Official Transcript

Due to a medical complication with Fleet-sanctioned nanotechnology, Captain Serafima A. Rabik, O-6, will be relocated to Gaia in order to pursue rehabilitation and recovery. Her bonded feien, Galatea, will accompany her and continue to serve as aide and companion.

Captain Rabik will be given lodgings and a living stipend. She is prohibited from performing in any military capacity until the medical corp and her personal doctor clear her for duty. Due to the fact that this is a temporary suspension from duty, there has been no memory erasure. Captain Rabik and Galatea will adhere to the usual protocols and security procedures.

This decision is final and there will be no appeal.

Galatea

Name: Galatea
AKA: n/a
Affiliation: Fleet
Age: Juvenile
Summonday: December 20
Height: 3.7"
Hair: Black with pink streak in the forefront, long and straight to shoulder blades with heavy bangs
Eyes: Pink, wide and round
Skin: Olive
Markings/Prellan: dark violet, maximal; covering her feet and stretching in erratic points up to the back of her knees and over her calves; covering hands and arms entirely as well as sides and hips and backside, coming over her torso and stomach and thighs in symmetrical points
Favorite Food: none yet
Likes: approval (especially that of Serafima and Dr. Beckham), learning new things, listening, flying
Dislikes: failing (actually, it's more like a paralyzing fear)
Hobbies: none really yet because you certainly can't count sitting on Captain Rabik's shoulder for hours at a time as a hobby
Weaknesses: Galatea has horrible luck and low magic. Surely this counts as a bad thing for inherently magical creatures. Not to mention her extreme dependence on her rather frigid bond.

Personality: to come

History: Being very young at the moment, Galatea's entire history can be summed up thusly - She was summoned, she bonded with Serafima Rabik, she came to Gaia. Ta da!

Capt. Serafima Rabik

Name: Captain Serafima Alexandrovna Rabik
Meaning: Serafima - Burning One; Alexandrovna - patronymic, daughter of Alexander, Defender of Man; Rabik - Slave
AKA: Sera (if you can prove blood relation, you may use this), Captain, Rabik
Affiliation: Fleet INT, on medical leave
Age: 26
Birthdate: December 11
Height: 5'10"
Blood Type: B
Favorite Food: oatmeal, fried eggs
Likes: exercise, tests, books on natural sciences, practice (of -all- things, both martial and non), crossword puzzles, Russian folk music, sweaters with high necks, cold showers, pre-dawn walks/jogs, kitchen gardens
Dislikes: clubs, irresponsible people, incompetent people, people who insist on talking, being marked as off-duty, pop music, impressionist painting, children, small animals, decorative flower gardens
Hobbies: reading non-fiction (only!), tai chi, jogging, survival weekends/camping, savate, karate, sewing (only practical sewing, though, no embroidery)
Weaknesses: Currently, her biggest weakness is her health; she is undergoing extensive tissue reconstruction and physical therapy to heal from the aftermath of a nanite reaction. Mentally and emotionally, her status is tenuous for the moment as a result of being unable to do the job which is her defining trait.

Assessments

Galatea

the Captain - Galatea absolutely idolizes Serafima Rabik and cannot bear the thought of disappointing her. Nor can she bear the thought of someone criticizing her precious Captain; in fact, she honestly cannot imagine anyone -wanting- to criticize Capt. Rabik. To her, Serafima is the epitome of strength, intelligence, purpose, and propriety. She wants little more than to make her proud.

the Director - Falling into a rather similar category as Serafima, Antipov is put on a very high pedestal by Galatea. This is partially because Serafima respects him so totally; the respect flowed downhill to her little mimic. Galatea also respects him, though, for having his own feien and always knowing what to do.

Dr. Beckham - Rounding out the trio of influential "big people" for Galatea, the good doctor is the most humane and the kindest to her. Again, she adores him to the point of physical affection (a definite rarity from her) and thinks he is brilliant. This causes some conflict within Galatea, however, since her Captain and Dr. Beckham obviously have different views on her and how she should be treated.

