The Eggs!

Layout
- The enormous Glowing Lifestone Egg is right in the centre of the clutch, and if anything raised even higher than is usual for a queen egg.
- The Bold Crystal Egg lies as close as possible to the raised queen egg, and leans companionably against the Inner Glow egg.
- The Ancient Strength Egg lies off to one side of the clutch, and seems to be keeping an eye on its siblings.
- The Quick Sparkle Egg stands out on its own by a fair way, and is the closest to the entrance to the Sands.
- The Expanding Mind Egg is almost the opposite of the Quick Sparkle, being quite a way away from the other eggs save for the Balancing Earth Egg towards the back of the sands.
- The Inner Glow Egg is in the centre, right next to the queen and leaning against The Bold Crystal Egg happily.
- The Sensuous Essence Egg sits a short distance away from the Inner Glow and Bold Crystal, pointing towards them with interest but not seeming desperate to be beside them right this very moment.
- The Jovial Eclipse Egg is placed fairly centrally. It doesn't seem to move from its place, but from one day to the next it is never tilted towards the same clutch-sibling.
- The Questionable Magnet Egg is fairly central, not far from the Jovial Eclipse.
- The Balancing Earth Egg rests close against the Expanding Mind Egg, closer to the rest of the clutch than the sibling it seems to have opted to be with though.
- The Unquestionable Love Egg is part of the central group around the queen, and is tilted slightly towards the golden egg.
- The Honorable Champion Egg is on the edge of the main group, notably not near to any of the largest eggs.
- The Considered Investigator Egg is on the outskirts of the clutch, and points towards the entrance to the sands.
- The Unpolished Azure Egg sits slightly back from the center of the clutch, and leans towards the Resilient Warped Egg, perhaps concerned for its sibling.
- The Resilient Warped Egg is somewhat off to the side of the main clutch, either avoiding the others or being given a wide berth by them.
- The Bursting Shard Egg is another a little way off from the main group, and leans at a slightly odd angle.

The Glowing Lifestone Egg
This egg is unmistakeably a gold. Easily the largest of the clutch, dwarfing most of the eggs, the Glowing Lifestone is difficult to get a read on. Flashes of thoughts, by turns bold and demure, seem to be interrupted when a Candidate touches the egg and motion almost always accompanies the touch, as if the youth has caught the attention of the dragonet within. All are paid attention, be they male or female, and all are sized up - not judged, precisely, but certainly appraised.

The Bold Crystal Egg - Green Pyrth, looks to Persephone
While this eggs shell might not be the brightest or prettiest to look at when compared to some of the others in the clutch - and its certainly not the largest resting comfortably somewhere in the middle - placing a hand on this shell will give one a sense of inner self assurance. This egg also doesn't want you to leave, you get the impression that it might actually follow you off the sands if it could get away with it! This egg can generally be found clustered up as close as it can get to one of its siblings.

The Ancient Strength Egg - Bronze Stromath looks to Kannen
This egg is old, which really doesn't make much sense since its well..still an egg. None the less when one lays a hand on this egg's shell they get the impression of age, good ole reliable wisdom and a steady spirit - well as long as your following the proper way things should be done anyways, woe behold the candidate who might touch this egg the wrong way or worse think the wrong things towards it, a flash of irritation might then show itself and the candidate might get the impression that the hatchling inside wants to have a good talking to with them later on. It is a large egg and likely contains a bronze or large brown.

The Quick Sparkle Egg - Blue Larth, looks to Brynja
Why are you even bothering to look at all those other eggs? Clearly there's only one here worth looking at and it's not those ones over there! What? You don't believe me..I'll show you, I'll hatch right now! It'll be the quickest hatching you've ever seen too. Oh..you think my shell is pretty? How nice of you to say so! Why didn't you say that at the beginning then? I suppose I'll stay in here a bit longer so you can admire it for a while. If anything this egg demands attention, though it's hard to find any sort of ill will in its attention seeking ways. It's a largish egg perhaps a brown.

The Expanding Mind Egg - Blue Zurith, looks to Falawny
It's hard to get a real feel for this egg. On the surface, it seems as if the dragon inside is mute or sleeping. Oh, you can tell there's something in there, as under the surface it feels like someone is watching and listening to you intently, wanting to learn about you, but it is giving you nothing about itself in return. The egg rests on the edges of the Clutch, its only near-by companion the Balancing Earth Egg. The size of the egg suggests that this is either a Green or a Blue.

