Lina's Profile
Character Name: Lina (Melina before Impression)
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Sexual Orientation: Really not interested/no preference
Craft/Rank: Journeyman Star Smith
Description: Of a shortish height, Lina has often had to make adjustments to her world to make do, such as putting crates on the telescope stands to be able to reach the eye piece. She has shoulder-length brown hair of a rather dusty, ashy color, though in the rare times that she's out during the day, it has gold glints when the sun touches it. Her hazel eyes are flecked with gray, giving them an odd yet somewhat beautiful appearance. She is thin and athletic by nature, as running up and down all of those observatory steps is bound to keep anyone in shape. She doesn't have much in the way of womanly attributes, though she isn't exactly flat chested. Her face is plain with not much to draw the eye, but she has dimples when she smiles and a light spread of freckles across her entire body, showing up well on her fair skin. She can often be seen with a pair of binoculars hanging around her neck, or with her eye glued to a telescope, un-moving for hours at a time.
Personality: Growing up with her brothers already out of the home and spending most of her time with her parents, Lina has a rather elevated air of maturity about her. She still gets along well with her peers, but she might just choose "peers" that are actually older than herself.
Lina comes with a single minded focus that is excellent for finishing projects and helping her keep her attention focused on a single object in the night sky for hours on end, but rather hurts her socially. She has a tendency to talk and possibly obsess over whatever object is her focus to the exclusion of all else. This makes her come across as possibly conceited and not much caring about the lives of others, but she can't help it and isn't even aware of her tendency to do so. This trait lends its way into others - she is hard working, diligent, and hates to give up on anything, lending her some tenacity as well. But, all work and no play leads Lina to be somewhat dull, only well-versed in the Star craft and not much else. There is such a thing as being too dedicated, and this is definitely a factor for Lina. She normally has to be dragged away from a telescope and forced to attend social events, though she will enjoy herself once there, after a small period of pouting.
Being in a craft that involves extensive night-time hours, she is on a rather backwards circadian rhythm - dawn is her cue to sleep, and she wakes up in the late afternoon, finishing up any tasks that must be accomplished before sunset comes and it's time again to watch the stars. As such, upon coming to the Weyr, if a schedule change is in order, she might well be grumpy and grumbling for a while, as these things are never easy to change. Most of her friends back at the Star Smith Hall were also in her occupation, so friendship here will be a new aspect for her as well, as almost everyone sleeps at night. Wher handlers will probably be a good source of people for her to interact with, as they keep her strange hours.
She is generally friendly, but not the best at communication, so she comes across wrong to some people. Her heart is in the best place and those that aren't put off by her single minded manner (she may go weeks without talking to someone if something is interesting enough and she isn't forcibly interrupted) will find her a steady character, and one that will always be there for them. Persistent people have a better chance at getting to know her, as she simply tends to forget about people that don't make it a point to be part of her life. Thankfully, her passions can be changed and added to, depending on her knowledge of the subject and its interest to her. She's intelligent and quick to pick up on new things, so as long as you can get her attention long enough to show her something new, chances are you'll have a new partner at your activity. Just, remind her to get some sleep and to still eat, will ya?
Lina and Galith
Lina's tight focus on the task at hand and Galith's broad way of looking at the world are quite a stark contrast to one another, but as with every dragon/rider pairing it is a contrast that strengthens the whole that the two of them make up. Where Lina might miss something because she has her mind fixed on one thing Galith will quietly point it out to her, and on the other hand that focus of Lina's will make sure they get things done. Each of them have their own problems with communication, allowing them to understand the failing in one another rather than becoming frustrated with it. A final detail - a trivial thing perhaps but still something the pair can enjoy about one another - is their natural rhythm of sleep and waking. Where other pairs moan and groan at night watch duty these two might well actually volunteer: Galith will love the peace of the nightime world, and Lina will have the chance to study the heavens with her quiet companion by her side.

