Mo was in her usual place that morning, waiting for Hesendek. Since girls weren't allowed into the boy's barracks – though she knew what other girls did she didn't see any reason why she shouldn't be allowed – she was forced to wait at the entrance. Her pose was typical of her nature, leaning back against the stone wall with her arms folded across her chest and a very dark look on her face. Fang perched neatly on her large shoulder, tail curled around her neck as it usually was. He had managed to acquire a little bit of meat from the dining hall and was making little happy noises as he ate it.

The young woman glanced down at the dirt floor, tapping at it idly with the toe of her boot. Where was that boy? Hesendek should definitely be up by now. She hoped he wasn't out there cavorting with the ladies. That thought made her scowl deepen. Oh he would be in big trouble if that's what he was doing. He had better just be oversleeping, that lazy burdenbeast. She'd give him a few more minutes and then she would go in. Or she would send Fang. Whatever she could get away with.

Sometimes Hesendek thought about avoiding Mo. He liked her, don't get him wrong, he liked her a lot. They grew up together, they apprenticed together; there were a lot of things that would only stay between them. But the fact of the matter was, Hesen was starting to wonder if maybe he was a little old for a shadow. Here was was, a candidate to stand at the Hatching, and Mo was still following him around to make sure he didn't get in trouble. Or hurt. He wasn't exactly sure which.

She was outside the barrack door with Fang though, no doubt.

Taking a deep breath, Hesendek exhaled slowly and adjusted the cloth fastened loosely around his neck before he headed out. He really shouldn't be thinking about this. They were friends.

As predicted, Mo was where she could always be found. Hesen leaned next to her and cracked a toothy grin. "Hey there, pretty miss," he drawled, eyes dancing as he gave her a playful shove. "Y'all waitin' fer me?"

Ah, there was the slacker.

Fang spotted him first, chirping excitedly and flapping over to land on Hesen's shoulder. Since his girl was such good friends with the boy he had decided he ought to be too. Besides, the boy had never treated him unkindly or tried to scare him off, not to mention he had a very nifty necktie. The flit's tail curled around Hesen's neck as he settled himself in a customary position. Now that he was settled, he could return to his food.

Gamoira glanced over at her friend's approach, snorting as his greeting. Still, her expression looked much gentler than usual as she reached over to ruffle his hair with one of her large hands. She may not be pretty, but it was always nice of Hesen to flatter her. It wasn't like both of them didn't know the truth, anyways. "Course we're waitin' for ye. Gotta stick together 'n all that. Ye eat yet?"

He was not a slacker! Hesendek much preferred the term 'thinker'.

The candidate smiled as Fang made a leap for his shoulder, settling happily around his necktie to finish his breakfast. He reached up to scratch the little blue gently, chuckling. He was so comfortable, and he was a very friendly flit. Hesendek never understood why Mo named him Fang...well, other than that she was Mo. And that was definitely something Mo would do.

"Yeah, yeah. Stickin' t'gether." Like glue, Hesendek thought wryly. "An' if I already eaten, dun y'all think th' mast'r would be sendin' me off t' do chores an' whatnot?" the apprentice teased. A master was a master, no matter who he was in charge of, and chores always, always, always came after meals. "Bu' we should hurry around. We dun wan' anyone thinkin' yer a slacker, Mo."

Ha. Mo, a slacker. Yeah right.

Mo was never the kind of girl you let name your animals. In fact, you probably shouldn't let her name anything you did want to have a name like "Killer". She was never a fan of names that were too nice or too pretty. Women who named their daughters after flowers, for example, were asking for their daughters to grow up into silly, thoughtless nobodies. Names had to reflect some of the character, or at least, some of the desired character. Fang had yet to live up to his name, but Mo could always hope.

At Hesendek's question, she simply shrugged. "Dunno. Mighta let ye go and get somethin' from yer room before ye had te werk." Though, knowing the Candidatemaster, it was doubtful she would let someone off so easily. But, it was Hesendek, whose charming smile won over just about everybody. You never knew about these things. At his comment about slacking, Mo snorted. "I ain't slackin', not most of the time anyway. An' if you wanna hurry, then we will. Not hurryin' my eatin' though." Mo did not rush meals.

Shoving her hands in her pockets she began making her way towards the dining hall. "Ye met with any of the candidates yet?"

