what Kanen needs to get over his self reliance on Bannen and perhaps even some of that jealousy. Never fear Kanen..Stromath will always be with you!

Stromatolites are layered accretionary structures formed in shallow water by the dripping, binding and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of microorganisms especially that of blue-green algae. They include some of the most ancient records of life on earth.

Stromtolites were much more abundant on the planet in Precambrian times and are the major constituent of the fossil record for about the first 3.5 billion years of life on earth with their abundance peaking at about 1.25 billion years ago. They subsequently declined in abundance and diversity. The widely-supported explanation is that stromatolite builders fell victims to grazing creatures implying that sufficiently complex organisms were common over 1 billion years ago.

Modern stromatolites are mostly found in hypersaline lakes and marine lagoons where extreme conditions due to high saline levels exclude animal grazing. One such location is Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve, Shark Bay in Western Australia where excellent specimens are observed today, and another is Lagoa Salgada, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, where modern stromatolites can be observed as bioherm (domal type) and beds. Inland stromatolites can also be found in saline waters in Cuatro Ciénegas, a unique ecosystem in the Mexican desert, and in Lake Alchichica, a maar lake in Mexico's Oriental Basin. Modern stromatolites are only known to prosper in an open marine environment in the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas. Stromatolites can also be found in the hyper-saline inland lakes on San Salvador Island, Bahamas.

.:Relationships:.

Riders

B'nen
My identical twin-- at least in appearances. We've grown up together our whole lives, and as far as humans go I love and trust him more than any other. I couldn't have asked for a better brother.
I have not formed a very high opinion of him thus far. However, given his relationship with Mine he may yet change my mind-- so long as he stays in line.

Dragons

Gneisth
He seems very nice-- pun not intended. Still, he is an excellent match for my brother and I couldn't be happier for the two.
I enjoy his friendly and cheerful nature and much appreciate his willingness to work-- even if it's not necessarily in the most efficient of ways. Perhaps he will be able to guide his rider into more admirable behavior.

Dragonflight Pern
Ancient Strength Egg
This egg is old, which really doesn't make much sense since its well..still an egg. None the less when one lays a hand on this egg's shell they get the impression of age, good ole reliable wisdom and a steady spirit - well as long as your following the proper way things should be done anyways, woe behold the candidate who might touch this egg the wrong way or worse think the wrong things towards it, a flash of irritation might then show itself and the candidate might get the impression that the hatchling inside wants to have a good talking to with them later on. It is a large egg and likely contains a bronze or large brown.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

elfgurl1234
The next egg felt somehow… old. Kanen tilted his head, slightly perplexed as he ran his hand over the Ancient Strength egg’s shell. It wasn’t often that one felt an ‘old soul’ in a newborn dragonet, but in its own way it was oddly refreshing. It was never a bad thing to have more responsible dragon and rider pairs around the Weyr, and he definitely felt that this dragonet wouldn’t tolerate anything less from his rider. Yours will be quite something. I look forward to seeing you on the Sands. … Well, he looked forward to seeing all of them on the Sands, but the sentiment still stood.

Blade Kuroda
Moving back, Kahar went on to the next egg. He placed his hand onto the Ancient Strength egg and paused as there was a fairly big contrast between this one and the one before. In fact, he felt a spurt of irritation as he set his hand down. Somehow, he felt like he was about to be yelled at to get off of the dragon's yard or something to that effect, which didn't make too much sense. How such a young creature came to seem so... old was a bit of a curiosity.

Kuhlii
It was not without Trepidation that Pahlan stroked his hand against the rough warm shell of the Ancient Strength Egg. He took it off a little more quickly than necessary. That had been...quicker. Clearer, somehow, as if the one inside wasn't just projecting, but watching.

Watching him like he was the egg and the dragonet inside was his father, looking down on him in disapproval. Pahlan exhaled through his teeth and glanced around. Everyone seemed occupied enough, maybe he should just try that again— no. No, he didn't have to take that, not from someone who couldn't even walk yet. He knew he was a fairly worthless person, but he couldn't find any joy in being reminded of it. By an egg. An egg that not two weeks ago hadn't even been laid.

Good luck, egg. And good-bye.

AnimeEyeshime
Bannen found the Ancient Strength egg not much to his liking—age and wisdom had its place, yes, but he figured someone like himself was hardly a potential match for one so...serious. In fact, it felt a bit irritated at him, and put him in mind of an irate Candidate-master. Yup, definitely taking that egg off the watching-carefully list...pity, since it looked like it might be sized brown or bronze. Still, somebody amongst the other candidates was probably stodgy enough to prove its mental match...

