Arrival
The sun rose up rosily in the cold, March morning. The ground was wet from the midnight shower and Konohagakure was just waking up. It was a peaceful scene. One such early bird, the manager of the orphanage, was just going through her own early morning rituals. Having cleaned and dressed herself up, the imposing yet kind woman bustled busily through the halls, her brown hair held up in a bun that bounced with each step. After checking in briefly with the other orphanage workers to make sure they were on track, the manager then headed over to the front door to pick up the newspaper and milk.
Indeed, the brown-haired woman did find the newspaper and milk she was looking for, but also something else, a shivering bundle that seemed to be making strange noises. Somehow, in the short interval between the daily deliveries arriving and the woman picking them up, someone had deposited this animate bundle. Not knowing what this bundle could be, but already guessing with pity, the woman cautiously picked up the cocoon of blankets and shifted them a bit so as to see what was inside. Her suspicious face melted, replaced by a gentler, pitying expression, as the woman clucked sympathetically at the bundle while heading back in, the milk and paper still on the steps. "Oh, poor, poor baby," the woman whispered softly at the bundle of blankets, which she could see now held a young baby girl, no more than a month or so old, "poor, poor, poor." She continued to whisper at the baby until she came upon the orphanage's nursery. There, she handed the new addition to the nursery to the woman who was attending to the other babies in the room. Then, she bustled back into the hallway to pick up the newspaper and milk and then go along with the other necessary duties.
Meanwhile, the orphanage worker in charge of the nursery, which held all of the babies and younger toddlers of the orphanage set to work changing the baby from her cold blanket to a warmer set of clothes. Meanwhile, the child continued to whimper. Rather than crying, it seemed as if this white-haired girl preferred the softer whimpering, despite her shivering with a coldness that would have made any other baby cried. As her blanket was unwrapped, the baby curled up and whimpered even louder, finally opening her eyes, which had been closed up until then. Underneath her wispy, white hair were a pair of bright, light blue eyes. Despite the coloration of her eyes and hair, however, the baby looked distinctly East Asian. "So, what should we name you, little one?" the nursery worker cooed as she unwrapped the last layer of the blanket. Underneath the blanket, the baby wore nothing. Well, nothing except for a small piece of paper with a note on it. Picking up the note, the woman read it:
Setsuna 4/1 After reading the note, the lady pinched her new charge's cheeks a little and asked rhetorically, "Ah, so your name is Setsuna? And I'm guessing this date here is your birthday? Well, then, I think we'll call your Setsuna Watanuki. Watanuki for your birthday of course." After the naming, the lady then began dressing Setsuna up in her new clothes. Gradually, as she was dressed properly, the girl's whimpering died down and she fell quietly asleep.

Yes!
"Setsuna! Setsuna! Your parents loved you as much as your name!" "Yeah! They loved you less than .00000001 percent! Ha!" "Nyah! Nyah! You were abandoned! Nyah! Nyah!"
A three year old Setsuna crouched in a corner, huddled to protect herself from the insults of the other orphans surrounding her, her white hair the only part of her face that could be seen. Of course, being children, they didn't only jeer. They also prodded with sticks and kicked dirt on the girl. Of course, nothing serious--none of them wanted to seriously harm the girl physically and then be punished for doing so. The group of taunters were a mixed group of boys and girls, most of who were older than her, and all of them were in the orphanage because their parents had died in battle as shinobi. Of course, the fact that their parents died with honor didn't make them feel any better, so to make up for the loss they felt, they teased Setsuna, who was in a supposedly worse position than they were because her parents had abandoned her. Throughout the teasing and jeering and poking, Setsuna remained completely silent and still. Just as how she whimpered rather than cried as a baby, Setsuna did not make a sound as she endured the torture. Finally, the kids grew tired of the unresponsive girl and one by one they wandered away to go do something else.
Finally, Setsuna was left by herself and she looked up shyly from her arms. Her pale blue eyes, partially covered by the long bangs of her white hair, were wet with the silent tears she had wept while being teased. Even as a three year old, Setsuna didn't like showing others her pain. She hated seeing the faces on the caretakers if they saw her crying. As she looked up dully, glad of the reprieve, the girl heard steady footsteps, heavier than the footsteps of kids. Quickly, Setsuna used her old, hand-me-down shirt to wipe what tears she could from her eyes; although, the redness would be a harder problem to deal with. Just as the creator of the footsteps appeared, the girl stopped rubbing at her eyes and quickly stood up. However, she was too late. "Ah, Setsuna, is that you?" the woman asked as she stopped, a load of laundry in her hands. She was a caretaker, specifically the nursery worker that had named Setsuna. From the day Setsuna appeared, this twenty-something year old woman with black hair and light hazel eyes had taken care of the now three year old girl.
From behind the woman peeked out a boy, about seven years old with the same hair and eyes as the woman, that Setsuna did not recognize. "Aki nee-san," the boy asked the woman, "is this Setsuna?". Apparently, he had already heard about the often-teased girl from some of the other orphans. Aki twisted a bit to look at the boy. The movement allowed Setsuna a clearer view of the seven year old and to see that he was also holding a basket of laundry; albeit, a much smaller basket than Aki the caretaker was holding. "Why, yes, this is Setsuna. Why do you ask Haru?" Aki asked. "You mean the Setsuna that was abandoned?" Haru asked his older sister bluntly. "Haru!" was the short response the caretaker gave her little brother she then turned quickly back to Setsuna, kneeling down so she was eye-level with the girl "Aha, it's alright, Setsuna, don't mind what my little brother just said. Here, why don't you come and help me with the laundry?". It was common knowledge among the workers at the orphanage that some of the orphans whose parents were dead tended to tease and trick the few orphans who were abandoned. There were only about three such orphans in the orphanage at the time and Setsuna, as the youngest and most passive, tended to be the one that was teased most.
Despite the worry Aki expressed, Setsuna had not seemed to react to what Haru had said. She simply remained stone-still. That is, until the nursery worker had expressed worry at her. Disliking the worry etched on Aki's face, Setsuna forced a smile on and said, in the best vocabulary she had at the time, "Yes!". Aki smiled at the response, fully believing that Setsuna had just let everything go about her being abandoned. Even without any training, cute little children like Setsuna had the little charm about them that made everything they say seem like the truth and Setsuna was such a good kid, one of the few who never made trouble.
