Well, with all this, Gary being Oak's son doesn't dismiss the idea that your rival in G/S/C isn't Giovanni's kid. Now, Jishin's model would make perfect sense is this, so I'll use hers.

Oak has a daughter. That daughter falls in love with Giovanni. Together they have Gary/Daisy (Is that the right name?). But why does it seem like Giovanni and Oak are on different sides? And why are Giovanni's children with Oak instead of him?

Maybe because something hapened to Oak's daughter/Giovanni's wife. This may, in fact, the the event that made Giovanni into such an evil person. Oak would not trust this evil man with his grandchildren, so he took the kids. Now, after his wife is gone, Giovanni may have looked for solace from someone like himself, evil. This woman and he had a son. That would be your rival. Growing up with such disrespect for pokemon coming from both his parents, he becomes evil himself and this temperament is shown by his actions in G/S/C.

Thus, your rival is Gary and Daisy's half-brother and Giovanni's son. But not Oak's Grandson.

People have indeed argued that. whee Me, I don't think so .... well .... actually, given their respective attitudes, maybe they are related.

Reminds me of a theory I once heard that Misty is Brock's non-squinty sister.... (think about it: his mom is named Mizuho [mizu = Japanese for water], loves Water Pokemon, has red hair.....) Another thing to think about. eek