The Anesthesia
The Ancient Strength was the next to that she came to visit as she openly avoided going near the center of the clutch just yet. Peeking at the egg curiously Persephone allowed herself to just gawk at it for a moment, it was fairly big and she couldn't help but ponder what colour it was. Drawing her fingers to her mouth the pale complexioned brunette suckled on the tips of her grape-strained digits as she reached out with her off hand and pressed her palm timidly against the smooth shell. Instantly vivid green eyes lowered rather sheepishly, the sensation of guilt flooded into her thinly built body; for whatever reason she felt like she was in trouble with the dragonet. 'I'm sorry--- Was all she mentally uttered, even her inner voice sounded pathetic and timid. Dropping her hands to her sides she kept her head low as she walked very slowly, feet turned inward as she padded along the hot sands. He had every right to be irritated with her, yes certainly a he. The maturity that flowed from his shell made her feel childish and self-conscious. Toddling with a slight waddle due to her odd manner of walking pigeon-toed Persephone brought herself towards the middle of the hatching ground completely deflated.

magnadearel
Finally with a deep breath he neared Ancient Strength Egg. It might be last, but it was far from least. The strength and wisdom of the egg filled him. He knew that the dragonette would be a sturdy boulder for its rider. Slightly jealous for some reason, for that future rider, Falawny turned to look over the eggs. He had finished. Moving to the entrance, he stopped and gave Yirath a bow. Now all he had to do was make it past that endless emptiness that everyone knew as sky…..

Vampire-Dragon-Lover
Still smiling she moved on to another egg, The ancient Strength Egg felt odd to her. So old for being so young, but there was no judgment so she smiled and thought

I was going to greet you as a young one, but you don’t feel young. So greetings wise one, may you find yours swiftly, I mustn’t linger.

Meepfur
Finally, she visited the Ancient Strength egg, which was steady and reliable, strangely older-seeming for an egg. Leaving the eggs, she bowed and exited from the Sands with a sigh of relief that it was over.

SilverShieldwolf
He heads towards the Ancient Strength, placing his hands along the large egg. Alain's thoughts at first were on a prank to pull for the next day and very quickly they were changed. He didn't want to offend the one inside, Sorry for the rude thoughts. I know you will find Yours. It was a quick thought, but a very heartfelt one.

magnadearel
Emkin approached Ancient Strength Egg and laid her hand on the lonely egg. She felt the unwavering strength and noted the wisdom with it. It would be a good steady dragon for some rambunctious candidate.

Marushii
From there, he moved onto the Ancient Strength egg as he began to move towards the center. As he placed his hand on it, Rufet held his breath. Oh! Sir! Ma’am! He wasn’t doing anything wrong, was he? He was doing things right, right? He was terribly sorry if he wasn’t and, and, he was babbling again wasn’t he? Rufet removed his hand and took a deep breath, moving away from the egg towards the next.

.:The Hatching:.

Dragonflight Pern
There was a short pause then, but before anyone had time to get too restless the Inner Glow Egg started to crack and wriggle. After a little while a brown head thrust out of the pointed end of the egg and called out happily to all and sundry. With 'hello' sorted out the head vanished again, and the dragonet got on with the business of breaking its shell properly. While the brown was busy doing that, the Ancient Strength Egg broke open with one mighty heave of its occupant's body. Stepping carefully away from the large shards of its egg the bronze who had just hatched stretched out beautifully patterned wings and surveyed the boys from where he stood.

Only moments later the brown from the Inner Glow Egg finally shook free, and with a happy cry he trotted over to his brother. Bumping his head against his bronze brother's shoulder he gave another bugle and danced a couple of paces towards the male candidates with his head tilted in question. In response the strip-winged bronze gave a restrained hum, and with that he set off sedately after his more energetic sibling.

elfgurl1234
It seemed that the striped bronze had been able to find His as well. Certainly a good thing-- he hardly wished to see any of the dragonets preceding their mother in going Between this Hatching. Kanen's eyes turned back toward the eggs as one of them began to crack and wriggle. Ah, a brown? Very nice. Certainly friendly seeming. Before the brown could even finish hatching another bronze broke free of his shell both quickly and smoothly. Wow, he was quite a handsome one, wasn't he. His was certainly going to be lucky. Soon enough both the brown and the bronze were were coming over towards the rank of male Candidates. Whom would these two chose?

AnimeEyeshime
Bannen was excited to see the Inner Glow's brown head make an appearance, chuckling lightly at the manner of 'hello'. He was glad to see the brown hadn't lost his sense of humor from what he'd felt at the Touching, and whomever he chose was likely going to find an instant pick-me-up to combat the current downhearted mood. The candidate found himself slightly less enthused about the Ancient Strength's appearance, even if he was bronze. A very handsome bronze. A bronze that was likely stern and stodgy and almost certainly not for Bannen.

