Trey's look of suspicion didn't really die down -- like at all -- at JR's 'reassuring' honesty, but he did hand over the communicator. He was pretty sure he would have noticed if he'd gotten a message, though he dd have to admit, he'd sort of forgotten that JR had borrowed it to message someone, and thus, forgot to check what the message was. And watching him easily open up everything, go through the systems, and check his messages, Trey seriously wondered if he should perhaps try and get an actual security system for that thing. Then again... was there much of a point? He didn't know if JR was a hacker or not, but he was pretty much a professional thief, so he probably had some way to get past that sort of thing. Then again.... Trey suddenly realized, he wasn't actually sure what all JR was capable of...

With the two trainers now on the same page again they could resume their original pace, Kraven taking the lead when Phoenix gestured them out the door. "Well, as nice as it would be to just move right along and knock out our third gym together, training up is probably safest." Her pokemon might've gotten a bit stronger since the raven-haired musciaian's last badge, thanks in no small part to her little temporal excursion, but it was better safe than sorry. She'd thought Leona would've been an easy victory too, and that hardly went as planned.
With that in mind, the pair returned to Pinwheel for their second time together, passing a handful of similar folks who were just as eager to prepare for Burgh. Looking up through the gaps in the trees, Kraven could still see the sunlight peeking in from above. "Alright, why don't we try knocking some heads while we still have light?" The young woman began, turning to her companion. "Once it starts to get dark we'll head back to Castelia, hopefully get a room with more than one bed this time, and if we need to train any more in the morning we can knock some heads in the city. ☆ ☆【Relief and pride swelled in Phoenix’s chest as she and Kraven took their leave of the Nacrene Gym, and soon after the city altogether. It felt good to finally make some considerable progress after everything that had happened, while she’d had a good bit of fun at the Tanabata it was about time she focused back on training up again for the gym challenge. Speaking of which… she couldn’t help but wonder if Kraven wanted to do any training at all during their passage through Pinwheel Forest (for the third time) or if she just wanted to charge full steam ahead for Castelia right away. The redhead nodded in agreement with her companion’s statement that it was probably best to get in some while they were here, especially considering how much she’d apparently struggled against Lenora. ”Agreed, might as well while we’re out here,” she chipped in, glancing towards Hanaka and Fianna out the corner of her eye. Their battle against the Nacrene Gym Leader had been a bit of a close call, and given that the pair were among some of her strongest Pokemon so far she’d rather not take that kind of chance against Burgh. That and she wanted to use the opportunity to train up some of her other Pokemon, would definitely be best to have a more balanced team in terms of strength rather than just relying on her strongest to brute force their way through every gym.
Passing through the tree line into the thick of the forest, Phoenix glanced over briefly as they walked past some other trainers who seemed to be preparing to toughen up for Burgh as well. Looked like there’d at least be no other shortage of other trainers who might want to challenge them, though she’d… admittedly hadn’t exactly tried battling another trainer yet aside from the Gym Leaders. Better late than never, though, and it wouldn’t be a horrible idea at all since it’d mean getting in some more training in the meantime. She looked back over towards her friend as Kraven started laying out a plan of attack, suggesting they could ‘knock some heads’ while it was still bright out and head back to Castelia when it started getting towards nighttime. The redhead made a vague noise that sounded like a barely held back laugh at her companion’s comment about them hopefully being able to find a room that had more… comfortable accommodations this time around. ”To be fair it had been rather late when we’d finally gotten back from Tanabata. But yeah, let’s hope the options aren’t so scarce again. Second time’s the charm, I suppose,” she agreed, feeling her cheeks burn a bit as the memories of last night came back to her. She wouldn’t say that she had hated it, per se. It had just felt… really weird sharing a bed with someone she’d only just met not that long ago. Of course even then Kraven had insisted that they were friends which helped make it a bit less awkward, but yeah… For both their sakes she’d rather not have to repeat that experience again, or at least not so soon…
”Sounds good to me,” Phoenix said with a small smile once their plan had been completely laid out, courtesy of Kraven, ”Should probably make some preparations first though…” As she said that, she reached for her bag to see if she had anything useful that could be helpful for training. She’d been amassing quite a bit of stuff between the Tanabata excursion and the ‘care packages’ that Mrs. Chu sent every so often, maybe she should start actually using more of it. She noticed immediately that she seemed to have a bit of a surplus of those blue eggs, Lucky Eggs they were called that were used to enhance how much strength and experience a Pokemon could gain from battle. Maybe she should save those to use for her weaker Pokemon… Alongside the eggs was an EXP Share, now THAT she could use for sure. Retrieving it, she reached for her belt and grabbed Astrid’s Pokeball to let her out. The Pokemon here in Pinwheel Forest were likely too strong for her, but she’d have to get in training somehow… ”Come on out, Astrid,” she commanded, letting the little Riolu out. Astrid emerged with a yawn as if she’d just woken up from a nap, wiping at her eyes with a paw while the other clutched at the crown-shaped rock held close to her chest like a child’s teddy bear.
”Oh, were you napping? Sorry to disturb you, but I wanted to give you something,” Phoenix apologized sheepishly, bending down to be a bit more level with the tiny aura Pokemon as Astrid shot her a curious if somewhat annoyed look. ”Here, you can take this in exchange for that King’s Rock,” she offered, holding out the odd looking helmet decorated with what seemed to be tiny lights. The Riolu looked to the crown rock she held briefly, then back at Phoenix, shaking her head and holding it even closer to herself as she bared her teeth defensively.”No, mine!”she growled, not wanting to just give it away. The redhead quickly held her hands up in a placating gesture, offering a small, reassuring smile. ”Oh no, I promise I’m not going to take it away! I just… want to exchange it for a bit,” she reasoned hastily, the Riolu still not looking entirely convinced but was slowly easing up, ”I promise I’ll give it back, you just… really need this for now so you can get stronger, okay?” Astrid narrowed her eyes, looking once more at the strange thing in her trainer’s hand. She was still not keen on giving up her little treasure, but… Phoenix did promise to give it back afterwards. And the idea of growing stronger so she could eventually evolve was admittedly a tempting offer. The Riolu looked from the odd helmet to the rock in her paws, keeping her eyes downcast as she gave in and handed it over.”Okay…”she relented, glancing up as the King’s Rock was lifted away and the helmet was being carefully fitted onto her head.
