Tehe.....Hey do u play the Baritone? I do! It rocks!! Umm.....All of my friends that play trombone and baritone are grossed out by the amounts of spit from my spit valves .....I am the only girl that plays baritone, basically in my whole school.....I think grossing out boys is fun! rofl

Its just a great way to make my friend who plays piano to look at me in disgust!!
Its funny!! You'll be talking to a woodwind, and spit it out mid conversation and they'll screw up their faces and casually walk away!
Its also funny to do it near drummers XD
Or when you're with someone you don't like and you empty it on their foot and they don't notice!

I don't like it, because my Tuba's spit valve is near my leg, so everytime I empty it, I normally have to go to 6th period with a huge water stain on my leg. Oh well, better than mold growing inside. gonk
And even worse..? It gets all over Big Baby. D: [My spit valve is horrible, it empties the majority on my leg, then some on my Tuba. ;~; ]
But this trombone player.. His spit valve is GROSS! He just presses it, and spit just spills out..
The Saxophones love trombone spit... Their all "SPIT!!! <3"... Weird people, I swear. o.o

I play Tuba. Got a St. Petersburg and for the longest time my spit valve was messy. The cork had grown old and started to erode, so no matter what I'd always have a huge wet spot on my leg. But I decided one day I was going to buy some cork and I changed it. No more spit drips, yey!
Actually, when it comes to spit, I think the worst thing is when I'm playing for so long and the spit accumulates in my mouthpiece, then I move my face away from it... it gets aaaaallll over my shirt. sweatdrop

I personally like spit valves. It is really fun to empty my spit in front of all the woodwinds. Or when you have your spit rag tied to the handle on your instrument after playing so that it doesn't get all moldy, then you ask a woodwind player to hold it...
thats HI-LARIOUS!!! like this one time i asked a percussionist if he could hold my trumpet and he grabbed the handle (with the spit rag on it), and was like "wats this thingy?" and i was like "oh that? thats my spit rag!" and he was like "ew! gross!" and dropped it. which wasn't good for my trumpet but its okay.
but you know whats really gross! ok, i know that it isn't spit, its only condensation, but whenever our band plays at games, the guys always stand up during chun chun and wave their spit rags around in the air. I am the only girl in the brass, and it gets REALLY gross. The guys always seem to somehow MISS the air, and end up hitting my HEAD instead. lolz...
but ya...i love spit rags.
another reason why i love them: one time in class, one of the guys had water in his trumpet when my teacher asked him to play something by himself. it made that gurgling noise, and my BD was like, thats it! no one move! then he came around and emptied all of our water on our heads.
thank GOODNESS i emptied my water right before that!!!

I don't know why they stereotypically gross out woodwinds so much.
Having been on both sides, perhaps it's just I can see it all clearer.
I don't really see why they would be grossed out though. All wind instruments have to deal with spit or condensation... whatever. When I played the clarinet it was the absolute worst because it would just come straight out on the floor... (since I only have played it at home, that's my carpet. XD)
And bassoons, well we need something like a spit valve. Taking out the bocal everytime it gets caught up there gets annoying after a while... And then sometimes it gets stuck in other parts of the instrument, and yeah... Spit valves just make everything so easy.

I actually really like spit valves and I wish that my tenor sax had one cause that thing drips spit all the time and its really gross. My main insturment in band is the obeo and I don't get grossed out by all the spit because my obeo drips alot alot of spit so it grosses all the preppy girls out..haha..way to much fun

Long live the wet crotch! You gotta love it when you've been playing for a while, and you get up to take a break...and you have a puddle in your lap that makes it look like you peed on yourself. I play Euph, so yeah...no helping it really. Condensation is always falling out of the bottoms of the valve casing, and I don't have a spit catcher, so yeah. And as far as the poll goes, what do we put if we aren't in college or high school...I's in the military. O_o