Lina's History
Epsilon Clutch Hatching Melina stood her first Hatching for the Epsilon clutch at Trine Weyr, the home of the Search dragon that had found her. Her very first time on the sands, if admittedly towards the end of the clutch, Galith found her, and they have been bonded ever since. Lina is delighted that Galith shares her love of being up at night and enjoys sky gazing with her - the two are as perfect a pair as there ever was, and take much enjoyment from each other's company.
Before Arrival at Trine....... Melina was always interested in the night sky while she was growing up. She was good at her math lessons and applied herself vigorously to her studies, gobbling down her lessons with enthusiasm. Her two brothers were many Turns older than her, so while she technically has siblings, she never saw them much and was treated for the most part as an only child, just with more experienced parents. When she was old enough to be apprenticed out, she was accepted to the Star Smith Hall in Ruatha to her excited delight. Always the studious type, she advanced well and helped on numerous projects, plotting comet paths and trails, helping to observe weather patterns, and many other things that are the responsibility of the Star Smith Hall. They had been tracking a meteor in the north, but the masters at her hall had decided that they needed eyes elsewhere on the continent, Aquor, to be exact, high up in the mountain ranges. She accompanied her master to assist with notes and double-checking information, and they were dropped off via a Fort Rider. Their return trip was to be managed by Trine Weyr, as they would be in Trine territory. Her master got the necessary readings, but really was quite disappointed that they wouldn't have eyes constantly in the skies here, to report back changes as needed. When the Trine dragon Searched Melina, they had the answer to their problems. As some of the very first Star Smiths were dragon riders, she was quite excited and promised her masters to make good use of her time in Trine Weyr, even if she didn't Impress. Hers is a craft that can be performed anywhere, as long as you can see the night sky.

Name: Galith
Colour: Green
Inspired by: Galaxy
Size: Above Average
Build: Average
Personality: Never an early riser (or a daytime riser if she can help it) Green Galith has a tendency to keep her eyes on the sky. She's bright but it is her gut instincts that she listens to. Galith 'feels out' the right course of action, trusting instincts above all else and can come across as wise but not particularly smart – partly because it's sometimes difficult to figure out what she's trying to get across. You see, Galith has trouble distilling concepts into words and tends to communicate in emotions and visions rather then words. She's quiet even among other dragons and will 'speak' only to Hers. That's not to say she's meek – Galith is simply steady, patient, ever present, like the stars she so loves to watch. She doesn't like becoming too fixed on one things – it doesn't really sit well with her when she's trying to get a feel for many things at once; of course this tendency to look to the broader picture makes it harder to focus. However, Galith is nothing if not patient, giving others the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity even if she isn't interested.... but when she is, Galith is thorough and diligent in her explorations.

Fire Lizards
A pot sits by the shared Weyrling hearth, with a small flit egg resting snugly in the hot sands inside. Lina keeps a close eye on it, but it doesn't seem all that close to hatching

Thoughts on the Touching
The Touching was an amazing event. It's one thing to know that there are eggs there on the Sands, eggs that you'll be trying to Impress. It's another to feel the heat of the sands beneath your feet, see the eggs in front of your eyes, and to be bowing to Brakiath and Abigail, and then to be able to touch them.
They gave the eggs all nicknames, so we could tell them apart and identify them when we return for the Hatching. The first one I approached was dubbed the "tailing trail" egg, and it's a rather curious little one. Aside from the initial blunt questioning, it seemed confident and full of life. I hadn't been expecting to get a glimpse of the egg's personalities so soon! I had thought that the Touching was for them to get to know us, not that it would be a mutual experience. That was quite the pleasant surprise.
Of all the thirteen, of course I have my favorites. The tailing trail egg tied with the scattered stars egg for first ranking. This egg is simply amazing - you touch it, and it's like you can feel everything, every tiny thing that is happening at any given moment. It doesn't seem to be able to focus very well, but I doubt much slips past its notice. It doesn't try hard to win you over, but it's not mean or hostile either. It simply is. My next favorite was the distant sea egg. It has a very welcoming personality, and seemed to treat all of us Candidates with the same warm welcome, not showing any favoritism at all. Seems like it'll be a wonderful dragon when it hatches. The last one that really caught my attention as a possible life-mate for myself was the orbiting egg. It seems to like being around others at all times, but is very welcoming and probably will never meet a stranger. The queen egg, of course, was marvelous. She'll be such a sweet-tempered little queen, strong, brave, but fair and kind at the same time. There isn't a mean bone in her little body, and she'll do Trine Weyr proud, I'm sure.
The Touching has made me so much more eager for the actual Hatching, though I must admit I'm rather nervous. Up to this point, I've kind of seen becoming rider as a way to be closer to those Star Smiths of old. But there's more to it than that. These arent' senseless creatures to help me appear to be greater than I am. They're real beings, with feelings, and it's a real partnership. The Touching has already changed my perceptions, and I'm sure the Hatching will further change them.

