-Welcome-

Through the cold and unforgiving mountains, I have survived. This area the humans call the Ridgeback is full of hidden dangers. It does not give second chances.

But I call this place home.

For many many years, I have survived here, by myself. I know that it would not care for me if my life is taken, by the cold, the snow, or another kyn's claw. But it had sheltered me for my entire life, provided me with everything I needed to survive.

There is food if you know how to find it. Shelter if you know how to build it. Life for those who would seek to protect it.

It will always be my home.

-About Verita-

Hmmm...you want to know about me?

I am a first-generation kyn. That means I do not have parents. Aedan took my egg from the Island of Life, and trusted my riders with it.

My riders...they loved each other. They were mates, and their son was five years old when I was born. Glen and Sparrow -those were my rider's names- were the ones who named me. Verita..."honesty". The two of them settled their clan in the upper reaches of the Ridgeback, for reasons I never learned of.

Our clan was only four strong. The prince, my older brother Storm the Gargoyle, the second, Thrymil my older sister the European, Baston, an Eastern only two weeks older than me, and me, Verita the Lunar.

Storm, the oldest of us, was only six months old when everything went wrong.

A pair of Eastern kyns had decided to take the area for their own territory. They were old and large, and our clan posed no threat for them. They attacked us in the dead of night.

I'll never forget that day, as fuzzy as it is from the memory of a much younger me. I can still remember one of the Easterns, she was of a lavender colouring, and her mate was a mint green. My two riders...

Thrymil held the Easterns off as Storm flew me and Baston to safety. Storm brought us back about a week later. The den...it was completely destroyed. We mourned over the bodies of Thrymil and our riders for many long days. We never found the body of Glen and Sparrow's son. I still wonder today what happened to him, but I can only assume that he might have run off by himself. No matter what happened, I don't have much hope that he is still alive.

Storm took care of me and baston, and taught us to survive. He showed us how to hunt, how to gather drinking water from the snow, and what of the rare greenery was usable. We learned together how to predict the weather, how to fight off animals bigger than us, how to stay warm, and everything we needed to continue living.

We lived a year together like that until...until an avalanche took Storm's life. He was completely buried in the snow. I could smell him, I dug as hard as I could, but I could not find him. Through our bond, I felt the life leave him. I also lost Baston that day, we were separated, and I believe him dead as well.

I was all alone. I did not know the world beyond the snow and ice of the Ridgeback, so I did not dare leave the mountains to the unknown world. So for twenty years I lived in the wilderness by myself.

I have finally found the courage to explore the lands below my home. I met two Kyn clans, Edoc'sil and Aezhenn Chalm. The former took me in, and the latter gave me a reason to live.

To be in the presence of other beings again! It was as if my entire world sparked into existence, into more than mere survival. To hear the voice of others, to share in moments together. I will never be comfortable in their unnatural dens, but I will do all that I can to help them.

Mikayl...I first met him when I was chasing Edoc'sil's hatchling up into the mountains. He helped me save the little one, and we spent many nights together up in the wilds, awaiting for conditions to be safe enough so that we can get back down. He was blind, so I opened my vision to him.

For such a long time, our open bond allowed us to understand each other in ways most beings cannot. We were two halves of a whole being. He calls this bond between us "love". Whatever word the language of humans may pin on this emotion will never be able to truly describe it. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I am at peace now, living in the mountains between the two kyn clans. I will defend my new friends with my life, and I will never forget what a blessing it is to be with others. What a blessing it was to have found my soul mate.

-North face of the southern Ridgeback-

The top of these peaks, where my riders lay, are covered with snow year round. The storms are harsh, the animals scarce, the vegetation few and hardy.

On the other side of the mountain lies the sea. I have seen it from the cliffs before, and I have lived on the southern face a few times, but I am most familiar with the northern face, where I have marked my territory.

The lower altitudes of the mountains are covered with forests, started with coniferous trees higher up, and ends with a mixed forest near the base.

1. Edoc'sil
Edoc'sil's den entrance is located in this general area. The ledge jutting out from the entrance is obviously shaped with magic, and stands out clearly from the mountainside. The trail leading from Weslock splits to pass by this place, so that its rider has easy access to the village.

