Combining Item Groups
Post One: Intro Post

In this thread, the idea of combining different groups of matching items will be discussed. The first two posts were originally part of the main thread, but have been incorporated into this guide.

You basically start with a group of matching items and mix them together evenly.
Orrr... you start with one color and spread it evenly around an avatar. You then pick another color and spread it evenly around the avatar. Repeat this step until you have all the desired colors you want or you can't add any more colors.

The key is just finding items that match each other and then layering them together.
I can't help with deciding whether two items match each other, you have to see that for yourself. I have done some of the work for you by listing groups of matching items in this thread and the thread about [item groups]. If you're unsure about layering check out the [guide on layering].

Combining Item Groups
Post Two: Recommended Items - Color Groups

This post lists items that are useful to keep around any inventory. These items are staples for those who'd like to change their avatars and make different avatars often. They're also good items to keep in mind when making an outfit that you'll choose to keep for a long time.

If you're having trouble with making matching avatars, this post will help you out. They already match so you don't have to worry about the matching aspect, just the balance aspect. The next post shows you how to mix and match groups of matching items.
If none of the items in your inventory match, your outfits won't match. If you buy items that match, you will be able to make matching outfits.

• • Items in Color Groups

Here are a few lists of good, matching accessory items. You might find these lists useful if you're making an avatar that uses the colors black, white, red, blue or gold. There are many more items that match these items, I have not listed all possible matching items.
If you're having difficulty matching any other shade of color, maybe you can find some help [here]. That thread contains more groups of matching items.

The point here is that your avatar will match if you buy items that match. It's simple. If you don't own any items that match each other, your outfits won't match.

If your goal is to make one outfit, you're bound to find at least some of these items useful.

If your goal is to be able to change your avatar a lot and match every time, I recommend buying most of these items.
You don't have to buy tons of items. Just be sure to buy a couple items that equip in areas that are spread evenly around the avatar. Please scroll down to post ten if you'd like some tips on how to spread the color evenly around the avatar.
All you have to do is mix and match items of two different colors and you have a whole new outfit to wear.

Combining Item Groups
Post Three: Recommended Items - Making Outfits

Using the idea of item groups from the last post, we will now mix and match to create outfits. :]

• • Making Outfits

Now~ let's put some of these item groupings to use. =]

Remember the rule of three.
Picture your avatar split up into parts. I often picture my avatar divided into four parts or even five parts. Dividing the avatar into two halves can sometimes work too if you have two chunky items.
However, we'll picture it split into three parts. The three parts are: the head, the torso and the legs. Now, no matter how many colors you use in an avatar, make sure that each part of the avatar has that color in it.
For example, say you use a red hat and red socks. Be sure to also add a red item to the middle by using red gloves, a red skirt, red shorts or a red belt. This keeps the color evenly spread around the avatar.
This is also why accessory items are key. ;D Take advantage of the many ways items can layer. This helps you spread a color evenly.

After reading this post, if you can view [this thread] to see more info on combining groups of matching items.

• • Females

First, let's choose a color. Blue sounds like a good color. Evenly balance some blue items around the avatar.
User Image
Next, let's choose a second color and evenly balance those items around the avatar. The grecian shorts are excellent items to use under skirts and with stockings or socks.
User Image
Now~ we choose a third color. Red sounds fun. The red hair brings red to the top of the avatar. The socks will show through the flame shoes. The belt will show over the skirt on Gaia. The bottle is added because it is both red and blue.

Item List:

BLUE CRUSH! Bottled Cooler
Blue Flame Shoes

Icy Snug Balloon Skirt
Mustard Ruffled Top
Red Class Sock
Red Leather Belt
Red Longjohns

Estimated Total: 11,369 Gold
(Estimated with known item values on 10 May 2007)

Now~ let's use the first two colors again and then add a third 'group' of items to make a different outfit.
User Image User Image
We'll add white as our third color. However, since we already have yellow, we'll use a couple items that are both yellow and white.

• • Males

First, we'll choose a few white items to spread around the avatar.
User Image

Next we'll throw in a few black items. Bear with me, I know this doesn't look very balanced at the moment. I have a target in mind and know that I can always go back and tweak the amount of black or other items.
Those Black 90s gloves layer under Dancer Cuffs.
User Image

And finally, we'll add our third color: Brown. Yes, brown. We need shoes, so we'll add Buckskin Leather Kachina Dancer Boots. These shoes contain all three colors that we're dressing the avatar in. The brown wrinkled vest is a close enough match. The Black GetaGRIP top is always a nice choice. :] A handheld is always a nice addition, so the wizard's wand was added.
Next we'll choose our hair. I've chosen the guy's stardom brown hair (lite) because it's a near match. It adds brown to the head. Don't forget that hair can be used to aid in matching.