However, Setsuna had not really forgotten. She understood, remembered, and even took as the truth what the other orphans teased about her. Her three year old mind couldn't find any counterarguments to what the other kids said--actually, Setsuna didn't even know what a counterargument was. Just as she hated seeing others in pain because of her despite her young age, the girl was also quite the realist despite her young age. Without anything against the idea that she was abandoned because she was unloved, the girl accepted it meekly as fact. It hurt her a lot but she continued to accept it and sought no help to make the supposed fact hurt less because she didn't want to burden others and make them feel bad.
Suddenly, a voice intruded the simple thoughts of the young child. "Um, you know, I'm sorry about before," the boy, Haru, apologized sincerely, but then ruined it by curiously asking, "but tell me, were you really abandoned because your parents hated you?". Setsuna couldn't stop and mope as she had done before. Not with someone who would be hurt by her actions so close to her. Therefore, once more, Setsuna stretched out her fake smile and replied with a cheerful, "Yes!".

Smile
"Hey! It's Setsuna! The unloved one!" a boy jeered. He was younger than her and more childish. Without a break in her step, Setsuna smiled and replied with what could only be seen as honesty, "Thank you!" then she stopped in her tracks and then crunched up a bit as if fearing a blow and continued, "That really hurt, you know?". The boy blinked in confusion, not knowing what to make of the sudden yet completely convincing change in emotions.
Meanwhile, Setsuna straightened back up and wore a smile on her face as usual once more, looking as if absolutely nothing had happened. She was eight right now and for as long as she could remember she had been smiling constantly and going through sudden and random switches in expression. Of course, before even that the girl had gotten the hang of lying flawlessly. Actually, just recently she was had begun taking her lying to the next level, going so far as to tell the truth when she looks like she's lying. Of course, at times, for variety, she'd really be telling a lie when she looks like she's lying.
The seemingly rapid changes in Setsuna's emotions had stopped insults from being thrown at her. As a plus, it also stopped the caretakers from worrying about her. Of course, at first, they couldn't help but be a bit worried, but now they didn't give a thought to Setsuna. It was so engraved in everyone's minds that what Setsuna showed could never be trusted to be what she really felt. As a result, whenever she looked like she was in trouble, people assumed she wasn't in trouble, and whenever she looked happy, people assumed she was happy. It was so much easier for them to think like that. Setsuna, herself, liked the relationship. That meant no one worried about her.
The girl continued to smile. Smiling had become her trademark and she was often seen with a smile on her face. Only when someone encountered her did the girl begin her rapid exchange of emotions. Of course, she didn't do that all the time. Sometimes she'd simply remain smiling.
"Setsuna," Aki asked as the seven year old she had named helped her with the laundry, "why do you do this?". As before, even though Setsuna was not directly in her care anymore, the woman tried to help the girl whenever she could. However, the problem was that Setsuna never gave away what she needed help in. "Hm?" Setsuna smiled and asked as she stood on tip-toe to reach the clothesline and pin a wet shirt onto it, "Do what?". This time around she decided to go with the all-smile route. Aki sighed and tried to explain, even though she had a hunch that Setsuna knew what she meant, "This. I mean, your… well, changing? And you always smile. You never show what you mean." Setsuna burst out laughing hysterically, clutching her stomach in an extremely convincing imitation, "I don't know." As soon as she said what she need to, the girl then straightened up quickly and hummed calmly as she hung up the next piece of laundry. Aki sighed once more. The last time she had asked, Setsuna had said the same thing. However, before that time, she had said it was because aliens had fiddled with her brain. Then, even before that, the girl had said that she did it because it was fun.
Setsuna smiled and hummed as she continued working. As time passed, her smile transitioned, showing a wide variety of unpredictable emotions. One moment it would look sad and then next would look maniacal. Aki would look at Setsuna every now and then and see her changes of expression, sighing whenever she did. In a way, the woman missed the Setsuna of only a couple years ago.
Setsuna, on the other hand, couldn't even remember what she was like a couple years ago. She couldn't even remember what had prompted her to take on such a changing act. It had just grown so much on her that she had accepted it as her natural behavior. Her answer to Aki just now was the truth and disliking the depressed sighs of the caretaker who cared so much for her, Setsuna put on a friendly smile and mention, "I told the truth that time, you know?". Aki simply looked at Setsuna and replied, "I wish I did," as a sad smile spread over her face.
Setsuna looked up but said nothing more. The girl felt a twinge of pain at the sad smile but said nothing. There was nothing she could think of to make the smile happy, that was reality that she had to and did accept. Even with a façade that was created to keep others from worrying about her and worked well in hiding her pain (as it did right now), Setsuna still managed to create worry. Well, at least it was only Aki that grew worried and it was because of the façade rather than what Setsuna was really feeling. In a world of strangers, however, a smile would dissipate any worries anyone had about her and her unpredictable nature would keep others gazing too closely at her behavior to see whether or not she was hurt. That was reality.
However, of course, Setsuna didn't think all of that. No, she wasn't really thinking much at all, just hanging up clothes and planning her next series of faces. The girl had forgotten why she acted as she did. She just knew that it would be best for others if she did so. All she had to do was smile and make sure everyone was a stranger, then everything would be fine. A smile was Setsuna's protection for others, one she would maintain to the best of her abilities. Even as a mere seven year old, the girl thought in such a way.

Jinchuuriki
Several adults, men and women alike, sat around a large circular table in a semi-dark room lit only by a couple candles around the edges. With no windows and no clock, it was impossible to tell what time it was in the dark room. There was a communal murmur as people talked little above a whisper about what was definitely an important matter. The lack of any guards in the room despite the obvious importance of the adults testified to the secrecy of the window-less meeting room.