2. Former Clan's densite
Further up the mountain from here, and more to the west, is where my rider's former den lies. I have not dared go back, for I fear that the two Easterns who had attacked might still be there. I burn for revenge, and would not hesitate to sink claws and fangs into their flesh, but I know that my life is forfeit if I do.

3. Cliff Shelter
This is where I had spent a week with Mikayl. I have come back and strengthened the shelter for me to stay in during summer. The walls and the floor are hard from frozen snow, and is actually quite warm inside. The temperature never rises above freezing here, so the shelter is not in danger of melting.

The entrance is dug very low in the snow, and is tunnelled upwards so that the floor of the shelter is higher than the entrance. Because heat travels upwards, this traps all the warm air.

4. Aezhenn Chalm
Ari's den. It is a den carved from the ground, filled with water, frozen, and dug out into tunnels and rooms. Magic keeps the entire place from melting during the peak of summer.

5. The landslide
A landslide happened above Aezhenn Chalm a while ago. Eclipse mentioned that it was because all of the rubble dug out to make the den was dumped higher up in the mountain, and collapsed. It is now stabilized by him.

I have found the rubble a great place to create a shelter for myself. Some of the larger boulders lean against each other firmly, leaving an open space beneath it. Smaller rubble sealed small holes, and it didn't take me long to clear out the debris I needed to. This place will allow me to be close to Mikayl the days I do not want to stay at his den, Edoc'sil, or my other shelters.

6. Main shelter
Where the river meets, I have found a large cave dug from the roots of a great oak tree. Probably left over from a bear's hibernation den. It was just big enough for me to stay inside comfortably.

It is a very warm and comfortable den, and thus it will be the one I will stay in for most of my time. The area around here is lush with vegetation and prey. Survival will be easier than in the upper reaches of the mountain, although I find that I can not tolerate the summer heat here. During the hottest weeks of summer, I will retreat to my shelter by the cliff.

7. To Weslock
This trail snakes up the mountain, and was mainly made by Edoc'sil. It continues north to Weslock, a human settlement where both Ariya and Rowan came from. I have been warned by the riders that the humans do not welcome Kyns in their midst, so I am sure to keep my distance. I have little experience with humans, and the only ones I do have are with riders.

-Relation with others-

Edoc'sil

Rowan
I don't know her much. She is the rider of Edoc'sil, but it was Rosemary's decision to take me in. She had been extremely ill when I first met her, and her health has not been strong ever since. I do not feel particularly bonded to her, but as an extension of the comradie I feel through her clan, I am concerned for her wellbeing.

Cyclone
I have adopted Cyclone as my own daughter. I raised her up to be the kyn she is today, and I am proud of her. She stays for most of her time at Edoc'sil, and is one of the hunters for the clan. I am proud to be called her mother.

Aezhenn Chalm

Mikayl
What is there to say? He is my mate, and the spark that lit everything that is good in my life. He is such a strong kyn, and does not let his disability weigh him down.

About Mikayl

[x]

Why're you bothering me?

You want to know more about me? What are you, some kind of stalker? Go away.

...I told you to go away!

Fine, I'll tell you if you promise to go away afterwards. Hmph.

I guess it was hard for the first part of my life getting used to the fact that I can't see things like everybody else. At first, I thought I could just train my nose to be a substitute for my eyes, but that idea was quickly dashed when it was obvious that some things my nose couldn't sniff out.

And then Zen came up with this idea of using earth magic to send vibrations through the ground, and taught me how to use earth magic. In the beginning, I could only 'see' a foot or two around me, but now I can see for several meters in all directions. Now, I don't even have to think about it.

But I first met Verita when she scared away that beautiful deer I was going to hunt for Aezhenn, 'cause we were practically starving. When she told- well, she showed me that a hatchling from Edoc'sil had been kidnapped by the wind, what else could I do but go help her?

And then we ended up being stranded up there for nearly a week. I'd never met such a... I really don't know how to describe it, but... Vera, she was just so unwavering. Whenever she did something, she didn't second-guess herself constantly. And Verita didn't fawn over my well-being, 'cause she knew I could take care of myself, just like how I know she can take care of herself.

I don't think she knows what 'love' means, but she definitely knows what it is. It makes me feel a little stupid now, that I thought she might reject me, and avoid me, knowing how I felt. But she didn't!

I don't think I've ever been so happy.

Happy now that you know the story of my life?
