The first candidates to arrive were stirring with excitement, others in despair at the desert that was now home. Most stayed outside to learn more about their new weyrwoman Favan and her gold Cheoth. Those two were recieving quite a welcome party that he just didn't want to be part of. He preferred to let them handle themselves. Instead he chose to enter his new mountain home and find the candidate barracks. He was dying to see if this place were as crowded as Ista. To have his own bed would be such a blessing! Somewhere his flitt egg would be safe.

A couple candidates followed his lead, he looked around for one to talk to. Anyone that shared the same experience and understood why he was so awed and full of wonder. A girl caught his attention, he sidled up beside her, still looking for the candidate rooms. "Isn't this all amazing?" He asked, smiling down at her.

Allende was, at first, a little startled to be addressed so abruptly, but since she agreed whole-heartedly with the younger boy's sentiment, she nodded. Looking over at him, she noted absently that he was an average enough lad with the obvious signs of someone who lived an active lifestyle. Not too surprising, given where he had just come from, (she had been subjected to those same labor intensive chores too! ) so Alle neatly filed away her casual observations for future reference.

"I'd say!" She replied, casting her eyes around as they continued to walk down the corridor. "I'll admit, I was just getting used to Ista, but how could I say 'no' to traveling to a new Weyr given the conditions on the island." The last was said cheerfully, without the twinge of disgust it would have held a sevenday before. Like many others, Allende had been increasingly disturbed by the rapid decline, and while she had initially balked at the notion of leaving a place she had only been at for a single Turn... hadn't her younger days been spent dreaming about traveling to new places?

"My name is Allende by the way, what is yours?"

A soft chuckle came from a tall, dark young woman and Dayo greeted the younger candidates, her expression analytical. The even taller, well-muscled dark man behind her, carrying a fair number of bags, had a relaxed smile to match.

"Brave of you both to come along, what a surprise, no?"

The heat didn't seem to bother the two in the slightest and while their personalities didn't exactly match Favan or some of the current Igen Weyr leaders, but they liked to take things as they went.

Gakere, speaking up in his rumbling, low voice, slowed his steps, gesturing down one of the sandy halls. "They mentioned that the available lodging was down this way." Briefly setting down a bag, he held out a large hand politely to Allende first, obviously a gentleman, sending Arolon a nod.

"Well met, young lady. I couldn't help but overhear your name. Allende? I am Gakere, and my lovely companion is Dayo."

It was interesting to see such a tall young woman, of course, she was shorter than the dark man, but much taller than the boy.

"A pleasure," was Dayo's silky comment.

"And my name is Arolon"

He added in after Gakere finished his own introductions. He nodded back in greeting. "Well met." Good someone knew where their rooms were, he had been prepared to explore until he found them.

He was a little surprised at the older candidates, usually around their age they either left or became too old to stand. He wondered if he would have to wait that long to impress. Their determination to be dragonriders rivalled his own.

"I see a lot of promise in our new home." He commented as a way to start a conversation with them all. He let Gakere lead the way.

Taking the big man's hand gingerly when it was offered, Allende smiled up at him and at his striking companion. "It is a pleasure too meet all of you!" She replied, offering another smile for Arolon and a quick shifting of her shoulder satchel as she turned to peer in the direction they were already headed.

"Promises are promises until we actually see our accommodations, yes?" She offered lightly, remembering the sleeping rotation she had worked out with her former roommates at Ista. "Hopefully there will be enough beds to go around." She couldn't help feeling a hint of hope, however. Igen was a trifle larger then Ista (or so she had surmised while aloft ) and hopefully the halls would be less crowded, and the candidates less eager to brave the Turns of living in a desert.

Speaking of which...

"I wonder what happens in a sandstorm." She mused aloud, once again looking around with avid curiosity. The ancient volcano that housed Igen Weyr had the interesting stone patterns that indicated wind erosion, but Alle was not entirely sure what such striations meant. "Are any of you from this region originally?" She added hastily, realizing a moment too late that her line of reasoning (and likewise questioning) was a bit backwards.

"During the storms and heatwaves, all but the strongest and bravest riders must hole up within these strong walls, I'd imagine." Gakere's bright, wide smile was gentle as he responded. The man had traveled quite a bit, though he'd yet to stay at this particular weyr.

It was interesting, the assumptions Arolon made without asking. The young woman was a journeyman farmcrafter, who had been searched while delivering to Ista Weyr, she would not be heartbroken if she failed to impress after two standings.

Shaking her head once in response, the collected Dayo came to a halt, gesturing to the spit in halls before them. "No, Gakere and I both hail from Nerat Hold, though he has traveled much further than I in his studies. We are, however, quite accustomed to hot weather." A slow, steady smile was shared between the two.

"Here seems to be the break off between male and female quarters." A brief gesture. "Our guide mentioned that women were that way."

Gakere, of course, would be carrying some of Dayo's things to her rooms. Turning to the other female, she raised her brows. "Perhaps we should share? We've already begun to become acquainted and who knows who else may take the second bunk, otherwise."

Arolon shrugged his shoulders at Allende. "They'd know more than me, I grew up at Ista. Never been around this region before." He answered honestly.

