OFFICIAL START DATE: Saturday, March 14, 2015 ALL currently enrolled students will receive a reminder from the registrar. It still isn't too late to sign up!!
Welcome to the SDRP's flagship Workshop Series - the SDRP Academy. This is a special sort of RP where it's all about teaching players how to Role Play. Since this is the School of Dedicated Role Players we're offering an extensive catalog of quality classes in a persistent RP world where you can hone your skills and generally hang out with other guild members in an academic setting. The guild's more active, advanced members will serve as the faculty running classroom RPs which are really workshops designed to teach various role play related topics. Around them is (will be) a frame RP in which students can interact with each other, faculty, and staff on the campus of said academy. The campus (subforum) is currently under construction but you can jump into the first class (this thread) and get in on the ground floor as we put this thing together.
All students will start in this character creation workshop (PSY 101) where they will create their characters for the RP and then may choose to go to another class or hang out on campus.
In Character Intro:
Two months after receiving a mysterious acceptance letter to a university you had never heard of you found yourself, for whatever reason, traveling a good distance to attend its new student orientation. When you arrived at the address on the invitation though it was not at all what you had expected. There was just a small, weathered building in the middle of nowhere, hardly large enough to keep a shop in let alone a university. But the crest on the faded sign swinging above the door matched the one on the acceptance letter and this was the right address. Besides, you had come all this way, may as well check it out.
Opening the door revealed something that could only be called magic (or a teleportation device). Inside the building was outside - and not the same outside you had just come from. This outside was picture perfect with a bright blue sky dotted in puffy clouds that looked painted on, only their movement making them real. The wall in which the door stood was a sturdy brick facade with a tall, white columned porch in colonial style. Beyond it was a grassy lawn bordered in other buildings of similar make. Cobbled pathways wound between them lined in lush landscaping heavy with fragrant flowers.
This was more like it. But you weren't given much time to appreciate the view as only moments after stepping through the door a blue haired old woman came shambling up to shoo you off the porch and into one of the neighboring buildings where she prattled on about the campus being a window to other worlds you had just begun to dream of. She didn't seem to listen to anything you may have attempted to say to her as she lead you through winding halls going on about the diverse student body.
Then the old woman opened a door to a small classroom containing a few other supposed students sitting in desks and looking as new as you were. The classroom itself was modest with simple white walls, floor, and ceiling tiles. Windows lined the back overlooking the green space from where you had just come and a large blackboard made up the right side wall. On the blackboard was written in a tight and somewhat awkward hand a simple message, "Welcome to PSY 101, otherwise known as New Student Orientation. Find a seat and draft up a quick introduction of yourself to share with the class."
Note: This introduction is left vague to allow for creativity in the characters attending the university. Have fun and don't be afraid to try something different.

The small class had come into the classroom, settling down in a desk of their choice. On the board was written 'Mr. Gazzy,' which was the name of their teacher. All the students stirred a little, the classroom being quiet for quite some time. After a few minutes, the office door opened and a young man stepped out, his eyes scanning the class. He quickly and quietly walked over to the desk which stayed in the center of the classroom.
"Hello, my friends!" He said happily, greeting the class. "My name is Mister Gazzy, and I will be your teacher for this course. I'm sure you all are familiar with what PSY 101 is, correct? This class is all about teaching the people 'up there'," he said, pointing upwards and looking up at the players, "that this is so much more than just a game!
"Now, I assume you all saw the note on the door about writing your introductions. I would like for each of you to stand up and read aloud your introduction." Gazzy smiled, sitting down in his chair and was ready to listen.

Looking around the class at the other students, Bryan was waiting for someone to go first. Brian was always the shy quiet type. But since it was a new school with new faces around him, he decided that it was time for a change."Immediately he raised his hand. Mr. Gazzy Sir? I would like to go first." Bryan then stood up and walked to the front of the class. "Hello everyone, My name is Bryan Myles. Forgive me if I do seem a little nervous, normally I would skip the first day of classes so that I wouldn't have to deal with introductions like this. Now, let me tell you a little bit about myself. When it comes to Physical Fitness, I strive to be at the top. Always prepared for anything to happen whether it'd be good or bad. I was taught at a very young age to expect the unexpected. Even if that meant something bizarre. The constant training to master my art is so that I can be physically fit should their need to be. You see, having a father that is a karate master isn't easy, especially for me, his son. My father is a loving father but also a strict one. Always making sure that I was ready for anything unexpected. As a teenager I was obsessed with being fit. I would join every kind of competition out there, from 5k runs to weight lifting. Now in my 20's I have become a master in hand to hand combat as well as with a samurai sword. Now I truly feel that should the need arise, I will be ready for anything. Just like my father taught me. This pretty much sums up all I can think of at the moment. I do looking forward to hearing from the rest of you, my classmates.

