Is anybody else so used to the societal taboo or all things sexual that when they see 18+ they automatically think a sexual connotation is involved, even if you know there is nothing sexual about it?
I thought about this because I'm a member of another guild. It is a general discussion guild for those who are 18 or older. The guild has the notation: "18+" in the title. I know there is nothing sexual about it, but I have been so brainwashed by society that I think there is some sexual meaning for a second until my common sense takes over.
Overall thoughts on this? Also, while we are at it, how about some intelligent ruminations on whether or not sexuality should be such the taboo that it is.
I personally think it is rather pointless to make something natural so forbidden in the first place. It gives many people the wrong idea, and it might explain why a lot of people have such skewed views on the whole subject of sex in the first place.

Hmm...it could also refer to the level of maturity needed to understand the game/story. Although a lot of 18 years olds are NOT of deep thought...
But because of the sexual nature of our society, when we think of age, we automatically think of how much sex is in it.

I say it's not that we think it has sex, but we think that it could. That it could have some sexual content, because that would be one of the few restrictions on age we have.
We only have age limits below 25 for certain things:
Sexual content Drinking Driving Recruiting Emancipation
Since, out of those, we talk about sex the most, many people would think that the age limitation concerns that particular subject. It's not a brainwashing, it's just that we draw that conclution because, in the opinion of many, secluding an age group for just being an age group is somewhat pointless, because most of those discussions are based on maturity, which is relative, subjective, and has nothing to do with age. That's why think "Oh, it must have adult content", instead of "Oh, it's for people 18+ to talk and socialize".

I was hoping this thread was gonna be a bunch of people chatting using only sentences with sexual undertones. But it's not.
Which sucks, so hard.

Quite the governmental c**k-up I suppose, is communism. Theoretically sound, practically unsound.

The question should not be what society as a whole chooses to do. We have no control over this pathetic system; all we have contorl over is personal decision. I hate when a significant other (or worse, a potential significant other clearly showing much interest in me) fails to act because of these damn sex taboos. I'm the type of person that allows a luv of mine to do anything they want. When they don't, it aggravates me just a bit. I'm wonderful at voicing such opinions. They don't necessarily have to be sexual; that just happened to be the question addressed in this particular forum. I have many unorthodox opinions, and they are only unorthodox because of society's skewed notions. I believe them to be right. I apologize for sounding as though I am above any of them, but I am quite a bit smarter than most I am so unfortunate to meet. If you knew me, you would know it is quite the opposite, and that my issues with self-esteem completely contradict the notion that I believe in the least I am above anyone. Still, I sway many with a bit more intelligence than the usual (which is, sadly, quite low) and it gives me a bit of satisfaction. Do not aim society. Aim for those who will listen, and those who deserve to be told, since they are deprived not of intelligence but knowledge in such matters. If you do just that, all of us, society will change itself in our image, and we won't swim in quite so much filth.

Hell, you can't get much kinkier than the likes of me, don't get me wrong, but intelligence is so rare. It's nice. So you can have it all in a guild, huh? -^_^-

I suppose in fairness, most other guilds are a bit wet when it comes to staying up on rules. This guild's pretty hard on folks without intelligence, so by ejecting those who don't meet the set requirements, we're left with smart folks.
On the note of this topic, then.
I'm still somewhat used to thinking automatically of sexual situations when confronted by the giant "18+" banner proudly worn on titles, games, films, etcetera. Media brainwashing, blah blah, no need to get into that.
Koiyuki mentioned that it could refer to maturity level, and i'd be inclined to agree; I do disagree on his point about many 18-year-olds being of deep thought, as the context illustrates differences between General, 13+, 15+, 18+ and Mature ratings. An 18-year-old is much more likely to be more mature and understand the game/story/film/etc than a 12 - 15 year old may be.
Vyce mentioned a conclusion of secluding an age group - this is linked to Koi's thoughts. I'd imagine that we seclude that age group, unlike what Vyce mentioned on relatives, but because of all likelihood.
Draw out a statistical model, and you'll find more mature 18 year olds than 14 year olds.
Of course, i'll still agree that there is no sudden magical change in maturity from 17 to 18. It's just the law of averages - you'll get a normal distribution if plotting graphs.

I was smarter at thirteen than many of the eighteen-year-olds I was forced to encounter. It just angered me that these imbeciles were respected more than a younger girl with a much greater intelligence. It's sad, really. Although I do speak with those older than I am (for obvious reasons rolleyes ) those who are younger than me make just as good of a friend. Some of them are damn smart when you give them a chance. evil sweatdrop Bad childhood. xp

Some of them are damn smart when you give them a chance. evil sweatdrop Bad childhood. xp It's the use of the phrase, "Age equals wisdom". Where you might find that most 18-year-olds you've encountered are actually imbeciles, they have more life experience than a 13-year-old, in that they've been on the planet longer. By being alive for longer, they're higher up on the hierachy than younger folks, and therefore more respected. It's like a deformed version of the work hierachy, when that works right and isn't subjected to bribes and/OR sexing the manager up. In that sense, I understand the whole separation process. Yes, some younger folks really can be surprisingly intelligent; i'm just more inclined to talk finer biomedical sciences details with a young adult, than an early teen.
