(This is an orp for candidates to get a little hands on experience. ^_^ You may join in at any time, but will be counted late after my third post.)
The sun had just fully crested over the horizon. Hair still damp from his morning bath, S'kor strolled down the path with his bronze. They were heading to a wide open area where Scarath could stretch out and still have plenty of room. The large dragon could take up quite a bit of space. Need to start laying back on the treats, I think He teased the dragon. S'kor positioned the dragon so the coming candidates could view him from all angles. After Scarath had settled himself, the rider moved up by his head and scratched his eyeridges. "Suppose to be a second rider and dragon coming for this. Oh look, there's Optheli."
Scarath responded as dignitantly as any bronze, They are so tiny Mine, and don't count for much. He settled himself and lowered his head to the ground for the affection from his rider. His eyes whirled slow and blue. It is Dynith and Hers. They volunteered when they head. Good morning Dynith. He didn't bother mention that he'd hinted to Dynith to get the siblings together for a short time.
Optheli loved the mornings. It smelled so great in the cool air. Her hand rested on the shoulder of her nervous green as they came into the area. She saw her brother and gave a wave, "Mornin' S'kor! Lovely morning for this I'd say." Dynith go ahead and set yourself out of Scarath's way. I'm sure the candidates will be arriving soon, Optheli nudged Ismay to go curl up with the dragon while she went to talk to S'kor.
"Been busy? You've got a lot of dragon there, must be nice to get some help today." She grinned at her older brother. Knowing him he would take excellent care no matter how big his dragon was. "Poor Dynith is afraid none of the candidates will notice her next to Scarath. I'm sure a couple will come over to work on her."
Dynith flipped her wings and laid down. She eyed the bronze. Hello Scarath. Mine was looking forward to this all night. Her eyes whirled green with yellow tinge as her rider stepped away. She was getting nervous about the candidates not showing up. The soothing present of the green flit helped a little.

It was barely daytime. This made Peradan not very happy. She had never been a morning person, even if getting up in the morning was a necessary part of both craft and Weyr life. That didn't mean she had to enjoy it, especially when the sun was barely out and her eyes still felt half glued together and she had been having a wonderful dream.
But there were Candidate lessons today. That was more than enough to drag Peradan out of bed. She got dressed neatly, wearing clothes she was prepared to get messy. Sooner or later she would have to give up on the notion of finery entirely- or at least until her dragon was full grown enough to eat on its own. Until then, she would have to pack away everything carefully. The thought made Peradan heave a loud sigh. She hastily stifled herself, lest she wake anyone who wasn't going to be going. This wasn't mandatory, to the best of her knowledge. Just a few riders willing to help out the newest members of the Weyr.
There wasn't really time to sit down and eat a proper breakfast. Peradan had given up that in favor of sleeping a scant few more minutes. As a result, she drank her klah still scalding, and carried a meatroll with her as she dashed outside, her dark hair hastily pulled back so that it wouldn't be in her face for the lesson. No time to look better, no time to actually take more than a bite or two of her breakfast. Peradan found herself too excited to be properly hungry anyway. She hadn't really 'met' a dragon since being Searched, and there was the distinct possibility that she would today. And riders too! All the riders she had met had been polite enough, but none had really had time to answer her questions, or stop and chat. Her mind was crowded with questions she would ask whatever poor, unfortunate souls got stuck with her.
There were two dragons. That was a surprise. One was green, the other bronze, and both looked large and healthy. The green did look slightly nervous though. Peradan made a mental note not to get too close to that one, unless that worrying yellow tint to the green's eyes vanished. Peradan didn't exactly know what the different colors meant, but yellow seemed slightly ominous.
Next Peradan took in the two riders. If forced to admit it out loud, she would have agreed that she looked at S'kor for a longer time, and that there may or may not have been a small, approving smile on her face. He was short, yes... But Peradan could work with short. He looked quite handsome. Optheli looked friendly, but having no particular desire for other women, Peradan couldn't have commented on her relative attractiveness. But it was time to drag her mind out from that direction. Today was about dragons, not about flirtations. Work always had to come first.
Giving both riders a broad grin, Peradan waved. She made sure to include the dragons in her broad gesture. "I'm Peradan. I guess I'm the first one here?"