The Inner Glow Egg - Brown Gneisth looks to Bannen
One of the big eggs in the Clutch (relatively speaking), this egg contains either a Brown or a Bronze. Touching this egg immediately gives you a feeling of goodwill and amusement. If you're upset, you won't be for long with the Inner Glow egg pushing you into a state where you have to laugh or let go. This egg seems interested in getting to know you and hearing whatever you need to tell it. Mixed in with all that good humour, though, is the sense that this dragon is more than ready to come into the world and it intends to make the most of it when it does.

The Sensuous Essence Egg
This medium sized egg - either a blue or a small brown by size - is amongst the main group, and when touched it gives out a warm confident welcome. It reaches out to males and females, confident and shy candidates alike but if a candidate tries to close out its welcome they will definitely get the impression that the egg is sulking. Finally there is something undeniably sensual about this egg, and a kind of magnetism that makes it hard to forget.

The Jovial Eclipse Egg - Bronze Orthoth, looks to Cormeric
HELLO, HELLO! This egg practically blasts you with its personality before you even get your hands on its half-dark, half-bright brown-and-tan shell. It's so pleased to meet you that you aren't sure its even registering you as anything other than an outlet for its excitement. Easily the largest egg in the Clutch next to the Gold egg-- with maybe one other exception-- this egg's size suggests that it is probably a Bronze. Its personality, however, makes it seem like the largest egg in the whole Clutch.

The Questionable Magnet Egg - Brown Heth, looks to Kahar
What are you up to? Is everything okay out there?...you're not leaving already are you? Where are you going? Are just examples of the sorts of prodding questions candidates might sense when they lay a hand on this egg. It seems that this dragon wants to know all about you, your friends, the type of day you had and anything else that might come to mind. It also doesn't really want you to leave..or at least it wants to know where you're going next and when or if you'll be back. Candidates get the sense that this is a social beast, but perhaps a bit of a clingy one.

The Balancing Earth Egg - Green Malath, looks to Analyssa
Snuggled up to the Expanding Mind egg, this pale green and tan egg exudes a calm, unruffled sense of attention at you. The creature inside doesn't appear to be bothered by you wanting to know what it's about, and is happy to engage you in personality pushing. If you approach it with an unsettled or upset mind, however, you get the sense that this egg wants to do nothing more than help you put that aside so you can finish the Touching with a clear and easy mind. This egg is likely a Green or a Blue.

The Unquestionable Love Egg - Green Rhodonth, looks to Liah
Every candidate who places their hands on this egg will walk away knowing that the dragon inside loves them, loves them and everyone around them. This egg is a bit on the small side when compared to all of its siblings exudes an aura of love. This egg will let you know that everything will turn out alright...eventually. Though you might want to watch your step when you leave! The sands can be treacherous you know!

The Honorable Champion Egg - Blue Pectolath, looks to Winderick
This egg is definitely judging every hand that comes to rest upon it, and candidates with a selfish or cruel streak will feel almost burned by the contact once it has the measure of them. Those it finds worthy, however, it welcomes warmly and seems happy to have them stay as long as they please. This is a mid sized egg - probably a blue but possibly a very small brown - and while it is placed fairly centrally it seems to lean away from any large eggs near by.

The Considered Investigator Egg
At first when hands touch this egg they will feel... Well, nothing really; this egg takes quite a while to do anything. Even when candidates do feel a reaction from it they won't get an opinion from it, only a sense that they are being studied thoughtfully by a bright and curious mind. Set close to the edge of the clutch, this small egg most likely contains a green.

The Gilded Verdant Egg - Bronze Tyeth, looks to Nemmol
Cocked at a jaunty angle, this large egg is situated within the main cluster of eggs on a low rise of sand, and its lustrous shell is a rich shade of green. When touched, the first feeling this egg gives of is an overwhelming sense of pride and confidence. If it were possible for a solid egg to preen, it would do so. To those who touch it, this egg takes a superior but friendly attitude. Cunning and entertaining, the dragonet inside is happy to mingle with everyone who comes to it, though it will eventually remind a lingering Candidate that they have other eggs to visit.

