I like them, provided they're well done. Typically, I read the scanslation to get the idea of the plot and art (I use manga for art references), then get a hardcopy of the manga to look at more closely.

It's the story of my life.Scanslations are when a person who knows both Japanese and English gets a copy of a manga right when it comes out in Japan, then scans it into their computer and translates the text. Then, they post it on the web for the world to enjoy.I know who would want to take me home...--Semisonic, Closing Time

I have to read scans. I am poor. I couldn't go out and spend all that money. But if you have h time and money, go out and buy them...really.
I have to go to Taiwan to buy my manga, because it's intensely cheaper. About 3 bucks for a Conan manga.

I find them as a guideline of what to actually buy... I read the scans... if I like it... I'll go out and buy it!!! if im soso with it i'll read it more... then drop it... if its bad... At least i didn't waste my precious [and my little] money... >.>
I try to support everything I have read online and liked by buying the volumes or by buying the magazine [ex. Shonen Jump] its sterilized in >.>

Scanslations are fan-made translations of the manga, usually posted on the internet. Basically, when new chapters of the manga are released (for example, Naruto comes out weekly), fans would scan the chapters from the magazines (hence the term 'scanslation') and translate them into English for other fans to read online. Although they aren't the officially published versions of the manga, they're pretty popular because they some out a lot faster than the novels do. (Does this help? Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this...)

I also like scanslations, provided that they're well-done. Although they're not entirely legal ( sweatdrop ), they are a good way to show how much fans appreciate the manga.
Usually, I read the scans and then check out the hardcopies from the library ('cause I'd rather not empty my bank account, lolz) if I like the series enough. smile

I don't mind scanslations, but I prefer to buy the manga. I am pretty busy so it doesn't bother me not to read the chapter right when it comes out lol I usually only read scanslations when I can't get the manga. For example Loveless, Viz quit publishing it so I have been reading it online.

<3 The only time I will read scans is if the manga will never ever ever or most likly not get published in America. Other then that, I buy all my manga or I go to the library : P

Well obviously its always preferred to buy the manga but, considering the over rated prices in western countries and the small amounts in my country.. it's not always possible and definitely I couldnt afford it. So yea scanlations are cool >>
as for quality... well since there are groups that actually do this big favor for me totally free, I couldnt care less about the quality I just merely wish that its detailed enough to see the art well.

I like them, they're how I've read most of the mangas I know of.
"Emma" and "Immortal Rain" for instance. I didn't know they weren't entirely legal...
