Item Layers
Post One: Information and Index

This guide is unfinished, but it's also now unnecessary. Want to know if your tektek will work? Want to know if two items will layer together?
Gaia has a feature that you can use in order to preview multiple items together... and with items you own. It's the Gaia Labs feature called Inventory Search.

If you don't already have this feature activated, click this link:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/labs
Scroll down to the feature called "Inventory Search" and click the word "activate." (You can also undo this whenever you want by returning to Gaia Labs and clicking on "deactivate.")

Now, go to your dress up screen: http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatar/
Type in the name of one of the items you'd like to look up. Make sure to click the "all gaia" option if the item is not in your own inventory. Equip the item.
Type in the name of another item. Equip it.
You now see how two items will look on your avatar, even if you don't own those two items. Since you're in your dress up screen, you can also use your own items on your avatar.
Keep in mind that you can only preview one item at a time this way. For example, if your item uses two poses from the Reve Rouille, you will only be able to see one pose at a time. You still might be able to get an idea of whether or not the tektek or dream avatar or new outfit you'd like to make will be possible to make with Gaia's layering.

This is a general guide for the basic understanding of how items layer. This guide pertains to all styles, not just matching.
It's not always easy to tell what layer an item equips to just by looking at it. For that reason, this guide includes examples of some items that don't follow the normal rules.

Hopefully this guide will aide people when creating dream avatars and outfits that are not impossible to make on Gaia. By impossible, I do not mean including the elusive angelic halo. I mean that the impossible tektek includes two items that cannot equip at the same time with gaia's layering.

The artists will shift items from one layer to another even after they've been out for a while. This guide may not always be accurate if I haven't had the chance to update it with new information.

Most items layer the same way for females and for males. If they do not, I will make a special mention of it.
If items are male- or female-only, they will be marked with (M) or (F), respectively.

Gaia has over 10,000 items. I will not list every single item. I also won't list every single layer. This guide will cover just a few common layers and items.

This guide is lengthy and full of pictures. It is a wall of text that will make you want to say "TL;DR." Since it's also a lot of info to absorb at once, I recommend just starting with the second post. Once you have a grasp on the second post, then check out the other posts to learn more details. You don't have to read it all at once. Heck, keep the guide up in a different tab while creating a tektek and just use it as a reference if you have any questions.

Item Layers
Post Two: Quick Sheet and Tips

§Tips
  • Use "ctrl F" to see if your item in question is included in one of these lists. I often abbreviate whole sets instead of writing out each item. In other words, I will not list out "Warm Starter Rocker Girl Top, Neutral Starter Rocker Girl Top, Cool Starter Rocker Girl Top." Instead, I will just write "starter rocker girl tops." When using ctrl F to find an item, it's probably best to use a key word like "rocker." You most likely won't find your item if you typed out the full name of "Warm Starter Rocker Girl Top."
  • When in doubt, preview the item in the shops or marketplace. Equip an outfit that will help you figure out how an item layers. If the previewed item unequips a shirt you're wearing, then that's the layer it's on.
If an item layers above or over another item, those two items can usually be worn together. If two items are on the same layer, they cannot be worn together. Equipping one item will unequip the other item.
  • If you're ever unsure about whether an item combo will work, don't hesitate to ask other people if they know how an item will layer! People in this guild or in the AT should be able to answer your item layering question. Sometimes the only way to know how an item layers is by owning it (or previewing it in the marketplace or shops). And you might not want to buy two 300k items just to find out that you can't wear them together.

§Frame of Reference
I do not have exact names for layers. I will describe how items layer with respect to other items.
I consider certain layers to be the main, regular layers. The basic rules are formed with these items in mind. I will then expand on some items that do not follow the expected rules in the following posts.
I will use a specific group of items in order to create a point of reference. The items shown in this post represent all of the other items that layer just like they do. For example, I've chosen Warm Starter Surfer Girl Flip-flops as my example shoe item. All regular shoes will layer just like those shoes do. I will then make a note of shoes that do not behave like Warm Starter Surfer Girl Flip-flops.