The Unpolished Azure Egg - Brown Torsheth looks to Rufet
The Unpolished Azure Egg is one of the larger of the clutch, and judging by its size is probably a brown or small bronze. This rich blue egg has a rough surface, but the feeling it gives off is much smoother. A mellow and welcoming sensation is given off from being touched, and the dragonet inside seems to appreciate and trust any who visit it. Should a candidate touch the egg with negative emotion, however, the egg will give off a feeling of slow confusion and try and give some comfort.

The Resilient Warped Egg - Green Mawsith, looks to Mya
This egg is normal in respects of size, color, and texture, but its shape is a bit… lumpy, almost as if it were kicked a few times while hardening. The moment this egg is touched, the Candidate will be overwhelmed by the frustration contained within. This dragonet wants OUT, and will completely ignore any advice or consolation offered. If the candidate lingers long enough, whatever is inside may settle long enough to inspect the visitor, but it won’t be long before the candidate feels the dragonet inside wriggling about under the shell again, stubbornly seeking freedom. Size indicates a green.

The Bursting Shard Egg - Blue Troiseth, look to Alain
When a candidate first touches this green-to-blue sized egg, they will feel… nothing. Perhaps the warmth of the egg is lent from the hot sands; perhaps this one is an unfortunate dud? Before it can be abandoned, however, a sudden surge of amusement will rupture from within, as if the dragonet inside just can’t contain its laughter. Amused at its trick, the egg will roll in is own mirth and try to cajole its visitor into cheering up and relaxing.

The Hidden Egg - Green Treeth, looks to Viddle

Time had passed, but alone on the sands and in her heart Yirath could not have said how much. The queen had grown thin and her hide had grown dull, cracked, and was beginning to fade to the same desolate grey as her eyes. All that was left to her was her duty to see her children safely to Impression, and she carried out that duty obsessively. Since the day of the Touching nobody had been able to so much as set foot on the sands; any who attempted it found themselves driven back by otherworldly screams from the bereaved dragon, and by vicious snaps of her jaws. Would she actually hurt or even kill a human now, maddened with the loss of her rider as she was? Nobody was willing to be the one who found out the hard way.

With nobody able to get close to check on the clutch and with Yirath uncommunicative nobody could say for sure how close the eggs were to hatching. As such along with the turmoil and grief caused by the loss of the weyrwoman the whole Weyr was on high alert for that unmistakable sound that announced the beginning for Yirath's children, and the beginning of the end for the desolate gold herself.

The sun was just beginning to set when Yirath finally raised her head and began to hum.

Perhaps that was fitting.

Trusting that his candidates were bright enough to hurry back to the barracks and get their robes on the Candidatemaster raced down the hallways of the Weyr to ensure he arrived at the entrance to the sands first. A quick glance revealed to him that Yirath now stood behind her clutch with her wings spread out above them, savage orange swirling brilliantly through her otherwise dull grey eyes. The sight made him shudder. Poor beast. She shouldn't exist, not like that. At least her suffering would end soon, and how strange was it to wish for the death of his Queen? Shells he hoped her huge golden daughter Impressed safely, and to a girl up to taking on the heavy burden that lay ahead.

"Wait there!" he called to the first candidates as they began to arrive. "Boys get on the right, girls get on the left and wait!" With that said he waited for a couple of minutes until most of the candidates were present. Not in the habit of hanging around long for latecomers, the candidatemaster cleared his throat and spoke once again. "Listen up! Walk onto the sands in a quiet, orderly manner. Do not approach the eggs. I trust you to maintain the respectful distance you have been taught, and I also trust you to realise that if you go closer than that you might not walk away in one piece, or at all for that matter. A dragon without its rider is a dragon without half its mind, so let me impress upon you most firmly that Yirath is not safe and must not be approached under any circumstances. Girls, I'm looking at you especially! I've no doubt every one of you has your eye on that great golden egg but when the new Queen hatches you must not rush to greet her in the hopes she'll just pick you because she saw you first...."

The dark-eyed man sighed then and ran his fingers through his hair. Shards he hoped this didn't end in a bloodbath. Nothing more he could do to prepare them though; they were either ready or they weren't. Here went then. "Good luck candidates. For Kestril and for Yirath, make Benden proud." Throwing his charges a salute the candidatemaster stepped aside, allowing them access to the sands. It was time.

