Hi, I've just been yelled by my father because I was listening to music, and he has just told me that listening to music is haram. Now this isn't music with a lot of swearing, it's like political rock and stuff like that (He listens to plenty of music himself, by the way, but he listens to sami yusuf, and stuff). Now, I would like to ask, Is music haram?

This is something you really have to use your own judgment on. Some people think music has to be a certain kind, some think all music is Haram, no matter what kind, and others think it's not Haram at all. Personally, I think music is fine as long as it's not something with a negative message. I listen to all genres of music, but I exclude music glorifying violence, degrading women, having pointlessly explicit lyrics, etc.

That's just me though. You should go with what feel like the right thing to you.

Concerning your family situation, your father is a douche.

If music is haram, why Muslims sings? Why Muslims create songs? Why Muslims play a lot of musics?

If he say it's haram, ask him, what verse in the Qur'an says it is haram. Or what hadith that doesn't allow us to hear music.

Very true sister! And I like to listen to music as well as Nasheeds!
I have also seen many Scholars who say its haram, or its okay...I think in the end, Allah (swt) gave us such talent (especially in music), why not use it?

Assalamualaykum...well I had to come here and inform from what I know. It's true and it's sad that many things non-Muslims do envelope the world so much so, that even Muslims can't live without it and it's hard for them to do so. No it's not about any of our personal opinions, it's the Will of Allah (swt) and the command of His final Messenger Prophet Muhammad (saw) that is really important to us.

So as far as I know no type of music is allowed in Islam. Any song that consists of music, even Islamic songs is haraam. The only musical instrument allowed is the daff...a type of drum that is used with an open end (you'll see them being used in the Arab countries). Anyways and to say it's a talent and so why not it be allowable, for the sake of argument, even very advanced thieves have amazing talents for stealing, does it mean robbery is allowed? No, however this world is a test, and what really matters is how we use what Allah (swt) Has given us. For instance you can use your voice to sing Islamic Nasheeds or songs without the musical instruments, and that is encouraged in Islam, Alhamdulillah. Music is said to alter the brain waves and makes people addicted to it, so yea I beg to differ with all the previous comments made here, for me I only choose to tell the Truth to the best of my knowledge Insha'Allah, and not win a popularity contest or "go with the flow".

Here is a hadith that I heard of before, Alhamdulillah, but now I can post it here:

The Prophet (peace be on him) warned of a severe punishment for people who sing or listen to singing in such a situation when he said, Some people of my Ummah will drink wine, calling it by another name, while they listen to singers accompanied by musical instruments. Allah will cause the earth to swallow them and will turn some of them into monkeys and swine. (Reported by Ibn Majah.)

This is a little further explanation I found on an Islamic site, where they try to make it more clear as to what the Hadeeth means,

This does not mean that they will be physically transformed into the bodies and outward form of monkeys and swine but rather in heart and soul, carrying the heart of a monkey and the soul of a pig in their human bodies.

I personally have heard from many Authenic sources, however, I found this very important talk by the well renowned Islamic speaker, Dr. Zakir Naik, the best thing I like about him, you can't refute him when he gives Authentic references from the Qur'an and Sahih Hadith, because then you will be going against Islam itself. Here's the link smile :

There are many others, just be neutral and have the sincere intention of finding the Truth, and Insha'Allah you'll come up with some Authentic information on Islam about that.

Assalamualaykum smile

Well i listen to music myself, well most of my family does. But isn't it said that music distracts one from prayer or something like that? Well that is what my mom told me...But she doesn't really mind, even when you watch Indian Movies, or those musicals...especially Indian movies songs pop up a lot. But since i come from an Indian background music is part of entertainment culture.

My parents love those old classical songs, which sound like wailing and moaning to me.
Well what do i know about poetry?

So why am i rambling about something random again?
Random fact-Today it actually snowed in Texas! it was fun!

If committing adultery/sex out of marriage is haram, why do some muslims do it? If alcohol is haram, why do some muslims drink it? If smoking is haram, why do some muslims smoke? If prayer is obligatory, why do some muslims not pray?

We are a long way away from being perfect, no one can be. We do wrong things all the time. The behaviour of muslims is not necessarily Islam.

I also think we shouldn't be insulting parents, I don't think it's fitting behaviour.

As for the topic of music, there is a general consensus among a number of scholars that music is indeed haram. There are other scholars who say that, as long as the content is not against Islam, it is permissible. This question doesn't have a set answer.

As for me, I do listen to music, although not much. I do feel that it can be distracting, and you could spend that time listening to or reading Qur'an, for example. I suppose if you do listen or not depends on personal judgement. If it's leading you to delay/miss prayer or miss out on things you should be doing, then of course it's not good.

Musical Instruments are haraam. Singing is not. So Nasheeds that are just singing such as Yusuf Islam and others are fine.