§Reference Items
This explanation refers to the reference items and their layers only!
Not all items follow these rules. It is only a quick and basic guide to keep in mind.
In order to find out information on items that do not follow these rules, please refer to the other posts.

Item Layers
Post Four: Starter Items

§ Starter Items
Most of the starter items follow the basic rules. For information on the basic rules, see post two. For further information on the different items, refer to index in post one to find the specific posts.
User ImageUser ImageUser Image

§Oddball Starter Items
You'd think that starter items would follow all of the basic rules so as not to confuse newbies. Nope. That would be too easy. Some of the starter items don't follow the basic rules.

Starter Urban Guy Vest
Starter Athletic Girl Shirt
Starter Skater Girl Jacket
Starter Skater Guy Jacket

User Image

Equip under:
  • vests, jackets, sleeveless shirts
Equip over:
  • pants, gloves
Cannot be worn with:
  • skirts and shirts that have sleeves.

For the most part, these items can be thought of as skirts. None of those four items can be worn with a skirt.
While that's a bummer, these four items can be worn with shirts that have no sleeves. Shirts that have no sleeves equip over these four items.

These items behave oddly with undershirts.
The torso of wool, traveller and baseball undershirts equip over the torso of these four items. The sleeves of wool and baseball undershirts equip under the sleeves of these four items.
These four items equip over spacey tops.

Some actual examples:

User ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser ImageUser Image
Example One: Neutral Starter Athletic Girl Shirt, Green Spacey Body Suit Top, Mustard Ruffled Top, Purple Pinstripe Vest
Example Two: Starter Athletic Girl Shirt, Neutral Punk Starter Top
Example Three: Starter Skater Guy Jacket, Warm Starter Rocker Girl Top
Example Four: Starter Skater Girl Jacket, Green Wool Top
Example Five: Starter Skater Girl Jacket, Green Spacey Body Suit Top

Female Goth Starter Skirt
Equip under
  • jackets, vests, shirts, skirts
Equip over
  • socks

User Image

The female goth starter skirts are on the pants layer. This means that these skirts will equip under other skirts. You cannot equip female goth starter skirts with pants or shorts.

Example Two: Neutral Starter Fantasy Straps, Neutral Starter Athletic Girl Shirt, Neutral Female Goth Starter Skirt

Item Layers
Post Four: Head Items

From baseball caps to sacred leaves, Gaia head items are very diverse. There are many, many head items to choose from and you can equip lots of head items on your avatar at the same time.
Want to know how a head item layers? It's hard to tell just by looking at it. The best way to find out what layer an item is on is by previewing it in either the gold shops or the marketplace. Equip some head items on your head and see how the item layers with them.

I cannot possibly list all of the head items on Gaia. My list will include a few commonly used head items to get you started.

§Regular Hats
Regular hat: Grey Beret
These hats are the typical hat. When in doubt, if it looks like a normal hat, the item probably lies on this layer. Don't be fooled. A lot of the newer hats fall on higher layers.

Examples of regular hats
Grey Beret, White Beret, Green Beret, starter pirate bandanas, traveller caps, field caps, scott hats, Ian's Hat, gunner hats,

§General Head Item Layers

I have to apologize, this is the best format I can think of for head items. I will not name the layers. Instead, I have grouped items of similar layers. The items found at the top of the list are on the lowest layer. The items equip on higher layers as you move down the list.

Examples of how to read this list:
  • The Colonial Bonnet and Maid Headband are grouped in the same line. This means that the two items are on the same layer. You cannot wear both items at the same time. The Maid Headband will unequip the Colonial Bonnet.
  • The Red 90s Visor is found closer to the beginning of the list than the Green Silly Hat. Restating that sentence, the Green Silly Hat is lower on this list than the Red 90s Visor. This means that the Green Silly Hat will equip over the Red 90s Visor.
  • I've noted that "goggles" are on the same layer as "crowns." This means that, for the most part, a random goggle item and a random crown item will not equip at the same time. For example, the Brass Raving Goggles are on the same layer and will not equip with the Gold Tiara. It's just a general rule of thumb. As you know, items equip on all different layers so not all crowns and goggles are on the same layer.

