The bath scene did make me jump first time though. That still doesn't get rid of the clicheic nature of it.

Is "clicheic" even a word? Anyway, I rather liked the episode; okay, this week there was f**k-all going on in the character development department, but seeing that most episodes so far in this series have been character-driven, I suppose there's nothing wrong with a bit of a plot for a change. From Out of the Rain wasn't very Torchwood, more 70's/80's BBC mystery show-type thing (like Sapphire and Steel, a show of which I have seen very little but of which this episode pretty much reminds me. Might have something to do with the fact that the writer of that show penned this episode.), but I liked it, and a little break from the story arc isn't necessarily a bad thing. Quite creepy as well Anyway, if you couldn't understand this somewhat messy review, which is understandable, it was pretty much positive. I'd give it...8/10.

I don't know if it's a word but you know what I mean.
Haven't they already done it loads in Classic Doctor Who?
Another thing, I don't understand what Capt. J.H. was doing in the circus in the first place? If it was when he was a rouge time agent, that was before he got his unkillable ability, because his "space hopper" burnt out after going back to the 21st century, I don't think he did much after the Dalek invasion and before the beginning of Torchwood Cardiff.

EVIL CLOWNS!! Why are clowns always evil??

AFAIK, Jack hopped back to pre-WWI and lived through all those years to the C21, when he set up (or possibly took over) Torchwood 4 (Cardiff).
Anyway, slightly more on topic, this episode reminds me very much of a set of D&D villains I have, who I have yet to run. The major difference being it's an actual circus, not a travelling show, and he doesn't steal souls but he feeds on them.

That's the one thing that you'd have to know ahead of time for it to make any sense. He even says he 'watched Rose grow up from a distance'. So technically he's got two pasts. The first one, with the Time Agents and stolen memories, leading up to meeting the Doctor, being pulled to present time, and then left stranded. Then he re-lives.. life... watches Rose, forms/takes over Torchwood Cardiff, and in the meantime joins the traveling group (as part of an assignment, but for who, exactly?)

And just like the last few episodes were about Owen's non-death, and then the last one about Gwen/Rhys and those issues... this one seemed to be more about Ianto and Jack than anything else. I didn't mind. I liked this episode, even if it wasn't the usual plot format.
And I have to say I really liked the Jack/Ianto angle in this one. They were both more relaxed, and even though character development really didn't happen, the acting was good. xD

Minor quibble, but I thought Cardiff was TW3? And that 4 was missing? I'm not sure though, mind. I enjoyed this episode! Not a lot happened, but that didn't stop me liking it. Does anyone else reckon that between his being all liek *FANGASM* over all the old tech and his jokes about his father the master-tailor, we have Ianto-backstory? My pet-theory is he's in the wrong century, but I've not seen 2.12 yet, so I'm probably just embarassing myself here. smile

You can tell even more in season two that Ianto is so much smarter than he lets on, which is why I'm surprised he's still making coffee.
I don't think he's in the wrong century.. not really.. but I'd love to know more of Ianto's backstory. I used to hate him.. (and Owen).. but after Owen died I liked him a lot more (xDDD) and Ianto is really great once he got over Lisa the femmebot. XD

Well all this backstory has been explained. -> Ianto came from Torchwood London (Where Mather's cosine/Cyberwoman was), and Torchwood Cardif was there long before CJH arrived. The assignments were from those two freaky women.<- Ceribri: *edits for spoilers* stare stare Honestly, you should know better. Don't post about any episode that's happened past the one that's on the thread title.
I should simply delete this, but... you're very very lucky that I've already seen the episode you're posting about. My biggest pet peeve is spoiler stuff in the wrong places... stressed
