Name: Alambri
Age: Seventeen
Sex: Male
Orientation: Straight, but very flexible
Craft: Apprentice Smith
Rank: Candidate
Physical Description: Whippet thin with a shock of unruly cinnamon-brown hair, Alambri has a wide smile and a smattering of freckles across his nose. He is middling-tall, with long limbs that seem gawky because of his wiry build. Wide, strong hands are spattered with old scars from his time learning his father's trade in front of a forge, and it's clear his nose has been broken at least once. His eyes are a muddy shade of green, or maybe a pond-scum shade of brown; it's hard to say, but it doesn't often matter- most likely, they'll be crinkled with laughter and all but hidden behind thick lashes. His face is thin and angular, matching the rest of his narrow, pointy form, and his ears are a hair too large for his head. Not classically attractive, there is nonetheless a visible friendliness that tends to draw people in and encourage them to look past his ungainly appearance.
Personality: Alambri loves to laugh. He considers any hour that goes by without some sort of laughter a wasted one- he even smiles when he's asleep. His sense of humor isn't cruel, however, and he'll raise a right fuss if he thinks someone's being ill-treated. He blames his intense, over-friendly nature on coming from a family of smiths- “Anyone spending that much time near a forge can't help but be warm!” It is a particular passion of his to find individuals who are far more serious than he is, and pester them relentlessly- he rarely gives in until either they bend, and laugh, or they break, and hit him. He tends to take the latter response as 'fair enough', grinning and shaking it off, but anyone who makes the effort to truly anger him will find that beneath his relentless good cheer, he holds a wicked grudge. Once he's in a temper, he can be rash, prone to low blows and wicked pranks. Rather tender-hearted at the best of times, Alambri has a weakness for small children, and is always quick to provide a treat or play a game- even if it is far beneath his dignity. As such, they tend to flock to him, a fact which bothers him not at all.
Alambri is very social, because it's easiest for him to be cheerful around others- left to his own devices for too long, and he'll start to wax maudlin and become morose. Alambri's carefree attitude is occasionally problematic- if he personally doesn't see the point in something he's asked to do, he'll sometimes shrug it off as unimportant. That casual attitude toward responsibilities has gotten him into trouble- he's capable of buckling down and behaving, but he needs a certain amount of encouragement to make it happen and if he doesn't get it, he comes across as irresponsible or lazy. Once he's on task, however, he'll stick with it until it's done, or until he's done everything he can to get it there.
When it comes to his preferences, well, he considers himself straight, but there's very little evidence to prove one way or another. He likes girls well enough, very much enjoying a comely female figure and he will pose and posture and flirt relentlessly when one catches his eye. However, he's just as willing to flirt with other men, and has serious difficulty keeping his hands to himself no matter who he's talking to. He doesn't take such things very seriously, and it's likely that he'd be comfortable no matter what role or relationship he ended up in.
History: Bright and cheerful from a very young age (or, as his mother- with a sigh- always put it, “Born with a giggle and a grin, and never getting more serious,”) Alambri was always underfoot. He was inquisitive and intelligent, though he never showed much inclination to create or craft- he preferred taking things apart to see how they worked over putting them together. He was always excited when Traders or Harpers came through, spending as much time as he was permitted asking them questions. When he was ten, he started writing limericks, deciding that he wanted to be a Harper- his father rather firmly informed him that he would be doing no such thing. An unnecessary act, as with most of Alambri's passions, it only lasted a few weeks.
Alambri was supposed to have been a smith. His father was a smith, his mother was a smith, his grandparents were smiths, his siblings were smiths... Clearly it was destiny. When he was judged to be big enough to work in the smithy (rather than old enough- as the smallest in his family, he started late), his father started teaching him his trade. That was the precise point where Alambri's relationship with his father broke down- while he was by no means incapable, he was certainly not interested, and he had an unfortunate tendency to stand in exactly the wrong place when scale started flying. His father thought his lack of interest a problem to be cured with increased discipline and extra chores- Alambri found that distinctly unfair and did all he could to duck the additional work. It didn't help that Alambri didn't really hit his growth until he was nearly fifteen- he was a small, weedy child, and when he did grow, he sprang up seemingly overnight into a scrawny, gawky figure that seemed highly unsuitable for the job of pounding metal.
It was, quite honestly, a relief to him when Alambri was Searched at sixteen- his parents sent him off with well wishes and an only barely noticeable attitude of 'good riddance'. Alambri adjusted to life in the Weyr with startling alacrity, finding the work reasonable (better, at least, than slaving away in front of a forge) and the company a wonderful change- being the youngest of his male siblings, it was exciting to be around lads of his own age.
Pets: When he was younger, Alambri had a tendency to collect strays. Now that he's a Candidate, he'd love to acquire a flitt.
Other/Talents: Alambri has an eye for figuring out how things fit together, and has a strong memory for plans and layouts. His gawky build hides solid strength, and he picked up more skill in the forge than he ever let his father see.
Will this character be a candidate? Yes.
Picture: Nope, not as yet.
