Now please don't hate on me because I am not trying to offend you. What if, right as you were dying, you saw what happened when you died and you saw that there was nothing. You just stopped functioning and ceased to exist. How would you cope with this? What about the fact that you didn't live your life to it's fullest because you thought that it would mean a better life after death? I can easilly tell you my answer: I really woudn't care because I would be about to die and everything would seem incredibly insignificant. Everything is very insignificant..

Ceasing to exist wouldn't be so bad. I'd be disappointed and feel a little bit cheated, sure, but that's alright too. I wouldn't have to worry about coping with it, or adjusting to the idea. If I'm unfortunate enough to survive my family, then I'll be looking forward to it. If not, then I'll be surrounded by my loved ones, and that'll give me peace too.

Define "cease to exist" and I can probably answer that question.

First of all. When I say "cease to exist" I mean you die. You can never think another thought and you can't do anything anymore because you don't really exist anymore. Also, and this one is really hard because everyone in this guild is a christian, you died and went to heaven/hell when you previously thought that you would just die. I would feel a little upset and confused because I thought I knew how something worked but it turned out to be wrong. I would also feel relieved (wrongly assuming that I went to heaven) but in a sort of edgy way. It would be like, "don't worry about anything anymore because you are in heaven" but I wouldn't be able to relax because I wouldn't understand how this happened. I was just watching this and it really moved me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw49mm-CmNo&feature=related

In that case I wouldn't care If I couldn't think or ponder about the passing of one existence into another. No contentment, no privileged rest. Just nothing.

However, I can't accept that: I get too bored with the idea lol.

That and I believe in an afterlife, so that only begs the question.

I was thinking of taking philosophy once I get into a college/university. I think that I would find it the most interesting subject to take but it's probably on of the least useful. I still have plenty of time to make up my mind but stil...

Christianity (and other religions who have similar beliefs) has a no disappointment guarantee. If we are wrong we will never know we are wrong we will simply as you stated cease to exist. However if we are right we will know that we are right as we celebrate in heaven with God.

Atheism/Agnosticism has a no satisfaction guarantee. If an agnostic or an atheist is wrong he will in fact know that he is wrong as he will be burning for all of eternity in a desolate hell for not accepting the holy word of God. However if he is right he will never know that he is right because he will simply cease to exist

Nicely put. I believe that I repect that reasoning.

If that were true then it truly be insignificant, now wouldn't it? Nothing would really matter. My mom said she once died, for while probably for a minute or two or 3, Idk how long, she said it felt nice to die, she says she was being sucked down at full speed but then the nurse or nurses brought her back. So I don't think you cease to exist.

A lot of times doctors will play that as the neurons in your brains misfiring as will most scientists.

I guess if that was the case, if I was dead I wouldn't care.

We watched a documentary in my Anatomy class about death. About one third of the film was dedicated to sharing peoples' stories of near-death experiences. Every one of them told incredibly similar stories about seeing a light as well as being able to look down on their seemingly lifeless bodies. I took comfort in knowing that even though it can't be proved scientifically, qualitative reasoning suggests an afterlife.

Brilliantly said. I agree. Makes for great Christian Apologetics material.

Personally, I am frightened by the proposition of nothingness, spiritual and physical non-existence, or limbo/oblivion.
I'm not a coward, mind you, but I personally am bothered by the idea of not having thoughts, sensations, or even anything for that matter.
Heaven is certainly a more agreeable outcome.