Roscoe arrived quickly enough at the entrance with the others, it was odd to see the Golden queen there without her rider and it had certainly been a trying few days for the Weyr, even those in the sands would be hard pressed to be festive given the bittersweet ending they all knew had to come from this hatching.

Still Yirath was obviously suffering, she wasn't half the beast she had once been and Roscoe did not like seeing her like that, it was fitting and wonderful that she had had the strength to stay and fulfill the last of her duties..but sad as well. None the less he entered the sands along with the other boys and turned his eyes to the eggs. He could only hope that the hatching would go well - if for no other reason then to help lessen the pallor that hung over the Weyr itself.

How shocking it had been when word of the Weyrwomans' ruthless assassination had flown about the Weyr walls. It was....numbing. Tears had been shed while others simply had that haunted look in their eyes.

The worse had been the Lady Yirath.
Her screams, that night, had been far too much like a humans'. Mya had been unable to return to the realm of dreams; she kept hearing that cry of angst over and over again, even when little Akemi had tried to offer a form of comfort to her human.

As the Candidate Master ushered them towards the Sands, Mya gently urged her little flitter to find a human to stay with as she listened. The elder Candidate had nearly broken down at the sight of the Lady Queen when the group came....a shadow of the spitfire that had kept an eye on all of them a mere few days beforehand. But.....she felt a surge of respect, a loving mother till the very end.

Bowing to the Master as his words, Mya slipped in so she was about in the middle of the group. Eyes were kept solely on the eggs, lest the tears threatening come at the sight of the Queens' shadowed and broken form or she fall into the eyes that spoke of a broken soul.

Nemmol felt the hum in his bones as he ran back to the Barracks. He and his fellow Candidate had ditched their cleaning chore to hightail it to their robes so they could get to the Sands before the first egg cracked. Usually it took a bit of time after the humming began before the eggs began hatching, Nemmol recalled, but he didn't want this to be the first time it didn't work that way. He was stripping his tunic off before they even reached the entrance to the Barracks, and when he reached his bunk he just dumped the top on the bed and began pulling on his robes. The Master wasn't there. They must be expected to meet by the Sands this time.

He glanced at the chaos of the room as he changed pants.

He caught sight of Roscoe on his way out, and kicked out of his shoes. This would be the day he Impressed. He had to be confident in that if his goals were to be realized.

Sandals on, Nemmol joined the staggered stream of boys leaving the Barracks and joined them in their run, surpassing several. He didn't take on every athletic chore in the weyr for nothing. He caught up to Roscoe and fell into step with him, casting a quick smile at the other boy. They were a few boys back in line, but that was fine. Dragons didn't pick the first ones onto the sands; they picked their perfect partner.

Nemmol watched the Candidate Master for signs of when they would be let in, punctuating it with glances at those around him.

And then they were being let onto the sands with their final warnings. He found a place a comfortable distance away from the eggs and took it up, moving when a boy got in front of him so that he could better see the eggs and be seen. Dragons might pick the right one for them, but it would be more efficient for the hatchlings if they could actually see their rider, rather than having to dig through rows of Candidates for them. Now they could only hope a Bronze hatched first, to give a strong, traditional start to the Clutch.

Viddle was in the barracks writing a letter when she heard the humming. Della started reacting as well, but the Candidate didn't stop to pay the flit any mind right now she was in a hurry! Quickly stripping from her usual cloths she pulled on her white robe for the second and last time. Even quicker, nimble fingers danced over the laces of her sandals as she laced them up. Then she was putting her long legs to work sprinting to the sands, Della right behind her. She slowed to a trot when she could see the candidate master and stopped on the spot when he said to wait. She stopped so suddenly she almost fell on her face even, only just catching herself.

Oh goodness it was time. It was time! The eggs were hatching!

Della swooped into Viddle's shoulder and she let the flit land but did her best to quietly impress on the Flit how important it was that she wait outside and not cause trouble. The little green was still learning. Viddle chewed on her lip while she waited with the candidate master and others until the man started to speak.