Cetalese, as usual, was up early and made her way immediately to the Candidate bathing chamber before the others awoke. It was her usual morning ritual-- get clothes, bathe, change, get breakfast, get back before chores were assigned-- but today would be a little different and that gave her added speed to her movements. She had even risen a bit earlier for the occasion, excitement waking her earlier than she wanted and leaving her laying in bed, mind working but eyes closed, for probably half a candlemark. This morning would be her first Candidate lesson, and the first chance to try her new pants. She'd been sticking to skirts for the last few days, but a lesson meant she might need mobility. Bathed, dried and dressed, Cetalese headed down to the dining hall. Riders were expected to be up this early, but Ceta knew from experience that it was very rare to find more than a dozen in the dining hall when the sun had only come up half a candlemark before. Sure enough, there were less than a dozen when she entered and made herself up a plate. She had to have energy today.
Cetalese wasn't one to forget herself, so she was mindful of the time as she ate and didn't take overlong. Her food done, she took advantage of a little additional time and jogged down to the kitchens to check on the egg pots. With a smile, she opened and checked first hers and then Eliza's. Not much longer now, she thought. Of course, she didn't actually know, since this was her first experience with firelizard eggs, but the shell was hot and unbelievably hard. It couldn't be much longer. Ceta turned both pots with a sure movement, so the other side could warm. They would be expected at the lesson soon. However, as she rose to her feet she realized that Eliza hadn't been up and, if she stayed true to her nature, might very well oversleep, forget about not making it to breakfast. Before she left the kitchen, Cetalese took two meatrolls from a tray being prepared for the dining hall, gave a smile of greeting and thanks to the Headwoman who was busy directing drudges, and left with her feet making tracks for the Candidate Barracks.
Sure enough, when she arrived Eliza was still abed, although Cetalese saw other girls had risen and were bathing or already gone to the lesson or breakfast.
"Eliza. Hey." She carefully stacked the meatrolls in one hand and with the back of her free hand-- so as to not get crumbs in Eliza's bed-- she shook her friend slightly. "Eliza. Eliza. Wake up."

Eliza had gone to bed a bit later then she intended but that wasn't anything unusual - what was unusual was the slight shaking that woke her up. Cracking an eye open she eyed the blurry figure for a few moments before blinking to bring it into focus. Cetalese..why on Pern was Ceta...oh crap the lesson!
Jumping out of bed she grabbed her scattered clothes from the day before and threw them on - they were going to be oiling dragons there didn't seem to be much point in getting another set of clothes all mucky "I'm late aren't I" She fretted as she pulled a shirt over her head "How late am I? Am I really late? Oh! and you brought breakfast too!" She remarked noting the meat rolls in her friends hands before hurrying for the door "Come on! We have to hurry!" She added plucking one of the rolls out of Ceta's hand and shoving half of it into her mouth as she hurried her friend out of the barracks and down the path.

Cetalese watched her friend's speed in dressing silently, and likewise didn't have time to say much as one of the meatrolls was snatched from her hand, although for one she had the incentive. Knowing her friend was going to work herself into a fit, Ceta slowed her steps once they were outside and Eliza's mouth was too full of meatroll to interrupt her.
"Eliza. I woke you up early. We aren't going to be late. In fact," Cetalese gestured at the two dragons hunkered down in the weyrbowl and the one much smaller person standing with them. She was still holding Eliza's second meatroll, but she wouldn't pass it to her friend until she was sure Eliza wouldn't try to choke them both down at once. "It looks as if we'll be two of the first to arrive. Relax."
Without a word, she took her hair tie from her pocket and offered it to Eliza. The girl hadn't had the time to brush her hair in her self-induced panic, and Ceta hadn't the time to find a brush before Eliza was rushing her out the door, but she could at least offer Eliza a tie to keep the messy locks out of her face. Ceta always kept a spare, and the little pockets in the pants were the perfect places to hold them. First impressions on her new pants were favorable.
As they approached the dragons, Cetalese could see she'd been correct, because she recognized the face of the girl standing with them. Still, she hadn't been expecting two dragons or, if she acknowledge it, their sizes. Even the Green seemed huge, and the Bronze looked as if he could fit a good five Candidates on his back. Despite living at the weyr for a few sevendays now and having seen dragons come and go, Cetalese had only been close to the one Blue who had Searched her. That gave her some preparation for the Green-- but not for the Bronze. Although her face really didn't alter much from its usual calm, she could feel herself staring and was sure her mouth was hanging open, rather than her lips being slightly parted the way they were. She just couldn't seem to help herself.