Astrid watched the rock carefully as it was tucked away into Phoenix’s bag, then turned her attention to poke and prod curiously at the thing that now sat on her head. ”It’s not uncomfortable, is it?” the redhead asked, hoping she hadn’t put it on too tightly. The Riolu shook her head, it was really just the odd feeling of having its weight resting atop her that was weird, though she supposed it wasn’t too bad… Smiling with relief, Phoenix turned towards Fianna and Hanaka, figuring that she could start off getting them up to speed before focusing on the others. ”Right, well if you both are ready... Let’s, uh, ‘knock some heads’ then, shall we?” she asked, chuckling as the Dewott gave a meek smile and a nod of agreement, while the Braixen showed off her eagerness with a fist pump.”But of course~”she declared with a wide grin, already setting off ahead with a purposeful stride,”Let’s see what this forest has to offer, shall we?”She got hardly further than maybe four feet from the pair of trainers when her ears twitched, catching the telltale rustling of leaves being disturbed… There! She looked up in time to see the shape of a Pokemon, which upon closer inspection happened to be a Swadloon, rocketing down at her from the tree above. However, upon seeing the sly grin and deviant glint in the fox’s eyes as she turned and raised her flaming branch before her, it came to realize its mistake far too late…】☆ ☆

With Phee seemingly on board with the plan, Kraven was eager to jump right into training. She wouldn't want to admit it, but truthfully their little excursion and having to watch the redhead tackle those first two gyms had the musician rather wound up. While Phoenix stopped to take stock and prepare her team, the raven-haired fighter jumped right into it, picking out the nearest wild pokemon and throwing her Volcarona at it. At this level, there wasn't too much strategy to put into each fight, so despite the woman's earnest commands, Mothra was likely more than capable of handling the wild dove on her own.
The two settled into a rhythm, as the titanic moth flutters towards her opponents before returning to her trainer between fights, her wounds healed quickly by a supply of potions. It proved a little tedious, but it would be the best method while they prepared for the next gym. After the first two fights tempered her excitement, Kraven then settled in next to her companion once more, chuckling a little when the redhead repeated her chosen phrasing. "Who knows, if we're fast enough we might even ready to take down Burgh tonight."

☆ ☆【Phoenix was admittedly feeling quite pumped up as she quickly made preparations for her Pokemon before they got into the heat of training. Maybe it was that anxiety-inducing yet thrilling close call they’d had against Lenora, maybe it was the confidence and pride that welled up in her from winning not one but TWO badges today, or perhaps a bit of both combined… In spite of her eagerness, however, she knew that Burgh wouldn’t be a pushover, and there were Pokemon on her team that were in desperate need of training before they could even think of taking him on. Of course, while Phoenix fiddled around and got Astrid fitted out with her new EXP Share for the time being, Kraven was already in the thick of it as she proceeded to throw her Volcarona at the nearest wild Pokemon that stuck its head out of the brush. The redhead watched in awe as it hardly took long for the two to settle themselves in a pattern, the Volcarona going out and taking down whatever foes dared to challenge her and flying back to Kraven for healing whenever it was needed. And with everyone more or less ready, Fianna was already setting out to seek out her own challenges alongside their companion’s Pokemon as she easily took down a trio consisting of a pair of Swadloon and a Sewaddle. Of course their being both Bug and Grass type came to seriously bite them as they hardly stood even a chance against the Fire-type.
The sudden appearance of the Tympole afterwards made Fianna falter for just a moment, remembering how their species tended to be notably resistant to Electric-type moves. However, it came to her that the first evolution had no such resistance just seconds before it was closing in, and she easily regained her flow as she easily batted it aside with an electrified fist. Seeming to sense the presence of battle, more and more Pokemon came rushing out at her from the brush. The Audino that appeared next proved to be a touch sturdier than her other opponents, managing to tank her initial Fire Blast without suffering any kind of burns and proceeding to blast her with a wave of horribly loud noise that made her ears ring. Shaking off the dizziness and ignoring the insistent buzz in her ears, Fianna wasted no time darting forward and finishing it off with a Thunder Punch to the stomach. Huffing with exertion, she made a quick retreat back to Phoenix to heal up before throwing herself back into it with gusto.
While their Pokemon fought alongside each other against the waves of foes that seemed to have been stirred up in the wake of their battles, Phoenix quickly rummaged around in her bag for anything else that could help out with improving their training. Her eyes lit on a strange looking Pokeball that she didn’t recall being in there before… in fact, it seemed like there were quite a few things in her bag that had suddenly materialized out of nowhere, including a stick of what looked like… incense? Curious… she might have to take a closer look at that. For now, though, she pulled out the odd Pokeball, which upon inspection was actually a GS Ball, an often sought after kind of ball that caused Pokemon to grow even stronger from battle. ”Here, Hana. I think this could help you out,” she said, offering it out to the Dewott. Hanaka tilted her head, inspecting the strange new Pokeball closely. Was it a special kind of Pokeball? Was that why it looked so radically different from a normal one? Well, if Phoenix said it could help her, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, right? The Dewott nodded, allowing her trainer to gently tap her on the head with the GS Ball, effectively transferring her over from her old ball. ”There you go… Hm?” Phoenix smiled as she replaced Hanaka’s Pokeball with her new ball on her belt, feeling a sudden tug at her pant leg. Astrid looked up at her trainer, holding her paws up towards the redhead in a wordless demand to be picked up and carried.
”Oh alright. I suppose you want to catch up on your nap now, right?” she asked, chuckling softly as she obliged, gently scooping the little Riolu into her arms. Astrid wasted no time making herself comfortable, adjusting herself a bit to compensate for the new thingamajig on her head so she could lay down without it bothering her. As she shifted herself around, Phoenix only barely managed to catch the sly glint in the Riolu’s eyes as a tiny paw suddenly shot out and swiped one of the little heart-shaped chocolates nestled into the side pocket of her bag. ”Wha- H-hey!” the redhead exclaimed, but the Riolu had already dug her little teeth into it before she could be stopped. ”Hmf… You know you could’ve at least asked first…” Phoenix chided with a mildly annoyed look on her face, shaking her head as Astrid simply flashed her an innocent grin while she munched away on her purloined treat.