"C'mon, then. We better get goin' if y'all wan' plen'y a time to eat." Hesendek stuck his tongue out and began walking. "A'sides, I think Fang might something else to eat, too." He looked down at the little flit and scratched his head again. He wasn't really sure who ever gave Mo a flit, he probably wouldn't have, if he were anyone else. Shards, Mo even scared him a little from time to time. But she was a right sweetheart, really.

"I've worked with a couple of 'em. Dunno 'em really, though. 'Cept La. We went t' the wine cellar together. She's right nice, La." He chuckled softly to himself and grinned. She was of no use in the wine cellar, but he liked her anyways. She had a nice nature about her. He had liked her quite a lot.

“Fang can get his own food if he’s hungry,” Mo replied stubbornly, eyeing the flit. He was decently trained, strongest in areas centered around keeping his hands to himself but weakest in terms of being baited by food. Not exactly the smartest flit around, he was very easily distracted, but Mo had always been quite firm with him, and he remembered his lessons. It really wasn’t his fault that he took any little bit of food he could safely get away with. Hesendek’s suggestion made him chirp happily, having finished his morsel and always eager for more.

“La? Who’s she?” Gamoira frowned slightly at the mention of another girl. She wasn’t the jealous type, not really anyways. She understood that Hesendek needed some friends besides her, despite the fact that nobody would be as loyal and protective as she was. However she was a little possessive, especially when it came to people who could really steal attention, and more importantly, his love away from her. Girls and dragons were very high on her list, the former especially. There would be nothing she could do it Hesen Impressed, but she could do something about him getting a girlfriend.

"La's my friend. I think." Hesendek blinked, not exactly sure what to call her. They were very friendly with each other. She was polite, and he helped her. That seemed like a budding friendship to him, at any rate. "She's justa 'nother candidate. We wen' down to th' wine cellar t'gether, like I said. Which was jus' pitiful, by the way." Hesendek frowned and shook his head at the memory of the pathetic stock. Not a single Benden wine in sight.

They entered the kitchen and the first thing Hesden did was grab a sweet roll, breaking off a piece to offer his little shoulder companion. "Hey Mo, where'd ya get Fang, anyways?" It wouldn't be so bad, having a little flit to keep him company. It would be good practice for a dragon, right? Teaching a little flit, taking care of it, it sounded like fun.

"Ye think she's yer friend?" Mo raised an eyebrow. How did you think someone was your friend? You either were, or you weren't. At least, that was how things were for her. Maybe things were less clear-cut with him. She snorted softly when her friend mentioned the wine cellars. If he had been down there and not spoken fondly of it, that meant that there was no Benden wine. Pity, really, since the wine was supposed to be very good. She didn't know, despite being a vintner. She didn't really like wine (but don't tell Hesendek).

Fang crooned happily when he was offered the sweet roll, nibbling on it with great enthusiasm. Food! Hooray! Gamoira was in the process of poking through the sandwiches when Hesendek asked his questions. "Eh? Grandparents got him for me. Gift fer learnin' how to write better. Supposed te be a scribe but it didn't work out." She grumbled at the memory of that endeavour. "Pity he ain't a green. Coulda given you one."

"Coulda sold her eggs for a bit of extra money, s'what you could of have done," Hesendek replied, offering up the rest of the sweet roll to Fang. He liked the way the flit crooned at him and wondered breifly if dragons were just as vocal when you gave it something it liked. Dragons. Hmm. For being in a Weyr, he certainly hadn't actually gotten to meet any. Well, he'd seen them, certainly, but that wasn't exactly what he wanted.

"You any good at poker, Mo? I ain', but m'sure I could be, if some'un tau' me better. But m' told that winnin' poker is a right good way to win some flitter eggs." Hesendek helped himself to one of the sandwiches his friend was picking through. He was only picky when it came to wine, lunch was simple. "Or maybe you could get 'im to fly a green and share the eggs with the momma."

My my, just full of ideas today, little Desendek.

"I woulda given ye one first though," Gamoira said pointedly, not one to consider the different ways she could make marks. Even if she had had a green she probably would have only kept tabs on her long enough to make sure her friend had an egg and then let the sharding thing do whatever it wanted. She certainly wasn't the type of person you'd go and buy flit eggs from, that was for certain. Mo knew very well how intimidating she was.