Fitted White Shorts - grey trim
White Beret

Let's make another avatar using the first two white and black groupings of items and add a third color to it to make a different outfit.
User ImageUser Image

Green is a great color that really pops off the screen. ...But not in a way that blinds people.
The following items were chosen. The Green Jersey Top was used because we already have white in the avatar.
I chose black hair and green eyes.
User Image

If we add the green to the white and black items we've already chosen, we get this avatar. This avatar does not look very polished. We had to unequip the Skull Hairpin to wear the Sacred Leaf. There is not enough black at the bottom of the avatar and too much white around the neck area.
User Image

So.. we go back and tweak our outfit a touch. The Black Class Sock item is added to bring black to the bottom. We take off the White Bowtie and add a Black Tie to bring black to the neck. Emo Glasses were added because the face looked plain.

Combining Item Groups
Post Four: Making Multiple Outfits Quickly

Steps for Quickly Making Lots of Matching Outfits

Do you know people who change their avatars quickly and make them match perfectly all the time? Do you wonder how they are able to come up with a new outfit so fast?
Here's the secret.
Most of them have already done the work ahead of time. They most likely have a large inventory with a rainbow of colors. Not only that, but they have items in each color for the head, torso, arms, hands, waist, legs and feet. Or in other words, they just have a lot of items in each color.
You can own five red hats, but that won't help you make a matching avatar. You must own other kinds of red items so you can spread the color red evenly around the avatar.

  • Step one: Decide what colors you want to use.
    • You can have as few as two colors. You can also fill up your inventory with all kinds of colors.
    • Here we will use five main colors: black, white, blue, red and gold.

  • Step Two : Find items.
    • The easiest way to search for items of certain colors is to use [tektek]. Tektek allows you to sort through items by color, so it does most of the work for you. Remember that matching means you want to match the exact shades of the items as best as you can. Don't use a
dark maroon red item to match an orange-red item.
  • This step takes time. You're spending time now so that you can save time when making all of your outfits in the future.
  • For this step, you must use your eyes and decide whether you think some items match. If you're not sure whether some items match each other, ask someone in the forums (or ask in this guild ;D).
  • Hint: The main thread already has a list of useful black, white, blue, red and gold items. ;]
  • Make sure to find items that equip all around the avatar. Don't just find a red shirt. Find a red vest, jacket, gloves, bracelets, necklace, etc. Why, you ask? Here's why:
Here we have one set of matching blue items and one set of matching red items. They are both very good sets of items. The items are spread out around the avatar. These items can be paired quickly with other items to make matching avatars.
However, these two sets cannot be paired with each other. The items are on the same layers. If you equip the red skirt, you can't equip the blue skirt. If you equip the red visor, you can't equip the blue crown. And etc.

    User Image User Image

...True, you're no dummy. You can mix and match the items like this:
    User Image
What's wrong with this? The colors are not spread around evenly! For starters, there is no red at the feet. And there is no blue at the head.
Now, if you owned more items in different layers, this would be no problem. We'll fix this avatar up soon.
  • Be sure to buy wigs, skins and contacts. These types of items allow you to change your avatar quickly from one extreme to another without having to spend any gold to change your avatar's base, eye color or hairstyle.
  • Items that have multiple poses are extremely useful.
    • Example: Dark Halo. The dark halo comes with a variety of poses. You can use the Dark Halo wherever you need to fill up a space. If you need black at the feet, use the Darkstep pose. If you need black on the arms, use the Dark Halo arm poses. If you need black at the head, use the poses at equip on the head. Many, many, many items have multiple poses. There are way too many to list. Go see which items would work best for you.
    • Example: GO Player. This item has multiple poses that come in a variety of colors. Need red at the feet? Don't worry. Need a blue handheld? Don't worry. Need green at the waist? Don't worry. It's the equivalent of owning a red MP3 player, a green MP3 player, and a blue MP3 player all in one. O: .... The downside is that you can only use one mp3 player at a time unless you own more than one GO Player. Many, many, items contain multiple color poses of one thing. The Satin Hairbow is another good example of this. It's eight hairbows in one. Take advantage of these kinds of items.

