JR gave a slow nod, while Trey seemed to quietly observe Vince, as subtly as possible. Raising his eyebrows, JR glanced at Trey, who seemed to tune in a moment later, and straightened up. Nodding, he signed something, glancing to his companion, who turned back to the man. "He was wondering if he could see what berries you have. He's looking for..." Again, a double check, with an irritated look from Trey as he re-signed the specifics, and JR continued. "Beauty poffins, primarily, but he can guarantee you a top quality for that trait if you have a few berries that are... I dunno, good... beauty ones, I guess. I don't know this stuff, but he can draw up formulas and ratios if you show him what you've got, I guess." JR was looking less interested and more annoyed by the moment, but for the most part, all he was doing was a good RBF and a drifting gaze. He obviously wasn't too invested in any of this.
Cherish peered back at his trainer, before turning his attention to the lupup again, his tail lifting to sway attentively at the greeting. '... Name?' he queried back curiously, stepping in closer, breaching Xiu Feng's personal space to sniff at her cheek.

Vince nodded as JR translated Trey's request, moving to a free table before emptying the berry pocket, revealing a small mountain of berries at their disposal. "Certainly. I assume this will suffice. I just made a few beauty poffins recently for my latest contest, but I still have a few Micle and Apicot berries left over. As I understand it, Micle berries are good for enhancing beauty. Unfortunately, I'm not as familiar with anything else. Feel free to take your pick and draw up ratios if you'd like. I'd happily take any information from someone more knowledgeable on the matter. I'll need all types of poffins for future contest preparation regardless." Vince explained neutrally. Though his tone was calm, he was very interested in seeing what Trey would come up with, a quiet curiosity underlying his stoic demeanor.
Xiu Feng tilted her head and gingerly returned the curious sniffing. ('Yeah! You know, like... What's your trainer call you? My name's Xiu Feng.') She insisted, wondering if the pup was just a hatchling or something. Not that she minded. She'd be happy to teach him how to talk. She'd make a great mom! Or... Something.

Trey moved over to join Vince, though JR lingered a moment, eying the woman who had been quiet this whole time. Eventually his gaze slipped over to the pokemon, before he turned, joining the other two to look over the berries. Trey had pulled out his notebook and pen, and sifted through some fo Vince's berries while he listened. He glanced at him, and seemed to regard him for a moment, before turning to the berries again. He tucked his notebook into his arm to sign something, before he sat down, and began writing. JR glanced at Vince, then straightened, and by the tone of his voice, what he was saying wasn't a translation, but a warning. "This could take a while..."
It didn't take... too long, but Trey was writing for a while. After a bit, he straightened up, giving a wary, considering look at Vince. After a moment, he turned his notebook, showing the man the calculations, and a circled list with both their names, and a small list of which berries they would each contribute. Pausing a moment, he brought the notepad back down, and resumed writing, before handing it to Vince; on it were illustrations next to several of the notes he had made, as well as explanations for where the numbers came from, the names of the berries (so that Vince could correlate them to the ones on the table, through the illustrations), and other small notes. It wasn't exactly a lecture or lesson on things, but it gave some slight insight into the thought process, while he stood up and went about getting some of his own berries. He paused to signal to JR, before counting out the ones he would need. "He said you need to go to the contest hall to make them. He also wants to know how many you want to make-- whether you'd use all your berries or want to save them. He's fine with just making one if you prefer, and he needs to double check what he has to see what he can afford to make," the older man explained, trying not to sound bored.
Cherish was aware of his trainer's movement, and he did glance back a moment, but he didn't follow immediately. Instead he sniffed his way down Xiu Feng's neck, before moving to pass her, his tail swaying to brush against the side of her face as he very closely circled her curiously. 'Oh...' He came around on her other side, tilting his head a bit. 'He calls me Cherish...' He stopped a moment, standing very close by her side, looking over to his trainer, before he ducked down, and slipped over to join them at the other table, peering up curiously at the berries atop it. After a moment, he looked back at Xiu Feng, as if he expected her to come with.

Not realizing that mentioning his suit would be a point of embarrassment, Olivia still found herself laughing when she caught the red tint in Vince's cheeks; it'd been a while since she'd last made him blush. "I've told him the same thing," she confessed to Jian, casually jumping over his question for his younger brother. It didn't take a genius to realize that Vince didn't want to mention his participation in a contest, and she certainly wouldn't be the one to oust him. She nudged her companion gently, a smile playing at her lips as she tried to get him to relax. Jian reminded her a bit of Ducky.
