A small amount of research goes a long way.
1. In folklore... vampires were like zombies. Zombies who, instead of wanting brains, wants to shred you apart and drink your blood. They didn't talk to you, enjoy your company... they just wanted to kill you. Hell maybe they'd even rape you if you were lucky enough *sarcasm*
2. Speaking of blood... one theory suggest that vampires "crave" it as they cannot produce their own source of physical/psychic energy. The energy that comes from human blood is packed with it, depending on the health of the human. Thus... FAKE BLOOD WOULD NOT SATISFY THIS CRAVING. *coughTBcough* This also explains why animal blood does not work as well, due to the fact that animals have a lesser energy production.
Thoughts?

Interestingly enough people who were thought to be 'Vampires' in history are thought to actually be people suffering from an iron deficiency or to be diabetic. Which would sort of being in the same vein as wanting human blood because you cannot produce your own.
Though as far as nutritional value human blood is crap. It has nothing of value in it (besides maybe iron) so I don't understand how a 'Vampire' could actually function or survive on blood consumption alone. If you look at it without any super-power aspects tied into it a zombie has the advantage; they're eating the parts of the body that would allow them to survive much longer. A Vampire would probably die of malnutrition faster than a zombie. (Hmmm...)
I love the technical aspect of Vampire folklore. XD

True Blood and Twilight are both full of bullcrap, in my opinion.
I believe that vampires can drink human blood and ONLY human blood. I believe this because vampires are anthropods and need the human DNA/bloodcells. I also believe that vampires would have to eat food in addition due to the lack of nutrition in blood... or the bodies of the people they drain.

Large amounts of ANYTHING is bad technically. But I doubt consuming lots of blood would do anything serious other than maybe give you an upset stomach from the iron in it. If you tried to live off of it you'd probably die after awhile though. If not from the lack of nutrients then from blocked bowels and digestive problems caused by the iron in the blood you are consuming.

XD Well those problems would be for humans drinking blood, technically vampires are no longer humans. But in the superstitions and folklore you can still see why vampires would need the blood of humans to live. Blood is what keeps us alive, lose too much of it and you'll die. Also, when food is digested the nutrients from the food enter the blood stream through the villi in the small intestines and the blood carries nutrients, amino acids and wastes to and from all the muscles, organs, etc. So for the nutritional value of blood, it's carrying iron, glucose, water, amino acids, fatty acids, oxygen, hormones etc. Everything you'd get out of food necessary for living (water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and various minerals) needs to go through the blood stream in order to be put to use for bodily functions, and this means it also carries the body's wastes as well such as urine, CO 2 and other wastes. I wouldn't say that blood has zero nutritional value, but it would have little. I would think that if someone were to digest it that at least some the nutrients already dissolved into it should be able to enter through the villi again into their own blood stream. The wastes carried by the blood would not exactly be healthy for anyone and the excess of iron would probably have an effect. I'm not sure what the ingestion of the platelets or white blood cells and hemoglobin would do but they could also be broken apart during the chemical digestion processes. Sorry if this is repetitive or pointless, I had a biology book with a chapter on blood on hand and saying that it had no nutritional value didn't make sense to me since it is what transports the nutrients.

Kind of makes me wonder...if a Vampire drinks the blood of a person infected with a blood borne disease like HIV would they infect themselves in the process? Or could a werewolf contract rabies and other diseases that normally affect canines such as heartworms? The one thing that gets me is when people try to dismiss technical stuff like this with the 'Oh they're not human' excuse. Vampires=undead HUMAN. Yes they're 'undead' but they still have all of the biological qualities a human being would. It's not like they fell out of a spaceship and came from another world. If they did they're the worst aliens since that 'Species' chick.

The question is most likely why is it that their needs differ, something about them would have to change.

The Unholy Shadow As far as vampires talking goes, I figured their good looks were meant for hunting. SEDUCE their prey and then nom nom nom. Hard to seduce someone without talking to them first.
Ω In folklore, vampires were also described as bloated; or even shriveled, wrinkly and brown. They were dead bodies, not preserved ones.

I love the first point. I wish more did that. Makes me feel good that all of mine would rather eat you than have a simple conversation. Or snap your neck for the fun of it. Let alone this love crap. Unless it's with each other.
And that is true, about their looks. I would assume it's a lot less hassle to just charm your victims into a dark alley or forest or such. Instead of causing a scene and possibly getting people out of their houses to fight back.
