Alambri's Profile:
Approved by Sou

Name: Alambri
Age: Seventeen
Sex: Male
Orientation: Straight, but very flexible
Craft: Apprentice Smith
Rank: Candidate

Physical Description: Whippet thin with a shock of unruly cinnamon-brown hair, Alambri has a wide smile and a smattering of freckles across his nose. He is middling-tall, with long limbs that seem gawky because of his wiry build. Wide, strong hands are spattered with old scars from his time learning his father's trade in front of a forge, and it's clear his nose has been broken at least once. His eyes are a muddy shade of green, or maybe a pond-scum shade of brown; it's hard to say, but it doesn't often matter- most likely, they'll be crinkled with laughter and all but hidden behind thick lashes. His face is thin and angular, matching the rest of his narrow, pointy form, and his ears are a hair too large for his head. Not classically attractive, there is nonetheless a visible friendliness that tends to draw people in and encourage them to look past his ungainly appearance.

Personality: Alambri loves to laugh. He considers any hour that goes by without some sort of laughter a wasted one- he even smiles when he's asleep. His sense of humor isn't cruel, however, and he'll raise a right fuss if he thinks someone's being ill-treated. He blames his intense, over-friendly nature on coming from a family of smiths- “Anyone spending that much time near a forge can't help but be warm!” It is a particular passion of his to find individuals who are far more serious than he is, and pester them relentlessly- he rarely gives in until either they bend, and laugh, or they break, and hit him. He tends to take the latter response as 'fair enough', grinning and shaking it off, but anyone who makes the effort to truly anger him will find that beneath his relentless good cheer, he holds a wicked grudge. Once he's in a temper, he can be rash, prone to low blows and wicked pranks. Rather tender-hearted at the best of times, Alambri has a weakness for small children, and is always quick to provide a treat or play a game- even if it is far beneath his dignity. As such, they tend to flock to him, a fact which bothers him not at all.

Alambri is very social, because it's easiest for him to be cheerful around others- left to his own devices for too long, and he'll start to wax maudlin and become morose. Alambri's carefree attitude is occasionally problematic- if he personally doesn't see the point in something he's asked to do, he'll sometimes shrug it off as unimportant. That casual attitude toward responsibilities has gotten him into trouble- he's capable of buckling down and behaving, but he needs a certain amount of encouragement to make it happen and if he doesn't get it, he comes across as irresponsible or lazy. Once he's on task, however, he'll stick with it until it's done, or until he's done everything he can to get it there.

When it comes to his preferences, well, he considers himself straight, but there's very little evidence to prove one way or another. He likes girls well enough, very much enjoying a comely female figure and he will pose and posture and flirt relentlessly when one catches his eye. However, he's just as willing to flirt with other men, and has serious difficulty keeping his hands to himself no matter who he's talking to. He doesn't take such things very seriously, and it's likely that he'd be comfortable no matter what role or relationship he ended up in.

History: Bright and cheerful from a very young age (or, as his mother- with a sigh- always put it, “Born with a giggle and a grin, and never getting more serious,”) Alambri was always underfoot. He was inquisitive and intelligent, though he never showed much inclination to create or craft- he preferred taking things apart to see how they worked over putting them together. He was always excited when Traders or Harpers came through, spending as much time as he was permitted asking them questions. When he was ten, he started writing limericks, deciding that he wanted to be a Harper- his father rather firmly informed him that he would be doing no such thing. An unnecessary act, as with most of Alambri's passions, it only lasted a few weeks.

Alambri was supposed to have been a smith. His father was a smith, his mother was a smith, his grandparents were smiths, his siblings were smiths... Clearly it was destiny. When he was judged to be big enough to work in the smithy (rather than old enough- as the smallest in his family, he started late), his father started teaching him his trade. That was the precise point where Alambri's relationship with his father broke down- while he was by no means incapable, he was certainly not interested, and he had an unfortunate tendency to stand in exactly the wrong place when scale started flying. His father thought his lack of interest a problem to be cured with increased discipline and extra chores- Alambri found that distinctly unfair and did all he could to duck the additional work. It didn't help that Alambri didn't really hit his growth until he was nearly fifteen- he was a small, weedy child, and when he did grow, he sprang up seemingly overnight into a scrawny, gawky figure that seemed highly unsuitable for the job of pounding metal.