"Setsuna Watanuki?" "Yes, she attends the academy and is about to turn eleven in a couple months." "I doubt she's a good choice. I say no." "Before we do anything concrete, I say we should look at her more deeply." "Aye, I say that too, we've been here for hours on end, now. We've already found Houkou's host, it's about time we find the Kyuubi's-" "The Kyuubi is not like the Gobi. It is much more powerful and I hope you remember who it was that lost control first." "Really, wasn't that the fault of the host rather than the demon?" "It's possible that the demon could be at fault as well." "Personally, I think anyone who saw their brother die ri-" "Please, let's get back on topic? Now, why is this Setsuna not a good choice?" "I've met her before, when I was checking up on the academy, the girl is just too unstable." "Unstable? She's shown exceptional talent in a variety of lessons. She's not top of the class, but she is definitely a steady worker." "No, I must agree she's too unstable. Her behavior changes far too often. One of the teachers even expressed to me a worry that she might be a bit crazy. She also can't be trusted. She lies as easily as she tells the truth." "Not to mention, she's only ten." "Aye, and I don't think she thinks too fondly of the village. Even if she wasn't unstable, this report mentions that she was often teased and states it as a reason for her sudden changes in behavior. Can we really trust someone who likely has anger towards this village to hold something that can destroy this village?". "I'd also like to add in that if she cracked because of such a thing as bullying, her will wouldn't be strong enough." "Oh, if only we had another one like the Princess? This decision would be so much easier." "We don't have another like Aqua, so stop whining. Besides, what proof is there that this girl has cracked?". "Let's see, how about her abnormal behavior?" "She does just fine in school." "Many of the craziest rogues were brilliant shinobi." "Well, who else do you suggest?". "This Hyuuga student seems a good choice. Intelligent." "Intelligence won't do. At least not by itself. We need someone with a strong will." "Well, how about Aiko Shirogane?" "I'd prefer a boy to be the host. You know, just to balance things out." "Gender does not matter in a situation like this!". "Sorry…." "Back to the topic, I don't think Shirogane has a strong enough will. Impressive, but not an outstanding quality. It says here in this report that she ran off… wait." "What? What is it?". "Yes, tell us." "Oh, let me see the report." "Please, give me a bit. It says here that in a race to test teamwork, Aiko Shirognae gave up after she and another teammate were injured. In the report with the details of this race, the most outstanding team was the one with Setsuna Watanuki in it. They didn't win, but they came in third." "So, what's so special about that?" "Watanuki had a broken collarbone and shoulder from falling into a pit trap-" "I have to agree, what's so special about that? Students often get injured in exercises such as this." "Yes, but Watanuki was injured as she tried to save her teammate. He had been about to fall into the trap himself when the girl recognized the trick and pulled him out of the way. In the end, she lost her own balance and fell on her shoulder. Despite the injury, though, she continued on and managed to climb up out of the hole. Then, a bit later, another teammate sprained an ankle on a tree branch. By then, the only uninjured teammate was complaining about being too tired to carry anyone and asking if they could just quit then. Setsuna was reportedly the one who refused and took on the burden of carrying the injured teammate herself, on her uninjured shoulder of course. She crossed over the finish line half-carrying an injured teammate despite her shoulder and collar bone; although the hospital said it was dangerous that she didn't stop when she did." "I think I can see where you're going with this. Her reason?" "Erm…. Well, I think she might be lying here, but she said that her reason was so that she could sit down and sing." "What?" "Excuse me?" "That's what it says." "I still say that this girl is too unstable to be the host." "However, if you think about it, she must really have cared for her teammates to do what she did." "True, she must also have a very strong spirit." "Yes, but those were just two teammates, what about the entire village?". "I think it would be the same. The girl apparently has no friends. The two teammates were practically strangers to her, as pretty much everyone is. That much dedication to strangers…. It's impressive." "How do we know the girl didn't do it just to win? We can't deny that her will is strong, not with what we know now, but are her heart and mind in the right place?". "There were no prizes and reports here say that she randomly slacks off in class… just as many times as she works maniacally." "Strong spirit, soul, whatever, I still don't feel comfortable trusting such an unstable girl with the demon. What if she were to suddenly get angry and lose control? Perhaps that show of gallantry was only one of her random mood spurts." "Have you ever felt the pain of a broken shoulder and collarbone?". "Of course! Who do you think I am?!". "Then how can you say that the decision to continue, while carrying a burden no less, was just a random mood spurt. Especially considering that this girl has no outstanding records in strength or endurance." "She's still only ten." "Even more reason to be amazed at the perseverance she showed! Besides, was not the last Kyuubi host just a mere child when she received her demon?". "Yes, but the last Kyuubi host came from Otogakure, we are a different village. Besides, remember what happened to her?". "No, no, I mean, yes, I remember what happened to her." "Pardon? Weren't you just against Watanuki taking on the demon a while ago?". "Yes, well, I changed my mind. She is far from the perfect host, but I think she just might be the best we have." "Thank you!". "No! Just no! Will we really entrust the strongest demon to a girl who doesn't even have family in the Leaf?!". "She knows of no family and was raised here since a little over a month after her supposed birthdate." "Still! How did we even get this far in discussing such a horrible candidate?!". "You know, I think I have to agree that she might be our best choice. Wait, look, calm down. As it was said before, Watanuki is not the perfect choice, but she is our best. She has already shown an extraordinarily strong spirit and I think should the need arise, she will be a lot more stable than we suspect her to be. Look at the reports, the girl befuddles everyone and at times causes irritation or worry, but never does she harm anyone and she always pulls back at just the right moment to prevent anything serious from happening. She lies often, but when it comes down to it, she only lies for those things that won't cause much damage." "You know, that kind of makes sense." "I still say no." "Same here." "I say we vote. Is everyone ready?"
A chorus of yes's rang out through the room and a vote was taken. The needed majority was reached. It had been decided. Setsuna Watanuki would become the new host for Kyuubi.
"We should perform the sealing on her birthday." "April 1st?". "A bit ironic, don't you think? That day was a day when children threw out their old clothes out in the belief that it took away the evil spirits that had accumulated on the clothes. Now we'll be using that day to seal a demon known for it malice into one such child? Well, it's just a tradition. I don't see why not." "Then, if no one disagrees, Setsuna Watanuki will become the Kyuubi's jinchuuriki on the day of her birth."

Sealing
"Watanuki! Come out now! The lesson is over!" the academy teacher called out for the ten (almost eleven now) year old girl. However, he received no reply. Shouting louder this time, he called once more, "Hey! Watanuki!". Around him, the rest of the class huddled around, trying to see if they could spot the girl from where they were standing. Then, Watanuki appeared. Slipping soundlessly out of a tree, the girl mumbled something incoherent as she sleepily rubbed her eyes. "Yes, Hikari-sensei? I'm here." Suddenly, her expression shifted, from sleepy to rebellious, "So, what do I need to do?". Instead of rubbing her eyes, the girl's hands were no crossed in front of her and her mouth was curved up into a smirk, yet another one of her traditional smiles. The teacher sighed, he was used to this kind of behavior. Of course, that didn't mean he understood it. Talking to the entire class, he reiterated, "Well, the stealth lesson is over. Once more, Watanuki couldn't be found so she won. Now, let's get in for some written work."
