I think Torchwood is BETTER than the new series of Dr Who. Torchwood is more exciting and action-packed than doctor who. The new DW series reminds me of 6 year olds with David Tennant action figures for some reason. All the episodes are the same- The doctor running around pointing his S screwdriver around and sparks flying off of things. With Torchwood it's different. I don't know why but (minus the gay kissing) I really enjoy it.

What's so bad about gay kissing?

Well at the beginning of series 2, they did overdo it a bit.

talk2hand each to their own i suppose... but yeah, I am almost preferring torchwood, though The Tennant does make a good argument for DW... but still.

I enjoy them both because Torchwood and Doctor Who both bring something different to the table. If both were the same it would be boring, for me at least. In Torchwood there is a lot of action and Jack uses force while the Doctor uses his mind instead of like what Jack does.

And all the DWs seem to be the same. NO good twists or good storylines, which is what made the old one good. It would be good if they made more Master episodes, instead of like one every four seasons... Like the old Pertwee ones, when there were like 4 master ones in a row.

Well, you're perfectly entitled to do so.

Obviously, I can't speak for everyone's childhood, but I number those spent mucking about with action figures as some of the most creative afternoons I've ever had. It taught me a lot about creating a story geared towards a group dynamic, voice acting and the sheer unfettered joy of escapism. In those days, I'd have LOVED a Doctor Who figure that didn't look like it had been put together in the dark by a horse.

This is where any "To each their own" stance has to go a bit wobbly, because I think you're doing a grave injustice to (some, at least) NewWho's writers. No one can deny that there's a fair amount of Sonic Screwdrivering and sparks going on, but aside from Things Blowing Up In A Diverting Way making for good telly, they're largely done to drive stories as different and finely-crafted as The Unquiet Dead, Father's Day, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl In The Fireplace, Human Nature/The Family of Blood, and Blink.

I freely admit that I'm just rattling off my favourites, but feel justified in doing do because they represent some of the best telly it's ever been my good fortune to eat my tea in front of. While checking titles, I discovered it's largely the same writers cropping up.

I'm singling out Blink, because it's the best example of the type of episode that cause your theory to fall down a bit. It's one of those in which, due to the fact that the principle cast can't be everywhere, The Doctor's hardly in it. This is done excellently in Blink as we only see him pontificating eerily from a TV screen and sat on the floor delivering my favourite line in the whole of the new series ever:

Splendour
"This is my Timey-Wimey detector. It goes 'Ding!' when there's stuff. And it can fry an egg at ten paces...whether you want to or not. I've learned to steer clear of hens. It's not pretty When They Blow."

As far as my tastes are concerned, this ridiculous, toungue-in-cheek, glib little snippet of dialogue is easily more preferable to much of Torchwood, though to be fair I'm mostly referring to the all the melancholy navel-gazing and snarling.

Just out of interest, what is it about the gay kissing that mars your enjoyment of the show?

One of the best things the writer or writers of an ongoing narrative can do is hoard the interesting baddies. Make their appearance more of an event.

It's good storytelling sense.

It reminds me of that because that seems to be the targeted audience. Imagine a little boy playing with Dalek and Cyberman toys and making them fight each other. That little boy is Rustle T. Davis and the result is "Army of Ghosts/Doomsday"
That episode on the other hand was quite good for actually surprising me -and everyone else, rather than sticking huge pictures on the Radio Times.

Yeah, those ones are good, but episodes like 42 and The Lazarus Experiment, they were just rubbish...

It's just that they over did it. Besides, those episodes were crap anyway.

I'm surprising myself a fair bit by admitting this, but actually yeah, Torchwood > Doctor Who. (that is, comparing series 2 of TW and 3 of DW). TWs2 has had only one episode that was I remember being Ho-Hum ish about, but series 3 (while it also had some great eps) had a lot that.. I really wasn't that mad keen on. Well, s4 on Saturday, maybe it'll changed.

Do we have to pick? I don't wanna pick. WHY ARE YOU MAKING ME PICK?!

Ahem...Both are wildly entertaining in my opinion, but they occupy entirely different but perfectly equal areas of my fandom. I mean, a lot of DW is good for a giggle, or a cry, or hyper-speed-techno-babble-fun and it's basically an escape. Different times, different planets, you know, I can forget about my problems for an hour or so.
TW is more down-to-earth (no pun intended). Instead of helping me to escape the world it invites me to analyze it. I feel that TW more adequately protrays the human condition, that it calls into question whether or not our reactions to certian things we encounter are justified. It challenges the norm with the homosexuality (which is probably not that big a deal in the UK but we in the US are prudes when it's hetero). Not that I find anything wrong with the homosexuality, let's get that straight right now. But overall I find TW to be more...real. It's exploring how we live in this planet right now, not 500 years in the future, not colonizing other planets, right now. Everything is relevant to right here, right now. Everything can be taken as a metaphor (as soon as I think of one, my brain's dead right now).

So, what I'm trying to say, I guess, is that trying to figure out which one is better is almost like choosing between two genres. Sure, they're both set in the same universe and they're both scifi but they're on different ends of the spectrum. I don't favor one over the other but I don't acknowledge that they're definately equal either. They're simply at the top of the list in two different columns and should not be compared directly.

doctor who is nice because there are only two main characters to focus on, so we learn a more intimate background about the characters. In torchwood everyone is a mystery.

Both are interesting and do bring different things to the table.

Though torchwood is more of a drama/soap opera.
And doctor who is a silly version of the twilit zone

I have to say that I'm a Torchwood girl myself and have been for a while. I like Torchwood for its witty one liners and interesting plot lines, while the last few episodes of Doctor Who have, in my mind, left something to be desired as far as the writing goes. I mean its wizz bang, but I just wish for once that they would get off Earth (or its futuristic equal) and really explore the universe. I mean, at least Torchwood is meant to be set on earth!

And I really wish that the Doctor would face a problem that can't be solved with the bloody sonic screwdriver. I am getting so sick of that thing!

Also I have a problem with them killing off my favorite character (No, I don't mean Rose. As far as she's concerned, I was really glade to see the end of her. But then She has to go and come back for season 4, I mean, what the hell is this? Are they so desperate to get viewers that they have to bring back probably the weakest character in the Whoverse? )(Sorry, whited for spoilers of S4 Ep1) I mean that Master. Finally they bring someone in who can rival the Doctor in both character and knowledge, and what do they do? Kill him off again. Its mind bogglingly stupid!

(Also please note, my opinions of Rose are my own. I am entitled to them and I have followed the rules so you don't have to read them if you don't want. Therefore, you can't get me for saying anything bad.)

Sorry, I just looked over my last post and realized that I went into a bit of a rant there. I just stopped thinking. Sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't mean to.