Olivia scrunched her face up, playful, at Vince's insistence that he was just special. "Oh are you now?" Unable to keep her expression, she broke out into a grin as she glanced up at Licorice, as if for confirmation, "I guess I'll just have to win him over the old fashioned way. Through patience and his favorite food." The Sableye nodded slowly, it sounded like a good idea as any. It was during her silent communication with her pokemon that she missed the silent question Cheng asked his brother, and the subtle response given. "I suppose you have a point," she mused. "Maybe one of these days I'll take a trip up there to try and learn a few things." It would take a while though, with how her schedule was currently lined up.
Off to cafeteria, she looked at Vince in slight concern as he admitted to his head feeling fuzzy. "Maybe a bit of breakfast and water will help?" she suggested, resisting the urge to reach a hand out and touch his head; he had a headache, not a fever. Olivia gave him a wry smile then hummed thoughtfully, "I suppose I'll spare you, today." She just hoped that he'd feel better by the time they got on the boat, traveling across moving water while dealing with a headache was the exact opposite of what the doctor ordered.
They had only just sat down, and gotten themselves and their pokemon settled, when a stranger approached their table. Olivia looked over at the dark-haired male, then over to the friend who stood back a few feet, before offering a wave to both of them. She returned back to eating, but only after it'd been revealed that the two were here on official contest business -- poffin making, to be specific. While it was certainly a subject that intrigued her, they were on a time crunch, and her breakfast wasn't going to eat itself.
Blue, on the other hand, as hungry as he was, was more than willing to leave his food behind when the humans approached. Though it certainly wasn't their presence that interested him, but rather the strange pokemon that accompanied them. With his head tilted to the side, he watched as Xiu Feng interacted with the creature, and then watched a bit more, and a bit more... before suddenly becoming disinterested. He huffed a bit, realigning his head and turning to look at his food, while also side-eyeing Xiu and 'Cherish'. What a weird name.

Cheria Barnes Isis Nikon Olivia Beaumont (Listed as Olive)
Vince was rather grateful Olivia seemed to catch on that he wanted to keep quiet about contests. It was still just a little embarrassing for him. His family had never been really exposed to that sort of thing and he was pretty sure his father wouldn't approve. It was best to just dance around the reasoning behind his purchase for now. He felt more embarrassed with the way Jian had grinned so widely when Olivia admitted making similar comments on how good red looked on Vince though. Thankfully, before Jian could make any more suggestive comments on the subject, the group was distracted with Blue and lupups for the time being.
He smiled at Olivia as she seemed amused by the fact that he was just a special exception when it came to charming lupup. "Food is certainly the quickest way to a man's heart. I'm pretty sure that's nǎinai's claim to fame when she boasts about winning over yéyé." Vince chuckled at the thought. "Of course it was my cooking. It's the best in all of Johto." His grandmother insisted, folding her arms. "Maybe you should enter a cooking competition nǎinai~" Jian suggested. "Hah! There would be no competition." The two continued as Olivia suggested that she come to Blackthorn to learn more about Blue from the family, and Cheng smiled warmly at the idea. "We would love to have you." He insisted. Soon after, they ended the call, and Vince couldn't help but breath a sigh of relief. That had been relatively painless, all things considered. He nodded in agreement to Olivia's suggestion of food and water, and would have been more enthusiastic about it if it weren't for the fact that nodding any more vigorously would only encourage the headache he was currently trying to fight off.
Vince wouldn't be able to get much of his meal down before he would be needed for poffin making, but he didn't mind. He needed the poffins too, and honestly, he knew he wouldn't be able to eat very much with his stomach feeling the way it did. He was honestly grateful that he'd managed to get a few bites down without needing to excuse himself to the bathroom. How in the world was he going to keep himself composed on the ship to lillycove?