Layering List for Head Items
The list is still under construction. I will add more items and make a better format. Until then, the list is still usable. All items listed are in correct order.

- Headband, glamrock headbands, tennis headbands,

{Regular Hats}

Hats items:
- 90s visors, Maid Headband, complex headbands, paper crowns, Colonial Bonnet
- Holly Crown
- sweet lace headband, quartz headbands, various headphones, baseball caps, shade hats (paper), Nurses Hat, Green Silly Hat, Red Silly Hat, Blue Silly Hat,
- goggles, crowns, tiaras
- flippy hats
- sweet alice bows,
- frilled hats

- Laurels, Golden Laurels, Silver Laurels

Hairpin Items:
- Sacred Leaf, skull hairpins, Elegant Blue Ribbon, Fancy Pink Ribbon, Golden Yellow Ribbon,
- Decorative Daisy,
- Sakura Blossom Hairpin, oval hairpins, heart hairpins, ritzy feather fascinators,
-

Post Six: Neck Items

§ Necklaces
User Image

Necklaces equip around the neck. You don't have to worry about their layering all too often unless the necklace is long.
Equip under
  • vests, jackets, ties, scarves
Equips over
  • shirts

This means that your vest or jacket might block your necklace from view if their collars are close to the neck. Be careful.

Examples of regular necklaces
Maid Collar Necklace, burnished kukui necklaces, bar necklaces, quartz necklaces, anti-fashion anti-accessories, ritzy pearl necklaces
Examples of "necklaces" that layer differently:
Examples of other items that layer like "necklaces":
  • gold mountain ties, polyester neckties,

Example Two: Gold Mountain Tie (Black Heart)
Example Three: Gold Mountain Tie (Black Heart), White Bowtie
Example Four: Neck Ruffle, Black Tie

§Ties and Bowties
User Image

Ties and bowties equip around the neck and over necklaces. Ties and bowties are on the same layer and cannot be worn together.
Equip under
  • vests, jackets, scarves
Equip over
  • necklaces, shirts

Normal Examples:
  • Bluegray Tie, Black Tie, Red Tie, zoot suit ties,

Ties and bowties that behave oddly:
  • gold mountain ties and polyester neckties equip just like necklaces

Other items that behave like Ties and Bowties:

§ Scarves
User Image
Scarves equip around the neck and keep your avatar looking nice and toasty. (: Many items equip on the scarf layer, but don't look like scarves.
Equip over
  • ties, bowties, necklaces, jackets, vests, shirts

Normal Examples: winter scarves,
Scarves that behave oddly:
Other items that behave like Scarves: Courted Ruff, Elegant Snowy Cravat

Item Layers
Post Seven: Jacket

§ Jackets
Example of the typical jacket: Cream Woven Abalone Button Blazer

Jackets equip on the torso. Jackets can have long sleeves or short sleeves. Jackets can often be found by searching the word "coat" also.
Equip under
  • capes, scarves
Equip over
  • ties, bowties, necklaces, vests, shirts, belts, skirts, pants

For the most part, jackets aren't as deceptive as other items. Most jackets layer just like... jackets.
Open jackets are often more useful than pullovers or zipped up jackets because they allow the shirt to show. This is very useful when trying to balance colors around an avatar.
Keep in mind that pullovers and zipped up jackets will most likely cover up your necklace. If you want to add color at the neck, a scarf may be your best choice.

Note:
Some short sleeve jackets will cut off shirt sleeves.

Normal Examples:

Jackets that behave oddly:
  • Starter Skater Guy Jacket, Starter Skater Guy Jacket: See post two for details. Both items layer like skirts.