Hadrian - Galatea quite likes Hadrian and thinks of him as very nice and clever. She is impressed by his control of his magic. She has already taken to worrying a bit about his well-being and, with her, that definitely means you're a friend.

Lorelei - Galatea is still unsure about Lorelei since their meeting was brief and she likes to take her times on things like that. However, she has decided that Lorelei is nice and fairly clever.

Kojak - Galatea has only had brief contact with Kojak and is still formulating a full opinion. If asked, though, she would answer honestly that he is nice and kind.

Ruby Soho - Ruby Soho baffles Galatea completely. She just doesn't know how to follow the other girl's thought process and yet, because Soho is so very -nice-, she wants to try. Galatea also has some instinct to protect her. At least to not worry her, anyway. Meanwhile, Soho's open nature has Galatea wondering if there is something wrong with her own mind/personality.

Aleric - Galatea is currently in slight awe of Aleric. He seems to know so much and he's calm and kind and strong and everything she thinks a person should be.

Silva - Galatea has decided to respect Silva since meeting him. It isn't quite hero-worship (yep, it's hero worship now) but she is impressed by his strength and abilities and she is thrown by his rough kindness to her. Frankly, I think the poor guy is going to be equated with the Captain in her mind... But warmer and isn't that just hysterical?

Marne - If Soho confuses Galatea, Marne takes that a step further and almost scares her with her boisterous, free nature. Marne's cheerful disregard of concepts like personal space continue to throw the quiet blood feien. She can still tease a smile out, though.

Burgundia - Galatea's new magic teacher and the most classically feminine influence in her life. Galatea is a bit impatient with Burgundia's drawling ways and mannerisms but she respects her obvious intelligence and skills. She trusts her.

Brunswick - It has been a while since they last met but Galatea remembers him quite well and is a bit uncomfortable in his presence. She remembers him and his siblings from the Fleet days and their goals and attitudes always struck her as particularly abherrant and wrong. Besides, he flirts horribly and that just makes her flustered.

Nick and Nack - Galatea likes the animal-boy proteges of Mr. Silva. She doesn't quite know how to react to Nick's more boisterous nature but she'll get over it. She thinks they're clever and strong and looks forward to working with them.

Journal of Capt. S.A.Rabik

EC1+5M10, 03

In an attempt to aid my recovery, Dr. Beckham has recommended me for the receipt of a feien bloom. I cannot say that I understand his reasoning since it would be far more beneficial to my health if he would allow me more hours in the gymnasium but you cannot argue with the man. He is intelligent and well-respected by the other officers. No one will believe my personal feelings over his diagnosis.

I expect to receive the bloom within a few days. I suppose I will spend the time checking the files and searching for any information on the care of the thing. I have heard rumors of strange reactions and practices. I am not sure as to what I will have to do and this makes me uneasy. I do know one thing, though. I refuse to behave like a moonstruck calf over the thing. I have seen perfectly sensible officers become soft-headed idiots over those tiny creatures. Dr. Beckham can force me to take on a feien but he cannot pretend it is of my blood. Ridiculous notion. I still cannot follow his logic in how this situation will aid me. The medical procedures and my own training should be sufficient. Unless, of course, he means for this to be a distraction.

Perhaps that is it. My superiors have been loathe to discuss my reinstatement with me lately. I believe they do not think I am fully capable once more.

Journal of Capt. S.A.Rabik

EC1+5M12, 10

After being summoned to Dr. Beckham's office earlier today, I was handed a strange, unidentifiable flower. If it is right to call it a flower. I have been on many planets and seen many things but I am not even certain that this "feien bloom" could be biologically classified as a plant, let alone a flower. I suppose Dr. Beckham mistook the expression on my face for worry because he immediately reassured me that I would do fine and they were hardy creatures. All I was to do was give it attention and love.

I did not tell Dr. Beckham that I am currenly using the child psychology book he gave me to level my nightstand until I can arrange for maintenance to come and fix it. Perhaps when the feien assumes a more humanoid form and can speak, it will be of use but, for now, a book on children is worse than useless for a plant.