Thankfully, he had some time between then to focus on the poffins, and maybe give his stomach and head some time to settle. He felt uneasy about JR's warning that Trey's calculations could take a while, but he waited it out. If they ended up taking too much time, Vince could just hand over his number and suggest they give it another try at a different time. Thankfully, it didn't come to that. "A while" only actually took a few minutes thankfully, but it still felt excruciating under the circumstances. Vince eagerly looked over Trey's notes when the self-imposed mute handed them over. Trey's thought process was a fascinating one. Vince honestly had no idea that so much went into berry making. After all, he barely understood it at it's most basic level. Certain berries had more prominent attributes, like the micle berry having high beauty attributes, but according to Trey's notes, it had others as well, and each of them factored into poffin making.
Vince couldn't afford to spend too much time examining the notes though, much as he wanted to. "Right. We should hurry and head there now then." Vince agreed, handing the notebook back to Trey and forcing down one last large bite of bacon and eggs before looking to Olivia. "If you want to stay here and finish up, feel free. Maybe it would be more beneficial for me to go take care of this and you to get the tickets for the ship, but if you want to come along.... Well, you won't hear any objections from me." A faint smile tugged at his lips before he quickly packed up, mostly thanks to Yue using her powers to deposit all the berries back into Vince's bag. "We should probably start with one batch and then I'll see how much time we have. If nothing else, I am more than willing to give you my number so we can regroup later and make a pile of poffins for both of us when I'm not trying to catch a ship." He suggested with a light chuckle. Was he really cracking jokes now? Clearly, he wasn't feeling too well.
Xiu Feng wrinkled her nose with amusement as Cherish's tail tickled her face before sneezing, sniffing, and shaking her head. ('Wel it's nice to meet you Cherish! That's a neat name. I guess it means he must cherish you a lot. Ehhh? Ehhhh?') She grinned a dorky, childish grin, proud of herself in spite of the low form of humor. Xiu was mildly startled as the fox kit suddenly zipped by and over to the table where all the humans were gathered. She supposed it was interesting, and there were certainly a lot of berries being looked over. She got the sense that Cherish wanted her to follow, but she still wasn't sure she wanted to be so close to Trey and JR. Still, she supposed just sitting nearby would be fine. Plus, it meant being closer to Vince, which meant she could protect him from the other humans if they tried anything funny. Giggling, she raced over as well. ('Heehee~ Come on Blue!') She encouraged the other lupup, wanting him to join in on... Whatever it was they were doing. Making new friends was fun after all. Xiu followed Cherish's gaze up to the pile of berries on the table, tail wagging subtly. ('That's a loooot of berries.') She commented, mildly amazed. She didn't even remember Vince having this much, but Yue had gotten some for Vince's first poffin making experience, so maybe she had given him a lot. After all, Yue was able to put them all back in the bag as Xiu and Cherish watched, so surely she could have done it some other time too.

Trey nodded at the urgency, getting ready. He flashed Vince an odd look at his conversation with the woman with him, and his comment on catching a boat. He nodded more slowly, before turning, and heading out, already going through his berries. If he was contributing the Micle and chilan berries, he had enough for... two. He could buy the chilan berries while they were there. If he was contributing the pamtre... Well, it would depend what they had, but he was pretty sure he could buy enough for three. So it would depend on what Vince had... if they even had time to do more than one.
Arriving at the center, he signed at JR, who translated. "He wants to know if you'd rather contribute two micle and one chilan berry, or three pamtre berries for the first poffin. He has to go buy something regardless, but you can get those out and find a machine, and he'll meet you there," JR reiterated, eying Trey, and pronouncing the berries slowly, with a tongue clearly foreign to their names. Whatever, he didn't do berries.
Xiu Feng's pun got a simple, unresponsive look in return. '.... Yes.' It seemed Cherish wasn't aware it was a joke. Or... maybe he had no sense of humor and didn't find it funny? Or, the most likely... he was just weird. He stood up again as the humans started moving, glancing over to the other pokemon that seemed to be like Xiu Feng, but different. He slowed his gait a moment, looking at the pokemon, then looked back up at Trey, chittering curiously as he trotted along at their heels. They had better be making something for him again...

Olivia nodded slowly, with a few 'hm's to show that she was mentally taking notes down on Vince's advice. "I guess I should brush up on my cooking skills then, if I ever find a man I want to woo," she mused, and laughed along with Nǎinai'. "Maybe one day, I'll be as good a cook as you." It wasn't long after that their conversation ended, leaving Olivia with a better sense of what Vince's family was like. They were amusing, for certain, and had the sort of large-but-close family niche that she'd always wanted for herself; but noooo, her parents had to have stopped at two kids. "I like your family, Vince," she remarked.
