So the school district I go to has given us the day off today due to inclement weather. Funny thing is the roads aren't even icy, just wet. Last year, it snowed three maybe four times in the winter, and bigger than any snowfall I had ever seen in Texas. Last year, however, we never got out of school.
Last year there was a bus accident during one such day. No one was severely injured, but bus 105 was put out of commission and a bunch of the kids I talked to were pretty traumatized by the event. No other school district had accidents that day, because no other school district held classes. Sure, it was nice to point fingers and laugh that we got to finish our school year before all the other districts, but somebody could have gotten hurt.
And now we have a snow day with just a chance of snow? Me thinks somebody learned their lesson last year. It's just pretty sad that the higher ups in my district don't go by the term "better safe than sorry", and wait until there are casualties before any action is taken.

You must be in North/North Central Texas. I live smack dab in central Texas. We haven't had a snow day since it actually snowed in 2007. But before that...I'd have to say...um...2000.

Lucky for having a snow day. xD Haven't had a single snow day this winter and I'm two states north. But then again... I live on campus and can walk to class. -_-;
But you'd think they'd have had more sense regarding snow. >.> It doesn't even take 1/4" thick ice on a bridge to send a small truck spinning. *has experienced this, recently* Southeast Kansas got most of their school districts closed due to ice. I'm glad your district has finally learned, though. *shakes head* And to think what they would have had to deal with if kids had been killed...

I live in Florida, so I get no snow days sweatdrop
But a sort of similar thing goes on down here. No one used to care about hurricanes in my city, and we'd just blow them off...Until Wilma. Wilma hit us really hard, since no one was prepared, and we got hit hard and fast. My city was officially declared a disaster area, and we didn't have power for a few weeks. Now every time there's even a hint of a hurricane, we go into panic mode.

I remember when Hurricane Fran hit North Carolina when I was in school. We were all told there would be no school the day the hurricane was making landfall. It hit our area with heavy winds and rain and did actually knock out power in a few areas, but our "hurricane day" was the most beautiful day of that fall.
I think that year, or the year after, we did actually get a heavy enough snow/ice storm that had us snowed in for a week... not that I got to enjoy it. We lost power (which means no running water) and my dad and I got a stomach virus. My poor mom and brother were hauling water into the house from our hot tub so Dad and I could flush the toilet after throwing up.

Dang, that sucks; I can't even begin to imagine not having power for a week; Our power went out for 3 hours the other day and I was allready going crazy; all I felt like doing was sleeping @_@

I think it sucked more for my mom and brother having to clean up after us. Thankfully, we had a fireplace and a generator! We had TV if nothing else!! MWAHAHA!!
That's not the worst "no power" experience I've had though. Four days after having my son, I spiked a 104° fever and had to be rushed to the ER. About an hour after I got home, the power went out when a car hit a local power pole. The temperature in the house rose to 98° and the power didn't come back on until almost 4am the next morning. That was horrible...

Worst power outage that happened to me was last year when it went out for five hours straight. I was forced to play a game of "Sorry" with my family eek

I've had power outs during the summer. And here in Texas that is no fun. Especially when it last for hours. Funny thought. Last year I was spending the weekend with my mum and the power went out in her apartment building. People were just like walking around. "Hey. That building over there has power. How come we don't?" That went on for like and hour. Then my mum called the power company and suddenly the power came back on. How come no one else called the power company? It's amazing how ignorant people can be at times.

Our power was out for three weeks. And our apartment complex doesn't let us have generators. I felt like I was in the dark ages...we ate cold noodles and crackers, and had candles lit all over the house at night. And no air conditioning. If you went outside, everything was dead silent, and there was debris and trees all over the ground, some ripped clean out of the ground. It was like being on another world...

Don't apologize...You had to stoop to the lowest level of the low in order to say it. I pity and commend you for your brave efforts.

Power outages in Florida during the summer = miserable. Too hot. DX Hurricane Ivan hit right on us, it was NOT fun at all. No power for three weeks, school basically ended right there. But then we had to start three weeks early. >< Anyways I'm sure people have had worse. XD
