Im abstaining from a reaction til I see the prices. But I agree with you purely based upon principal.
Im also interested to see how they go about processing all this. Its entirely likely that it'll be ridiculously easy to sniff out the base movie and download em to one's computer. I didnt see the need to explore this with the old movies so I dont actually know how viable an idea that is.
But Id much rather play a dollar's worth of credits, yoink the movie, burn to a dvd and watch over-and-over-and-over again on my HDtv than pay a dollar for watching a movie that will go away once I close the window.
Honestly. paying for movies online is one of the future's of film entertainment. Movies still in the theatres were available on a special pay-per-view channel in the hotel I stayed in over the summer. Its just a hop-skip-and-a-jump from that to offering them online. Sony and Warner Brother's may be using Gaia as a testing ground to get some numbers and feedback (and a bit of revenue in the process) for such online viewing. Its more likely than not that said companies approached Gaia, not vice versa.

Winterberries, they're starting to introduce new, more modern movies into the Gaia Cinema, like The Matrix. In the future, there will be both free movies and movies you have to pay for.
Incidentally, this kind of makes me mad too. What pisses me off the most is how much Gaia is catering to the community that has money. Free items with Gaia Cash Cards [which aren't accessible everywhere]. Free items with Cash Shop Purchases. Testing the Gaia toolbar to everyone who has the money to buy collectibles or Cash Shop Items. A lot of Gaia's community is made up of students, including those in university or college, or adults who just don't have that much money. I understand Gaia is trying to encourage those with money to give more, but it still pisses me off. Why the hell has Gaia become so freaking commerical? At least in the past, when they still had server costs, they still tried to treat us all the same... Now it just seems like if you don't have money, screw you. :-/

Ugh, I completely agree. Unless they have a truly awesome movie, I'll be happy to just rent the movie and watch it in the confort of my home.
@Chibi: I must say, I agree with everything you said. I hate to sound like an oldbie here, but I miss the Gaia that just wanted to have fun, y'know?

If they didn't charge for movies, they'd pay for them to keep them free to us. That'd cost more than most things. Really though, what's the big deal? So they charge for movies? If you don't like it, it's not like anyone is forcing you to use it.
Regarding Gaia being so commercial, I think it should be pointed out that Gaia is a buisness. They have employees who work hard. And who wants to work for free? It was pointed out that a lot of people here are in university/college. And as someone that just graduated from university and is now working, I find my focus has changed drastically. I don't worry about what exam grade I'll receive, I worry about how much I make and my retirement. I worry about my insurance and all sorts of things I didn't worry about as a student. And no doubt those employed by Gaia are worrying about those things too. They'd be very silly if they didn't.

I do know that it is hard for Gaia to bring in enough money to run it, but I too miss the days when gaia was relatively non-commercial, and everything wasn't so money related.

Well, Gaia Interactive has employed a political figure for their finances. On Wiki, he did some other stuff for some pretty media heavy persons. Can't be too sure on it, since it is, indeed, Wikipedia. =.=
In any cause, I am very much against the movies being paid for. Gaia said that this site would always be free; however, with the latest investments, it is becoming more and more of a commercial site where in order to get the latest and greatest items, you have to invest in some form on currency to get said items.
I'd rather watch the movies that they are showing here for free on my telly.

Okay, guys same thing is happening with Artix Entertainments line of online games (Adventure Quest, Dragonfable, and Mech Quest)...
But here's the thing, Gaia does need to pay their employees who work hard just so WE can enjoy the website for pretty much free. And if you don't want to pay for a movie, just don't watch it. If you don't want to pay for Monthly Collectibles, just don't. If you don't want to pay for Gaia Cash, just don't. Simple fixes.

I understand that they're working for pay too. I understand that they have bills to pay. I understand that if I don't want to pay for it, then I don't have to.
What ticks me is that it's just sounds like such a sleazy, underhanded way to get even more money. Gaia is absolutely catering to the people who have money. A lot of people don't have money to just drop.
There's nothing wrong with that, in general. But if you're going to charge money do be able to do little things on the site, then what's the point? I don't see it stopping at the Cinema's, either. Are they going to start charging for you to participate in certain quests? Or play certain puzzles in Jigsaw? Where do you draw the line?
If you think that's a little far fetched, remember that they just got done telling us that watching the movies in the Cinemas would be free. Then almost immediately, they take that back to say they're charging for some.
I figure, between the promotions they have, the gift-store, the cash cards, the MC's, the sponsors, and the fact that Disney pretty much has them by the nutsack, they could do without charging for movies in the Cinemas. I don't think they're breaking the bank to keep this site afloat.

Kain-Senpai

What exactly isn't free? The most expensive item to buy on Gaia was Kaya the tiger. Cost 25 bucks to get. And now it's down to 12K. Down from 100K. That's a huge drop. And cash items? Not bad either. I've not seen anything above 22K. Again, not bad. And other things are quite a bit cheaper. So what great extremely expensive items are you referring to? The WTF hat which has dropped about 60K in price?
I think the posts that say "I'd rather watch the movies on tv/rent the movies" are great. Because who's making you watch and pay for movies on Gaia? No one.