It was while Vince was going over his poffin calculations with Trey that Olivia checked the clock, just to see how they were doing on time. She had no intention on rushing him or the other contest enthusiast -- even if his request had come from out of the blue -- but she did want an idea of what they were working with. "No, it's fine." Turning her attention to Vince, the pink-haired woman offered an encouraging smile. "You two have fun making your poffins, I'll meet you at the docks once I've finished up here." She looked over at Trey, and then his translator, and gave them both a smile in farewell before she turned to look at her pokemon. A few had already finished eating, while the rest were almost there. They'd leave soon after Vince and the other two.
Blue looked up in surprise at Xiu Feng's call, but was quick to follow after her, with only a brief glance back at his mother to make sure it was okay. Licorice gave a thumbs up, trademark grin stretched across her face. With her permission gained he trotted over to the table Xiu Feng sat at, catching Cherish's eye in the process. Why was he just... staring at him. He gave a self-conscious huff as he turned away, eyes raised up to look at the table of berries. "Are they going to eat them all?" he asked, mildly confused. That was far too many berries for the humans to eat, especially when Vince, at least, had already eaten. When the three began relocating to a new destination, Blue followed, if only because he figured Xiu Feng would do the same. She was oddly attached to Vince.

Cheria Barnes Isis Nikon Olivia Beaumont (Listed as Olive)
Vince was glad Olivia wanted to brush up on her cooking skills, but felt conflicted given her reasoning. "Perhaps I can give you lessons." Vince offered. "And then you can come to me when you want real lessons." Nǎinai insisted, causing the group to laugh a bit as Vince gave a look of mock offense. Nǎinai looked over Olivia with a stern eye of appraisal when the pinkette suggested one day she might be as good as Vince's grandmother. "Hmmm.... Perhaps." She agreed.
After the call ended, Vince chuckled lightly as Olivia insisted she liked his family. "They certainly seem to like you." He mused. "I don't know why, I mean, you're nice, funny, smart... All those traits that people normally hate in a person. Really I don't know why I've put up with you all this time. Can't you tone it down a little? You could try frowning on occasion, who knows? You might like it." He was joking, of course, if the big grin on his face didn't give it away already.
As Vince was carried away into poffin strategies, he offered Olivia the option to come and join them in the contest hall or go prepare for their ride on the boat, but she chose the latter. Vince nodded in understanding, trying not to feel too disappointed about something so silly and a choice that was perfectly reasonable. He was only going to go do this for a few minutes, and then he'd see her again. It wasn't like they were parting ways forever. Arceus... He needed to stop this. Shaking his head lightly—which was a mistake, given the still strong hangover he was struggling with—Vince grimaced and nodded. "Thanks, I'll see you at the docks then." He agreed, making his way out of the center with Trey and JR towards the contest hall. He looked to Trey out of habit as the boy signed something. Even if Vince didn't understand, it was rude not to look at someone when they were talking to you. "Alright, in that case I think I'd rather use the three pamtre berries." That was mostly because he didn't know as much about them, but Trey didn't need to know that. "Alright, see you both soon." He nodded. Once he was inside the contest hall, he made his way over to one of the poffin machines and opened his bag. "Which ones are pamtres again...?" Vince asked Yue, frowning. He really felt like an idiot with this stuff. The gardevoir sighed lightly, deciding to withold her ire for now to help Vince save time. "These capped blue ones here." She pointed out, using her psychic to lift them for Vince to see. They gathered three of them and turned the machine on so it could start warming up while they waited for Trey and JR. "If they don't show up in the next ten minutes, we're leaving." Vince insisted quietly, mostly to himself. "Vincent! Have a little faith. You could always catch another boat you know. I'm fairly certain Olivia isn't going to leave without you." Vince sighed, but he supposed she was right.
Xiu Feng pouted somewhat as her joke landed on def ears, but she supposed it was a pretty bad joke. At least Cherish didn’t seem offended so much as.... Completely unresponsive. ('Ah! Good! That’s uh... good....') She gave Blue a pleading look, not knowing how to respond to this pokemon. All of her amazing social skills that she totally had were failing her. ('I guess not.... or maybe they’re taking them to eat somewhere else? What’s a poffin?) She has missed out on Vince’s first poffin adventure since her trainer had to return her to her pokeball due to the incident with Alia at the beach, so she had no idea what was happening, but she happily followed Vince anyway, curious to find out.

