I saw this exact post on frihost forums Quote: " I have seen this in many post, and dicided to open a thread about it. What do people mean when they say they believe things happen for a reason Me not dying now will be the reason I go home tonight and kick our cat. Me dying now will be the reason I don't go home tonight and don't kick our cat. Well then dying and not dieing happens for a reason (as far as our cat goes) " Kinda made me think a bit. this was my reply Quote: "They say that because a lot of people rarely belive in "coincedince" and a lot of people believe in predestination, at least to some degree. Any religious person believes that everything in life woudl happen for a reason, that gives them a reason to go on, believing that there is a reason to go on. I can't believe that. I think too much, which leads me to think that the macrocosm doesn't give a damn if I am breathing or not. Within one billion years everyone is going to be long gone and dead, so there is no reason other than my own self interest that drives me. There's also the fact that everything that happens now effects the future, which gives people the illusion that it was "meant" to happen, when, if it didn't happen, then something different would simpyl happen." and what's your opinion?

I personally don't believe that either, because people can make concious decisions. They aren't robots, and they can think for themselves, enabling them to set their own path. They are able to decide for themselves what their life is going to be like, and they have the power to change it for themselves. So it's not coincidence, but it's not "destiny" either.

You won't have eyes tonight. You won't have ears or a tongue; you will wander the underworld blind, deaf and dumb... I think it's pretty silly to believe things happen for a reason. That sort of implies there's no such thing as probability theory or statistics. ...and all the dead will know: this is Hector, fool who thought he killed Achilles.

I do think things happen for a reason. gonk
Not every little thing, mind you, but larger events in life.
Here's my little catch, though. I think we chose for these things to happen before we were incarnated. Soooo...it's free will, even though it may not seem it at the time. sweatdrop

I think there's a sort of hand that guides everything, but in a manner that's not overly obvious.
For instance, say everything is predetermined and we actually have no free will or say in what happens in our lives. How would we ever know? We think we have choices, but how do we know we aren't predestined by *something* to choose whatever we choose, even if we're choosing something in an attempt to spite the hand that guides us?
It's kind of confusing, but I think it's a possibility.
I, personally, believe that everything that happens to me happens for a reason as an opportunity to learn a lesson or become a better person.

Not everything, no. But I think some things are.
Mainly 'cause, with all the s**t that's happened in the last two years of my life, I should have been dead a hundred times over, but I'm not, therefore I'm convinced something wants me alive.
But if everything were predetermined, you'd think people would figure it out after a while. "Hey, I've been trying to make my life go in this direction for years, yet everything keeps happening to make me do something else. Wtf?"