She had no desire to approach Yirath nor her unhatched gold daughter, she knew that the new queen wouldn't pick her anyway. She'd come to the sands and watched the queen from outside many times and ached for her. When told to get into lines Viddle moved quickly into place, not wasting time or energy with her movements. She scanned her fellow candidates; pausing longest on the girl with stained hands, and hoped all would be safe, that none of them would do something stupid and get someone hurt.

Following his fellow Candidates out onto the sands, Kahar felt a little more nervous than excited this time around. That scream the gold Yirath had given out the day of the touching had practically been ingrained into his mind. Things were really serious now, he could tell that much. It was what kept him from rushing out onto the sands as he might have done if the assassination had never happened.

Once out onto the sands, he stared at Yirath for a moment, frowning to see her in such a state. It must be horrible for her right now..

Quietly nodding to the candidatemaster, he took in a deep breath and looked towards the others briefly. He couldn't help but feel a certain pressure about things today that wasn't there when they were doing the touchings.

As he waited, he shifted his weight every now and then. He hoped this wouldn't take too long. Even with how dead serious things were, he wasn't sure how long he could really stay still here.

Alain couldn't believe it. How could someone murder the Weyrwoman, let alone right before the Hatching? It was a speculative time in the Weyr. All the candidates seemed to be in shock. Even he couldn't joke about something like this. He heard the humming of the dragons and raced back to his room to change his clothing.

He made it right before they needed to walk onto the sands. He made sure to stay further back, the thought of getting mauled by a Gold was a bit much for him. Even with whers he didn't want to get that close unless the handler was around. He looked to Gold Yirath and sighed. She once looked like a regal queen and now she looked ready to get done with everything. He prayed the next Weyrwoman was strong enough to handle the burdens that were about to happen.

A glance at the eggs her wings were above, Alain hoped that this last and huge clutch would bring forth a splendor for Yirath's farewell. A sad time, but hopefully it would end without blood shed or worse.

Jordan, who'd been napping when the humming began sat up abruptly and was thankful he had a top bunk. The eggs.

He swung his long legs over the side and dropped to the ground, nearly stepping on someone who had been rolling out of the bottom bunk in the next bed over. Neither boy stopped to apologize or look, though, just threw on their robes and ran out the door. Jordan was aware that they would have to wait for more Candidates to show before they would be let near the eggs, but he'd rather be there quickly. Judging from the boys and girls rushing by and nearly knocking him over in the hallway, he guessed he wouldn't have to wait very long.

Being around so many people grated on his nerves. He wasn't in the mood to handle too many people right now, but the eggs obviously weren't sensitive to that. And it wasn't as if he could ask them to postpone the Hatching for that, much as he'd like to.

While he waited, he looked around for Pahlan, but was distracted when the Candidate Master began giving them their last instructions. Oh well. He'd catch up or be late and get in trouble for it. That would suck.

Jordan placed himself at the edge of Candidates farthest from the Queen and let other Candidates go by him to get closer to the eggs. He eyed Yirath cautiously for most of the wait for the eggs to hatch.

Persephone rubbed away at her swollen, puffy pink laced eyes. When coming to the Weyr she had never even thought that something as horrible as losing such a beloved rider would occur, yet here they all where each baring their own emotions of the event. Some seemed angry, others seemed neutral, then there were those that we similar to the girl; sobbing helplessly for days on end.

A deep rumbling hum cut through the air, and just for a moment the sandy haired brunette was at a lose. What was that noise? Bright green eyes scanned around for just a moment, all of the candidates around her scrambled and reached for their robes and sandals that were hidden and tucked away in various locations throughout the bunk-house. Oh! The eggs…

A hushed sniffle escaped from the petite figured vintner as she pulled on her stiff white robes and slid into her sandals, today was the day and as much as she was excited to see all of the eggs again her heart felt too heavy for her to even manage a smile. One foot after the other the short messy haired candidate ignored the other girls in the barracks, some where fussing over little things others were laughing and carrying on in good spirits, it was so odd seeing such mixed emotions from her peers. Shaking her head some Persephone folded her hands behind her back as she walked in a brisk manner towards the hatching grounds. As she drew closer her legs began to move more quickly, the excitement that she was trying to repress instinctively getting the best of her long willowy limbs. They all should still be in mourning for the lose of the gold rider and yet--- the eggs were hatching, a new generation of riders were about to be made, there was nothing to feel guilty for, nothing at all. Brushing her stained fingertips through her spiked locks Persephone found herself arriving at the sands in a fairly timely manner.