The class nodded as a whole, even Setsuna nodded as she returned to the normal girl act. It was usual for Setsuna to win the stealth exercises. She was obviously the best in the entire class at hiding despite her white hair and most people figured she would become an assassin when she reached genin. It only seemed natural. Although, Setsuna often didn't do the things that seemed natural for her. Of course, that wasn't the only thing she was good at. The teachers often praised her for her ingenuity at using weapons, only to find her suddenly digress the next time the class practiced with weapons. Likewise, at times Setsuna showed an extremely keen eye and at other times she would blunder into the most obvious traps. The girl was a mystery, and because she was a mystery, she was a stranger.
Finally, school ended and Setsuna was free to go wherever she chose to go until curfew, the orphanage that she still lived at had a curfew for the older kids. As with anything else, it was impossible to figure out when Setsuna would be home, the only concrete knowledge was that she would be home before the curfew. For this day in particular, Setsuna planned to go to the orphanage right after school. However, her plans were abruptly interrupted.
"Yes?" the girl asked cheerfully and politely as she settled on an unsettling smile. The question was directed at her teacher. "Watanuki," Hikari-sensei began, "I know it's your birthday and I'm sorry for putting this on you, but there is something that we need you to do." Here, the girl adopted a frightened look and began stuttering, "B-but I didn't do anything wr-wrong, sensei. Really, I didn't! A-and, aren't I too young for a mission? I mean, I'm still a student." The chuunin teacher couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt at the convincing display of fear Setsuna had put on, but he continued on, knowing that this was probably just another of her acts, "Setsuna, don't worry, you did nothing wrong. Actually, it's because you did a lot of right things that you've been entrusted with this." "R-right things?" Setsuna continued with the scared act, "What do you me-mean? I'm the worst in cl-class. Why… why would I be? Why me? Wh-who would entrust something t-to me?". The teacher simply shook his head. Once more his student was blatantly lying; although, the way the lie itself was executed sounded like the truth. If the teacher hadn't known what Setsuna was capable of, he would have believed her. However, he didn't fight. The sooner this was over with, the better. Putting his hand over his face, the teacher rubbed his temples a bit as he spoke carefully, "Setsuna, don't worry. Whatever you think of yourself, you were deemed worthy. The village needs you for… something. You won't really have to do anything yourself, just be there. You'll probably feel a bit different afterwards and maybe even look a bit different, but it shouldn't harm you. That was the reason why you were chosen, because you were considered the person who would best handle it." Here the teacher ended, his eyes closed for several seconds as he tried to see if he forgot anything. This was a tricky situation. He had to get Setsuna to agree without telling her anything, that was what the village elders had deemed most convenient. Setsuna, however, was sharp and she immediately picked up on the careful tone, the lack of details. the girl thought realistically, simply considering it a fact, Despite what she thought, Setsuna continued her shy act. She acted as if she didn't think that what the teacher had said was suspicious. The girl would go along with whatever the village wanted her to do. She had no other choice and it would cause others less trouble if she just went on as if she knew nothing. "A-alright," the girl replied quietly, "So, wh-where do I have to go?". The teacher mentally sighed in relief. He thought that his trick has worked, and he was glad for it even if he couldn't help but feel a bit guilty. He gave the girl concrete orders, "You're to go to the memorial. Once their, another group will put you to sleep. Don't worry," here the teacher stooped a bit to be on the same level as Setsuna's currently unmarked face, "they won't do anything bad to you. It's just that the process will be easier if you're asleep."
Setsuna nodded quietly, and after a gentle tap on her shoulder as the teacher stood back up, the girl turned and left timidly. At least, she seemed timid. As always, Setsuna's actions did not reflect what she felt. Well, no, they did. Part of the reason why her masks were so believable was because the girl managed to make herself partly believe that she was really feeling the way she acted. Slowly, the girl walked through the village, taking various shortcuts through some deserted alleys. The main streets were still bustling with activity and the sun was still about an hour or so away from just beginning to set. As she walked, her expression changed. First the girl was timid, then the next moment she pouted with reluctance. From there, it was a smooth transition to a girly skip and hum. The girl kept up this fluid exchange of emotions up until she reached the memorial. Here, she adopted an solemn expression, serious and hostile.