Chewing furiously so that she could open her mouth and hurry her friend along - why Ceta had decided to start lagging now when they were actually going to do something sort of interesting she simply couldn't fathom...but then her friend started to speak again and Eliza paused...Ceta had woke her up early, of course she had..she ought to have known that the other girl was always thinking ahead like that. Swallowing the bit of meatroll she had in her mouth she accepted the hair tie with a bit of a sheepish grin and paused to pull her hair back into some semblance of order.
"Smart" She told her friend brightly once she had finished and caught up with her again "Now we won't get fussed at for being late" she concluded as she looked at the two dragons..a bronze and a green, nice. Eliza liked bronzes..who didn't? They were beautiful creatures but her eyes were more for the green after all she'd never be able to ride a bronze..but a green..that was a possibility someday. Glanceing at her friend she noted the way she was staring at the bronze "I think he's one of the bigger bronzes if I remember right" She whispered to her friend. Eliza tried hard to recall as many of the dragons and thier riders as she could - at least by name..but there were allot of them and it was sometimes hard to do..but she was pretty sure the Bronze before her was one of the larger of his color though his and his riders name escaped her at the moment.

Zeirvon yawned and shifted in his bunk. Eventually he opened his eyes and sighed; another day, another lesson. At least this morning he was going to be outside though, the candidatemaster had decided that as a clutch was upcoming some of them ought to get a bit closer to some dragons. Wasn't the first time he'd been through this routine, and probably wouldn't be the last; there were a lot of candidates around the place. Sighing again the lithe young man rolled out of bed and padded off to to the male candidate's bathing room where he washed, shaved, and tied his long black hair back into a smooth plait.
With this done, he dressed in loose linen britches and a sleeveless linen tunic before making for the dininghall to discover breakfast. Porridge and fruit seemed like the order of the day, accompanied of course by a huge mug of klah. He probably should have, no hw knew he should have gone to bed earlier but he never did learn. Struggling to keep himself from dropping off to sleep again he made his way slowly through his food (and a second mug of klah) before turning in his crockery at the hatch and making for the appointed meeting place.
He recognised the pair of riders of course, he'd stood for the same clutch that they'd Impressed in and the good fortune of the two traders had burned their names indelibly into his mind. Optheli. S'kor. Free wanders living the trader's life that had been taken away from him, living it right up until they moment they'd taken away dragons he - a man who'd have that perfect wanderer's life taken away from him - could have bonded to... Hu, well he guessed he couldn't have Impressed the bronze in actual fact, but it was still hard not to feel a bit bitter. "Good morning riders," he drawled as he drew near, bowing ever so slightly, "I hope you and your dragons are well today?" It wasn't insincere, he didn't wish either of them any harm; he just wished he could be standing where they were, that was all.

S’kor returned the wave, then waited while Optheli settled her green. He greeted her properly with a smile and hug when she came over. “Couldn’t be a better morning. It’ll be nice and cool for quite some time. I’m always busy. If its not his bath time its oiling, or feeding.” It wasn’t as tedious as he made it sound. The bronze didn’t eat very often, and he did his best to help during bath time. S’kor knew the time spent oiling was time spent bonding with his dragon, and he never rushed that. He gave a hearty laugh. “We’ll see how fast they can get him oiled. At least if they Impress they’ll be able to start small. Dynith has a good rider in you, she worries way too much.”
Movement in the rays of the sun, cause the ex-trader’s sharp eyes. “Looks like the candidates are going to start showing up.” He thought they were darn lucky to be able to get up this late. Of course, they aren’t expected to move with a caravan either, S’kor reminded himself. At least they were up. He nodded pleasantly as the first one, a woman, arrived. It didn’t take long before a couple more girls showed, trailed in by the first male candidate.
“Morning. They do quite well. Yourself?” It was simple and polite, but not overly friendly. The smile for his sister had mostly vanished. S’kor decided to wait just a bit longer to see if anymore showed up.
That is good. He was pleased his plan had worked. There will be plenty candidates to oil you too Dynith. Scarath went to greet the candidates as only proper for ones who would be oiling him. As he inhaled he caught the scents of items brought from the kitchen. His eyes whirled faster with interested and he lifted his head; a large blue-green eye fixed first on one candidate then the other. They had brought food! A soft rumble escaped him.
Optheli gave her brother a quick hug then shaded her eyes. She gave a quick, cheerful laugh, “You say that just to tease him. Don’t mind him Scarath.” Her brother gave a shrug that he couldn’t deny she was right. “Just like we did? Boy, were we green back then.” She flashed another smile. “Oh I know, she hardly leaves my side. But then again I know if I ever need her she won’t be far away.”
“Good morning!” A bright grin greeted the first to arrive. “Yup, first one but here come some others now. Looking forward to this?” She was excited when other candidates started showing up. Optheli waved the pair of girls toward them, as S’kor seemed to have engaged the familiar lad. “C’mon on up. I’m Optheli, rider of green Dynith. That’s S’kor and bronze Scarath over there. ” She waited for the candidate’s names.
Mine, will have to supervise them. She was reassured slightly by Scarath’s reassurance until the candidates started arriving. There wasn’t enough, there just wasn’t! Dynith hunkered closer to the ground. Maybe they wouldn't notice her. She blinked in surprise. Food? What was with the bronze and food? Give her a good wherry any day.