It was, quite honestly, a relief to him when Alambri was Searched at sixteen- his parents sent him off with well wishes and an only barely noticeable attitude of 'good riddance'. Alambri adjusted to life in the Weyr with startling alacrity, finding the work reasonable (better, at least, than slaving away in front of a forge) and the company a wonderful change- being the youngest of his male siblings, it was exciting to be around lads of his own age.

Pets: When he was younger, Alambri had a tendency to collect strays. Now that he's a Candidate, he'd love to acquire a flitt.

Other/Talents: Alambri has an eye for figuring out how things fit together, and has a strong memory for plans and layouts. His gawky build hides solid strength, and he picked up more skill in the forge than he ever let his father see.

Will this character be a candidate? Yes.

Picture: Nope, not as yet.

Relationships:

Journeyman Harper Vera: Nice girl, pretty eyes, good with delicate tools. Possessor of 'attack-flitt' Bell. Unsurprisingly, thus far Alambri likes her. He finds it funny that her mentor has apparently trained her flitt to chase away young men who try to have conversations with her, but he's willing to put up with a bit of pecking in the name of a friendly chat. She seems willing enough to listen to him chatter, so all is good in his book.
Overall impression so far: Positive/Friendly

Koios: Fellow candidate. Made the number one Alambri-handling mistake- fed Alambri. As far as Alambri is concerned, that makes Koios his new best friend.
Overall impression so far: Positive/Friendly

Roleplays: Candidate

[X]Three of a Kind: Vera, Bell, and Alambri.
Vera attempts to work on a flute, Bell attempts to distract from working on said flute, Alambri attempts to distract Bell, and Bell attempts to convince Alambri to go away. In the process, there is some conversation.

[X]Hello There, Friendly Opportunity: Koios and Alambri.
Alambri and Koios run into each other in the hall. Koios feeds Alambri and thus earns Alambri's eternal friendship.

[X]The Hatching: Horse Clutch: Most Everyone.
Alambri Impresses! To the first dragon out of the eggs, no less- an 'energetic' Brown nearly the size of a Bronze, responsible for several maulings. Clearly A'bri will have some apologies to make on behalf of his handsome Varth. (Pg 10/11 for Impression)

Brown Varth

User Image

Varth distinguished himself at his hatching by being the first to hatch. He also mauled several Candidates before he found Alambri.

The Akhal Teke

The Akhal-Teke, 'Ahalteke' in the Turkmen language, (pronounced [ahalˈtеkje]) is a breed of horse from Turkmenistan, where they are a national emblem.[1] They are noted for their speed and for endurance on long marches. These "golden-horses" are adapted to severe climatic conditions and are thought to be one of the oldest surviving horse breeds. There are currently about 3,500 Akhal-Tekes in the world, mostly in Turkmenistan and Russia, although they are also found throughout Europe, Australia and North America.

Russians fell in love with this breed and established a state stud farm. Many Akhal-Tekes were bred at the Tersk Stud in the northern Caucasus Mountains, and later moved with the head breeder Vladimir Petrovich Shamborant to the Dagestan Studfarm. [2] Most important breeders are Stuvropol Stud, Shael Stud, Chagorta, farms in Daghestan.

Hofvarpnir

In Norse mythology, Gná is a goddess who runs errands in other worlds for the goddess Frigg and rides the flying, sea-trodding horse Hófvarpnir (Old Norse "he who throws his hoofs about",[1] "hoof-thrower"[2] or "hoof kicker"[3]). Gná and Hófvarpnir are attested in the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. Scholarly theories have been proposed about Gná as a "goddess of fullness" and as potentially cognate to Fama from Roman mythology. Hófvarpnir and the eight-legged steed Sleipnir have been cited examples of transcendent horses in Norse mythology.

Brown Varth

Brown Varth gives everything he’s got every single time. An incredibly strong-willed brown, his large size and agile build do nothing but fuel the belief that he is every bit as good as those bronzes, and it is his life’s mission to prove it. Mission might be putting it lightly. It’s his obsession and he will not stop for anything to make his point. Ambitious, Varth will often go to any extreme to get what he wants, especially if he feels he deserves it the most.

The only thing that’s important to Varth as his reputation is his rider. His rider is the only one he will take advice from; he doesn’t seem to realize one is the loneliest number. Determined that bronzes and other browns are trying to keep him down, he tries to show them all up. Blues and greens don’t get his attention either, they’re just a waste of his valuable time. Time is something Varth feels he cannot afford to waste, being a brown means he’s got to work harder to fly a Queen, but by Farnath, he’s determined to do it. If there were ever a brown on Pern to fly a Queen, Varth is your man.