  • Step Three : Buy the items.
    • You can skip this step and just play around on tektek. This way you'd have every Gaia item at your fingertips. This is good for practice and allows you to find all sorts of items to pair up. Eventually, I'd hope that you'd want to dress up your own avatar on Gaia and not just make tekteks. Why even have a Gaia account?
    • This step also takes time. You must earn the gold or cash to buy the items. There are a whole bunch of different ways to make gold. Some ways are faster than others.
    • My recommendations: Buy some cheap items first so you have something to wear. Don't get too caught up in cheap items though. If you want an item that's worth 100k in the marketplace, you'd better start saving up for it. Don't wait too long. If the item is not found in the gold shops, then it's most likely an item that can (and will) increase in price. If you wait too long, that item could soon cost 400k.
    • My recommendations: Focus on buying items by color. You can't make a matching avatar with one red item, one blue item, one black item and one gold item. Buy a few red items and then buy a few blue items. This way you can mix and match the red and blue items while you're earning the gold to buy the rest of the items. (Remember that these colors are just what I'm using as my examples. If you want to buy yellow items, green items and/or pink items, go for it!)
    • It's easier if the items you buy are one solid color. Sometimes an item might have multiple colors on it. Say you want to use blue. If your blue item also has green on it, don't forget that you have to spread the green color around the avatar too.
For this example, here are the items we decided to buy. The items are listed out at the bottom of this post.
User Image User Image User Image
      User ImageUser Image
    • *Note: These examples came from a real conversation I had with someone. This is why there are items in these examples that don't come from the gold shops. They were items that were given out for free and can be found in the marketplace. They were very cheap at the time. They may or may not still be cheap now. For the most part, I made a list of cheap items.

  • Step Four: Mix and match your items to your heart's desire.
    • You don't have to worry about whether your items match or not. You know they match because you picked them out just for that reason. You don't even need much imagination, you did all the work already. O:
    • You own all the items you need to make a new outfit, so you don't have to waste time looking on tektek. You don't have to waste time buying the items. But hey, you might find that you need a new item to complete your avatar. If you can use that same item in other outfits, go get it.
    • Do not forget the other rules to the matching style. You want to spread each color evenly around the avatar. Don't let an item of one color touch another item of the same color.
Say your color scheme is blue/black/white. Don't let one blue item touch another blue item. Break up a blue shirt and blue pants by adding a white skirt. You could even get fancy and add in a black belt.
Look up the guidelines if you think you have forgotten any rules.
    • Annd, if you're still having trouble with the matching style, you can ask for help from me or the others who post in the guide. Some of them couldn't make matching avatars when they first started posting in the guide. They asked questions, never gave up and are now pros at the matching style. They would make tekteks and post them. Others would tell them what they did well and give tips on how they could improve other areas. And from there, they picked up the tricks to the matching style. It all just comes with practice, I think. ^^ Really, you'll get it down pat in no time and won't need to look at this guide again. ;}
    • Here are some outfits we can make with the items we bought. A lot more than six can be made.

      User ImageUser Image User Image
User Image User Image User Image
*Note!!: The layering on the red/white/blue avatar is wrong. The 90s visor layers under the silly hat. The model will be fixed eventually. > <
    • And since we own a bunch of red items and a bunch of blue items, we can fix that avatar from step two. I'm sure you can make a better red and blue avatar. However, here we are limited to the items that we bought.
      User Image

  • Step Five : Avatar Block? (Optional)
    • You own all the items you need to make outfits, yet you still can't come up with something to wear. This happens to all of us at some point. Here are some ideas for overcoming the block:
      • Pick a random color scheme you haven't used in a while. Pick a random color combination that you've never used yet. You might have to go buy new items to do this.
      • Choose a favorite item to work with. Choose a random item that you haven't used in a long time. Fill in the rest of the avatar with matching items.
      • Close your eyes and click a couple random items. Those are the items you'll use to start your outfit.
      • Make sure to collect all of your Daily Chances and Sponsor items. Free items rock and you'll have something new to play with. If the new item doesn't match any item you own, go search out matching items.
      • Buy a starter item that you didn't already own and use it in an avatar. Buy a more expensive item to use in an outfit if you must.
      • Use an item that already has three or four colors in it and try to make a matching outfit around it.