Other items that behave like Jackets:

§ Capes

Capes drape over shoulders and often fall down to the feet.
Equip under
  • parts of scarves
Equip over
  • ties, bowties, necklaces, vests, shirts, belts, skirts, pants

Capes have an odd relationship with scarves. Part of the scarves become hidden while other parts appear above the cape.
{examples}

Odd Scarves
  • Ragged Ugly Scarf: Equips on the necklace layer, tie layer and scarf layer all at once.
PostPosted: Sun Aug 23, 2009 3:19 pm

Item Layers
Post Eight: Vests

§ Vests

Vests equip on the torso and are usually sleeveless.
Equip under
  • jackets
Equip over
  • necklaces, shirts, belts, skirts, pants, socks

Examples of Regular Vests
pinstripe vests, tavern wench's bustiers, dapper gent's vest, that 90s vests, lovely genie vests, wrinkled vests, starter pirate vests,

Special Mentions
  • Some vests layer under other vests. These items still follow the same rules as regular vests. They just have the added option of being able to layer underneath other vests. They really make for some unique combos. :}
    Examples:

biancamella and raider garment and spirited vest

  • Starter military vests equip like jackets. See post four for more details.
  • The tavern wench cinchers used to layer over tavern wench bustiers. This is no longer possible. Both items are on the regular vest layer.

    Post Nine: Shirt

    § Shirts

Shirts equip on the torso. Picture any shirt in real life and you can probably find something close to it on Gaia.
    Equip under:
      Jackets, vests, necklaces
    Equip over:
      gloves, belts, skirts, pants, socks
    Cannot equip with
    • dresses

    Examples of Regular Shirts
starter rocker guy tees, starter polos, dont ask dont tell shirts, complex shirts, mehTRO T with cross shirts

    {pics}

    § Undershirts

These shirts are tricky items. Their names do not always make it obvious that they layer under other shirts.
    Equip under:
Jackets, vests, shirts, gloves, belts, necklaces
    Equip over:
      skirts, pants, socks

    Examples of undershirts
wool tops, baseball undershirts, traveller undershirts, Nartian Rock (Jumper), Queen Bee (Dress),

    {include longjohns and body suits?}

    Special Mentions

The spacey body suit tops behave differently from other undershirts. Spacey body suit tops layer under skirts and pants as well as Jackets, vests, shirts, gloves, belts, necklaces.

Some shirts will layer under other shirts as long as the top shirt has no sleeves. Spacey body suit tops will layer under these shirts, while the other undershirts will not.
    Examples
    • starter athletic girl shirts, starter skater guy jackets, starter skater girl jackets, starter urban guy vests (as explained in post three)
    • Long Black Sparkle top

    § Dresses

Dresses equip on the torso and over the hips and legs. Dresses come in a variety of lengths. Some dresses allow you to wear skirts and pants under them, while others do not.

Long dresses can be a quick way to cover the whole avatar. However, your avatar ends up looking like every other avatar in the same dress. Be sure to accessorize, accessorize~
Some belts equip over shirts. Those belts will also equip over dresses. These belts make good accessories.

Dresses that Do Not Equip With Pants
    Equip under
    • scarves, jackets, vests
    Equip over
    • undershirts, gloves, belts, socks, shoes
    Cannot equip with
    • shirts, skirts, pants

    Examples
    • female starter peasant dresses, peasant tops, daisy's dresses

    Dresses that Equip With Pants
    Equip under
    • scarves, jackets, vests
    Equip over
    • undershirts, gloves, belts, skirts, pants, socks, shoes
    Cannot equip with
    • shirts

    Examples
    • picnic sun dresses, ritzy beaded dresses, Dress of the Swan, tea time waitress dresses, Ruffled Pink Dress

    Special Mentions
    • tea time waitress dress: These dresses cannot equip with necklaces.