The bloom is sitting on my desk at the moment. On top of my copy of Nietsche. Somehow I doubt that will be affecting the creature. I turned my sun lamp on it for an hour earlier but there seemed to be no response. Though how a plant is supposed to respond to anything, I cannot say. I heard stories of the things shifting about if and when they are pleased. It sounds like nonsense to me.

Nonetheless, I plan on exposing it to the sun lamp periodically and I have acquired a mister for watering it. We shall see.

ETA: I returned from the usual blood-drawing for my weekly tests to find the bloom shriveled. Too much sun lamp does not suit it, it seems. In attempting to resucitate it with the water mister, my bandage came loose and brushed against it. Perhaps the blood loss has me bordering on anemia. I believed I saw a sparkle along the rims of the petals.

Journal of Capt. S.A.Rabik

EC1+5M12, 20

I returned from my weekly physical today to discover that the petals on the feien bloom had begun to curl backwards upon themselves. Upon inspection, though, it was not the first stages of death; the edges appeared vibrant yet and flexible, not crumbling or blackened. To be on the safe side, I gave it a dose of the mister and moved it closer to my air purifier. I had to rest it on a series of books to get it to a suitable height. Again, I do not think that Dostoyevsky or Darwin will hurt the plant.

ETA: At 2010, the bloom went through a series of convulsions and I was forced to move it back to the desk for fear that it would pitch itself from the stack of books. As I held it, though, the fits grew more violent. What exactly are these creatures? Plant or animal?

ETA: At 2045, the bloom seemed to dissolve in an explosion of sparkles light. When I went to observe what happened, there was a very small humanoid sitting in a fetal position atop my desk blotter. It shivered violently and two small wings on its back moved slightly. They were damp, though, so I assume the weight prevented proper motion. It took a full three minutes before the creature finally released its hold on its knees and crawled carefully to its feet.

A large portion of its body is covered in symmetrical purple markings. The rest of its skin is, ironically enough, the same tone as mine. It has pink eyes and dark hair, interrupted by a ridiculous streak of pink. Its wings are small and insect-like, also purple in color. It is approximately three inches tall. It is already speaking and its voice is not unpleasant, merely very soft and quiet. Something to which I will not object.

ETA: I have named her Galatea. She is studying one of my medical reports at the moment after having taken some water. I am still uncertain how this will aid in my return to duty but I must admit that this blood feien seems intelligent and acceptably good-natured.

Journal of Capt. S.A.Rabik

EC1+5M12, 31

This night is usually a night of celebration. I imagine my parents and younger sister are preparing for a fireworks show of some sort even as I type this. That would be back home, of course. Here on the base, there are few things out of the norm. I believe a few parties are being held but I am not interested in such things. I have more important things on my mind.

It seems that, as a way to start the new year, my superiors have decided to award me with a change of location. Galatea and I have received a set of orders that state we are to be prepared to go to ground on a planet named Gaia in less than two weeks. I can only imagine why they are doing this. Perhaps Dr. Beckham has reported that my recovery is not progressing as well as hoped, despite the assignment of Galatea. Who, I admit, is a curious, intelligent creature. She is quiet and unobtrusive, very considerate of my habits and sensibilities. She never demands any special treatment or complains. In fact, she is almost preternaturally quiet. The good doctor has made comment on that as well. No matter. She is healthy and mobile and shows no sign of believing herself ill-treated. These feien are beings in their own right. I hardly think any intelligent creature would appreciate being coddled. It would be humiliating.

Nonetheless, we are to relocate to Gaia. We will be given quarters near the so-called shop there, more than adequate, and a living stipend. Dr. Beckham tells me that he will be making regular visits to perform physicals. I suppose it could be worse. I have researched this planet and the locale seems very much like home in many ways. I can pursue my own path of recuperation with fresh air and exercise. Also, Antipov is the officer in charge of the area and there is no arguing that he is a fine commander and a brilliant man. I will not be confined to a backwater.

Galatea merely nodded at the news and asked what she is to do to prepare. A very capable young feien. Very sensible.

I hope to write again from this room before another year is out. I will return to my duties or know the reason why.

New Starts Are Fun!