Archie’s thoughts were elsewhere while Bryan's introduction took place. He’d been tasked to apply for the Academy what seemed like ages ago and just received his acceptance letter in, more or less, the same manner. Based on the registrar’s appearance, Archie expected a more far more collegiate setting, with the trappings of a typical university campus; he'd prepared his best suit for the occasion. He should’ve known better, of course: role-playing, writing--however his mistress cared to put it--allowed room for a much larger beast of imagination to roam than to have one expect something so mundane. Was he ready for it, though?
Silence filled the room as the previous introduction was concluded. Taking this as his cue, Archie rose out of his seat, erecting his trim figure to its full height with the bearings of a seasoned soldier. Introductions may seem a daunting task to some, but first impressions determined character. Just what sort of person would he prove to be?
He cleared his throat.
“My name is Archibald Aloysius Twitch,” he began, his voice a crisp bass. “A native Bernadinian, I am no stranger to the city, however, I’ve done my fair share of travel around Perizha. Though, I must admit this... peculiar location marks a bold, new frontier, even for me. Currently, I am employed as Majordomo to Lady Thornwick Genmark; prior to my dedication to domestic servitude, I served twenty full years in Bernadine’s Royal Military. I’m here by instruction--though I can’t imagine why, as this is more of my mistress’ area of interest--but I look forward to completing the course as needed.”
Archie took his seat, once more, knowing that his introduction probably teetered the borders of vague and unsatisfactory. He’d only give what he deemed necessary for the first day. If anyone wished to know more, he’d reveal it as the course wore on.
Mirabelle floundered. She'd never really liked the first school day, but then who did? It was awkward and embarrassing, and everyone was glad when it was over. At least, she thought that it was like that for more people than herself. And she hoped it a little, because otherwise things would just be even more awkward for her.
Flustered, she listened closely to the first introductions that were made. Should she be taking notes? Probably not, this was the unimportant stuff, which meant that you didn't get to take notes because you had to remember it all by heart. Odd, wasn't it? People hardly ever noticed small important things like that, despite relying so heavily on everyone else conforming to the norms. Now, for example, if she forgot the names of the other students or didn't manage to learn them within a week, people would look at her oddly. And that was something she really didn't want to happen again.
Now the first introduction was done already, and she'd missed part of it because she'd been busy thinking again. But she remembered a little. The boy's name was Bryan, that was probably the most important thing, and she remembered that. For now, at least. Breathing out slowly, she tried to focus on the next person to arrive. Another boy, and another person who was older than her. Surely, that had to become awkward eventually. Maybe. If she was unlucky. Again. He said he was a native Bernadinian, and she found herself sidetracked with trying to remember what a Bernadinian was. She couldn't remember, because there was just so much-.... and then the silence had fallen again, and the boy sat down. Did that mean it was her turn? It must.
Taking a deep breath and trying to fight down the heat rushing to her cheeks, which always happened when she felt flustered and self-conscious, which was awful because it just made her even more embarrassed, Mirabelle stood up. "Umm... Hi?" The silence returned even more loudly, pressing against her as everybody's eyes seemed to seek her out. Curses! Hurriedly, she continued in a useless attempt to hide her self-consciousness. "My name is Mirabelle. Um, I'm new here. I just arrived yesterday and don't really know my way around anywhere yet... but I'm definitely looking forward to learning new things with you!"
Blushing furiously, she fell back into her seat, trying to control her breathing and the heat radiating from her head. Hopefully her introduction had been good enough. What had she said? She hardly remembered.
I write too much -.-

The teacher noticed everyone had gone except for one student. He addressed them positively with a smile. "A little shy, eh? Come on! We all want to learn about you!"

After no response from the quiet students, Gazzy rubbed his hands together and walked back to his desk. "Well... Okay then! Now, thank you all for being patient with me.
"I hope that you were all listening to each other's introductions. I would like for each of you to pick whose introduction is the best and why. You can pick your own, if you feel so ever inclined to do so, but I think that it's frowned upon."
The teacher took out his notebook and began taking notes on how the students picked the 'best' in their own opinions.