He'd learn all he could here though. He would need to become a dragonrider that could 'between' anywhere before he could catch up to Dayo and Gakere in knowledge about different places around Pern.

Coming upon the split between the male and female quarters he heard Dayo suggest becoming Allende's roommate. Noticing all the bags Gakere carried he guessed that some of them were probably Dayo's and that he'd help her get situated first.

"I'll help out too." He decided out loud. He didn't want to separate from his fellow candidates just yet, besides it was the right thing to do. After they got the girls situated Arolon and Gakere could find their own room and finally he could tend to his fire lizard egg.

"Heat waves...?" Obviously, Alle hadn't thought a desert could get any hotter then it already was. Mulling this concept over as the group continued down the corridor, she looked up again when they stopped and Dayo motioned towards the woman's side.

With nothing immediately obvious about the state of the rooms, Allende considered Dayo's proposition carefully. Before her friend Illabel had started sharing a room with her, Allende had been stuck with three other girls who had little in the way of humor. Polite was a good word to describe them, along with self possessed. Back then, she had thought it was just their age group, until Illabel had shown up. Leaving Ista had meant leaving her friend behind, and truth be told, Alle was loathe to enter a new situation with roommates she could barely talk too...

Glancing at Dayo, she wasn't sure whether the older girl was always so calm and collected, but her obvious friendship with Gakere led Alle to believe that rooming with her might be alright.

"That is probably true. There were certainly some interesting roommates to be had, back at Ista." She said, grinning as she remembered a particularly loud argument she had heard emanating from the boy's side one night. "If you don't mind an occasional firelizard visitor, then I'd be happy to room with you Dayo." She meant her own 'lizard Ranger, but she supposed Illabel's Bartan would be showing up more often then her own wandering brown.

Cue awkward entrance, the little brown abruptly burst out of between with a squawk and a dive into Alle's wispy blond hair. He'd been a part of her life for a few sevendays now, so Allende did not so much as flinch when the young firelizard scrambled over to her shoulder, keeping some of her hair draped around his body. Reaching up, she scratched along his offered eye ridges absently as she smiled with a nod of gratitude for Arolon's offer of help.

"Perhaps once we are all situated, we should explore a bit and find the dining area?"

Dayo was, in fact, not very excitable. Growing up with six younger siblings, as well as all the children of the nearby families, she'd learned to take things in stride, and tended to operate on a more relaxed level than most Candidates. Gakere was the same, probably for similar reasons. That, along with the quiet confidence of knowing a craft made for a very grounded young woman.

That wasn't to say she wasn't good-natured, or that she didn't have a sense of humor, she simply lacked the drama of most teenage girls.

Entering the room, she briefly glanced over as Ranger appeared, greeting the little creature as she continued to dust off a shelf. Sand, everywhere it seemed! "What a handsome fellow you have there. No, I have no issues with firelizards."

A smile as Gakere set her things down on the side of the room the dark-skinned woman in. His toothy grin came in answer, which he turned to the other two in the room.

"Yes, I could definitely eat." One of his favorite things about going to new places was discovering what food was particular to the region.

"I'll wait to set up my room until tonight, if you would like us all to stop by the male quarters before we go in search of the dining hall." Dayo's gaze was directed to Arolon, making the subject of her statement clear.

Arolon smiled at the fire lizard, wondering what his would look like when it hatched. Right before he could tell them about his flitt egg they started talking again. He wouldn't be rude and interrupt. Oh well, he'd tell them later. Then again, why would they care?

Dining Hall? Oh, food sounded good. He'd been too excited to eat anything this morning. He wondered how different their food was here, probably no seafood but in a less crowded weyr he'd bet the food was better!

"Yes please, just got to set this sack down in my room." A room. He had a room. How cool was that? Before he only got to sleep on the floor! Which meant he would have a nice bed too! He was beyond happy enough to escape the overcrowding.

Allende was relieved that she wouldn't be parting company with her fellows from Ista anytime soon. Dinner time had always been a little stressful, but that was when she had been working at Ista. She hadn't the foggiest notion of what the Dining Hall would be like here at Igen, but having some company for the first trip before they all received their individual assignments would be a good start!

Setting her own satchel down on one of the beds, she eyed the length of the mattress appraisingly, noting with pleasure that her feet might not hang off the end for once! Up on her shoulder, Ranger picked up her good mood and trilled, following her line of sight he scurried to the edge of her shoulder and fluttered down to the bed, sniffing curiously. Stifling a chuckle, Alle gave the brown a little pat before picking him up around his middle and cradling him to her chest, turning to Dayo and the others. "To the boy's quarters then! I don't know about you two" she paused, grinning at Dayo and Arolon since Gakere had already mentioned wanting to eat, "but I am starving!" She finished, heading for the door after setting Ranger back on her shoulder.

"Can't wait to see what the food's like here."

Arolon commented, leading the way back to the guy's side of the barracks. Checking a few rooms he finally found an empty one and walked in. He randomly picked a bed on the right and set his sack of clothes down on the pillow. He'd fold the clothes and put it away later. The egg should be warm and safe here for now.

He looked over at Gakere, wondering if this guy would choose his own room or choose to be roommates with him. He hoped they would be friends in time if he did choose to room with him.

"I'll pack later. I was too excited so I missed breakfast, I'm hungry too!"