At the mention of poker she shook her head. "I ain't never played before." One, because no one had ever taught her and two, because she didn't like doing too many things that involved a lot of thinking. Poker looked like it was one of those games where smarts won over strength. She clearly was better at the latter. "Ye play it? Ye could always get one for yerself there. And he ain't gonna catch nothin' if you keep feedin' him." She gave Fang a poke and the flit squawked indignantly.

"Ye would suit a flit though. If I can find one, I'll give it to ye. Promise." There was a pause as Mo's face screwed up into a look of immense concentration. Finally, she said, "Do dragons and flits get along?" She didn't want to screw up her friend's chance at Impression.

Hesendek chuckled, reaching over to pat his friend's shoulder. "I know, Mo. S'cuz you're lovely an' charmin' an' sweet." He paused, taking a large bite out of his sandwich and chewing thoughtfully. He finished the sandwich in three bites total, helping himself to a second, and actually, why not a third, before turning to Mo and gesturing for her to follow him to a table.

"Ahh, right shame. I ain' good, n'aw t'all. Haven' won a damn thing since I started. N'aw tha' I really have time, doin' all these chores n' what not." He chuckled and started on the second sandwich, offering Fang a corner just as Mo scolded him. "Awww, hush you. They got themselves weyrbrats t' go n' catch them tunnelsnakes. Fang's fine."

H'dek flashed Mo his winningest grin and ran a hand through sandy-blond hair. "Mo, you are th' bes' frien' a guy could have. An' y'know, I jes' have no idea. Don' think Queens like flits. Dunno about the others, though."

Mo couldn't help but snort at Hesendek's compliments, however she didn't refute them. Instead she simply gave him what she would consider a playful shove. Gentle wasn't exactly a word she used often, and so it wasn't surprising that she was a little rough with her body. Still, she was making an effort to tone it down for her friend. She didn't want to shove him off the bench or anything, especially not while he was eating.

"Ye could be good if ye practiced I reckon," she said stoutly, reaching for a meat roll and popping it in her mouth. Fang crooned at her, rubbing his little blue head against her arm in a pitiful attempt to beg for food. When she ignored him he chattered angrily, only to make a very pleased noise when a sandwich corner was offered to him. Haha! Someone felt pity for him! He chewed on it happily even as Mo frowned at her friend. "He could use some exercise catchin' those tunnelsnakes," she grumbled but she didn't stop Hesendek from feeding her flit. At least they were both happy.

She grunted at his further compliments, but the corners of her lips twitched upwards in a brief smile. "Friends are fer stuff like this anyways," Mo replied as though waving what he was saying off. "And we should find out. Ain't gonna mess up yer chances at Impressin' one of them big dragons by given' you a flit. Ye ain't ridin' a Queen though. I hope. What do ye wanna ride anyways?"
PostPosted: Wed Jun 17, 2009 4:32 pm

Hesendek grinned a little and shook his head. "Dun' got time. A'sides, yer right. Dun' wanna make the little dragons angry. Or their momma." The idea of an angry Queen was pretty terrifying, even to a brave lad like himself. He had seen the size of those golds and no, he did not want to be the one to piss her off.

He'd have shoved Mo back, but it wasn't nice to shove girls. Or friends. And Mo would probably take it as an invitation to a wrestling match. As much as the candidate adored his friend, he wasn't ready to take her on in a physical challenge. It'd be akin to bringing a flit to the hatching sands; it was a Very Bad Idea.

"Wanna ride?" Hesendek laughed softly to himself and shrugged. "Anythin' that wan's me as it's rider. I ain' picky, Mo. If 'm meant to have one, I am. Ain't worth stressin' over. They know. N'aw me."

Gamoira gave a throaty chuckle. "Ye got a better head on ye than most of the candidates 'round here, always dreamin' about riding those shiny ones and all. Ye'll probably get picked by the biggest, best one anyways. I know these things." She tapped her head with one thick finger. Of course Hesen would Impress the biggest, best dragon in the whole clutch. He was her friend, after all, and her friends were destined for greatness. That was why there were so few of them.

"But we ain't got time to be muckin' around, talking about dragons. We got chores to do!" She grunted as she shifted her weight, preparing to get up from the benches. "Finish yer food and let's get goin'. I don't wanna be on latrine duty this time."

And so began another day in the life of Hesen and Mo.