Glancing up as Kraven settled in next to her, she hummed thoughtfully at her friend’s suggestion that they might be able to beat Burgh tonight if they trained up quickly enough. ”That could very well be,” she agreed with a small smile, ”We’ll just have to see, won’t we? The sun hasn’t started to really set yet so we might actually have plenty of time…” The smile was quickly replaced by a look of contemplation as she gazed at her companion for a moment or two before opening her mouth again. ”You know, I’ve been… kind of meaning to ask this for a while, but,” she paused briefly to carefully shift Astrid over into one arm so she could have a hand free, ”Just out of curiosity... Why exactly did you choose to come here to Unova to start your journey, Kraven?” It had been nagging at her ever since they had stopped in at the diner back in Nacrene, and she had to wonder why out of all the places she could’ve possibly chosen in this vast and open world, the dark-haired girl had come here in particular.
Not that she was judging based on her own bias, of course, but Phoenix had been looking for an excuse and a means to get out of Unova for a long, long while now. Having grown up and lived most of her life here, the redhead had decided it was time she actually start getting herself more out there. To go and see more of the world through her own eyes, rather than just hearing snippets about the various wonders of distant lands from television programs and the mouths of visiting tourists. That was the main reason why she liked listening to her friend talk so much about Kalos, to hear how different and interesting their cities and culture were compared to here. Granted, she was still eagerly hoping that Kraven might actually take her out to Kalos and show her around sometime, even if that probably won’t be happening anytime soon. But hey, a girl could dream, right?】☆ ☆

With another spritz from a bottle, Mothra moved back into the fray at full strength. Heavy wings beat warm winds in her wake, heating the air slightly and exposing Bug-types that had hidden themselves under brush. Azure eyes shifted around when Phee's pokemon quickly moved to join her, dispatching their own contenders with a similar amount of effort. The Volcarona briefly fluttered in place to watch them after defeating a Sewaddle of her own, before quietly drifting nearer to Fianna to take out another Audino that made themselves known. Wordlessly the burning moth began to fight on the periphery, somewhat pointedly positioning herself in front of what she saw as the "smaller" pokemon.
Meanwhile, Kraven and Phoenix continued their banter, before the redhead quietly shifted discussion. The musician's ears perked up slightly before she gave her friend a strange look, scratching her cheek a little at the question. "Is being eager to see the world not a good reason?" Chuckling a bit, the dark-haired trainer crossed her arms and paused briefly, taking a moment to articulate her feelings. "Well... there is more to it than that, obviously. To be honest, I kinda just wanted to get out of Lumiose.
"The city is a fine place, and Kalos as a whole is hardly bad, it's just... A little suffocating at times, you know?" It occurred only now to the young woman that she really didn't have a fine grasp on her companion's background. Her recollection of things was still a little hazy after the debacle of the Distortion World, but she never did get a good idea what Phoenix's hometown was like. As far as she knew the Daycare was just a quiet place nestled between towns. Before she could get too lost wondering if Phee did know what she meant, Kraven elected to continue elaborating. "Lumiose kinda gets lost in its own public image. Half the people are always obsessed with style and reputation, doing everything in a fancy way or trying to be as extravagant as possible. Growing up it's not hard for the kids to get all caught up in all the pomp and circumstance either, and if you put yourself out there as any sort of public figure... Well, keeping up appearances just gets tiring. For everyone involved." The young woman shifted slightly on her heel, watching as Mothra sends another Audino careening through the bushes on a surge of heavy winds. "Unova's just a lot more... laid back, I suppose? At least from my impressions. I know you can't see a place like Castelia and call it rural, but you don't have to worry about saving face or keeping up any sort of reputation around there either."

☆ ☆【Fianna fell into a steady rhythm as she took out wild Pokemon after wild Pokemon, a searing Fire Blast here, a quick uppercut with a Thunder Punch there… She hardly even needed to go back to Phoenix to heal up after that run in with the Audino, given that the majority of their attackers were Bug or Water-types that she could easily dispatch in a single blow. Still, there seemed to be no end in sight as Kraven’s Volcarona blasted the brush with a wave of hot air that exposed more Bug-types hiding underneath. True to form yet another Sewaddle jumped out at the fire fox as soon as it realized it had been spotted, only to be blasted back like all the others before it with a great burst of flame. The movement of the giant fire moth out of the corner of her eye didn’t go unnoticed as Mothra felled yet another Audino, Fianna flashing the Volcarona a toothy grin and a thumbs up. However, it was probably about time that she let someone else have the training spotlight. Glancing towards her Dewott teammate, the Braixen smiled and beckoned her to come.”Think that’s enough for me! Go ahead and tag in, sweetheart~”she called out, stepping away to disengage from the center of the action just as another Tympole leapt out of the brush towards her.
Hanaka blinked in surprise at the fox’s request, but nodded timidly, dashing forward to take Fianna’s place on the battlefield.”O-Okay! J-Just leave it t-to me, F-Fi!”she called out, the pair exchanging a small high-five as they ran past each other. Fianna quickly dashed back towards Phoenix, grabbing a handful of potions from her bag to have on hand in case Hanaka needed to be healed up in between battles. Picking up speed as she charged towards the fray running on all fours Hanaka made a flying leap towards the Tympole that had just appeared, whipping out her scalchops midair and directing her weight as she brought them down upon the bouncing tadpole in a sharp slashing motion. The Tympole gave a cry of annoyance and pain, unleashing a cacophonous song of wails and chirps in retaliation before it was finally swatted away with another Sacred Sword. Taking a deep breath and placing her focus on the combat going on, Hanaka cast a quick glance towards Mothra who was now fighting against her own opponents out of her periphery and seemed to be positioning herself a little in front of the Dewott. Was Mothra… trying to protect her? Hanaka wasn’t sure, she honestly hadn’t had the opportunity to really gauge what most of the other Pokemon on Kraven’s team aside from Gungnir and Glitch were like yet. Still, if that was the case… The little otter dipped her head and gave a meek smile to the Volcarona in appreciation before shifting her attention towards another Audino that came staggering out of the brush towards her.