Walking towards the large stone slab with the names of the parents of many of the orphans she had known and was teased by, the girl paused for a bit and then shouted out angrily, "Alright! I know you're there! So hurry up and get on with it! Do whatever crazy experiment you want to do on me! Put me to sleep and whatnot. Geez, I already know you're going to do something I probably won't like, no need to hide it!". Suddenly, the girl's expression then changed into a happy, innocent one, not unlike the face of a child eager to do something for the first time. Standing up on tip-toe and waving a hand in the air, the girl cheerfully yelled, "I'm ready!". To add to the excited effect, Setsuna began bouncing slightly, her feathery hair flying up and then floating down in time with her body. Her eyes were bright and despite their cool color, they seemed hot, hot like a bright blue flame. "Are you Setsuna Watanuki?" a female voice suddenly sounded out from the shadows to the left of the girl, gentle and formal. With an over-elaborate twirl, Setsuna turned to the sound of the voice. No longer was her face eager, now it was solemn, but not an angry solemn like before; this time, it was a respectful solemn. "No, miss, I'm Tsuki" the girl replied as she gave a polite bow, a shy smile on her face as she lied flawlessly. When it was part of her act to look at the speaker, the girl tried her best to analyze the older woman's face. However, the shadows kept the girl from getting a clear view. The shadowed figure seemed to pause for a bit in confusion before continuing, "Are you sure? You look very much like the picture of Setsuna Watanuki." The voice was still calm and gentle. Confused, but not angry. "If I may be so rude, may I ask who you are?" Setsuna asked with another bow, not bothering to answer the stranger's question. The still unknown figure paused for a bit, probably to think things out, before giving what Setsuna could just decipher was a nod, "I am the hokage's assistant, Sindoue Misuki. N-" Before the hokage's aide could finish, though, Setsuna cut across rudely, having adopted a completely different personality. "Hmph, well, madame assistant hokage-sama," the girl interrupted, her voice dripping with irony and sarcasm. To complete the confusing change, the girl's body posture remained polite and erect. If her lips hadn't been moving, it would have been hard to believe that such a tone could come from someone who was standing as Setsuna was. To continue, "glad to know your name. Not like needed it of course. Now, hurry up and get on with this. I don't have all day, you know? You need Setsuna Watanuki, right? Well, here she is." A smirk was plastered on Setsuna's face throughout the entire time she talked. She added completely randomly, "By the way, it's not my birthday." Setsuna couldn't see the specific reaction the assistant's face had at the sudden change in tone and information. However, the girl could see that there was some sort of reaction. That was to be expected. Choosing not to change her personality again yet, the girl gave Misuki the pause needed to speak. It was quite a long pause, actually. Obviously, this kind of rudeness from an academy student was completely unexpected, as it should be. However, this was Setsuna, as the girl had just announced after saying that she was someone else. The unexpected should be expected and the expected should be expected to become the unexpected. After a short cough to clear her throat, the hokage's assistant began once more, "Well, Watanuki-chan," here Setsuna gave a rude snort, "I don't know about your birthday, but I want to ask you, are you willing to go along with this?" a pause where Setsuna was given the chance to speak up. The girl didn't. Misuki continued, "I cannot tell you what will be done to you. All I can say is that it won't harm you directly, but it still has the potential to make your life much more difficult than it already is. Are you willing to make this sacrifice? If any part of you isn't willing. Please tell me now." The voice was still calm and patient, but also serious now. The sense of formality had always been there, now it had simply taken a slight leaning towards the sense of formality one would expect at a briefing before a serious mission. Setsuna was no longer smiling. It was the first time she had stopped smiling since the beginning of this conversation. This change would likely be considered another mood change. Of course, others might think that this was Setsuna's actual personality. The answer? The girl didn't know herself. Everything had become an act to her. "Do I have a choice?" the girl asked with a grim face before smiling slyly like a fox planning some kind of unpleasant trap, "I have a choice? No part of me is unwilling. I see no reason not to go on. I'm simply a girl who is abandoned and loved as much her name, less than even .00000001 percent. Yes, I'm completely willing. Do as you please to me. Besides, I'll be the only one that's hurt, right?". The girl's posture remained the same as before: back straight, feet together, and hands politely clasped in the front. Her face still in shadows, Misuki remained quiet for a long minute. Minute movements of her head told Setsuna that the woman's face was moving in thought. Finally, she spoke, "Very well" and stepped out of the shadows just as several more masked ninjas appear, enough to ring the entire memorial clearing. By now, the sun had begun setting in earnest. The shadows were long. Setsuna thought as she noted the masks while Misuki walked slowly up to her, . Here, Setsuna could say no more. Misuki had just shot the girl full with some sort of tranquilizer and instantly the academy student blacked out.
"I'm sorry," Misuki whispered apologetically as she caught the unconscious Setsuna. Meanwhile, the rest of the ANBU forces began making the necessary preparations for the sealing of the Kyuubi. From behind the mask of an ANBU standing besides the woman, a gruff voice commented, "I still say she's too unstable and that sudden rudeness she displayed just now proves my point."

Graduation
Setsuna looked in the bathroom mirror. Her entire head and the top of her shirt, hoodie, and scarf were completely soaked with water while random drops of water appeared on the other parts of her outfit from the water dripping off of her hair. Without really thinking, the girl traced the three whisker-like markings she had on each side of her face. While she was sleeping underneath a table, when she should have been helping her class set up for the big event later in the day, Setsuna had another dream. It was always something similar. At least, that's what the girl felt like they were. She could never remember what it was that she dreamed about. All the girl knew was that she was scared, immensely scared of something. The best way she could describe that something was that it was part of herself, but no, that didn't make any sense. Even more confusing, was that a tiny part of her seemed to even agree with what she was scared with. Her confusion simply heightened her fear and her fear had caused her to completely wet the upper part of her body. Setsuna thought as she heard an indistinct shout that could have been her name. The girl quickly adjusted her entire body, down to the most minute detail,
A twelve year old with her brilliantly purple hair bunched up into a high pony tail skid to a halt upon entering the bathroom. "W-Watanuki-chan?" the girl asked, stuttering half because she was out of breath and half because of the absurd scene that she had encountered. Here was Setsuna, in the girl's bathroom at school, lying on top of the counter with her head hanging down in one of the sinks. Out of the sink's faucet, a steady stream of water was running down Setsuna's pale white hair. "Hm?" Setsuna asked as if what she was doing wasn't strange at all, a friendly smile on her face. The expression would have been completely normal if she hadn't been in the pose she was in. "What are you doing like… well, like this?" the girl asked as she tilted her head over to the side, causing her hair to cascade over her shoulder like a violet waterfall. Setsuna had begun humming and only paused to reply, "Why, Shirogetsu-chan, I'm being a fish." The girl was now even more confused and the frown she wore showed it, "Erm, pardon?". Now Setsuna's face contorted in shock as she quickly twisted over so that she was now lying on her belly with her head out of the sink. The resulting movement of her airy hair caused water to splash everywhere and even a bit onto the girl who was apparently "Shirogetsu-chan" according to Setsuna. The wild sprays of water caused the girl to cringe a bit but she stayed where she was. "What do you mean, Shirogetsu-chan? You don't know what 'I'm being a fish' means? But it's so common," Setsuna asked in shock, "It's another way to say that I'm swimming." The purple-haired girl simply stared in confusion before understanding that Setsuna was being, well, Setsuna again. "U-um, first of all, I'm not Shirogetsu, I'm Shirogane," the girl replied, "and second of a-". Here, Setsuna interrupted in an angry tone, "Eh? Of course you're Shirogetsu! And what do you mean 'being a fish' is a common way to say that someone is swimming. Do you really think that I'm that dumb?". "W-wait… wh-what?" Shirogane stuttered, completely lost. Setsuna had just spouted utter nonsense once more. After a short pause of frantic thought, the girl covered her face with her hand and cut off the conversation short, skipping over to what she had come to say in the first place, "Whatever you say, Watanuki-chan, just know that Hikari-sensei is looking all over the place for you. Go to the podium, he should be there." With what she needed said, the girl left.