That's a good chunk of gold. However, with these base items, you can make lots of different outfits. Sometimes people spend 40k on just one outfit and they consider it to be cheap.
With a basic set of items like this, you'll be ready to match many new MCs, EIs, sponsor items, event items, etc that come your way. If you want to be even more ready, invest in other colors. Also, invest on different shades of the same color since there are so many different shades of items on Gaia.

    Combining Item Groups
    Post Five: Reusing Items

Use the same items in multiple outfits.

Here's another approach to quickly changing up your outfits.
First, you start off with one layer of color. Then you add a second layer of color. At this point, you're done. You can always go on to add more colors.

I'll use my own avatar as an example here. The examples won't be perfect because I'm working with my inventory. I don't have all of Gaia's items at my fingertips. However, I'm not too limited since I have had a couple years to buy gold shop items and I make sure to buy matching items.

    • Step One: First layer of color.
      • My avatar has white hair and grey eyes. My hair and eyes will be in every one of my outfits. My eyes are much easier to cover up than my hair is. For this reason, my first layer of color will be white and I used glasses to cover my grey eyes.
        User Image

  • Step Two: Add another color.
    • There's not much to this step. Add a second layer of color by following the guidelines to matching. Voila, you have an outfit.
Notice how I took advantage of item layers and never changed the original white layer when I added the other colors.

    Combining Item Groups
    Post Six: Uncommon Item Groups

    Uncommon Item Groups

This post is again about combining groups of colors. This post will show some examples of outfits that use colors that you do not see much around the forums.

A good majority of the site dresses in black. They might vary it a bit by adding white or red. There's nothing wrong with these color combinations. People can make very interesting avatars with these colors.

If you want your avatar to stand out from the crowd, try using uncommon items or colors.
Some items are uncommon because they are old and not part of the latest fad. Some items are uncommon because they are hard to match. Some items are uncommon because they're rare and expensive. If you're lucky enough to own them, wear them well and with pride. >3

If you can make a matching outfit with those odd items, your avatar will really stand out from the others on the page. Plus, with hard to match items, you get a little more leeway. Avatar aficionados understand how hard it is to match those items so you get props for coming close. If you use a common easy-to-match color and your avatar doesn't match very well, you don't get props.

First, pick an item that you don't see people wear very often. (Make sure you can afford the items you choose. For example, the angelic halo isn't common because it's so expensive and rare, not because people find it hard to match.)

Second, scan through tektek to find other items that are the same shade as the one you chose. You can always ask other people on the forums if they already know of some matching items.

Third, hope that you can find enough items to make a balanced avatar.
If not, wait for the Gaia artists to make an item that matches it. You might have to wait months, but items eventually are released that will match it.

    Fourth, mix and match! :}
Pair your uncommon color item group with other common or uncommon colors.

    Combining Items Groups
    Post Seven: Item Coordination

    Item Coordination

As I mentioned before, buying items in groupings of colors makes it easy to quickly make outfits for your avatar.

This post gives you a cheat sheet for what types of items to add of each color.

Legal type info: Most of the material for this section has been taken and adapted from this thread [x] with the owner's (Dorg Endo) permission.

This information was written for a time when we had less layers. We weren't able to equip as many items on the avatars as we can now. The examples also come from that time.

Item Combination Ideas to Help You Match and Coordinate Your Outfit

This is a cheat sheet of combinations you can use to help you make your outfit. This list is favorable to store items since those are the most available to every user. This list also favors my (the original creator's) idea to have the basic design of your outfit to be shirt, pants, and shoes.

To best use this list you should already have a partial outfit constructed, or you have a specific item in mind you want to use and need to solve the problem of coordinating it in size, color, shade, theme, etc.

((Pick one item, then use this list to see what other items you should look for to coordinate with the one you want. If you want to use another item that doesn't work with the rules of the first one, again consult the list to see what other item slots should be taken advantage of to add it in. :]
More often than not, Gaia has not yet made items of every color that will fit into each slot. Two items that you need will often unequip each other. But that's the challenge you can overcome to make a great outfit.