Larger than the average brown, Varth is built much sleeker. He’s quick and agile, not the workhorse the other browns are. He still has enough stamina to make it through the average Threadfall, but he needs to be careful not to overdo it. That’s something his rider needs to keep an eye on; left to his own devices, Varth will push himself too far. He only wants the best for himself and his rider, but he doesn’t grasp the concept of limits, not in the least. It’s something he needs to be taught, as well as respect for those who rank above him.

He’s an intelligent dragon, his plans to get himself to the top should be proof of that. Varth is not a vicious dragon, he’s just very confident and very forward. He’s more than happy to argue his point and show off in silly competitions, but physical violence is never something he’d resort to.

Why Me?

Varth was drawn to Alambri for his passion, but also for his sensible nature. Alambri needs to restrain this brown so he doesn't work himself into the ground, so his strong will is needed here. In turn, Varth will teach Alambri how to get what he wants; his aggressive nature makes it so that 'no' just simply isn't an answer.

Selecting A Good Anvil-
-Test ring, good anvil should ring like bell
-Good anvil rings brightly (can things ring darkly?)
-Large anvil=deeper ring (really. color me stunned)
-If anvil shatters, get different anvil
-Anvils are boring, seriously seriously seriously

User Image

Dunno why I'm bothering to write this down, it's not like I'll ever use it anyway. The odds of me ever buying an anvil aren't good enough for even a wherry-brained dimglow to bet on. Have I mentioned that anvils are boring?

I broke another hammer today. Haven't seen Father so angry since I told him I wanted to be a Harper. Apparently he doesn't understand how anyone can be so much of a deadglow as to break a hammer.

It's easier than you'd think.

User Image

Things to remember:
-Just 'cause it's black doesn't mean it's not still hot
-Offering Shavendi water from the quenching bucket is funny, but not worth the punishment
-Anvils are boring
-Really, really, really boring
-Seriously, who cares about a hunk of metal that doesn't ever move?
-Heating the bars to sunset orange instead of angry red makes it easier to twist 'em. Make for better circles that way.

I can't help but wonder exactly how many hinges one place needs. I mean, really. You'd think maybe a dozen, maybe two?

Nine. Dozen. Hinges.

stupid sharding little pieces, all need to fit together right.

User Image

I just found Darref's notebook... He has ten whole pages of poetry. Bad poetry. About Riyuse. Father would be so annoyed if he knew. Darref will be doing my chores for a week at least to keep me from saying anything.

User Image

I'm supposed to be working, but it's sharding hot and if I ever see another hinge in my life I think I'll explode. So this is more fun. There's supposed to be Traders coming through tomorrow, so maybe I'll be able to get some more scrap. Still don't see why Mother and Father both raise such a fuss about it- at least it gets me working, and I don't think the baubles are useless. That Trader girl liked 'em fine, anyway, and what else do they want them to do? They impress pretty girls and earn me enough marks to get more scrap and the occasional treat for Elreyn. She doesn't look a thing like Riyuse, but she's sweet as can be. Good company. She snuck over to watch me clean yesterday- why, I don't know, cleaning the fardling forge is boring- but she sat the whole while and talked and talked and talked... For seven turns, she sure knows a lot of words. More than I do. I hope her folks send her off to one of the Holds, she could be something.

...Wish my folks would send me off to one of the Holds. Maybe I could be something too.

User Image

Traders came through today! Got some scrap, have an idea for a gift for Elreyn. One of them had this sharding tiny little box that made music. Went out and played cards with them after dark, managed to win it from him. Took it apart, of course, to see how it worked- it's got a little handle, and little metal tines, and when you turn the handle, raised dots on the bar inside run past the tines and chime.

Going to try and make one for her for her naming day.

User Image

Got the tines to make the sounds I want. Made the little frame. So far, so good.

User Image

Sharding stupid worthless fardling hunk of metal GARBAGE!

User Image

Yesterday's work could have gone better.

User Image

Started over. Again. Think I have it right this time. Don't have too long before El's naming day, but I'm going to make it work. She's going to have her sharding gift, and it is going to play that sharding stupid song she likes, and it is sharding well going to make her smile, or so help me I will flatten this sharding stupid project until it can be used for-

for something thin. Very thin. Just can't think of what right now.

User Image

HA I'M NOT COMPLETELY USELESS IT WORKS AND ITS DONE!

User Image

El was thrilled. Which is good, because she left yesterday for a Hold. She cried, poor thing.

...I'm going to miss her.