Melina was tired, much like the other Candidates, but for a very different reason. Her craft required her to be up at nights, gazing at the skies, and she normally slept during the day. She had been using her small telescope all night, soaking up this view that was so different from the one at home in Ruatha. She had made pages upon pages of notes in her exacting, tiny script. They'd look rather like gibberish to most people, but to her, they were precise notes of distance, location, time, and calculations to figure out relative speed and size of the objects she had been viewing. She had just finished a rather difficult series of calculations when she realized with a start what time it was - weren't they supposed to be oiling dragons this morning? Her shoulder length brown hair was tied half back, the upper section being in a pony tail and the rest of it loose. As she hurried out into the sunlight, an unusual circumstance for her, her hair glinted gold as it shifted and caught the early morning sun's rays.
Her eyes were somewhat red - she was normally asleep by now, and she supposed it would be rather obvious that she had been up all night. So accustomed to ways in the Star Hall, it hadn't quite occurred to her that people here might find her schedule odd, or assume other reasons for it. She hurried out to where she could see the two hulks of the dragons, wondering if she was the last to arrive. She hadn't even gotten food, her eating schedule being backwards by a fault as well. First thing in the morning was bed time for her, and it was bad to eat before bed. As she drew closer to the group, most of the attention seemed to be on the bronze, and the green seemed worried about something. She headed over to the green, bypassing much of the crowd and offering a smile at the green's rider. Hi, I'm Melina she offered, eyes flicking between rider and dragon and waiting for permission to approach and shower the green with some affection. This was her first full day in the weyr, and she felt rather out of place, not knowing anyone yet, though she recognized Ceta from having rescued her from her top bunk the previous day.

Eliza nodded a polite hello to the riders and their dragons both as they were introduced and it didn't take much goading from Optheli to make Eliza urge Cetalese up closer along with her. "Eliza" She introduced herself to the dragon rider pairs but left Cetalese to introduce herself while she eyed the two dragons.
The green looked a bit..unsure about the whole thing - what with the way she was hunkering down like she was while the bronze on the other hand seemed more then just a little bit interested in a few of her fellow candidates.

Kytara carefully closed the book in front of her and glanced around the room. It was still early, but not as much as she had first thought. She had gotten sucked into her writing and taken longer than she had meant to. Mentally chastising herself she stood, grateful that she had woke so early and already bathed and dressed. She quickly made her way down to the kitchens and poured herself a mug of klah. "Shouldn't you be eating something as well? I know you missed dinner last night, and lunch as well. The last thing you need is to faint while helping out today." She jumped and turned to face the speaker, her eyes lighting up as she saw Navarre. He was just starting to pull back his hair and tie it off, but his blue eyes were watching her intently, waiting for her to answer. "But..." "But nothing. Eat. Being late might not make the best impression, but at least it will be because you're taking care of yourself." His tone was final and commanding. He reached out and grabbed a roll from a nearby plate, shoving it into her hands. It had been like this since he had been searched from the hold. Always hovering to make sure she was safe and well cared for. Secretly she was grateful. "What about you?" "I ate while I was waiting for you. I was just about to come up and get you when I saw you standing here."
As she finished her klah she set the mug down and took a small bite of her roll and motioned for him to lead the way down to where they were supposed to meeting. From a distance they could clearly see the bronze and green, along with the small crowd that had gathered. "Looks like we aren't too late." Kytara simply nodded and started to pick up the pace. As they joined the group she moved closer to her brother, almost hiding. She recognized Optheli and smiled a bit, waving to her. "The green is Dynith, her rider is Optheli. There." She pointed the young woman out to her brother. "The bronze? "I'm not sure."
Navarre didn't hesitate long before moving closer to the greenrider. His sister seemed more at ease around her, and while he would have preferred to admire the bronze up close, he knew his place was with Kytara, at least until she relaxed a bit more. "Morning!" His tone was warm and friendly, but perhaps a bit to chipper for some of those present, a stark contrast to Kytara's soft and almost unheard greeting. "Good morning."

