My parents were just watching a furry program on Animal Planet, and they kept saying how weird it was. Not even thinking about it, I said "That's not weird." and they gave me the strangest look. I dunno what to think. Just when I was getting confident about telling my parents about being a furry, my convidence goes down the tubes... Should I tell them or keep this to myself?

It was like going around the US and showing how some people get in touch with their inner furry.

when i told my parents i had to explain that what they saw on csi was not what i am. i am not a fursuiter. you just explain in what way you are furry.
do your parents accept you? the way you are.
if so. you can tell them its like telling your gay but less intensive and less big. im both so i know.

First, I gotta say this: Animal Planet did a program on Furries? Or is it that one program about those people who tattoo and modify their bodies to look more and more like the animal of their choosing? Like that guy who's becoming a tiger, another man who's becoming a leopard, and the Snake Guy.
Really, though, your parents' reaction would most likely hinge on what they've heard about the Furry fandom, if anything at all. If they've heard only the bad, such as the yiffing, the fursuit yiffing, the furverted porn, etc., then I would advise a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. At least, until they learn about the tame side of the community (which most of us are). So we like animals portrayed in a human-like way, so what? That doesn't mean we're all into bestiality. One of my online colleagues is a really pleasant Furry and a fursuiter and suit-maker; she's not into the sex-obsessed side at all, despite the inappropriate label that suiters get.
However, if they know nothing about the community at all, show them the better side. After all, most of us are just people who just appreciate anthropomorphic animals, whether it be in art or just the concept. Really, Furries are people too; we just have different interests.
Hate comes from fear; fear comes from misunderstanding; chronic misunderstanding comes from close-mindedness. Education and knowledge are the best pathway to reduce that fear and hate.

Refer to my previous anthrocon post.
The media needs to f**k off until they get their sources right.
Personally I don't think my parents need to know. They're the kind of people who like the reality TV brainwashing, and don't give a crap about much else. Seeing as how being a furry has nothing to do with my sexuality and just my social life, it's really none of their business. Maybe when I feel they've matured in my sense of the word I'll tell them.
I don't know how your parents work, so the choice is completely up to you. My assumption would be that they are curious as to why you would defend people that they believe are "freaks", unless they start with a subtle interrogation around the dinner table like my parents try to put off as simple curiosity, I wouldn't get to worked up about it.

Except in my case, hatred is born out of misinformation from outside sources such as FREAKIN CSI!!! WAY TO MAKE US LOOK LIKE CRAP ON MAINSTREAM TELEVISION CBS...ONLY HALF OF AMERICA WAS WATCHING!!! scream scream scream

I think I'm going to just wait until they've seen more about the fandom, maybe introduce it to them slowly and descretely instead of just stating the fact of what I am and having to explain it all at once. Thanks for the help guys. ^^

Unfortunately most people only know the CSI and Animal Planet views and yes, I had to explain to my mother that not all people who are furries are the CSI/AP freaks the TV loves to portray.
And lovingly my daughter sort of "outed" me and my husband by announcing "Mommy's a tiger! Daddy's a wolf!" And I had to both translate two-year-old and then explain what Raelin was ranting about.

You thought you might be a ghost... ++++++++++++++++++++You should tell them. If your parents really love and care for you, they shouldn't judge you on the things you like.
You didn't get to heaven but you made it close...

I haven't exactly told my parents, but I think they kinda know...
Anyway, as far as telling them, I'd suggest to not try and make it all awkward and stressful (like when I told my parents I was bi, agnostic, and dating someone behind their backs, all in one night in the middle of a fight sweatdrop ). I'd say something, but not make it seem like a big epic deal, and explain it further if they keep giving you strange looks. I dunno, I'm used to my parents thinking I'm weird cause I'm kinda eccentric, so I dunno how my word would hold up...

But the problem is they DO. They don't approve of the music I like or the clothes I wear, so the fact I am a furry will not be taken lightly by them.

But the question is: Do they know anything beyond what the media has made us out to be? If not, then I support slowly educating them and showing them that not everyfur is like those specially chosen by the media because they seemed the most stereotypical of Furs.
