What music do you like to listen to when you're writing? How much does music unfluence your writing?
I actually love listening to soundtrack music- stuff from shows like 'King Arthur' and 'Stardust'. It really fits the music that would play if my books were ever made into a movie. So inspiring.
I also don't actually listen to music at the same time I write- it's distracting. But I usually write right after I listen to some really good music.
You?

Movie soundtracks and video game music. As long as it doesn't have words. If it does, I'm liable to sing instead of write, and that defeats the purpose.
That's not to say that music with lyrics doesn't inspire me at all. There have been several occasions where a song will play on my iPod or on the radio and I'll go "*GASP* This song goes perfectly with what's-her-face's scene where she insert something dramatic here!"
The only downside to those moments is they make me apply that scene to that song from that point on.

When I write, I make my character first. Then I listen to the music that that person would listen to. It helps me keep them in character the best I can, because it puts me in that mood. Most of my characters end up being punk a**es because I can't stand pop or hip hop or rap music. Rock is my thing. Right now I'm listening to Rammstien.

Sometimes if my mind is preoccupied with something else, I'll have to avoid certain songs so my mind won't go into my story. I love listening to my 'story music' while on long drives, and it used to bring me great new ideas, but now... the same scenes just play over and over again. No new stuff.

Haha there is no denying music sets the mood and I agree on the soundtracks. Phantom of the Opera, Game soundtracks and Disney does it for me haha. Then again, sometimes when I'm writing, a song will just be begged to be played, something weird and wonderful. Recently I can only write to songs with no words, which really annoys everyone around me. They hate classical music...

DesertRoseFallen They hate classical music... BLASPHEMY! Classical is amazing! It's so simple it's got its own elegant charm! You have the introduction, the exposition which sets the them, the development where things get interesting and oh-so-fun to play, and the recapitulatioin where you put it all back together again and marvel at its beauty! You can't hate something so dynamic yet so simple, damn it! *deep breath* Did I ever mention I used to be a music major? sweatdrop

I failed music so I didn't take it on for my final years in High School. We had crap teachers. I used to sing for our school plays and that was as musical as I got.
But yes, classical is amazing and I love it when I find that one piece. One of my favourites is Zanarkand from Final Fantasy X, such a touching piece of music. I'm really into Phantom of the Opera now though hahaha.

Words take away from the music half the time anyway! And I'm kind of a sucker for Forever Rachel from FFVI. And the one part of the finale music where they combine the themes of Locke and Celes. And Father and Son from MGS4.

If Danny Elfman wrote it, it has probably been background music at some point. If it is a Disney movie soundtrack, same thing. If I feel like listening to a band, I usually have it down to background noise levels so I can better concentrate on my writing.

The score to Edward Scissorhands is a personal favorite.

Haha I prefer the later versions of the Final Fantasy music, I loved Crisis Core's soundtrack, yum, especially One Winged Angel metal version xD

I hardly ever listen to music--in the car, sometimes, but other than that I just don't feel inclined to put it on. Definitely not when I'm writing, it would be distracting.
It's not even that I dislike music. I guess I just like things being quiet most of the time. xp
My younger sister will play video games, have the TV on, and listen to music on her phone all at once. Or read while watching TV, or watch anime while listening to music. I think if she ever becomes interested in writing she'll definitely be the type of writer who has to have music on all the time.

may i never...
It depends on my mood. I don't have set "writing" music, but I love to have music playing when I write. I get less distracted if I have constant noise in the background. Does that make any sense? Haha.
...be perfect.

I listen to rock and goth music, most of my writing is action, up beat to dramatic and sad. I use music to help me with everything, the beat helps me keep my fingers typing on the keys and the noise blocks out my loud house.