Trey nodded as Vince made his decision, and swept off, with JR lingering behind. After a moment, he followed the other, upon realizing he'd probably demand 'want' help buying the berries, and communicating what he wanted. It took just a few minutes, with Trey considering buying more berries while he was there. Deciding just to sweep out a few known good ones, he grabbed the chilan berries (in bulk) and a few other useful ones, just in case. He headed back to find Vince, already running through numbers in his head, and gave a wave once he spotted him. He signed as he walked, and JR translated while he got the berries out. "He said 'sorry for the wait'," he clarified. Trey gestured for Vince's berries, before he mashed them up and started mixing the ingredients, taking the initiative to get this done as quickly as he could. Glancing at the clock, he paused to sign something else. "If you have a few extra minutes, he could turn this into a double batch. He got some Pamtre berries and could loan you one to balance otu the recipe and keep the quality," JR translated, looking at Trey out of the corner of his eye. This time, he couldn't help but sound bored. Because he was. And honestly, he would much rather this be done sooner....
Once Trey got consent, he quickly pulled out some berries, grabbing the remaining ones of Vince's and crushing them down, doubling up the batch before pouring into the machine. He checked his watch and started a time, before sliding into a chair, and pulling out his notebook. He looked up at Vince. "'You can sit down, it's going to take a few minutes," JR warned for him, translating the gist of the younger man's signing. Trey signed something else, and he continued, "He's asking what pokemon you use for your contests."
Cherish followed his trainer, somewhat detaching from the other two pokemon. It wasn't that he was antisocial, he was just focused on Trey, and he didn't socialize well, and he wasn't incredibly friendly to strangers. He was... comfortable with them. Affectionate at times, oblivious to personal space, but he was a pokemon that didn't tend to think things out much, and so he didn't consider how his actions may seem to others. He sat down at the machine as his trainer got to work, and looked over at the other pokemon as he caught their conversation. 'It's food,' he explained, his tail waving slowly behind him in excitement, 'Pokemon food. It's very good, especially the ones Trey makes.' He looked back up at his trainer, then moved over, rubbing against him, and sitting back down. He received a soft pat

Vince gave a curious look between JR and Trey as th former told him to wait on Trey's behalf, but did as instructed and handed over his berries when Trey gestured for them. He watched Trey with interest as he worked, trying to get a feel for things since he would undoubtedly be doing this frequently in the future. As Trey, or rather JR as Trey's interpreter, suggested making a double batch, Vince checked his watch and nodded in approval. "I think I'd have time for that." He agreed in spite of JR's obvious boredom, because Vince felt quite the opposite. He was very interested in what Trey was doing because he could watch a professional at work. Or, at least Trey seemed like a professional, but it could be just that he was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject. "It's fine. I prefer to stand." He insisted with a shake of his head as JR suggested he take a seat. He appreciated the warning, but given that he'd be sitting on a boat for a while in the near future, he figured he aught to stretch his legs now while he could.
He also quietly wondered why JR bothered to stick around translating for Trey when he very clearly wasn't interested in the subject matter, but said nothing. When asked what pokemon he used for contests, Vince let out Wei He. The kingdra emerged in a small puff of sparkles from the reminants of his now used seal on his pokeball from the last contest, his makeup from the last contest still adorning his face and scales. "This is Wei He, I just used him for my last beauty contest, but I'm not sure if he will take that place permanently or not. I am admittedly only just starting to study contests. However, I am enjoying them so far." He nodded, looking perplexed by the seal that no longer seemed to be working. "However, for a trial run, I suppose I did fairly well, considering I won..." He chuckled. Vince wasn't trying to be immodest but... Well, considering he'd known next to nothing about contests coming into this one, frankly he was surprised he'd won. Then again, he'd had Yue's help and Olivia's reassurance to get him through it. ”Are the seals only a one time use? I thought they lasted longer...” He asked with a frown, peeking off the sticker from the water stone inspired pokeball.
Xiu Feng tilted her head as Cherish explained that poffins were food of some kind. ('Ohhh. It does smell good.') She watched with mild disappointment as Vince stored the poffins away in his bag rather than offering them to anyone. She wanted to try one!