While their Pokemon were focused on training and duking it out with the local wildlife, Phoenix turned her attention towards her friend as a question that had been lingering in the back of her mind was put out into the open. She had been wondering what it was about Unova that had drawn Kraven here to start her Pokemon journey, especially when there were other options that she could’ve chosen out there. Not that she would judge, even though she had been trying to find a means of getting out of Unova herself for a while. Kraven seemed a bit surprised and confused by the question, if the odd look on her face was any indication. At the question of wanting to see the world not being a good enough reason, Phoenix couldn’t help but laugh aloud a little at that. ”Well it’s certainly as good a reason to want to travel as any, as far as I’m concerned,” she assured lightly, ”That would certainly be my reason for wanting to go out to a new place myself, to be frank.”
However, it seemed Kraven’s reason for coming here didn’t stop at just that as the dark-haired trainer folded her arms and took a moment to think. Phoenix smiled and nodded, patiently letting her friend gather her thought before continuing on with her explanation as she admitted that there was more to her reason for wanting to come here. The redhead hummed and pursed her lips at the statement that Kraven had just wanted to get out of Lumiose, listening intently as she said that while it and Kalos overall wasn’t a bad place to live it had felt a bit oppressive at times to her. At that, the redhead blinked a bit in surprise, it seemed she and her new friend had a bit more in common than she’d initially thought. She paused a moment as she thought about interjecting, but it seemed Kraven had more to say as she began to go more into specifics about the issues of living in such a glitzy, glamorous place like Lumiose City. How it tended to lose itself in its own public image and reputation, and how stuff like that was what so many of its residents were obsessed with as they tried to do everything in style and extravagance. And of course when everyone else in the city was out and about living that kind of lifestyle, it was quite difficult for kids who were born and raised there to not get caught up in it as well. But as the years wore on, eventually trying to keep up appearances just grew tiring and frustrating.
Phoenix nodded as Kraven reasoned that Unova’s energy seemed more laid back in comparison to the constant bustle and flashiness of Lumiose, at least that was how it felt from her impressions of it so far. Of course a city as large and metropolitan as Castelia could hardly be called ‘rural’ by any stretch of the means, but at least in these parts one didn’t have to worry about saving face or trying to maintain their reputation. The redhead held a hand to her lips as she mulled over her companion’s words, nodding as she took a moment to gather her own thoughts before speaking. ”I see… Well, I can’t say I’d really know what the kind of lifestyle that a lot of people in Lumiose try to live is like, but I can understand how it can be overbearing at times,” she said, carefully shifting Astrid in her arm so that it didn’t fall asleep, ”Then again when you’ve lived in one place for most of your life and the days just start really blending together after years and years, I guess it’s natural to want a change of scenery sometimes. A place where you can let go of all those inhibitions that are weighing you down and really feel at ease with the world around you, to feel a lot more… free…” She looked to her companion once more, a small wry smile crossing her face.
”Unova may seem like a haven in comparison, but as someone who’s lived here all my life I’ve honestly been yearning to leave this place myself for quite a while now. Even if it’s just for a short trip, I’ve always been fascinated by what lies out there beyond the vast sea and skies,” she admitted, chuckling softly, ”Like you said before, I suppose you could say that I’m quite eager to want to see the world as well. I just, never really had a proper excuse or even a means to… I suppose.” That and she did still have ties here in Unova, wanting to leave it all behind for new experiences and greener pastures just felt selfish. It wouldn’t be a good way to repay Mr. and Mrs. Chu for the kindness and hospitality they’d shown her for so many years after they took her and Clark in from the streets. And Clark, poor, dear Clark… he’d already lost so much so early into his own life. The two of them had been thick as thieves since their initial meeting and battle at the orphanage, she was perhaps the closest thing to a younger sister that he’d ever had. She had to wonder if Kraven had any family that still lived in Lumiose, and how they must’ve felt she had chosen to leave Kalos entirely for a different region. Perhaps they’d been very supportive of the idea rather than demanding that she stay, but Phoenix didn’t want to jump to conclusions without hearing it from Kraven first. There was still quite a bit about her new friend that she was still learning about, after all.】☆ ☆

Mothra wouldn't return Fianna's gesture, only briefly glancing back to her before she returned to her constant assault. Her wings beat one Heat Wave after another, scorching the smaller bug-types before a stray Tympole forced the Volcarona to change her strategy. When Hanaka entered the fray, she let the force behind her wing beats carry her back a little more, sending the tadpole flying and positioning the fire-type to better watch over the growing otter. It hardly seemed as if either of Phee's pokemon truly needed any sort of protection, but she remained ever present.
Kraven felt an odd mote of relief when the redhead understood with her sentiment, and even agreed with her reason for coming out here. It brought a small smile to her face, and made elaborating further on her feelings a little easier. Properly explaining the nature of life in Lumiose gave her a little bit of difficulty, but she was happy that Phee seemed to get what she was saying. "Yeah, I suppose it's not too far from that. Though I think to some degree people'll feel that way regardless of where they grow up." The young woman scooted a little closer to her friend, reaching over slightly to give Astrid a little scritch behind the ears. "A lot of that sort of thing comes down to all the memories and experiences you've had tied to the place around you... And if those memories aren't fond ones, they're hardly gonna make you feel all warm where you live." She returned Phoenix's expression with a sympathetic one.
Fortunately, past experience and a nagging desire to leave everything behind wasn't where that conversation ended. "Then I'll have to take you to see what's out there sometime. Regardless about how I feel about the place, I honestly didn't put much more thought into leaving than that desire to travel. I know a few places you'll probably like." Kraven's smile widened considerably, before moving her arm to the redhead's shoulder to bring her in for a small hug. "Though, if I knew I'd be meeting you, I might've come to Unova earlier!" The raven-haired musician laughed with a light heart, whatever troubles that nagged at her about home washed away.

