So, I was traipsing about the interweb earlier today and stumbled upon this interesting little article (Click Here) and was intrigued. Mind you I had several feather ruffled by the suggestion that Female steampunk Personas aren't fleshed out or are picked at random, the principle idea was interesting and so I figured I'd pop by to ask you chaps what you thought of it and to ask the question: What do you think the definitive scent of steampunk is?

I personally like to imagine a blend of pomegranates, old books and the smell of a hot steamengine... but that's jsut me ^_Q

Coal dust and smoke and oil and dirty air. Smog full of soot from the factories and vehicles.

Good heavens, they don't just suggest such inequity, they outright state such. Quite the affront, I daresay. Someone certainly seems not to have their cogs aligned properly, I'll say that much!

EDIT: To me, perhaps the smell of warm metal, old leather, and...lilacs. Don't ask me why, that's merely the opinion of a mad rambler.

I think it would depend on your character.
For me (an adventuress), it would be animal skin, sand, leather, with a touch of formaldehyde.

((I have to agree about what he mentions about women. Most female steampunks I've seen are more like "steamsluts" who dropped fresh out of the goth scene...))

I'm from 'The Goth Scene'(still am) if you look at it technically, does that really matter? I don't think I'm a "SteamSlut" just because I'm expanding my interests.

I think that it would smell of warm leather, leather polish and engine oil.

Lilacs and engine grease.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 17, 2010 7:31 pm

Everybody's pretty much summed it up already:

*Burning coal and smoke
*Hot engine grease
*Tea of all assortments, herbs too
*Leather
*Metallic odors/aftertastes

Plus a few of my own:

*Burning anything
*Rotting/uncured wood
*Wood fresh off the mill/saw (article mentioned it)
*Dampness (that smell from humidity, steam, and standing water)
*Steamed meat (Two birds, one stove, right?)
*Stews, pies, and other old-fashioned "throw it all in" comfort foods
*Tobacco (article mentioned it too, not my preference though)
*Licorice (it just seems appropriate)
*Liquor... Can't have sober airship pirates, now, can we?

Mmmm, smell is such a deeply psychological sensation. I can practically smell all of these right now.

This thread is so wonderfully inspiring.
Copper.
No idea why, because that's the same scent I associate with zombies.
Oh, and leather, to a lesser extent. Tobacco smoke too, how could I forget that.
