Okay so. I came across this letter that Mercedes Lackey wrote to try to stop her most rabid fans from being so... rabid.
It's long, but let me sum it up for you: "Stop acting like crazies. My books are fantasy and nothing more. You are not a Guardian. SHUT UP."
I've read some of her work. It's... enh. But you know, I have a lot of respect for her as an author, having read this.
She had some absolutely insane fans and she actually took the time to tell them to knock it the ******** off. How cool is that?
And I thought... with all the havoc that Twilight fans wreak, the way so many of them actually go out of their way to hurt people who diss the series, it'd give me a teensy bit of respect for SMeyer if she wrote something like that. A "SHUT UP, FANS" letter.
Or if she just, you know, flat out apologized for writing such a massive piece of fail and admitted it was full of crappy morals that young girls should not be taking to heart... but I think that's probably asking waaay too much.
It wouldn't stop everyone, but damn, that'd give me a little respect for her.
What do you think, guys? What should SMeyer do? Do you think she has a responsibility to do something about the lunacy her book has sparked?

I bet she would deny everything. Who wants to hear that their novels lead to hospitals and lawsuits? No, she would never apologize, not that she's intelligent but really, she's like a leech and a blind and deaf one at that. Also, if she admitted to it, you know how many people would smarten up? It would be one hell of a suit between freedom of speech and political correctness.
There is going to be much b*tching and moaning about the novels leaving MANY parents and intelligent people to heavily criticize Meyer. At the very least, if it ever came to that, there would be a 'public apology' because hell, you can't ban a person or stop them from expressing themselves.
As for responsibility, yes she wrote the book, she did not however, tell people or rather force them to fall in love with it/ act out because of it. She, on a personal level, is not responsible for the acts of those who choose to go out of their way and go nuts over the book. However, she IS responsible for her own work and needs to actually see what is going on around her. She needs to smarten up and at the very least REALIZE WHAT MAYHEM her book has brought and the sort of issues that have ensued with both the production of the later novels and movies.

I can see her loving the attention, lonely broad, but she really should take some control.
Then again, people should have control over themselves to start with.
Both sides are idiots and should not reproduce ninja EVER!

Of course she needs to recognize her responsibility. And I think it was very responsible for this other author to mention it exclusively to her. Meyer needs to assert that her books are not the new Bible or the cure for cancer or an excuse to hurt others. I'll respect her the day she does so.

Firebird had something important afterward, about a dead baby. I had no inkling on how perverse and demented--like those words do justice--that fans could be so. . . cruel. Losing a child over something as trivial as a fictitious creation is beyond even my imagining.

The problem with Meyer owning up, is that she probably won't.
Seeing as how she lives in a simplistic little world that is full of glitter and fairies, and this world is highly fortified with walls of ignorance monitored by Seth.
We'd probably have to wait until one of the victims' parents got outright pissed and straight up sued Meyer's a** for her to even try to confront the problem. Even then, she'd shove it off herself by saying it isn't her fault her books cause people to go apeshit(which is true), they're just jeaous and want some of her fortune, and being overall pissy.
It'd be like the Midnight Sun fit, but on a grander scale.
She does need to say something though. If I had fans and they acted this way, I'd CERTAINLY come forward and hose them down. Because it's unacceptable. I don't care WHAT fandom it is...Hell, I don't care if it's election season and you're in a heated argument about who the next president should be. You just don't beat people simply because they don't share your view on something!

Even though Meyer may not be directly linked on a personal level for the individuals that are crazy and such over the books that she wrote, she should take up the responsibility and write up a letter for her fans to calm down and to reinstate that her work is just fiction and therefore not real.
But Meyer doing such a thing? Not in a million years as I've heard she is rude and such and so the fame has gotten to her head and she sounds as she wishes to ignore her fans rather than acknowledge their wrongdoings.