Yirath, the poor beast. As the candidate master spoke Persephone couldn’t help but begin to weep openly. It was so horrible! The poor gold was suffering so much, it wasn’t fair---

Sobbing into her white sleeve the short, childlike wine-maker toddled onto the sands when the go ahead was given, she was so happy for the Hatching and so sad because after today the great gold would not live to see another day. It would be--- so horrible.

By the time the candidates had filed onto the sands the Gilded Verdant Egg and the Quick Sparkle Egg had already begun to rock and show hairline cracks. Yirath gave a low growl, sweeping the white-robed humans, her eyes still flashing with juxtaposed brilliant orange and dead grey. They were not worthy, never worthy of her children, of her very last clutch and her glorious daughter but they were all there was. Snarling savagely again the gold took a half step back and transferred her gaze to the rocking eggs.

Only a few moments after all the candidates were lined up, the Gilded Verdant Egg egg burst open revealing a handsome striped bronze of impressive size. Shaking off his wings he staggered to his feet and gave a loud bugle as he swept the sand with a haughty gaze. A rumble from above him caused the hatchling to look up abruptly at his mother, and for a moment the proud hatchling looked uncertain. As Yirath rumbled once more and tossed her head at the candidates however he seemed to accept what he saw and set off towards the boys with his head held high.

He could just see the egg break open and a bronze calling out to those around. Yirath seemed to want to tell him something before allowing him to find His. He watched the young dragon make his way towards them. The brozne seemed like a proud one and he hoped that His would keep him that way.

Given what he had felt from the eggs upon touching Roscoe was not overly surprised to see the Quick Sparkle egg rocking already, but the hatching of the bronze took whatever attention he would have put on the other egg away and he watched as the large striped creature headed towards them. Yirath;s growl caused him to give the queen a cautious look but she was still staying well back though obviously displeased with the entire event - that was to be expected he supposed but he decided to keep an eye on her anyways..not that running would actually help any of them if the giant queen did decide to go on a rampage, should that happen they all might as well be herd of wherries. Hopefully the queen still retained her regard for humans however..even with the loss of her rider.

Sighing slightly he turned his attention back to the bronze hatchling that was coming their way.

Things had been gloomy since the Touching. The death of Weyrwoman Kestril struck at them all pretty hard. And with a hatching about to happen! What sort of grim omen was this? Dezima couldn't help but feel wary of what the hatching would bring. Hopefully it gave the Weyr new reason to be upbeat again, though the loss of their Weyrwoman and soon their Queen was going to be hard.

But when the hum started, even the grim state of Benden couldn't stay so. The weyrbrat perked up with renewed excitement at that sound, rushing back to the barracks to strip out of everything only to replace it with the white candidates robe. And sandals. She saw some of her fellows moving about just as quickly - though she didn't spot Brynja.

Dressed and giving her flitter a strong command to stay in the barracks today, Dezima joined the group that had gathered around the Candidatemaster. Just beyond him, on the sands, she could see the Queen. It was sad to see her like so. And again, she hoped the hatching would go well and bring them some joy again. Brynja, where are you! Okay she probably could have looked a little harder. But then they were being told sternly which sides to stand on and not to approach the eggs. Nodding her head, Dezima followed the girls quietly towards the left side of the sands. And no sooner had they all taken their places that the first eggs started to rock and crack with the first egg of the hatching bursting open to reveal a handsome and large bronze! A bronze as the first hatchling? This was a good sign, wasn't it?!

Despite the fact that she was here for the eggs, Viddle could not take her eyes off the distressed Queen. She wished with all her being that there was something she could do to ease the Golds pain, but she also knew that soon she would take care of it herself. Swallowing down her tears, which she had yet to show to anyone she turned her gaze back to the eggs as two started to rock. She awwed softly when the bronze broke free. Yes, he was gangly and ugly, but to Viddle, he was beautiful.

The young woman's gaze turned back to the Queen at her rumble to her son, and again she could not take her eyes off the queen until the little Bronze moved.