When the three -- no, four, the fourth figure so small as to be eclipsed by her human companions -- figures materialized in the center of the Fleet's Gaia HQ waiting room, they were already in the middle of a conversation.

"... you give them half an inch, they will take from you a mile," Antipov was saying, missing the proper delivery for the adage just enough to exaggerate his non-native English. "Do not trust these Gaians."

The ever-hopeful doctor alongside the Director adjusted his coat, grimacing more than a little. "Don't mind that. I'm sure it's just a case of finding the smooth handle. What's important right now is the feien. Wouldn't you say, Director?"

Antipov made a noise that could hardly be interpreted as agreeable and fixed their companion with a stern look. "If anything it is the feien you should be worried about, Captain Rabik."

The dark haired woman merely nodded, seemingly unaware of the feien that was sitting on her squared shoulders; her posture was perfect and her dark eyes were fixed obediently (but not insolently) on the Director's face. "Yes, sir. I shall keep that in mind," she replied. "I cannot imagine that everyone has trained their feien in any sort of suitable manner." Suddenly, she twisted her head and regarded the small purple-marked creature on her shoulder cooly. "Galatea is well-behaved and will, I'm sure, help in any endeavors."

Pink eyes wide, Galatea nodded shortly. "Yes, ma'am. Of course. As the Director says."

Antipov smirked; Dr. Beckham looked as if he was trying to bite back a thousand more suggestions, considering the woman's track record.

The director swept his hand around the room. "This is our Regional Headquarters on Gaia, I am sure it will soon become as second nature to you."

"Of course." Serafima Rabik shifted her attention to take in the room around them, dismissing and absorbing without thought. "I plan on visiting frequently. After all, I wish to remain on track with the information until Dr. Beckham pronounces me ready for reinstatement."

"Which will only come if you take the time to relax and bond with Galatea," the doctor reminded her. "Remember, she's not only your cure, but she's a living and breathing being. Don't treat her as some kind of organic pill, Captain. The road to recovery will come quicker if you and Galatea get to know each other. Remember to talk to her, for goodness' sake. You're extraordinarily capable, Captain, don't be complacent and leave her like you did the bloom." It sounded like as much of a critique as Beckham would ever offer.

Antipov, of course, gave another of his snorts of disdain, and added an eye roll this time for good measure.

Raising an eyebrow, Serafima rewarded Dr. Beckham's words with a cool look. "I speak to her," she replied shortly. "I am aware of her living status, Doctor. Just as I remember your... Corrections when she was still a bloom."

Galatea twined her fingers together and ducked her head; she seemed accustomed to being discussed in front of herself. "It is alright, sir," she murmured, barely audible. "The Captain is a very good bond. She is strong."

***

From the lounge resounded a shriek of pure, unadulterated, rage.

"HE WHAT!!!?? What do you mean Silva took off on some cockamaemie QUEST with Aleric and Soho! Why that no good, rotten, arrogant, misanthropic b*****d didn't even say goodbye!" Averno's hollering was half panic, half anger as she stomped across a couch irritably.

Arae winced at the yelling, folding her arms over her chest and peering at her co-bond through one eye slitted open, the other one shut tight against the steaming fury of her 'sister'.

"I don't understand why you're so upset, Averno, I thought you hated him?" she pointed out.

Averno froze in her pacing and glared at Arae. "Yes. Of course I hate him. I just...just like to keep my friends close and my enemies closer." Right, that sounded plausible. Right?

***

Antipov actually startled; he hadn't checked with security to see if anyone was actually -in- the building prior to his arrival, because he knew security kept the place safe for arrivals at all times. "Ah," he said, "the locals." He said it as one remarked on the technologically-disadvantaged local tribes of unexplored regions, or perhaps the Russian peasantry.

"Indeed. And as an officer, I know the value of strength," said Antipov, a not-too-subtle jibe at Beckham's nonmilitary status.

If anything, that just made Beckham look even more worried. He bent his head a little, giving Galatea a kindly smile. "Well, now, don't you be afraid to get to know the other feien, Galatea. Act like a juvenile while you still can. Get some, er, fun in."

