Background: Ka's mother was Arabic and his father, a German who's family had moved to Great Britain a couple of generations back. They met when his father was visiting the desert - more of a tourist trip than anything else. His mother was actually a guide for his small group, and their love grew slowly over the course of the trip. When it was time for him to leave, he begged her to return home with him ... and after several hours of pleading and his pointing out the benefits, she finally agreed. The move was a bit of a culture shock for her, but she was a strong woman and adjusted quickly enough. Soon, she found that she was pregnant and then that she would be having a son. The proud parents chose a more Arabic-sounding name for the boy, and planned to one day take him to see his mother's place of birth.
Ka's parents did know about the invasion of the aliens and so on, but they were of the camp who generally tended to believe "it can't happen to us". However, they were wrong. When Ka was six years old, tragedy struck. His parents both contracted the disease spread by the aliens and died from it. Neither of them had any close relatives, the closest being a young niece of his father who lived in America. Ka was soon shipped off overseas and has lived with this niece ever since.
The niece, however, wasn't at all prepared to raise a child and wasn't very observant on the whole. Ka grew up a bit wild, skipping school more often than not and running with various gangs on the streets. He doesn't talk much about this part of his life now, but it's generally assumed the blue hair and tattoos came from one of the gangs. Despite his tendency to never go to school ... Ka was actually incredibly smart. By the time he was ten, he could figure out how to take apart and put together again any sort of machine. And computers? He was a whiz kid. His niece was a software engineer for a large company and tended to leave her personal laptop more or less unguarded.
By messing around with it, Ka learned the ins and outs of computers as well and got into hacking. And so when he was selected as a candidate for SSoS, he chose to go into the Science division.
Personality: In general, Ka'hmesh is the type to stay pretty quiet and keep his opinions to himself. He's very confident in himself and his own abilities, he just doesn't go around bragging about it. Ka is very very protective of those he loves and not easily cowed or broken. He does have several issues lurking beneath the surface though. One reason he does hold so tightly to anyone close to him is because of the loss of his parents so early and then the lack of attention from their niece. At the same time, though, he hasn't ever really formed any major attachments before coming to SSoS, preferring to drift from one group of "friends" to another.
Interest: Science
Hobbies: Hacking, taking things apart and putting them together again, reading, playing the piano
Talent: Within a few minutes, generally, Ka can take apart just about any sort of machine, figure out how it works and put it back together again. Sometimes, the way he puts it back together even makes it work better than before.

Most of what Ka brought to school with him is the clothes on his back as well as a couple of changes of clothes. Other than that, he just has his things for school and a few small things that Farlest has given him at random times.

Farlest - Ka met the other boy while still on the boat on the way to the island. The two became fast friends, and lately that friendship has started to grow into more.
