Name: Jaidev [J'dev if he Impresses]
Age: 17
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Bisexual [leaning more towards males]
Craft: Weavercraft
Rank: Apprentice

Physical Description: Jaidev's a fairly average-looking boy. He's not bad looking- just somewhat plain, if anything. He'll probably never quite achieve 'handsome' when he grows up, but rather stick to the side of 'cute'. He has light brown hair, straight and fine, the color of klah after it's had a few creams added to it. It's typically worn a little less than shoulder length, gathered back into a small ponytail.

He's got a light dusting of freckles across the bridge of his nose that fans out over his cheekbones, though they aren't terribly noticeable...until he blushes anyways, upon which they tend to pop out- much to his chagrin! Jaid has a lightly tanned complexion, though not from the sun- it's all natural. In fact, he tends to burn when exposed to too much sun as opposed to tanning darker. Finally, he has hazel green eyes, always wide with some sort of understanding or, conversely, anxiety.

Jaidev's a bit on the short side for a Pernese, standing only at 5'8 and 1/2, but sporting lanky proportions. Even with a growth spurt, it's likely he won't get much taller, though. He's a little skinny as well, not terribly muscular but certainly not emaciated either. He's not a waif of a boy though- he's slightly broad-shouldered and has strong hands. He's just not as built and stacked as much some others his age.

As far as manner of dress goes, Jaid tends to favor clothing made from light, breathable materials now that he's living in such a sunny, warm area. Colorwise, he favors earth tones as well as lighter and pastel colors. The earth tones he likes largely for appearance and color (he's never been one to want to stand out too much). The lighter colors he likes because they tend to absorb less heat and thus provide greater comfort. Plus, less heat - less sweating, and Jaid's never been overly fond of being all sweaty.

Personality: First thing that should be mentioned is that Jaid is actually more than a little scared of being a Rider. He finally decided to accept Candidacy after being Searched largely due to a dare put forth by a Weyrbrat (something along the lines that a Hold-born like him didn't have the stuff to be a Rider). He'd have been mostly content to stay working with the kitchen staff otherwise but peer pressure can be terribly persuasive at his age. Plus, his stubborn streak wouldn't let him back down so easily. Why throw away such an opportunity, after all?

But it's not heights that make him fearful of Impressing, it's the notion of death. He's afraid of losing his dragon and going insane as a result or dying himself and causing the death of his dragon in the process. The idea of Flightlust- and the notion of sex in general- also makes him terribly uneasy at times. But as fearful as he is, there is for him an undeniable draw to become a Rider, to gain respect, protect his planet and share a deep bond with a living creature- a bond he seems not to have been able to find anywhere else. It's that passion and appeal that helped keep him in Candidacy, the hope that someday he might achieve that goal that so many dreamed of but so few have met...

Jaidev can be a bit prude at times since he was born and raised in a Hold as opposed to a Weyr- getting used to everything has been a bit of a culture shock for the boy. He tends to be a little on the shy side initially but if you get to know him, he's not a bad kid at all. He's fairly devoted to his friends and despite being a little anxious, knows how to be brave in a pinch. He's generally a warm, caring type and can also be a bit of a 'mother-hen' to his friends, much to their chagrin at times. Also, once comfortable with a person or group, Jaid tends to be prone to cracking jokes. In fact, even when nervous he tends to laugh or joke here and there.

Jaid tends to have less-than-stellar self-esteem or confidence at times, but often attempts to hide this. In fact, he tends to be prone to hiding illness, unhappiness or injury as well so he doesn't burden others. He hates being a bother and he hates coming off as weak. Perhaps this compulsion can also be attributed to the fact it's such a detriment to be weak (after all, the weak on Pern don't often live all that long and if they do, they tend not to be all that successful or high-up, let alone Dragonriders).

Update: As of recent, it would seem that Jaidev's joining of the ILA has made the boy a bit more bold and outgoing. While it is unlikely the boy will become a social butterfly anytime soon, he's certainly less reserved and uneasy as of late. It seems that a little rebellion now and then can be a good thing...

History: Jaidev didn't lead the most spectacular life before being Searched. In fact, his life was rather average and dull. He was Hold-born to a family at Lemos Hold that was well-off socially, but not the top rung of the ladder at any rate. After he showed talents in Weavercraft, he was sent to the Crafthall where he spent some time as an apprentice. At first, the general escape from the Hold and the escape from looks he got for being less-than-heterosexual and manly seemed like a relief (it probably helped that he hid most of his personal feelings there, though). But Jaid never loved Weavercraft all that much, despite the fact that having adept hands and a good eye for color and design made him rather talented at it. In fact, he found it- along with apprenticeship- rather dull in practice. The thoughts of being confined to this trade for life started to make the boy feel unnerved and cornered.

He fled one night with a group of passing merchants heading out to Ista in a panic, desperate to escape to a Weyr. He hadn't entirely counted on Impressing or even being accepted into the Weyr, he'd merely been looking for a way out, a change of pace. Honestly, he didn't really think that move through.

He felt bad, abandoning his mentor and his duties, but the allure that Weyrs tended to be more tolerant of sexuality and so full of opportunity served as a strong draw for the boy and kept him from running back to the Hall. However, with no Search notice, the only way the boy could manage to stay was by taking up with the drudges. The Weyr was crowded and he was always busy and he was frequently exhausted, but at least the work at the Weyr was slightly less monotonous. Or maybe it only seemed that way to a boy who idolized the aspects of the Weyr. It probably helped that he didn't mind cooking as much, though he was recruited into setting tables and cleaning more than preparing food.

Not too long after working there, however, Jaid was inadvertently Searched by one of the dragons- though he didn't dive into Candidacy right off. This was largely due to his anxieties about being Threadscored, dying, Flightlust and such. It seemed that having the actual chance to become a Rider made him start to consider these things more seriously and less romantically. In the end, he only really joined Candidacy because of the aforementioned comment made by the Weyrbrat. He stayed, however, because had to prove he was more than some coddled child and coward who ran instead of facing responsibility- to both the weyrbrat and to himself.

Misc. Information:
Jai's afraid of bugs, especially of those with multiple legs. Tunnelsnakes don't bother him but Crawlers and other bugs? He'll scream like a girl. He is, however, fond of such things as Black Marshberries and music (particularly stringed instruments such as guitars and lutes, which he had been trying to learn as a hobby before he fled his Hold). Jaidev also has a nervous habit of scratching the back of his hands or chewing at his nails and cuticles when uneasy. He expresses talents in both Weavercraft and cooking, though he's more interested in the latter (even if he's better and more practiced at the former). He's more content to be a follower than a leader, due to aforementioned self-image issues. Fortunately, he's a good listener and takes orders fairly well. He gets along well enough with people (though he is a touch shy), but he just doesn't see himself being a big leader astride a Bronze or anything. He's reasonably intelligent but like most on Pern, though, he's not terrifically literate (he has basic skills at best) and will have to be further instructed at the Weyr.

Also noted is that Jaidev has stood to Impress a few times before, but failed in both attempts, which has disheartened him somewhat and left him unsure of whether he will ever Impress. The first time he stood, he was accidentally gouged by an excited Brown and bears a scar on his upper thigh from the encounter. This has caused him to be a little twitchy around bumbling dragonets and around the sands, but has caused no massive emotional trauma, fortunately.