Looking around the room once more, Bryan noticed again that he had to opportunity to go first. Although he didn't want to he again felt that he would rather go first and get it over with now then to worry about it later. Seizing the opportunity, Bryan immediately stood up and made his way to the front of the class.
"Hello again everyone. I didn't really expect to come back up here right away. Still feeling a little nervous from his first introduction he took a deep breath.I would have to say that Archibald's introduction was the best. I say this because looking at everyone's background, Archie's history is some kind of awesome. Bryan then turns to Archie. Yes, i am a fan of your story. Forgive me if it seems a little rude but i wish I had come from a background like that.
After he realized what he was doing and how much he humiliated himself in front of the class. Bryan then looked around the room and saw everyone just staring at him. That's all I have for now. Thank you. and proceeded back to his seat.
Bryan’s answer didn’t come as a surprise. (Bernadine was filled with starry-eyed youth who placed the Royal Military on a marble pedestal and hoped to join their ranks, one day.) Though the young man wished for a similar background, he’d never know that the majordomo’s upbringing was no different from his own despite the difference in circumstances. With that kind of perseverance, wishes could easily become reality.
After acknowledging Bryan’s praise with a slight nod, Archie carefully stacked his peers’ introductions against each other:
For someone who claimed to be nervous, Bryan seemed pretty comfortable to go into much detail about himself and list all of his achievements. Shocking--even unhealthy, some might say--for someone so young to willingly endure such physical strain to his own body; however, several of Perizha’s aboriginal cultures prized athleticism of that caliber. But years of experience taught the former soldier that words were weightless without substantial proof. Then again, nerves had a troublesome way of loosening the tongue and Bryan, perhaps, couldn’t help himself.
Mirabelle’s introduction, on the other hand, met all characteristics of a basic introduction despite the lack of personal information. That didn’t mean Archie gleaned nothing from it. On the contrary, her demeanor revealed plenty; she was the very definition of nerves. If she blushed any harder, she’d turn purple, the majordomo observed. He could almost hear the ticks and creaks as her brain desperately attempted to straighten her thoughts, whatever they may be. It appeared to be quite painful.
Archie leaned further into his seat, rubbing his chin in thought as he assessed his fellow students further. Their spoken introductions and behaviors placed Bryan and Mirabelle on opposite ends of the spectrum--with one being an open book, but whose demeanor left much to be desired, while the other seemed likely to go into a blushing fit if asked to elaborate on her history. Such stark contrasts in character.
Minutes ticked by and the blanket of silence only seemed to thicken. The majordomo sighed, inwardly. He supposed he’d given the matter quite enough thought to come to a conclusion.
Archie rose out of his seat, shoulders squared, aged hands clasped behind his back (a mannerism drilled into him by the military). He inclined his head at Mr. Gazzy, then fixed his attention on Bryan.
“Mr. Myles' insightful introduction reveals a driven young man, with a love for physical fitness and the desire for improvement; he also seems to have a healthy respect for his father, whom he mentioned--several times, in fact. It’s quite admirable. However, I’ve been taught never to reveal my cards too early in the game.” He shifted his gaze from Bryan to Mirabelle. A hint of a smile played on the corner of his lips. “If Ms. Mirabelle plays her hand right, she just might surprise us.”
With that said, Archie took his seat and waited Mirabelle to deliver her results of Mr. Gazzy's second assignment.

s**t. That was the first reaction Mirabelle had to the second assignment from the teacher, after which she had to chastise herself for using bad language. Apparently, they'd started class and learning already, and she should have been taking notes. From now, she'd have to take notes of everything. Even things like introductions, because clearly, everything was important.
That gave her a moment's pause. Everything was important. The momentary silence from her desk was suddenly replaced by a furious rearranging of papers and books. One of the first things she'd forgotten had been to read through all the text required completely. Like the note on the door. How could she have forgotten? Well, that was an easy answer. She'd been far too distracted and nervous to pay attention. Which meant that she had to calm down, which in turn was going to be a huge challenge. Mirabelle focused on breathing deeply while Bryan spoke. It was, in the end, probably better to lose a word or two of what he said in favor of not tripping over herself later on.
Next, Archibald spoke up. That wasn't surprising, although it gave Mirabelle an odd feeling of Deja Vu- everyone had spoken up in this order the first time too, hadn't they? Ironic somehow. Or perhaps just natural. Bryan spoke up.... maybe because he was impatient and wanted things to happen. Archibald seemed somehow bored or repulsed by the entire affair, which made little enough sense, but maybe he was used to more excitement from the military. And then it was her turn again. Mirabelle took a deep breath.
"It depends a little bit on what you're looking for. I think Bryan gave a very good introduction if we wanted to know about his accomplishments and training habits, but maybe not as much if we wanted to know how he thinks. And he kept pointing out how he was very shy, but-..." she trailed off and blushed a little, knowing that by now, everyone had to be looking at her. "But he didn't seem very shy when he spoke." One down. Not many more to go. She fiddled with her pen, looking down as she turned to the next person who'd done an introduction.
"Archibald's introduction was more rounded out, or perhaps just more focused. He seemed more collected than Bryan, even though he told us fewer details. I think I'll be going with his introduction as the best, because it was confident and measured. People like that."
Part said, she fell silent until the weight on her mind grew too strong- because she was thorough, and she felt this was important. Blood rising to her cheeks again, she addressed the teacher. "I didn't pick mine or your introduction because they were awfully short and failed to really tell anything important about us at all."
Why, oh why, do the Gaia Guilds not have a tipping option?!
