SDRP Academy: POL 101 Spring 2015 Information

In Character | OOC | POL 101 Information | Campus | Directory | Catalog

What is the SDRP Academy?
The SDRP Academy is a special sort of RP where it's all about teaching players how to Role Play. Since this is the School of Dedicated Role Players we're offering an extensive catalog of quality courses in a persistent RP world where you can hone your skills and generally hang out with other guild members in an academic setting.

Most of the threads regarding the Academy can be found in the SDRP Academy Subforum and the Guild's main forum, such as the latest PSY 101 Winter/Spring 2015 class.

Here are some additional key sources of information about the SDRP Academy:

Message from the Dean
Thank you for expressing interest in the SDRP Academy. This thread will hold all that you need to know about the first ever POL 101 class prior to the class starting! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to comment in this thread or PM Watervoir for more information.

About the teacher: Watervoir
Watervoir started out freeform roleplaying in a guild on Gaia in 2007 and currently runs the fantasy adventure roleplay Blue Caravan in Gaia's Barton Town. She enjoys character development and inventing plots. She is one of the vice captains of the guild and a Gaia Site Moderator on Gaia's roleplaying forums (Barton Town and its subforums) and the Gaia Guilds Network. Her introduction thread can be found here.

  • Riven Fannars
First he was a guard for the SDRP Summer Games of 2012, and now he is the teacher of the first POL101 class. Riv doesn't know how he got so roped up in SDRP, but it isn't his style to complain (not that he has any complaints)! Beneath his casual and fun-loving exterior, he has the heart and motivation to impart necessary knowledge for the class and didn't think twice about taking up the job. Looking for some excitement in your life? Riv is your man.

About POL 101

From the Course Catalog:
Quote:
Political Science
This department focuses on role playing itself - the core skills needed to work within common role playing systems and standards to collaboratively tell stories and achieve goals.

POL 101: Introduction to Political Science - This course teaches the very basics of what it is to Role Play with a focus on terminology, mechanics, and etiquette.

POL 101 is a little bit of everything with roleplaying. This course will take you through the staple knowledge required for roleplaying: searching, applying, and ultimately posting in a roleplay. It will cover what goes into making a character for a roleplay, how to write an introductory post and your typical roleplay post, and how to interact with fellow roleplayers. The focus will be on roleplaying in forums and, in particular, on Gaia.

By the end of the course, you will be primed to step foot into the world of roleplaying and have the confidence to roleplay comfortably. Even if you already knew how to roleplay, chances are this course will serve as a good chance to further analyze your own skill, experiences, and enjoyment, in an effort to improve them. This course is also the prerequisite for several other SDRP Academy courses, so it is pretty important!

How To Apply

    Basic Requirements
Our aim is to provide roleplaying education and experience to as many prospective and continuing roleplayers as possible, so it will be rare for us to turn down a student applicant. However, to ensure smooth running of this class, we do require that a few criteria be met of our POL101 students.

        As a student, you must:
        • be able to check the thread at least once every two days
        • be able to make a post in the classroom roleplay thread at least two times a week
        • be active in the class's dedicated OOC thread.
        • have the patience and enthusiasm to learn and try out new things

You will notice that some of these rules are a little stricter than the base rules available in the How to Apply: Students, Teachers, Faculty thread. This is because at this time, a subgoal for this class at this is to keep the ball rolling so as to best emulate a real roleplay.

If you cannot meet these requirements at this time, please feel free to withhold applying to the class and participate in future runs of this course.

New Student Registration + POL101 course registration
The target number of students for this class is 12 8 (Oct 13, 2015 update). The actual number of slots may be more or less depending on the interest. Slots are first come first serve. The deadline to apply is one week from now, at the end of the day on Wednesday, September 30, 2015.

Enrolling in the SDRP Tutoring Academy is fast and easy. Just PM the Registrar (SDRP Registrar) with your completed application (form below) using the subject: SDRP Academy New Student + POL 101 Enrolment. The Registrar (SDRP Registrar) will place you in the POL class and you will be placed on the class roll. You will get a PM reply to notify you of this and any further instructions necessary.

Please note that your application is subject to being circulated among SDRP Education Staff.

See our Course Catalog for a list of our current and upcoming courses.

Some of you may have been enrolled in previous SDRP Academy classes and recognize the first half of this form as you have completed it before. As it has been a long time since some of your applications first came in, are requesting that all applicants fill out the form in its entirety again so we can make sure our information on you are up to date.

Note that "Link to your student transcript:" and "Course you are registering for:" are already completed for you.

In POL 101, you will be required to play a character (and not yourself). You will be creating your character's profile in the class as part of the learning process, but you are required (as stated in the form) to submit a short description of your character idea.