The Hatching - Meeting Galith
As the two big eggs continued to move, the scattered stars green finally rose to her feet and set off towards the male candidates. When she reached them she sat down an inspected the group, her steady eyes seeming to take in all of them at once. She spent some moments there, but eventually got back to her feet and moved onward to look at the assembled female candidates in the same manner. After a thorough study of that group she twisted her head around to regard the four remaining eggs, two moving and two statue still. Raising her head she then met the eyes of her mother before turning her gaze around the sands to take in every human present, and then her eyes swept across every green, black, blue, crimson, brown, silver, bronze and gold dragon settled up on the perches.
Turning her head to female candidates once more at last the green's calm eyes fixed on one single individual, the one that was to be Hers.
"Melina. I am Galith. We are one, from now until time ends."
And with that there were no more dragons on the sand, even the luminous egg and rocky band egg stilled as Galith found her rider. Was this a sign that something was wrong, or merely a moment of calm before another storm of activity? As ever with hatchings, only time would tell.
Melina hadn't much been watching the green that hadn't left her egg yet. Finally, movement caught her eye and she saw the little green heading over to the male candidates. Trying to repress the sigh that wanted to come yet again, she stopped watching the green for a while. She had rather liked that one as an egg - it had made her think about the wide expanse of the universe. All of the dragons here seemed to have celestial patterns, and it made her sore to think that she wouldn't Impress at this Hatching. After all, there was the queen, and then a few big eggs left. None of them would be for her, after all.
The little green came back around towards the females, and Melina didn't even hold her breath. She had just about convinced herself that this time wasn't for her. She'd simply have to try again. Her thoughts seemed to be backed up by the fact that the green, a bit larger than some of the other greens she had seen tonight, seemed to look past them, and took another look at the boys and all the other candidates. No......not distracted.....analyzing. Melina perked up slightly - the green was simply taking everything in. And by everything...Melina didn't think a single detail had been missed by the hatchling. That tiny spark of hope that refused to be doused started flaring into a flame, and just about that time......
Melina. I am Galith. We are one, from now until time ends
Melina stumbled forward, almost in shock, heading towards the seated hatchling that looked so dignified and wonderful. ...Mine? Melina thought at the green, shocked but extraordinarily happy. Oh Galith, you're wonderful! she thought at her dragon, stroking her elegant green's little neck. Galith said nothing, but radiated her pleasure along with a decent amount of hunger. Yes, let's get you fed, of course! Melina said, walking by her lifemate towards the stands where the meat was waiting for them. She couldn't just see Galith at her side, she could feel her. Oh, it was such a wonderful feeling! Galith didn't seem all that chatty, and Melina could appreciate that.
She was trying to hurry over to the stands, but Galith was moving more slowly, taking her time, watching everything, so Melina had to slow her single-minded pace to stay with her dragon. She at first felt a slight bit of annoyance, but replaced it quickly. Maybe she did need to slow down for a bit. She wondered vaguely what Galith was thinking, and after a short pause, images began showing themselves to Melina, startling her so badly she tripped a bit on the hem of her robe, though she caught herself. After her initial surprise, she was able to enjoy not just the images, but the sense of things that Galith was sending her. It was entirely detached - no sense of favoritism, or influence, just simply how things were.
It was with a broad smile on her face that Melina - no, Lina, fed Galith her first pieces of meat on the sidelines.