Trey shrugged a bit as Vince decided to remain standing, reclining in his chair some to leisurely sign and listen while they waited. He looked over at the kingdra as it was released, though his brow furrowed, and he signed something at it's entrance. "He says you should be careful with those seals," JR warned for the man, watching him sign out of the corner of his eyes, "They're literally a one time use, so you should only apply it right before you're going to release the pokemon for the appeal round. Otherwise you're wasting them." He brought his words back to Vince and shrugged. "His words."
Advice given, Trey shifted an appraising look to Wei He, analyzing the makeup and the pokemon's appearance, before signing again. "He says interesting choice, it goes well with the beauty contest category. And that it's impressive you won your very first trial run," JR continued, eying Trey in an odd, almost skeptical way as he did. Shaking his head, both men glanced at the machine as it went off, and Trey got up to retrieve the poffins, handing two of the four to Vince. He tossed Carona's pokeball up and released the pokemon, who appeared in a small flash of light, eyes opening as it faded and his wings expanding out to keep him aloft. His gaze opened to Vince, staring a moment, before shifting over to Trey, who held up the poffins, then set them down for the pokemon to enjoy. Carona lowered himself, but kept hovering in the air as he gathered up one of the poffins in his four feet and began nibbling on it. Trey shifted his attention back to Vince, signing again. "He says thanks, and wishes you luck on future contest stuff, but knows you have to go. He'll probably be doing his own contest soon, but if you ever need help making poffins or have questions or anything..." JR trailed off, side-eying the teen as he wrote down his number and handed it to Vince, deciding to let the man finish the thought himself. He was sure he could get it.
Cherish continued watching Trey, tail swishing, and hummed agreement with Xiu Feng. He stood as his trainer got up to get the poffins, and stood on his hind legs, placing his forepaws on Trey's legs, watching them steadily. He blinked, though, when he released Carona, and pushed off, stepping back, still standing, before finally dropping onto all fours. His tail swished as he watched, before turning, giving a little hop, and looking to Xiu Feng and the other, one paw lifting a bit. "Would either of you like to play?" he asked with interest, looking ready to paw curiously at them. He blinked and glanced up as Trey snapped his fingers to get his attention, though, and at a shake of his trainer's hand, hesitated, before sitting back down, looking to the others again. "Next time, maybe?" he asked instead. It seemed they were parting ways, so maybe it was a little late to try and play....

"Oh?" Olivia quirked an eyebrow, playfulness written across her entire face. "So you can cook more than just soup and sandwiches?" Of course, she didn't mind taking lessons from Vince, in fact she could see it as being rather enjoyable, but she just couldn't resist poking a little fun at him. The young woman glanced back to the screen, attention returning to Na'iani, before nodding her head with a knowing look. "I look forward to that."
Olivia nodded her head slowly as Vince listed off traits, her traits, that usually turned people away. "It's a real mystery..." she agreed, just as 'perplexed' as her companion was. She hummed softly, taking his advice to heart, before forcing the corners of her mouth down into as deep a frown as she could manage. "How about this?" She moved only a small portion of her lips as she spoke, in an attempt to maintain her frown even throughout their conversation. Though it quickly resulted in the pinkette's laughter, and the frown was replaced with a smile.
"See you there." Giving two finger guns to sign off with, Olivia watched the three males leave before standing to her feet. Even if there were still a few pokemon eating, she could at least start cleaning up and preparing to leave. It was good timing too, as by the time she returned to the table the last of her pokemon had finished eating. "Alright. Let's get going then," Olivia announced, motioning for those who could to push their bowls together to hasten their clean-up, which was followed by the return of the majority of her party.
With her business concluded in the cafeteria she made her way quickly to the boat duck, not quite running there but keeping a clipped stride, because while they still had time she so no reason in dawdling. The line she found herself at the back of, upon her arrival, was just proof that she'd had no time to stop and smell the roses. With a soft sigh Olivia set herself in for the wait ahead of her -- with only a hope that she wouldn't be standing in it for too long -- before absently tossing a glance to Elgyem. Elgyem didn't share her look, and instead kept her attention focused on the humans ahead, no doubt reading their minds... She had a loose understanding of privacy. "I do not," Elgyem spoke, suddenly, and turned her head thirty degrees to look down at Olivia. "I just do not care for it.""That's not any better," Olivia insisted.