Setsuna, rather than following right after, simply stared at the bathroom entrance for a couple minutes before dropping herself down to the floor and shutting off the water faucet. the girl thought as she walked out with an evil smirk plastered on her face. The girl walked straight to the podium but rather than making herself known, she carefully sneaked around until she was right in the front of the stage that the podium was. As Shirogane had said, the teacher was on the podium, placing himself at an angle that wouldn't allow him to see the Setsuna leaning right against the front of the stage. The girl remained in her spot. No one else was near the podium. By now, the preparations for the big event had proceeded all the way to either the outer edges or the back of the stage.
Setsuna waited for her chance, and that chance came when the teacher took a momentary pause to ask, "Has anyone seen Watanuki?". Before anyone else could give an answer, the girl piped up, "Here!" in a shrill, annoying voice. Of course, she was smiling. "Watanuki?" the teacher asked as he strode over to the front of the stage. After several attempts to find the girl in the chairs, the man looked directly down and found the person he had been looking for, "What are you doing down there?... And how'd you get so wet?". "Swimming," was the girl's one-word response. Then she paused before adding on for no particular reason, "I'm Nobody!". The teacher took a moment to wonder at how swimming could get only half of Setsuna soaking wet, before filing the girl's reply as another nonsense answer when she announced that her name was Nobody. "Watanuki, are you feeling alright?" the teacher asked, "You know, if you're ang-". Setsuna laughed sadistically, "Of course I'm feeling great, how can I after what's just happened? Don't worry, I'm completely angry." The answer was complete nonsense yet it sounded so convincing. The teacher frowned in confusion. It was always so hard to read Setsuna and now that she had the Kyuubi, it had never been more important. Of course, the girl didn't know that she was a jinchuuriki. The whiskers were explained away as a side-effect of what she had undergone. "Well, if you're feeling alright, Wata-" "I never said I was feeling alright," Setsuna interrupted haughtily. The teacher plowed on, he was used to such antics and knew that trying to argue with Setsuna would get the two of them nowhere, "-nuki, don't you think you should probably help the others? I mean, it is your graduation, even if you're one of the youngest." Setsuna glanced up innocently at the teacher's very teacher-like smile. "I'll help," the girl replied, "not," and then went on to the outer edges of the seats where the majority of the students were. There, the girl quickly found a place to help in and began tying up the decorative balloons.
Finally, at mid-afternoon, the graduation ceremony commenced. It went ahead without any major disturbances. Of course, Setsuna's kept on changing her expressions to the point that those next to her became quite disturbed by it, but other than that there were no problems. The graduation went on like any graduation and when the name, "Watanuki Setsuna," was called, the girl went up like any of the other soon-to-be genin, received her headband like any of the other soon-to-be-genin, returned to her seat like any other new genin, and then resumed disturbing those around her by shifting quickly from one face to another. Hikari-sensei sighed just a bit in relief, glad to see that Setsuna hadn't caused a big distraction; although, he had to admit that seeing her do the expected was unexpected--as it usually was. The prominent figures on the stage, the ones who had been present at the meeting that decided Setsuna as the Kyuubi's host, also gave each other slightly relieved glances. It seemed that all was just about alright with the girl. Of course, one of them couldn't help but raise an eyebrow in speculation, this one was obviously of the party that continued to think that Setsuna should not be a host. Despite several months having already passed, there had been very little changes in opinion on the matter of whether or not Setsuna should be the host of Kyuubi seeing how the girl had seemed to change very little herself in the several months that had passed.
Finally, with the name, "Zakura Sora," and a short ending speech, the graduation ceremony was finished. Parents hugged their children, now fully-fledged shinobis and kunoichis, and children relished in the love of their parents. The teachers and prominent figures themselves mingled amongst the crowd, the latter trying to see if they could catch a glimpse of or maybe even a moment with the Kyuubi's jinchuuriki to check on her condition with their own eyes.
Setsuna left quietly and without delay, taking heed of noone. She was less than .00000001 to the others, an unloved stranger, and that was what she wanted herself to be. After leaving the crowd far behind, the girl cheerfully sang a phrase while she caused tears to roll down her seemingly happy face:
"I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul."
Fake? Not fake? Nobody knows.

._._._._._._._._._._._._._._|._______________________________________________. |_#_#_#_#_#_#_#_#_#|_________RPC Description & History________________./ |_#_#_#_#_#_#_#_#_#| Name: Setsuna Watanuki Nickname(s): too many to list Age: 11 Birthdate: 4/1 Gender: Female Sexuality: Straight if not asexual Relationship Status: Not Interested Ethnicity: some kind of Asian
Height: 1.30 m (4' 5") Weight: 34.93 kg (77 lb) Body Build: slim and light Eye Color: light blue Hair Color: white
Physical Description: Pale, bright blue eyes underneath white, airy hair and above an almost constantly smiling face surrounded by black whisker marks (the result of being Kyuubi's host) are just about the only things about Setsuna that stand out. Her skin is light, but a normal light and while she isn't very large, she isn't in danger of being blown away by the wind or anything. Slender fingers attest to Setsuna's dexterity and slim limbs that appear as a weakness at first actually prove to be quite supple and agile. When the girl moves, very little stays constant thanks to her efforts to be unpredictable. What does stay constant, however, is the light movements of her hair, the one part of the body that the girl can't control because there are no muscles in hair. The feathery hair tends to move a lot more than most other hair does when Setsuna moves, looking like the little specks of dead-white ash that flutter in the slightest breeze. The comparison of Setsuna's hair to ashes fits in nicely with the comparison of Setsuna's eyes to a bright blue flame. Clothing-wise, Setsuna's usually chooses usefulness over fashion for two reasons: firstly because that just makes more sense and secondly because . However, she also understands that as a kunoichi she needs to keep her appearances up, so while her clothes may seem slightly worn out and faded, they are always neat. Being an orphan with no real money, Setsuna has no special gear and makes do with what she has. As a result, she really only has a couple sets of one everyday outfit. On the top, the outfit is composed of a black long-sleeved hoodie without a zipper over a black t-shirt. A dull gray scarf is wrapped around the neck, allowing for easy hiding of the lower half of the face when needed, and the hands are covered with gray, fingerless gloves. The t-shirt is of a normal length, but the hoodie stretches over the pants and all the way down to the mid-thigh and a gray utility belt that wraps around the hip rests on top of the hoodie. The pants are black, boot-cut jeans that extend to about an inch from the ground when shoes are worn, so they drag a little when the shoes are taken off. There are the traditional two pockets in the back and two in the front. For foot-ware, sneakers that were once white but are now gray are worn instead of the traditional sandals. Like the sneakers, pretty much all of Setsuna's outfit is a bit faded from so much use but they are not dirty or torn. On the contrary, they are kept clean and in one piece thanks to the girl's neat and meticulous care. The standard blue Konohagakure headband, which the girl wears on her forehead as a headband, is just about the only new piece of clothing Setsuna has and that's only because she was given it upon graduating the academy. Storage-wise, Setsuna uses the various pockets on her clothing for everyday use. More dangerous items go either in the holsters on her arms, hidden by her jacket, or in one of the standard pouches that most shinobi have. The standard thigh-holster is located on the right thigh and the standard hip-pouch is attached to the back-left side of the utility belt. The utility belt itself has several clips and pouches to hold various knick-knacks; it also has a length of rope wound around it’s right side.