Still, he did seem to tolerate his more cheerful brother's antics (better than the first bronze had, at any rate), so there was that to be said in favor of him. The brown was enjoying his freedom from the shell, it seemed, dancing off towards the line of male candidates with his bronze brother following behind.

Dragonflight Pern
Right then! Time to go! Grinning as well as a dragon ever could the brown bounded towards the boys, and skidded to a halt before the front rank in a shower of sand. Sweeping them all with friendly eyes once or twice he then glanced over his shoulder, seemingly waiting for his more sedate bronze brother before he chose his rider. As their eyes met, the bronze gave a low hum and bowed his head slightly, coming to a halt for a moment. The brown trilled in question at his pause, but the sound dipped to an unhappy whine as the steady bronze turned to look up at their mother. Something was wrong and they both understood that implicitly. While the brown gave a chrip and a trill perhaps trying to lighten the moment the bronze bowed deeply to the grieving queen and half crazed though she was, Yirath hummed softly and nodded her head in an echo of the wise young one's gesture. Yes. Go. It was their time now.

Nodding once more the bronze walked on towards the boys, reaching out for the mind of his rider before he even arrived.

User Image

As the bronze found his rider with ease the brown chirred briefly to his mother before turning back to the candidates and gave a happier cry. As his eyes alighted on one boy in particular his voice lifted in true joy, and he rushed forward.

elfgurl1234
Kanen watched as the two interacted, mildly amused to see the playful brown stop to wait for his more serious brother. As if that dynamic wasn't familiar... He couldn't help but feel a pang though when the two paused to look up at their mother. This was both the first and the last that they would ever see of her... Why had Kestril been killed? To what end? Her death benefited no one, and only brought pain for many. His thoughts now focused once more on the tragedy of Kestril and Yirath, Kanen didn't even notice the two dragonets approaching until he heard a voice in his mind.

Come with your Stromath, Kanen. Let us honour my mother, and let us serve the Weyr she leaves behind. They need our wisdom.

Kanen nearly gasped in surprise at feeling the sudden link between them, and his eyes immediately turned down to the young bronze. This beautiful, beautiful bronze... Surely this was a mistake of some sort. He couldn't possibly want him... (And he was hardly wise.) But, yes, his mother. He would do everything he could to keep her memory honored.

It is no mistake, Mine, and I know you will do your best.

Yes, he would not let them down. Turning to look at his brother, Kanen was equally pleased to see that Bannen had Impressed too. They had Impressed together. This was far more than he could have ever hoped for. "Let's go get our partners fed," Kanen (K'en now, he supposed) suggested with a smile. They had to be hungry after being in those eggs for so long.

AnimeEyeshime
The brown's arrival at the ranks of the candidates, complete with skidding stop and halt, was nothing less than Bannen expected of him, though it was curious he'd rushed ahead all the way simply to wait for his brother. The bronze seemed to have more serious tasks in mind, paying his respects to their dying mother. Perhaps that was Bannen's first clue...

Of course, who needed clues when Impression was such an obvious thing? He'd glanced towards his brother once more to see if he could read how Kanen was taking all of this, and the look on his face--he had a moment to spare a thought on the irony of the situation, as well as a brief worry for what would happen if he was left alone on the Sands, and Kanen went on to be a rider without him, mixed with true goodwill towards his twin for whom the support of a dragon (even an old-soul, stodgy, serious one) would be much appreciated--

And then Gneisth had his say in things, with a cry of joy and another forward rush that had Bannen wondering if perhaps there might be something more than sand to worry about this time the way the brown was hurtling forward.

"Instant pick-me-up" was something of an understatement. He could feel Gneisth's cheer and eagerness, his impatience to meet the others properly out-of-shell, his strong desire to say hello to Stromath and Tyeth and Larth and all the others who'd come after...as well as a very strong desire to be fed. "We'll make sure they're grinning later," Bannen--now B'nen--promised, with a wide smile of his own. He'd make sure of it. After all, what had happened was awful, but brooding on it wasn't going to change anything! They had to live life as it came at them, and for B'nen, it seemed he'd be living life as the rider of brown Gneisth. He couldn't be more pleased.

Gneisth trilled an agreement to K'en's suggestion, nudging B'nen towards the waiting meat before stepping over towards Stromath, eyes whirling a pleased green. the brown thought towards his bronze brother, amused. He had slightly forgotten about the food himself, it was true, but it was only because he was so excited to see B'nen and got carried away a bit. He was right though; food first, humor later.

"Of course, bronzerider~" B'nen teased. Of course his twin would Impress one of the few dragons he'd gotten the idea at the Touching was absolutely not going to be interested in him. And, if he thought about it, a dragon looking for Kanen's traits like dutifulness, kindness, a certain penchant for working hard...well, yes, the dragons they'd Impressed showed their differences quite clearly in more than simply color of their hide.