Elgyem turned her head back around. "Perhaps it isn't."
Blue, with interests only in... certain things, didn't care too much about the poffins that were, apparently, being created or Cherish's odd behavior. But, Xiu Feng did. "They look weird..." he muttered, mostly to himself, once Vince and the other two humans had finished creating their pokemon food. He didn't trust food humans made, with the exception of the pebble-y things his mom ate and declared safe, and he much preferred berries and gem stones. Natural things.

Trey waited until Carona had finished eating, before standing up, and putting his things away. He gave a nod of farewell to Vince, and let JR give a farewell for both of them, before moving off to go register for the next contest. Carona had done great in his first one, but that one had been pretty easy. He was pretty sure the Deuce ribbon shouldn't be too difficult either, especially with the benefits of the poffins, but you never know. He was still going to take his time to groom Carona and make sure he had everything set. Before that, though, and while he waited for the dressing rooms to be available, he figured he might do a little extra shopping with the cash he had left....
A short shopping trip later, Trey had everything he needed, and headed to the dressing room. He brushed over Carona's fur and used the back to shine his skin. He added on a headband, and when he recalled the pokemon to prepare to leave for the contest, he put on a smoke seal. This really wasn't that big of a challenge -- he assumed it wouldn't be, at least -- but he still didn't want to take too many chances. He and Carona hadn't practiced enough to really pull off any combos, so he wouldn't be able to even risk trying that this time. Hopefully after this, though, they could practice enough to try it next time...

Trey strode up to the stage, standing behind with Carona's pokeball in his hand, his eyes closed. JR had been left behind, and he'd recalled Cherish, so it was just him back there. He knew his opponent was on the other side, and it was someone he'd actually gone up against before, but he was trying not to pay it any mind. You were sort of condemned to see a few familiar faces, given that contests were still growing, and not yet particularly popular enough to draw in a large amount of people. Honestly, he was just glad there were enough people around each contest hall to provide a challenge for those getting into it, even if some seemed to be on staff, ready to travel to meet up and compete with other performers.
When it was his turn, he strode out, and tossed Carona's pokeball with a flourish of his hand and a flick of his wrist. The ball spun like a frisbee as it soared through the air, before halting and snapping open to release the pokemon. Smoke billowed out and Carona appeared in the midst of it, flames licking through the air, warming the smoke with a red light as the pokemon looked out across the crowd. Beating his wings, the heat grew, and the smoke began to glow red, before he spun, whipping his wings through the air to scatter the smoke with heat waves chasing out after it. The spectacle dispersed and Carona lowered himself back down, bowing his head, and then sweeping his wings forward to glide back, and settle in next to his trainer.
The pair watched, one more obviously relaxed than the other one, as their opponent stepped forward, and released a Magic Leaf, eliciting a soft sigh of relief from Trey. Not that he was that worried, Overheat gave them a pretty solid start, but still, it was nice to know it was a decent gap. He glanced over at Todd, who was smiling and welcoming his pokemon back from the beautiful, greenery-based display. At least the guy was a good sport... Either he didn't mind that they'd competed before, and he'd lost, or he didn't remember. Trey wasn't really insulted either way; he doubted he'd remember the face of everyone he competed against, after he'd been doing this for a while.
The total was tallied and, unsurprisingly, Carona went first. The two might not have practiced a lot, but Trey could communicate the basics with his pokemon, ie what move to use, and Carona seemed to have some inherent (or perhaps preexisting) skill and knowledge of contests. And both knew that Overheat was definitely out. That was a move that was best combined with others, or saved until last, and Trey had no intention of trying a combo just yet. So he started with an alternative tactic, a good way to begin, so that he could set himself up for something better the next turn, and protect himself just in case the other pokemon had a more aggressive moveset. As it turned out... he chose the right one. Light Screen might have been better, but this one still buffeted the damage to come, and set him up well for the next one.