☆ ☆【As Hanaka handled her own side of the fight, she occasionally cast glances over towards her apparent battling partner to check in how Mothra was holding up. By far, the Volcarona was apparently on a nigh unstoppable rampage as the hot air issuing forth from her beating wings scorched and defeated any Bug-types unlucky enough to be caught in its range. However, the Tympole that unexpectedly showed up caused the giant moth to change her strategy up a little as she battered it about with hurricane force winds, enough to severely weaken but not knock out the little tadpole outright. However, the Dewott hardly had any time to dwell on it before more opponents started showing up on her end. Her eyes lit up upon seeing her next foe was a Pansear, the first Fire-type they’ve come across among the majority of Bug, Grass, and Water-types that populated this forest. Knowing full well she could easily handle this, she dove towards it with scalchops in hand, swinging them in a wide, downward arc and directing them upwards at her opponent. Her technique, of course, still needed a lot more work as her swings were wild and sloppy, but it was clear she was slowly becoming confident in her capabilities as her Razor Shell struck home right on the monkey’s chin and sent it flying back and away.
As more wild Pokemon subsequently followed up, Hanaka found herself having to constantly shift her strategy to better handle the variety of opponents coming at her. The Swadloon was handled simply enough as she blasted it away with a tumult of freezing winds and driving snow that left a small coating of frost on the surrounding greenery, but the Sawk and Tympole were each able to land a good hit on her before they too were taken out. She wished she had the kind of versatile moveset to be able to handle these kinds opponents as easily as Fianna could, but she’d just have to make do with what she did have. All the while, the Braixen waited on the sidelines, prepared to dart in when Hanaka had a minute to take a quick breather and quickly heal her up before the next bout of combat. Between her teammate helping to keep her healthy and the big Volcarona hovering close to her like a protective mother, the Dewott felt that much more at ease in the presence of such supportive figures. Drawing herself up to stand as tall as she could while brandishing her scalchops while she stood close to Mothra, Hanaka’s eyes carefully scanned the area in search of more potential foes preparing to jump out at them.
Phoenix’s small smile widened just a touch more as Kraven seemed relieved to hear that she understood what she was getting at with her explanation of why she’d left Lumiose and Kalos for Unova. While the redhead couldn’t exactly relate with living the kind of lifestyle of building one’s self up as their own miniature celebrity of sorts in the glamorous city, the sentiment of wanting to escape the oppression of living in a place like that she knew all too well. Of course, when you’ve lived in one place for most of your life, it was only natural to want to stretch one’s metaphorical wings and travel elsewhere. That was the kind of freedom that Phoenix herself had been yearning to have for years and years… She nodded as Kraven agreed with her, saying that in a way people would feel the need to escape to somewhere else no matter where they grew up. ”Indeed, I suppose it’s natural to feel that kind of need for escapism. Whether it means traveling to a different city or town in the same region or to a different region entirely,” she spoke, her deep blue eyes thoughtful as she lowered her gaze slightly, ”In a way, how people achieve it differs from person to person as well.”
As Kraven moved a bit closer, Phoenix hesitated ever so slightly as her eyes darted up towards her friend once more, suddenly very hyperaware of their proximity to each other. It was only for a moment, though… Perhaps she was growing more and more used to her new friend’s tendency to step into her personal bubble. Kraven was certainly a bit more of the touchy-feely type when it came to friendship, at least from what the redhead had observed so far from their interactions. Still, Phoenix wouldn’t say she disliked it, she just needed time to be able to more properly adjust this new kind of friendship. But in a way, having the other standing so close to her felt… comforting in some kind of way, and that wasn’t such a bad thing, right? She smiled as the dark-haired girl reached over to pet the Riolu she held in her arms. Astrid stared somewhat warily, her gaze alternating between Kraven and her outstretched hand reaching for her. Normally the little Fighting-type likely would’ve tried to bite at the intruding appendage or squirm away from the contact, but this girl was far from a stranger to them and it seemed she and Phoenix were on friendly terms. Astrid lay still as she allowed the touch, her furtive expression relaxing into contented half-lidded eyes as she leaned against Kraven’s hand with a soft, pleased growl.
The redhead listened as her friend went on, saying that a lot of that kind of desire to want to travel elsewhere usually came down to the kinds of memories and experiences someone had with the place around one. And of course, if the memories tended to be less than fond, they’d hardly give one much of a reason to want to stay. ”Indeed…” Phoenix agreed with a nod, her sardonic smile softening under Kraven’s sympathetic look, ”I wouldn’t say that my memories of my life so far here in Unova were all bad, necessarily… But there are certainly some spots that shine a lot brighter than others.” She wondered if perhaps Kraven had a lot of bad memories tied with Lumiose, perhaps some deeper, underlying reason for why she’d chosen to leave aside from just wanting to escape from the suffocating atmosphere of the city. Tempting as it was to ask, Phoenix held her tongue in favor of not asking anything that might be too personal. If Kraven wanted to talk to her about those sorts of things, she could certainly do so in her own time if or when she felt more comfortable with sharing that kind of information. Granted it seemed the other tended to talk a bit more openly about her feelings and who she was as a person, but asking about such deeply personal things felt like an invasion of privacy in Phoenix’s eyes.
The redhead’s expression brightened significantly at Kraven’s suggestion that she’d have to take her to see Kalos to see what all was out there, and that regardless of how she felt about Lumiose she hadn’t put a lot of thought into leaving the city aside from wanting to travel. ”Ah, r-really? I mean, I’d love to if you really wouldn’t mind, but…” she asked, fiddling with her fingers as she averted her gaze, ”If we do go to Kalos, it doesn’t necessarily have to be to Lumiose, per se… I think… I’d actually want to see more of what the countryside is like, I’m sure there’s a lot of beautiful scenery out there. If anything we could maybe save the big city as a kind of final stop, a nice sendoff before we leave for more adventures, you know?” Still, seeing Kraven much happier now made Phoenix’s chest feel warm and fuzzy inside, the dark-haired girl’s cheeriness and enthusiasm was certainly infectious as the redhead found herself grinning widely as well.