How to use these cheat sheets: You have one of the items from this upper row. You match it with one item that comes from each of the next two bracketed suggestions.
    Example for the first section:
You have: Red hair [Hair Color and Style]
You need: Red Shirt [Any one or more Upper Body Item]
You need: Red Socks or Shoes [Any one or more Lower Body Item] ))

    Head Item Equips/Appearence
[ Hair Color and Style | Eye Color and Style | Top of Head Equip | Eye or Forehead Equip | Ear Equip | Face Equip ]

[Any one or more Upper Body Item]
[Any one or more Lower Body Item]

    Shirt + Socks or Shoes
    Tail + Sock or Shoes
Jacket or Vest + Socks or Shoes
    Gloves + Pants or Skirt
Scarf or Cloak + Socks or Shoes
    Holdable + Ankle Item
    Holdable + Sock or Shoes

    Upper Body Item Equips
    [ Necklace | Scarf | Cloak | Back Wings | Shirt | Jacket | Gloves | Holdable | Undergarment ]

[Any one or more Head Item]
[Any one or more Lower Body Item]

Head Item + Pants or Skirt
    Head Item + Waist Item
Head Item + Socks or Shoes
    Head Item + Ankle Item
    Head Item + Tail

    Lower Body Item Equips
    [ Waist | Skirt | Pants | Ankle | Socks | Stockings | Shoes | Tail | Undergarment ]

[Any one or more Head Item]
[Any one or more Upper Body Item]

    Head Item + Gloves
    Head Item + Shirt
    Head Item + Waist Item
Necklace or Scarf or Cloak or Back Wings

    Applying Item Combination Ideas

This section will help you in that regard with splendid visual examples of this coordination in work.

Coordinating items isn't just about the color, it is also about the size and theme each item has. Balancing those concepts as well any other an item may challenge you with can help you make your avatar.

    • Female Example #1
    User Image

    [ Hair ] + [ Skirt ] + [ Shoes ] = Red Emotion + Basic Skirt + Pimpin Shoes
    [ Hair ] + [ Undergarment ] + [ Shoes ] = Red Emotion + Swimtop + Pimpin Shoes
    [ Hat ] + [ Shirt ] = Nitemare Headband + Complex Shirt
    [ Hat ] + [ Gloves ] + [ Socks ] = Golden Laurels + Leather Punk Sock
    [ Glasses ] + [ Tail ] = Pirate Patch + Devil Tail

Also look at the size of the items used. She has a very large amount of items on her head, so balance the size of the items. The tail and shoes play into that role as well. Color coordination to this detail may not be for everyone, but try and take note of the balance of item sizes which can apply to a wider variety of avatar styles.

    • Male Example #1
    User Image

    [ Hat ] + [ Shirt ] + [ Shoes ] = Pimpin Hat + Complex Shirt + Pimpin Shoes
    [ Hat ] + [ Necklace ] =Golden Laurels + Gold Locket and G-pin
    [ Necklace ] + [ Pants ] = Gold Locket and G-pin + Outlaw Pants
    [ Hat ] + [ Gloves ] = Headband + Getagrip Black Gloves

Notice how the hair is almost completely hidden because of the head items he is wearing. If you have a Salon Hairstyle and do not wish to waste your money by deleting your avatar you can try and disguise your hair...assuming you do not feel like seeing your hair style on a certain day. The same thing can apply to eye color, use glasses and other face equips to disguise your eyes if you do not feel like seeing your eyes at some point in time.

    • Female Example #2
    User Image

    [ Hat ] + [ Shirt ] + [ Socks ] = Helmet + Dont ask Shirt + Green Stockings
    [ Hat ] + [ Gloves ] + [ Shoes ] = Horns + Were Claws + Were Feet
    [ Hair ] + [ Skirt ] = Red Emotion + Pimpin Skirt
    [ Glasses ] + [ Gloves ] + [ Shoes ] = Pirate Patch + Were Claws + Were Feet

Take a look at the similar theme between many of the items used. The horns, holdable, tail, gloves, and shoes are all evil themed. These items of similar theme from head to toe help create a solid overall look for her avatar.
However, don't hesitate to use an item that strays from a theme if you feel it's the perfect item that makes the outfit work. Heck, your avatar doesn't even need a "theme."

    • Male Example #2
    User Image

    [ Hair ] + [ Pants ] = Grey Hair + Black Fitted Short
    [ Hat ] + [ Belt ] + [ Socks ] = Red 90s Visor + Red Belt + Red Class Sock
    [ Hat ] + [ Gloves ] = Horns + Black 90s Gloves
    [ Hat ] + [ Gloves ] + [ Socks and Shoes ] = White Punk Band + Black 90s Gloves + Class Socks and Rough Shoes
    [ Shirt ] + [ Socks or Shoes ] = Dont ask Shirt + Rough Shoes

The use of color within colored items is a good example to matching and attention to detail. The hints of white within the shirt, gloves, socks, and shoes complement the only pure white item, the headband. Using small details can make a big statement for your avatar.