Personality: Despite her ever-changing behavior that gives her a reputation for being semi-insane at times, Setsuna has a strong core that matches her strong will. However, even she herself doesn't know much about what she really thinks past her actions. Setsuna has simply been acting the way she has for too long to trace back to the original reasons for her behavior. Even if she doesn't know what exactly it is, Setsuna's core personality still exists. Setsuna is a realist, who doesn't shy away from anything about herself, even if it hurts her. At the same time, the girl is sensitive and has low self-esteem. She accepts and takes for truth the worst that people say about her, without being prepared to stand up for herself or even keep herself from sinking into depression. However, while Setsuna is practically nothing in defending herself, she is something when it comes to caring for others and that is where things get muddled. The girl refuses to have anyone trouble themselves and worry about her even though she can't help but feel what she feels, so she forces herself to hide what she feels despite feeling them so acutely. Thus, Setsuna smiles and because she has been hiding what she thinks for so long, she's gotten so used to creating masks of words, expressions, and just about anything else that she can shift between lying and telling the truth with a freakish ease. While the many years of having played this act might have erased from Setsuna's memory her original reason for acting as she does, the core still remain strong and parts of it show every now and then--although, it can be hard to tell if they are genuine or not. Always, even if she doesn't show it, Setsuna always accepts even the hardest facts, never stops trying to improve herself, and always puts others before her.
Behavior: Alone- Usually doing some quiet activity like drawing or listening to music. Sometimes she'll also be doing more troublesome, but still quiet, activities like planning pranks but she doesn't do such activities nearly as much as people would expect her to. Sometimes, when she is as certain as she can be that no one is around her, Setsuna will also play some music. With Others- This is where things get insanely complicated, and when Setsuna herself seems quite insane. For the most part, the girl is smiling. However, she has mastered a seemingly impossible range of emotions with a simple smile, to the point that at times she can even express sadness with a smile. Of course, she has other expression as well, and is well-trained in each of those as well. Randomly changing between realistic and unrealistic faces, the girl's face can never be trusted. Sometimes it'll display what she is really feeling. At other times, it won't. Likewise, her words are the same. Sometimes she'll speak the truth, other times she won't, and there are still more times when she won't lie but she won't reveal everything either. However, she does end up being reliable when the situation calls for it… sometimes. Even combined, her face and words can't be trusted. Sometimes they'll be in sync, lying and telling the truth together. However, such an outcome happens just as many times as they aren't in sync, one might be lying while the other is telling the truth. Setsuna doesn't have a single behavior when with others. Instead, she has a multitude of them and her habit of constantly switching through fake names when meeting others showcases her unstable behaviour. In Combat/Out of Combat- Thanks to the complexity that Setsuna acts with when with others, there isn't much of a difference between her in combat attitude and out of combat attitude. She fluctuates so much, that the only difference is that in one she's fighting and in the other she isn't.

Bijuu: Kyuubi {Application) {Approval} Bijuu Stage Mastery: Stage 1
Bijuu Abilities: The Kyuubi, ninth and strongest of the nine bijuus, has a knack for appearing wherever malice is present. A nine-tailed demon fox, the Kyuubi's power is thought to be immeasurable. However, while the bijuu may have unlimited power, the body of the host limits the amount of power that can be used. •Chakra-based attacks (aka: chakra element), which is neither weak nor strong to anything, in demon form. •Constant stream of chakra/stamina rather than a set chakra/stamina boost. •Regenerative abilities •Boosts to physical abilities. •Total of nine chakra tails.
Ninja Class: Weapon Master
Special Ability: [ENERGY SLICE], [ONE-HANDED SEALS]
The Weapon Master Ninja Class is able to utilize a similar technique to the Samurai's Ki Strike, called the [Energy Slice]. Instead of channeling the attack through their bodies however, the attack is channeled through their weapon of choice, or any weapon they get their hands on. Channeling their chakra through their blades, they can project an energy attack through their blades which carries the properties of any element they control. Weapon Masters can control this chakra channeling ability to such a degree that they can channel other people's elements through their weapons, or, if they can attain them, place specifically made tags on their weapons to absorb an element and utilize that element's Energy Slice.
Different element's have different effects. An Energy Slice costs an equal amount of chakra/stamina as a jutsu at the Weapon Master's current rank and it does an equivalent amount of damage to an opponent as a jutsu at that rank would. Higher level ninja (Chuunin +) however can modulate the power of the Energy Slice to act as a lower rank, reducing the cost and power of the technique. After using an [Energy Slice], the Weapon Master requires a cooldown of 2 posts before they can use the technique again.
Each element creates a different effect:
Katon: Energy Slice is red and will light combustibles on fire. Dissipates/Slices through Offensive Fuuton Ninjutsu equal to rank of the Energy Slice.
Fuuton: Energy Slice is green and travels with great speed and exact precision, with the strongest cutting power (can cut through bone). Dissipates/Slices through Offensive Raiton Ninjutsu equal to rank of the Energy Slice.