Upon feeling herself suddenly being pulled into a hug, a soft ‘Eep!’ of surprise burst out unbidden from Phoenix’s lips as her face immediately lit up like fireworks at the friendly if rather affectionate gesture. In spite of herself, however, she found herself laughing along with Kraven as the other commented that she probably would’ve come to Unova earlier if she’d known she’d be meeting her. ”J-Jeez, don’t just say that kind of silly stuff!” she retorted, though the petulant, pouty tone of her tone hardly matched the flustered, grinning expression on her face. But with hardly an ounce of hesitation, Phoenix found herself returning the gesture as she carefully wrapped her free arm around her friend’s shoulder to match the kind of half-hug, taking care not to disturb the relaxing Riolu too much. ”But yeah, I’m really glad to have met you when I had, Kraven,” she said softly, inclining her head a bit so that it gently rested against the other’s shoulder, ”I’m really glad that we’re... friends.” A warm, fluttery kind of sensation washed over her, it admittedly felt nice to say that she had actually made a new friend, a new human friend at that!
Kraven’s brand of friendship was certainly different from what Phoenix was used to when she’d been growing up alongside Clark, but it was a nice, refreshing change of pace sort of different. Having spent much of her life as a recluse and underexposed to social situations, unable to speak up as needed or even meet other people’s eyes as she shook their hands or addressed them for one reason or another… perhaps Kraven was just the kind of friend that she needed to help herself grow out of that shell at last. Granted, they were still learning more about one another, learning where each other’s boundaries lay and such. But there would be plenty more time to figure that kind of stuff out, they did have all the time in the world for it, after all. Taking a deep breath, Phoenix gently released the hug and straightened herself once more, regaining her composure as she let the flush slowly fade from her cheeks. ”Although, I suppose we don’t necessarily have to go to just Kalos if we do decide to travel outside of Unova for a bit sometime,” she suggested, tilting her head slightly as she gazed curiously at Kraven, ”Surely there might be other regions out there that maybe you’d want to explore as well? There is a certain sort of thrill when it comes to traveling to new, ‘uncharted territory’, after all.” She had to wonder how much the other knew about other regions in general, especially since it felt like the world was gradually growing bigger and bigger every time. Perhaps she might know a bit about Sinnoh, Johto, Kanto, Alola, or perhaps any newer regions that might have been garnering more attention in recent times. It was a vast world out there, and Phoenix wanted to be able to see as much of it as she could while she still had time left on this world. And having previously expressed her desire to want to travel, Kraven likely felt similarly as well, right?】☆ ☆

Though the training quickly racked up experience for the Volcarona, her defenses still weren't perfect from the odd pokemon not weak to her attacks. As Hanaka surged forth to dispatch a wave of fairly weak pokemon, Mothra took out the last of her own, taking the opportunity to leave any stragglers to the Dewott and retreat to her trainer. The number of pit stops she'd had to take had drastically decreased as time went on, and Kraven took the opportunity to nudge her fire-type along with a helping of rare candies. Freshly healed and spurred on with yet more growth, she returned to her position with the other pokemon, ready to tackle her next opponent.
Having successfully pivoted their discussion onto a much lighter note, Kraven was more than happy to indulge that wanderlust she saw in Phoenix. Watching the redhead light up kept her nodding along to the suggestion of skirting around Lumiose to begin with, leaving the major city as their last stop on such a trip. "I wouldn't mind that at all. Even if we ended up hitting the gyms while we're there, we'd end up having to go around it anyway." The sour taste of introspection and any bad memories that came with was washed out by the thought of taking her new companion on tour, the musician's head already making a mental checklist of the places she wanted to go. The contagious positivity that spread to the redhead only further fueled Kraven, letting her forget the last vestiges of soreness that made her body ache.
She didn't even think anything of it when she drew the redhead close, chuckling at the little noise she made when being pulled in. She was only further amused by the flush of color that spread over the girl's face, waving her free hand upon getting chastized for her comment. "Of course, of course. Jeeze, you'd think I was asking for a date with how red you are." She snickered at the thought, but was happy to see Phee return the gesture, happy to let them maintain the hold as long as she was willing. "I'm glad too, Phee. I'm glad too."
The young woman felt a tinge of temptation to close her eyes for a bit, finding the shared warmth more effective at coaxing her into a nap than the fact that she'd been awake for... What felt much longer than she actually had been. Before she had a chance to seriously consider it though Phee worked herself up to break away, at which point Kraven took her cue to do the same. "True. The world's a big place, and you never know when we'll get a Tanabata-shaped excuse to take a look at it. What about Sinnoh then? I was actually considering there before I settled on Unova." Granted, the raven-haired trainer considered all of the regions before she made a decision, but she had narrowed it down at least when it came time to take stock of her options.

☆ ☆【As she felled foe after foe after foe, Hanaka already felt so much stronger now. Perhaps soon enough she could evolve into her final form at last… Still, she didn’t exactly have the convenience of a lot of super effective coverage moves against all the opponents in this forest like Fianna did, especially against these other Water and Fighting-types that seemed to be popping up quite a bit. As she moved forth to engage another wave of pretty easy enemies, she glanced over her shoulder to see Mothra making a quick retreat back towards Kraven to be healed up. Focused on covering the Volcarona’s tracks against any stragglers that might try to get past, the Dewott clutched her scalchops tighter as she focused back on the fray in time to see the large form of a Lilligant glowering down at her. Seemingly none too pleased with the disturbance that was going on in the forest, the tall Grass-type narrowed her eyes at the little blue otter before her as she prepared to strike. Under any other circumstances Hanaka likely would’ve been very hesitant to engage such a foe, or would have otherwise requested for Fianna to handle it in her stead. But the Dewott was more than prepared as, much to the Lilligant’s shock and dismay, she was immediately battered and blown away by a rush of harsh winter winds summoned by the otter. Further empowered by the icy crown atop her head, the Grass-type stood no chance against the icy onslaught as the Blizzard attack dispatched her easily enough.