Considering the shriek that Averno had produced, Dr. Beckham looked as if he somehow doubted fun could, in fact, be had. He straightened up, and adjusted his coat again. "Strength isn't the be-all and end-all. Love is going to play an important part in this, saccharine as it sounds."

You could hear Antipov's mental anguish at this love statement. He made a sour face.

***

Arae's musical laughter floated from the lounge. "Oh my word, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were in love with Silva." She blinked and peered closer at Averno, reaching out a hand to stop her sister's pacing. She looked at her closely then blinked some more.

"You ARE! You're in love with that raving lunatic! Really Averno, I thought better of you."

Averno jerked away from Arae's grasp and turned her back on her, muttering a rather unconvincing, "Don't be ridiculous. He means nothing to me."

With a few more heatedly exchanged words, Arae and Averno stomped out, unaware there were others in the HQ.

***

Carefully unfolding her hands, Galatea stood. One of her tiny hands momentarily had rested upon Serafima's ear as she clambered to her feet but it was immediately drawn back as if burnt. Then she again laced her fingers together and held them over her stomach, shoulders back and head high; she was obviously mimicing her bond's military bearing. "I will do my best, Doctor, sir," she answered. "I will meet with others." She paused to glance at the room where the noises were coming from and frowned. "And... Perhaps we can exchange information."

Serafima nearly smiled at that. "As you can see, Doctor, Galatea is more than capable of living her own life. I do not have to watch over her every moment of the day. Please stop advising me of love."

"YES," said Antipov, a degree too loud. "When your love leaves you, if you do not have strength you will not endure. Love is merely a temporary condition, strength will bear you through all times."

"I am your doctor, Captain, so don't brush off my advice," Beckham said, obviously mentally grumbling about the military types and the fact that every single one of them needed at least seven good sessions of therapy. "I'll be checking up on you regularly. Honestly. I'm not as prejudiced as the Director against these Gaians, but the last time I came I was called as an emergency for a mass poisoning! Keep your eye on Galatea. She is young yet. And don't listen to the Director, either, he's very fond of Verine. She's in excellent health."

"Tch," said Antipov, folding his arms and looking away. Having Verine brought up seemed to embarrass him; his cheeks even flushed a degree noticable to Serafima's eagle eyes.

Galatea almost brightened at the mention of Verine; she had never had the pleasure but she listened and, thanks to Serafima's influence, held the elder feien in the same holy awe that her bond held Antipov. "I promise I will be careful, Doctor, and I will be healthy," she assured him breathily. "I do not want to inconvenience Captain Rabik."

Another near-smile flashed over Serafima's severe features, as pleased as she ever got.

"Director, you look a bit flushed," said Beckham cheerfully, obviously loving every moment of getting to rarely tease the other man. "Are you sure you don't want me to check you for a fever? You could be coming down with something."

"Gah, no, stay away!" said Antipov, jumping back a step and uncrossing his arms. He pushed at his glasses. "I suppose I should give you a tour of the premises."

Serafima immediately snapped to attention, nearly knocking Galatea from her shoulder. The feien scrabbled and grabbed at a loose piece of hair until she regained her balance. "Yes, sir." Somehow, Serafima managed to even -sound- like she was saluting. "That would be very useful."

Straightening, Antipov gestured to the nearby door with his name on it. "This is my office. I am in it often enough that you may expect to find me there. Down this way," he started down the hall, "Hamada's office, the kitchen, the refrigerator is fully-stocked, a closet, the bathroom..." He paused and slowed as they neared the lounge, only to nearly run into the exiting woman and her feien. He started to say something, then stepped aside to let them pass.

Next to both of them, Beckham sighed, obviously willing himself desperately not to let the words 'stress-related tension exercises' pass his lips to the Captain.

Antipov waited until Sajhiri, Averno, and Arae were safely gone before continuing. "This is Dr. M's office over here, but I do not expect he will let you in it. And finally, this is the lounge. It has some popularity with the local feien and their bonds."

"They come and go here freely?" Serafima asked. "There is no clearance necessary?"