Raiton: Energy Slice is a mingling of light blue and yellow and strikes in an erratic pattern, splitting into up to 3 attacks against multiple foes. Dissipates/Slices through Offensive Doton Ninjutsu equal to rank of the Energy Slice.
Doton: Energy Slice is brown and travels across the ground at great speed, ripping up the earth and carrying the debris with it as it goes, creating a wave of earth. Dissipates/Slices through Offensive Suiton Ninjutsu equal to rank of the Energy Slice.
Suiton: Energy Slice is blue and spreads into a rippled rushing wave of energy in the air. Dissipates/Slices through Offensive Katon Ninjutsu equal to rank of the Energy Slice.
[Channeling another RPC's element] - The RPC must be in contact with the Weapon Master's weapon to infuse their element into it. This requires an amount of chakra equal to one rank below the Weapon Master's rank, and the Weapon Master must still spend chakra equal to his own rank to propel the Energy Slice.
[Element Tags] - These items must be crafted by a Weapon Master and they can only infuse it with the elements they have an affinity for. Weapon Masters can only carry up to 3 tags at any point in time, and the tags themselves are Single-use items, meaning it is used up after one Energy Slice. The tag itself, only carries the elemental affinity that will be infused into the weapon, not the chakra itself. The Weapon Master's chakra is still required to activate the tag and utilize the infused element's Energy Slice.
Tweak: Dropping a Kenjutsu style (up to either A- or S-rank, still have to decide), to gain additional Genjutsu techniques. - Dropping a Taijutsu/Kenjutsu style lets you learn an additional 3 Ninjutsu or Genjutsu per rank dropped (So, if you drop a full style, that is an additional 15 jutsu total, 3 jutsu per rank).
Honestly, the majority of Setsuna's traits lean more towards the assassin class. The girl's unpredictability, cunning, and knack for hiding all gave those around her the impression that she would seek to become an assassin. However, as usual, she was, as mentioned, unpredictable, and chose to master weapons rather than stealth; although, she still remained quite good at hiding herself. Of course, that's not to say Setsuna isn't all that good with weapons. Actually, she has quite the talent for using weapons in a variety of creative ways. It was simply assumed that her behavior seemed more like an assassin's behavior than a weapon master's behavior.
Attributes:
Primary Attribute: Cunning
Benefit: +1/2 rank to all Genjutsu (making all of their Genjutsu more difficult and convincing then normal). Able to think quickly to dodge/counter incoming attacks, and able to more easily detect traps set by an enemy. Their traps are also more effective then others, increasing their chances of working. Cunning ninja are also affected less by the manipulative effects of those with the 'Sexy Attribute'... though they would still be rather attracted to them.
Combat Ability: Once per combat, so long as the opponent is not more than 2 ranks above you, a ninja with this attribute can utilize "Insight" to either escape from a trap, jutsu, or attack which would otherwise hit them using some crazy maneuver, or through insight gained in fighting your opponent, make your next attack much more likely to hit through a brilliant tactic. (The RP maneuver used to escape or hit however, has to at least be somewhat legitimate, at least in theory.)
Secondary Attribute: Strong Willed
Benefit: Ninja with this attribute treat themselves as if they were 1 ranks higher when resisting Genjutsu. Also, these ninja are capable of learning one ninjutsu which is 2 ranks higher then their current level, but it requires 1.5x the normal posts to learn. Additionally, certain bloodlines which are mentally taxing to the user, or jinchuuriki will find it easier to resist falling to their own weaknesses in times of stress. (The exact benefits will be determined when relevant and on a case by case basis).
Tertiary Attribute: Agility
→ Those with light bodies and a tendency to appear/disappear in unexpected places at unexpected times have a natural agility. However this unrefined agility doesn't rival the agility of others who are more talented and practiced in the attribute.
Setsuna is a well-balanced human, despite the unnatural imbalances within her caused by the presence of the Kyuubi and the seemingly natural imbalance that her behavior usually portrays. Mind, body, and soul are all strong: cunning for the mind, agility for the body, and strong willed for the mind. This balance allows Setsuna to change her fighting style as she wishes. Her strong will allows her to take hits if she chooses to. Her agility allows her to dodge if she chooses to. Her cunning allows her to trick and trap if she chooses to. Combined, the possibilities are as many as the faces Setsuna can make her own. Talking about her ability to change her expression so freely, her three attributes also play a key role in that. Cunning allows the girl to create expression that seem real--or even fake if she chooses to--and agility gives the girl the reaction to effortlessly change from one emotional mask to the other should she need to. Strong will is what keeps Setsuna from going completely insane with her constantly changing face, what keeps her personality intact. All in all, the balance Setsuna has with her attributes is what allows her to live with the imbalance of her life.
Specialties:
Stealth: Though Stealth ninja cannot make themselves seemingly invisible as Assassins can, they still find many ways to hide their presence. Stealth ninja have the ability to completely mute their footsteps and are extremely adept at moving without making any noise. Also, although they cannot disappear as an Assassin in [Stealth], they can still hide their chakra signatures to avoid being detected by a Sensor, or a shinobi with a detection bloodline (To detect a Stealth ninja via chakra signature, you must be an equal ranked Sensor ninja, or have a bloodline which puts you at an effective equal rank in terms of detection).
Stealth ninja also have a series of unique abilities which help them to hide their intentions and true identities in when they are in plain sight. When performing jutsu, they need not 'announce' the title of their technique, allowing them merely to use the necessary hand seals to create the effect. All Stealth ninja also have the ability to use Slight of Hand, allowing them to make small objects (shuriken, kunai, a scroll, etc...) appear and disappear in their hands seemingly instantaneously. This allows them to make subtle movements, removing or placing items in their pockets/pouches behind their backs without even the keenest observer noticing.
Additionally, Stealth ninja can 'infuse' any clone they make with their own chakra signature, which can throw pursuing sensors off their trail. If a stealth ninja is 'marked' by a sensor, the mark also appears on the clone, making the Sensor see a 'double' image. This forces them to make a choice as to which 'marked' target they will attempt to track down, giving the Stealth Ninja a better chance to escape.
Summoner: Allows a ninja to sign a Summoning Contract and gain access to the summons within it. To call the summons, the users must still be trained by the Summoning's Scroll Carrier (Summoning/Contract Sage), and they can only learn summons up to their current rank. No shinobi can access summons without this specialty.