Taking a quick breather while she had a moment of relief between bouts, Hanaka turned and signaled to Phoenix that she was finished for now and was going to take a break from training. Nodding in understanding, Phoenix pulled out Hekate’s Pokeball and sent forth the Magikit, now was certainly as good a time as any for the little witch kitten to strengthen herself and flex her own skills in battle. Administering a light purple colored disk to teach her a stronger, perhaps more useful attack, the Magikit quickly dashed forth into battle with a leap. Grinning and striking a triumphant pose as she entered the field, she announced her presence loud and clear as she got into a battle stance.”Y’all better be ready to quiver n’ quake, ‘cause here comes the mighty Hekate!”she declared brashly, her eyes immediately darting towards the first opponent to peel out from the incoming wave and dash for her. A Sawk, perfect… Eyes glowing a bright purple as she channeled her attack, a cluster of similarly colored orbs instantaneously appeared before the charging Sawk. Halting it immediately in its rush far too late to possibly avoid what was surely coming, the orbs exploded strongly with a burst of psychic-infused energy that knocked the Fighting-type well back and away.
More than happy to keep the conversation going in a much lighter, happier direction, Phoenix couldn’t help but jump right at the mention of them possibly taking a trip out to Kalos sometime. However, seeing as Kraven didn’t exactly have a lot of good memories tied to Lumiose in general she quickly suggested that they could instead give it a wide berth and save it as a last stop instead. She smiled as her friend said she was on board with the idea, suggesting that they would technically have to go around the city anyways if they were going to hit up the gyms while they were there. ”Of course, naturally,” she agreed, ”I suppose that wouldn’t be a bad idea, could hardly go wrong with grabbing more badges while we’re out and about. We can think of them as our own little souvenirs to remember our trip by~” She chuckled at the thought, feeling considerably happier and in much higher spirits thanks to Kraven’s infectious enthusiasm. Any leftover aches and soreness from earlier seemed all but forgotten now, perhaps that ibuprofen might not be needed after all!
The sudden gesture of being pulled into a hug by her friend honestly surprised the redhead, not expecting it but letting herself ease into in easily enough even as she teasingly scolded Kraven in retaliation to her comment. The dark-haired girl only seemed further amused by it, casually waving her words away and reciprocating with a playful remark on the redhead’s flustered face. ”Hmph,” was all Phoenix returned, puffing out her reddened cheeks slightly into a childish-looking pout. However, it hardly lasted as she returned the hug, leaning her head against Kraven’s shoulder. Was this okay? She hadn’t exactly been thinking too much about it and it just seemed… natural to do in the moment, though if her friend had any complaints she didn’t voice them aloud. It was… strange, being this close to someone who she had begun recently recognizing as a friend. Yet, she found herself somewhat reluctant to break the hug so soon, content to share in this mutual warmth… this feeling of comfort and security between them for as long as she hoped to.
She might have just been tempted to close her eyes and take a short nap right then and there, but they still had things to take care of before nightfall would start setting in. Taking a deep breath, she gently released the hug, pulling herself upright once more as Kraven followed suit. Still, she had to wonder if perhaps there were other regions that her friend might want to see whenever they got the opportunity to leave Unova for a while. It wasn’t like they were limited to just Kalos as a possibility for a little detour trip, after all. Kraven agreed with her suggestion, saying that it was a wide world out there and they’d never know when they might get an excuse quite like the Tanabata to really get a good look at what else it had to offer. Phoenix hummed thoughtfully at the proposal of going to Sinnoh, apparently Kraven had actually been thinking about starting off her journey there before she’d ultimately settled on Unova as her choice. ”Sinnoh, huh? I’ve heard that region’s quite popular for a lot of Pokemon coordinators looking to start their own careers since it’s one of the few regions that hold contests,” she remarked, smiling warmly as she nodded in agreement, ”It sounds nice, I’ve heard the cities there are quite beautiful. Not to mention it’d be a lot of new experiences for both of us, assuming it’s a place that neither of us are really that familiar with. Perhaps you’d like to try out a contest sometime when we go there, Kraven?” She wasn’t sure if her dark-haired friend was particularly the coordinating type, though the idea of participating in a contest surely sounded like it could be a fun, new experience to try out, if only at least once.】☆ ☆

The raven-haired musician hummed quietly as she thought on the question, mulling over the idea a bit. "...Maybe, we'd have to see. My parents were always liked to watch contests on TV, but I dunno if I'd really be cut out for it." She had to admit, the showmanship was always impressive, watching eccentric trainers taking the stage with their pokemon and putting their all into brilliant displays. It was certainly more interesting than just watching fireworks, but she couldn't really see herself out on that stage... Nice as it was to have all eyes on her, she didn't see herself with the type of flashy bombast required to sell a performance. "I'd be interested in seeing what you'd come up with for it though. You could probably even get Klaus to help make it a duet~"
While Kraven quietly imagined what sort of routine Phee could squeeze out of having a mirror image of herself, she knew actually getting her out there might prove too great a hurdle. Oblivious as she was to the full extent of the redhead's shyness, the young woman couldn't help but think back to the audience she had at the cafe. The gatherings at the contest hall would easily grow well beyond double that, even assuming there would be fewer spectators for entry-level coordinators... Well, one step at a time, she thought. Phoenix was at least warming up quite nicely to her, so maybe she didn't need to worry so much. They've just gotta meet all kinds of people while they travel to get her used to it! If they were gonna be jumping around so much, the asocial tourist dynamic would have to break eventually.
Getting lost in her own thoughts again, Kraven settled back into the present when she glanced towards the sky, spotting the waning hue cast from above. "Well, we can worry about where we'll go once we've finished a bit more here--If I'm gonna be showing you around my hometown, I expect you to do the same after all." The fighter flashed a toothy grin. "Until then though, we should probably start heading out before it gets too much later. Whenever you're ready to go, let's start on our way to Castelia."
All while her trainer spoke, Mothra was busy with her fights, mopping up whatever remained until Kraven ordered her back.