It looked like the Candidates were starting to trail in quickly. Peradan was excited, yet oddly disappointed. She had hoped the lesson would be slightly smaller. Like one on one with the bronzerider. Oh Faranth, where was her mind? Not on the lesson, apparently.
She still offered the newcomers a friendly smile and nodded her head slightly, though Peradan's eyes remained riveted on the dragons and their riders. Just watching the way the sun hit their hides, the way the great beasts moved to settle themselves was riveting. It was like the conversation she had had in the Weyrbowl when she had first come to the Weyr. There was nothing to be done but to admire the dragons until her eyes could take in no more.
Then the bronze lifted his head. It looked as though he was hungry and sniffing the air. What? Oh, she still had half a meatroll in her hand. But it was such a small, pitiful thing. Surely he couldn't want it? The rumble made her jump slightly, almost losing her food. She didn't want to eat it anymore anyway. This was too exciting.
When Optheli spoke, Peradan moved forward. "I'm Peradan. Does the bronze want my meatroll? He looks interested in it. " She blinked, looking up at the massive dragon. "I am excited, yes. But every time I see a dragon up close, they seem to get bigger. Do they ever lose that effect?" Stepping back, Peradan let the others join them, her eyes still darting from meatroll to bronze.

Zerivon nodded to the other candidates as they arrived in ones and twos; he knew some of them better than others of course but had at least known who everyone was save for the girl who introduced herself as Melina. How many more people were they waiting on, he wondered? Frankly he just wanted to get on with the lesson/exercise. As Navarre and Kytara arrived, Zerivon arched a skeptical eyebrow at the latter candidate. Wispy little girl she was, it seemed that she'd taken not Impressing at the last clutch as hard as he had although in a different way. Still, not his problem.
His attention was soon pulled away from the girl by Peradan however, who seemed very keen indeed to put herself forward. Still, he couldn't blame her, he's been just about that excited first time around. This time... well, it was just hard to get too thrilled about oiling somebody else's dragon when you were so painfully aware that you might never get your own. Still, he had to admit that the feeling of smooth dragon hide under your hands was nice. Maybe he'd just enjoy the sensation and a bit of time that wasn't being spent either inside, engaged in dirty chores, or both at once. So long as he didn't let himself get his hopes up too much it would be alright.

Cetalese gave the riders a small smile in greeting as they introduced themselves and their dragons, but she was distracted by the arrival of several other Candidates. Spare meatroll still in hand, she turned her head to see who was coming before looking back at the riders attentively. The lesson would start soon then, wouldn't it? Cetalese debated which dragon she would get placed with. Girls didn't ride Bronzes, period, but they were able to ride Silvers sometimes, and those dragons were nearly as big.
Would she-- Cetalese mentally shook the thought from her mind. It figured Eliza would get her thinking foolishly. There were more important things to think about than what dragon color she would get if she Impressed, and mostly she was able to focus on those other things. Girls in Trine, Eliza had told her, could ride most any color, with the exceptions of Bronze and Brown. Or that was how she understood it, anyway. It never hurt to be prepared, though, and any dragon was going to get big, as was clear from the Green. This green seemed much more timid than Viridith, the Green she'd had the opportunity to witness in flight and hear about from her rider, K'ro. Optheli seemed not to notice, or if she did she was taking her dragon's cowering in stride. Yes, Cetalese was pretty sure she was cowering. Without noticing she did it, Cetalese tilted her head while observing the Green, then flicked her eyes to the Bronze. There was certainly a difference in personality there.

Gauden's short time at the Weyr wasn't enough to break habits ingrained from years of study. He awoke at the early hour reserved for the Beastcraft, bathed, and dressed, before finding his way to some breakfast-- and only getting lost once. He ate with efficiency, noting the other people who entered the dining hall but not approaching them, even when he recognized faces. When he was finished he headed back to the Barracks only to find the inhabitants sleeping still or already gone. The ones sleeping were clearly going to miss the lesson or be late. Should he wake them? No. They probably wouldn't appreciate that if they had decided to sleep in. That just left him getting himself there on time.
Where are we supposed to go for the lesson?
He saw a body vanish down the hall and followed it at a brisk walk. He was gaining ground on the Candidate when the other boy reached the door to the weyrbowl and when Gauden reached it he didn't need anyone to follow any more. The two dragons sitting in the Weyrbowl were obvious to any man with eyes in his head. Gauden made his own way over to them, stepping up behind one of the other male Candidates who had made it. Actually, the group looked fairly small for the mass of beds in the Candidate Barracks, Gauden thought, and he knew there must be some Candidates who were missing the lesson.
That will be their trouble when and if they get a dragon. They'll have to learn what to do then instead of now. There was really no excuse for being so lazy as to do something stupid.
