I've actually been wondering about this for a long time: what are they like? Does any have stories about them? Would you hope to experience them for yourself someday?

My friends and I are actually planning a trip to Japan this May, so I'm looking forward to the kinds of hotels we'll be staying in. Most of the time we'll be staying in the Hostels, which is kind of like a dorm house at college, only for travelers. It's only $25 - $35 bucks per person a night at one of those. Although we might also do a Temple Stay and an Onsen Hotel along the way. There's also the fabled Capsule Hotels, which are basically tubes with all of the hotel accomodations in them; those seem to be all the rage recently, although they can only accomodate males right now.

When I went to Japan a couple years ago with my dad, we stayed in a few different hotels, since we went to a few different cities.
We stayed in a really expensive, fancy one while we were in Tokyo. It was huge. It had escalators in it, too. XD There were obviously elevators, but they were all managed by female employees who would painfully try to ask you what floor you wanted in English, and push the buttons for you (though I've heard that it's a common occurance anyway).
We also bought a five-dollar banana, just to say we did. That was one fancy banana.
It's too bad we didn't stay in anything special other than generic, American-style hotels, so there wasn't anything wonderfully unique about them, but hotels in Japan are different enough anyway that it was an entertaining experience.
If I ever go to Japan again, I hope I can stay somewhere really interesting.

Washington hotel in akihabara. Close to Rajio Kaikan, close to all the electronics depots and duty-free stores, and the subway is real close so everything's easy to get to.
Plus the Denny's in japan is the s**t. Denny's in US is like a secondhand diner compared to them.
but if i could... i'd try a capsule hotel.
just to see what it's like to feel like a tampon. XD

I actually stayeed with a friend when I went to japan, which made my stay a whole lot cheaper than it would have been otherwise. Although, the Hilton in Tokyo looks pretty cool... sweatdrop And my friend said that she and her friends were planning a trip to stay at the Tokkyo Disney Resort Hotel (I don't know what it's actually called, although that might be the name) because apparently it's really fancy... So I don't really know what they are like, but I want to go back to Japan some day so maybe I'll find out!

When I was in Japan, I spent most of the month in my grandparents' house which was very nice. But we did take a week-long tour of the island, which was pretty awesome. The first night we stayed in a business hotel, which the rooms we had were fairly small and had just enough room for a couple beds and a bathroom. But it was very quiet, as I recall.
The next few nights we stayed at this really nice hotel on Lake Toya called the Sun Palace. The front wasn't a whole lot to look at, but it had a remarkable garden by the lake! I had a mini photoshoot when the sakura were falling of the trees, and I got a ton of other photos of the outdoor water garden. There were fireworks on the lake every night, and had a huge international buffet brunch thing every morning. The Sun Palace's main attraction is in the hot springs and indoor waterpark they've got going on, which was very nice for me because there weren't a ton of people everywhere in the "off" season. Of course, to get to the pool I had to walk through the onsen area, and the number of naked ladies for which I was largely unprepared. sweatdrop But apparently a large group of boys were scheduled to stay for one of the days my family was there, and I was the only girl in a big group of guys. One of them even had the courage to say hello in English to me! xd
But aside from that, other notable personal experiences of mine at the Sun palace were that I badly hurt my ankle, and I discovered that there's a Lake Toya Monster. Freaky little solid ripple in the water that moved away from land...It was visible and solid for like, ten minutes. Weird.

that's a good question, I've always wondered myself if it would be best to stay in an apartment or exchange family if I go there for a long time, but if I just visited I'm not to aware of hotels