☆ ☆【Phoenix tilted her head curiously as Kraven took a moment to think over the question of contests, her answer not an outright no but certainly not a yes either. She mentioned that her parents enjoyed watching them on TV, but she wasn’t sure if she’d be cut out for something like that. ”Ah, well they do have contests for both coolness and toughness… Maybe you could consider trying out one that might fit more with your style?” she suggested, though she couldn’t blame Kraven at all for not wanting to participate. Phoenix herself had seen some of what contests entailed as far as the performances, Mrs. Chu liked watching those sorts of programs from time to time. The idea of performing alongside Pokemon was indeed an appealing one, but such things were oftentimes a spectacle of grand proportions that drew in a lot of large audiences. Not exactly the most ideal place for someone who had stage fright something bad like she did… Even just battling Cilan in front of the patrons at the Striation Gym café was a bit much for her to really handle, though she’d been able to keep herself under control by focusing on the battle. A full contest hall, though, with all those people cheering and shouting from the stands would be a far different sort of experience. And in a place like that, it would only be that much more difficult to just ignore all the attention being on her…
”M-Me?” she asked, blinking a bit in surprise at Kraven’s suggestion, ”Ah, w-well… I’m not so sure I’d really be good at it either, but… I’ll at least think about it, I suppose...” The redhead chuckled softly at the proposal of having Klaus help her out to make it a duet, it could be an interesting and dynamic sort of performance that would really draw the crowd’s attention if one could pull it off well. Of course if she had Klaus out there with her it would certainly help a little with her anxiety, but even then… A lot of the coordinators Phoenix had seen from catching bits and pieces of the contest shows Mrs. Chu watched were bold, flashy… They seemed to enjoy putting on their best show-stopping performances to draw in the attention of the crowds while also securing their own possible position to come out on top of the rest. She probably could put on a decent enough performance with enough preparation and forethought, but she lacked that sort of charisma and bravado she saw in a lot of coordinators, that sense of feeling comfortable out there on stage with all eyes on her…
Phoenix’s train of thought finally stopped upon hearing Kraven speak up again, assuring that they could worry about where they’d go after they’d finished a bit more business around here and suggesting that if she was going to show the redhead her hometown she expected the same in return. ”Aha, of course, of course. All in due time,” she agreed, mirroring Kraven’s broad grin with her own small, warm smile, ”It’s still quite a bit of a distance from here to Icirrus, but I doubt it’ll be much of an issue once we’re able to fly our Pokemon to where we want. I think you’ll find it quite radically different compared to a sprawling metropolis like Lumiose or Castelia.” She glanced up, noting the slowly fading light of the sunset that covered the sky above. Was it getting to be so late already? Looking back to Kraven, Phoenix nodded in agreement that they should start heading for Castelia before it got too dark out. ”Right, let’s press onwards while there’s at least some light left,” she said with a nod, looking towards her Magikit that was still out in the field, ”Come on, Hekate, let’s finish up here so we can get going!”
The little witch huffed as she finished off a Tranquill, her new Psyshock attack doing well in helping her knock out the bird in spite of its aerial advantage, just in time to hear her trainer call out to her.”Eh? Already?! But I was just gettin’ started ‘ere!”she grumbled in protest at her own training being cut short, but with night steadily incoming on the horizon and the two trainers about ready to head out she supposed it couldn’t be helped. Eh, whatever, she supposed any additional training could be taken care of in the morning anyways. Quickly dispatching her last opponent as a Tympole jumped in to challenge her and sprayed her a bit with a nasty Acid attack, Hekate shook herself off and quickly bounded back over to reconvene with Phoenix and her teammates. A couple spritzes of potion and she was good as new again, the little cat witch huffed as she proceeded to levitate herself up so she could rest on her trainer’s shoulder.”Ya at least owe me this much,”she muttered, still somewhat disappointed at not being able to train for as long as she hoped. The redhead gave a soft smile and a couple reassuring pats to the Magikit’s head, ”Of course, you’ll definitely get first shot next time we get to more training~” Hekate simply gave her a ‘You better’ sort of look, seeming satisfied with the answer as she purred and leaned into Phoenix’s hand.
Pokemon now in hand and with Kraven’s Volcarona now back with her own trainer, the redhead smiled and nodded to her dark-haired friend. ”Shall we then?” she said, starting forth along the path winding through the rest of the forest alongside her companion as they made way for Castelia. ”Do you think we might actually have time to challenge Burgh when we get there?” she asked, wondering if they may just be able to stop by the Gym before they turned in for the night. Granted it would take them a bit to actually get through the rest of the forest, as well as factoring in the lengthy walk over the Skyarrow Bridge before they actually reached Castelia itself... Not that Phoenix really expected to have time for Burgh’s gym with how late it was getting already, though it would certainly be nice to take care of it sooner so they could move on to their next adventures in the morning.】☆ ☆

Though she was expecting such a response, Kraven still chuckled a bit when Phoenix made conceeded on her own prospects in the contest hall. She'd only been able to give her friend a small shrug at the idea of specializing in the Cool or Tough categories, but it felt a little better to actually hear their shared uncertainty. "Well, whatever you decide to do I'm sure you'd be great. Fortunately we've got time to think about it if we really wanna go through with coordinating a bit." The redhead got a few supporting pats on the back. If it really came down to it, they could always whip up some routines to keep between themselves.
The young woman's ears perked up a bit when Phee began to talk a little about her own home. "Oh? All the better then to pay it a visit then. But I guess we will have to save that for once we can fly around..." Nodding her head, she got ready to move on again in short order, recalling Mothra to her pokeball after she wrapped up the last of her fights. Phoenix's team, or at least her little psychic kitten seemed to need a little convincing before they'd be ready to pack it up, but it didn't seem to drag on too long.
Taking the lead, Kraven retraced her steps to make for Castelia a third time, and hopefully arrive there for a second. She dug into her bag and retrieved her pokedex, using it to take stock of her team before Phoenix inquired about what they could do with the remaining time. "Hmm... Maybe? Kinda depends on if the sun goes out while we're on the bridge." She put the device away as they neared the bridge, looking out over the horizon while rubbing her chin. "If you think we're ready we can certainly give it a go. Not sure if he'll be too happy about us coming in so late, but it shouldn't be too big an issue. I did wanna stop by a shop though and pick up a few supplies before I hit the gym."
