Although that should be obvious. On the grounds that it's Monday, (God, really?) I thought I'd leap out of my lurkerish status and start a finale thread. Anyhooo...
I liked this one. Despite the character death, and general dark themes, it was well thought-out, tied off some loose ends (ie Tosh in Doctor Who with the spacepig), and left a lot of room for development in the next series. Which they now have to do. Or I'll storm the BBC Wales headquarters. Pyscho Grey wasn't the most unexpected thing, but burying Jack alive came as a huge shock. I was hoping they'd build Torchwood on top of him and he'd dig his way out of the floor or something, but you can't have everything. And killing off Tosh and Owen pretty much simultaneously was poignant, even though it leaves a huge hole in the middle of the Torchwood team. Better that than have one pining away in the next series, although it makes me wonder who they'll bring in to replace them. The actress who plays Tosh did that whole scene in one take! Beautiful piece of acting. And we got to see a nicer side to Captain John. But not Jack's real name! Shame. Really. And we ended with the Jack/Gwen/Ianto love triangle. I'm a bit disappointed they've done nothing to resolve or explain that, not even made a start. It'll hopefully work itself out, now that there's only the three of them.
Anyway... What did you guys all think?

It's been a few days for you all in the UK.. I can see why nobody's attempted writing of this episode so far. I can honestly say that I cried my eyes out with this episode. Probably just as much or more than Doctor Who caused.
Okay, I just finished watching it.... the writing and acting was incredible. I didn't like Grey very much, but the idea that he would be angry at Jack set it up for an amazing storyline. It became even better when we found out that Grey was pretty much controlling John. Another thing I picked up was the forgiveness theme... it mirrors exactly what the Doctor did for *coughthatoneguy* in the DW season finale.
Jack and Grey finally meet after Jack has to go through all that pain and torment, both physically and emotionally.. and Jack forgives Grey, and then freezes him. The Doctor and youknowwho meet after the Doctor has to go through plenty of anguish, and the Doctor forgives him, before he dies. It's a very nice parallel, whether it was intended or not.
Okay, back to Torchwood. Gwen is holding up the team as best she can, and I really do admire her for that.. it's not like the previous times where she just barks orders at the police. Also, nice set-up with the first Torchwood and how he told them to freeze him so he wouldn't cross his own timeline. It was logical and so much better than Jack just avoiding himself and walking into Torchwood. Not to mention the memories would be better preserved so that he didn't get distracted by anything, or forget to come back at a certain time.
Tosh.. she was doing her job, gets fatally shot.. and then gets down that flight of stairs to the intercom to still help Owen. She never let on that she was hurt and dying; she never thought about herself. As she told Owen, "That's what I'm here for." ...I was already teary but I just broke down with that.
Owen knew it was the end for him.. he finally accepted death instead of running or trying to fight it. The 'white light' was an amazing concept (okay, from the radiation, but still..); it's the darkness he was so terrified of. He was so calm in saying 'it's okay'.... and again, I broke down crying all over again.
Okay.. good things. The acting: the best I've seen in a long time on Torchwood. Burn Gorman and Naoko Mori, especially have to be applauded for their scenes, as my crying increased the whole time. John Barrowman did a fantastic job too, despite how the actor who plays Grey seemed unconvincing to me. DX
Loose ends for quite some time have been sealed off, like Sky Seeker said.. the DW space pig confirms Tosh as having been on Doctor Who (AND we find out that it was a few weeks into being inducted into Torchwood; she wasn't still with UNIT). Also, the storyline with Grey has been finished, which effectively moves on the subplots from Jack's family. John Hart will probably turn up once next season if TPTB (the powers that be) want him to show up again... I don't think that will happen though.. everything's said and done.
Jack/Gwen/Ianto love triangle? o-O Perhaps, but I doubt it. In a review a few episodes back, I said that Jack had morals, unlike how Owen used to be in Season 1. Jack wasn't going to be involved with Gwen, when she had a boyfriend, or now that's she's married, despite the affection that he shows for her, because he's better than that. He's got standards. Gwen also has set standards through her relationship and love for Rhys. She's promised not to keep secrets from him, so much so that he's like an honorary Torchwoodian. xD Or something.
Ianto, however, has no significant other, and he's done pining for Lisa. Need I say more? xD
Okay, rant over. I think if the show isn't developed further, now, that I'll join Sky in storming BBC Wales. XD

I've been quiet about it on the "If you can't say anything nice..." principle. Although, to be fair, Owen's death scene was superb. 3nodding

It didn't actually me me cry. I almost did, at the very end, but not quite. It seemed a little odd that Grey called Jack 'Jack'. I mean... wouldn't he know Jack by his real name? It's really annoying me now.

I was thinking I'd make this thread if no one else did...
I enjoyed: every bit that had John in Tosh/Owen dieing. I didn't/don't want them to be dead (or, y'know, MORE dead) but the way they handled that bit.. <3
I really did not enjoy all that much kthxbai: Grey. Who was really not believable (to an extent) and didn't seem to be particularly well thought-out beyond "psycho evil brother". :/ Grey calling jack "jack". I noticed a couple times when he pointedly didn't call him Jack (I can't remember what he said) but then he went and did! D: the fanfiction. Must everyone write a cookie-cutter coda? (alliteraaaation!)
I hadn't thought of that parallel, though now it's in front of me it's obvious! And Richard_Swift? Pretty please? I, too, enjoy watching you deconstruct episodes. You spot all these tiny details that I don't but are interesting.

Wow. Just...wow. I'm not even sure if it was particularly good, but still... [Travis spends the better part of the hour thinking what to write]. Okay...
Points of Interest Tosh dies. Owen dies. Again. I'm guessing for good this time. Grey is the villain of this episode, rather than John. There are lots of explosions and whatnot. The monster at the beginning of Love and Monsters (the Hoix, I think it was called) makes an appearence. There are a hell of a lot of weevils.
I suppose this was one of these episodes where there are moments when one thinks "This is s**t" (all that trademark Chibnal silliness), and others "This is f**king brilliant! What great television" (Owen/Tosh death scene). But at the end, I felt that, overall, it was good, and all those crap moments could be excused simply because there were so many great ones. Plus magnificent acting all the way through. So yeah, I liked it.
(Oh, and Richard_Swift, please do write a review of yours. I need someone to argue with.)

Great episode, but why Tosh and Owen?!
OK, Owen, I could kind of see coming, but Tosh!
Their respective death scenes genuinely upset me (the last time I cried at a TV programme was A Day In The Death and the one before that was Voyage Of The Damned), and when Tosh asked Owen to stop screaming, it wasn't just her heart breaking, it was mine too. I sobbed like mad at that. I'm actually getting upset thinking about it now, over a month on. crying

I watched this with my friend. The entire end, we were both like gonk gonk gonk It's amazing at the sheer volume of epic sadness that RTD can cram into an episode. Even my boyfriend, who had never seen an episode of Torchwood was like, "Damn that's sad."
RTD YOU EVIL EVIL WRITER, YOU. crying
The worst part was Tosh's "You're breaking my heart!" and her goodbye video. ACK.