    Item Layers
    Post Ten: Gloves

    § Gloves

Gloves equip on the hands and/or arms. Most glove items cover both arms at the same time, but some gloves will equip on one arm at a time.
    Equip Under
    • jackets, shirts, bracelets

    Equip Over:
    • undershirts (see post nine)

    Examples of Regular Gloves
fantasy bracers, those 90s gloves, lex's gloves (F), peasant gloves (F), Felicia's Gloves, Brown Gloves, Black Gloves, White Gloves, pompom gloves, Leviathan's Grace (Gauntlets), Elftech Gloves

    Special Mentions

    • Lots of gloves layer over regular gloves. For now, i'll nickname them, "Second Gloves". These gloves layer over shirts and jackets.
      Examples:
      • medical gloves, Spartan Gloves, professional grade oven mitts, ribbon luv sleeves

    • Nitemare gloves layer over Regular Gloves and under Second Gloves.
      {example}
    • Spirited Gloves layer under regular gloves and over undershirts.
      {example}
    • Wingding Sleeves layer under Regular Gloves and Spirited Gloves. Will layer over spacey body suit tops. Cannot be worn with other undershirts.

    § Bracelets

Bracelets equip on the wrist. Some equip on both wrists at the same time. Others equip on one wrist at a time.
    Equip Under
    • Jackets, Shirts, Second Gloves

    Equip Over:
    • Undershirts (post 9), Regular Gloves

    Examples of Regular Bracelets

    Special Mentions

    • Second Bracelets
These bracelets equip over Regular Bracelets. They equip over jackets and

    Item Layers
    Post Eleven: Belts

    § Belts
Belts equip around the waist. Just as they can add a nice finishing touch in real life, they do the same for Gaia outfits.
    Equip under
    • jackets, vests, shirts
    Equip over
    • undershirts, skirts, pants

    Examples of regular belts
starter pirate sashes, leather belts, glamrock belts,

    Higher belts
Some belts layer above regular belts. There are a lot of different belt layers. I will list examples of each layer along with the other types of items that they layer over or under.
Remember that if two belts are on two different layers, they can be worn at the same time. If two belts are on the same layer, they cannot be worn at the same time.

    Second Belts
    Examples:

    Third Belts
    Examples:

    Fourth Belts
    Examples:

    Fifth Belts

    Sixth Belts

    Progressively higher layers:

    - Kung Fu Panda (Yellow Belt),
    - Kung Fu Panda (Blue Belt)
    - Jacked Belt, heart droop chain belts, galaxy belts,
    - Blade's White Belt, Wild West Holster
    - vice admiral's belts

    § Sashes

    Example: Bullet Belts
Sashes equip on the torso. They typically drape from one shoulder to the waist on the opposite side. They layer above many other items so they can be pretty easy to add to almost any outfit.
    Equip under
    • capes
    Equip over
    • jackets, vests, shirts, skirts, pants, belts (over the admiral layer, so over all belts I've seen so far)

    Examples of Sashes

    § Skirts

Skirts equip around the waist. Skirts come very long, very short, and all sorts of lengths in between.
A random note on skirts and the matching style. Skirts are very useful for adding color to the midsection (along with belts). When making matching avatars, skirts help fill in the distance between pants and shirts. Yes, our avatars are small and the distance isn't really that large... but skirts do make avatars look more interesting. And yes, guys can wear skirts too. ;] Look around the forums, you'll see a lot of male avatars wearing skirts.
    Equip under
    • Jackets, vests, shirts, belts, anklets
    Equip over
    • pants, leg warmers, socks, shoes

    Examples of Regular Skirts
snug balloon skirts, starter fantasy loincloths, Celebrity Miniskirt, pleated tennis skirts, basic skirts

    Special Mentions
    • Some skirts layer like pants.
      • Examples include: starter goth skirts, beatnik skirts, egyptian linen wraps, ruffled skirts (F),

    • Some items look like pants, but layer like skirts:
      • Cockerel's Waltz (Shorts), lyndexer's journal (all pant items),

    • Some shirts layer like skirts.
      • Starter Urban Guy Vest,
Starter Athletic Girl Shirt, Starter Skater Girl Jacket, Starter Skater Guy Jacket. (See post four for more details.)
