Normally I wouldn't have objected to it either (she's the type who tends to latch onto anything popular and so long as she leaves me alone I could care less) but...she's ten.

TEN!

And neither of her parents nor my own parents can comprehend why I am so pissed off about the matter. Apparently they see absolutely nothing wrong with allowing a ten year old girl to read those books. And even after I mentioned it's riddled with mentions of sex they STILL think it's okay.

I also saw a mother buying Twilight for her 7-9 year old daughter the other day at my local bookstore. What is wrong with these parents? gonk

Maybe they've read Twilight and it destroyed their brain cells?

Brainwashing. It was all brainwashing. That girl is evil, and clearly, Edwart Mullen has taken over their brains.

If I ever have kids, I am SO going to teach them from a young age that you don't have to like what's popular.

OK, she's 10. Why the hell is she reading a book filled with rape, ***** and a weird-a** pregnancy with no logic behind it? If I were to have kids, I'd never let them read a book which teaches them that marrying a guy only for sex is OK, and you should commit suicide if he breaks up with you. That's the main concern I have with people reading Twilight at such a young age. The book I know is aimed at TEENAGE GIRLS. Not someone who is too young to even consider having sex anyway.

Not even that, a ten year old isn't always knowledgeable of fantasy vs reality. And in this case neither of her parents are willing to sit her down and explain that the series is not a genuine example of 'love'. I could understand if she was mature and what-not but she isn't. And I've NEVER seen a 7-9 year old who is ready to read a book with sex in it, even if it's very vague. I really do not understand why a mother would do that to her child but I suppose it's because they don't read the series themselves and just hand it over to silence the child. Kind of like how parents will give their kids Grand Theft Auto while being unaware of the violence in it.

Perhaps you need to read to them the violent gory birth scene of Renessmsnasahasseemapetilon.

My internship is temporarily at the school library... The librarian won't let middle or elementary school kids take out a Twilight book without a note from their parents. I like her.

Ugh. It's not even the sexual parts that I have a problem with. It's the fact that girls that young are reading about a borderline, subtly abusive relationship. That they're bascially being fed the idea that if your boyfriend acts like Edward, he's not only loving, he's bloody perfect.

I know I was raised with a very firm line of what's fiction and reality, but some girls don't have that definition in their lives at that age. And they're very impressionable, even the subtle can shape their psyche and what they view as ok or romantic.

I wouldn't let my girl read Twilight at age 10. I'd give her solid reasons as to WHY, otherwise she'd pick it up anyway just as rebellion, but I'd at least educate my daughter.

At the very least, Twilight can be used as an example of what NOT to look for in a relationship or a man. And that may be a valuable lesson in and of itself.

Especially in the whole idea of fantasy vs reality, Twilight does not teach morals at all. This is what a 7 or 9 year old should pick up when reading, so they can connect it to real life. So they're just setting themselves up for the wrong idea of love, just as long as it's like Bella and Edward, they're satisfied. I actually feel sorry for what they're setting themselves up for.

The second point is that when I was in primary school (the Australian equivalent of elementary school), our school library had no books which even gave the subtle mention of sex, but dealt with different ideals, which is what a 7-9 year old should be reading anyway. If I ever were to have kids, I would make sure to investigate what they were studying before they reach the age where they can part fiction from reality, so they understand that what they see is not neccessarily what they should do.

If I have kids, I'll train them to sing and swarm debt collectors like a murder of hungry crows.

So Idiot, I'm sure by now you mentioned to her parents that Twilight promotes ***** and spousal abuse?

I'd love to see the reactions of her parents. Then again, if her mother is a Twihard, it'd probably have no strength. Because, that's just how they think.