Carona put on a show with Quiver Dance, his wings sparkling as he spun and twirled through the air, kicking up leaves left by his opponents previous move and carrying them up into the air with him. At the end, he again gave a little tilt to the audience and judges, before turning to waft himself back to Trey's side. Even his calm demeanor, pumped up by the thrill of such an intricate and concentrated dance, wasn't quite enough to keep him from quickly dropping back as his opponent skated out, a beam of ice rising up in front of her. The clefairy held her hands before her, freezing the ground and gaining momentum as she glided along behind it, before angling her hands down, and propelling herself into the air. Ice rose up after her, and as she neared the top of the building, she stopped the ice beam, her momentum carrying her a little further, giving her just enough time to twirl, and then land delicately atop the pillar of ice she had formed. Trey couldn't help but move to get a better look, impressed by the performance. It was... a straightforward approach, but the precision and control was impressive....
Glancing at Todd, he found his competitor to be gazing fondly up at the fairy pokemon, though he seemed to sense the look, and flashed a well-meaning smile over at Trey. The false-mute shifted, then stepped back, averting his gaze, and glancing at Carona, who was recovering from the startle. At least that hadn't been as bad as it could have, had he been more on edge....
Trey wasn't the only one with strategy, it seemed. Somehow, they found themselves going second next turn-- maybe it had been bad, after all-- and Todd and his clefairy seemed to have a strategy at the ready for that, as well. Another magical leaf, a beautiful dance accentuated by the glittering plant life, and even when Carona tried to follow up with an amplified Fiery Dance, they still couldn't push themselves to first the next round. The growd's excitement only grew, and Clefairy's Rain Dance brought the virtual house down, gaining quick and clear favor. Things were not looking good. They may have done well in the presentation, but they were quickly starting to drown in the performance. Trey looked down, his eyes darting across the floor as if trying to find some clue as to what to do while his mind raced. They were going to lose. They were going to. He'd come prepared, Heatwave was an excellent opening move, but this guy was using strategy well beyond this level, and Trey couldn't even fully take advantage of the one he had set up. He couldn't, not with... out....
They were going to lose no matter what. He didn't know the judge's tally -- and if he had, perhaps he wouldn't have made such a hail mary call -- but if nothing else, he felt like he had something to prove. If he won when his competitor was throwing so much weight to tactical advantage.... it wouldn't even be worth it. He was clearly the inferior competitor here, he wasn't using nearly as much tactic, and in his mind, performance was where pride laid. First impressions were good and all, but if you couldn't hold yourself up through the rest of the competition, you didn't really deserve to earn the ribbon.
He lifted his head and looked at Carona, signing for him to do Fiery Dance -- and also overheat. Their opponent was performing her last move -- another Magical Leaf, thrilling the crowd with its display -- which gave him just enough time to try and convey what he needed to. Carona blinked, then tilted slightly, and Trey glanced briefly at the audience, before speaking in a very low, quiet voice, as subtly as he could. "I need you ta try, Carona. Jus'... give it a shot, ta pull them both off. I trust ya in figurin' out how ta best combine 'em," he urged. The pokemon beat his wings steadily to stay aloft, and stared evenly back at his trainer. Before it could respond in any distinguishable way, both turned to the sound of their turn being called, and after a soft beat, the pokemon swept forward. Trey stood back, shoulders straight, more tense than before, his hands balled into fists. No one could have seen or heard him speak.... they were too far. He was sure of it. And whether this would work, and bring them a justified victory, or fail, and cast them into a condemned lose, was completely up to Volcarona now.
The fire insect carried himself to center stage, and began beating his wings. Heat radiated from him, and the air started to quiver. In a slightly choppy, but somehow successful ascent, he moved gracefully, flames flickering around him, shimmering in the blazing air. It wasn't perfect, it wasn't practiced, and it certainly wasn't primed, but.... it worked, and he pulled it off. And the sight simply took Trey's breath away. None of his pokemon had done a combo before... none had really tried. He'd goofed around with some with Cherish, once, but it certainly didn't work. And this... this did. It was amazing... it was inspiring. To just imagine what they could do with actual practice.....
He came back down to earth as the performance ended, and found himself breathing in deep from the breath he'd been holding. He looked at Carona in awe as the pokemon returned, but it simply gazed back at the judges as they tallied their score. And despite Todd's incredible performance... it seemed the audience and the judges were just as impressed by that final show, and, by nine points, Trey and Carona won.

No sooner had Trey and Carona been announced the winners did the contest hall erupt into wild cheering, spectators and judges alike getting out of their seats to give both coordinators and pokemon a, well deserved, standing ovation. It'd been a spectacle to behold, truly! The MC, with a grin of her own, extended a hand out to Trey, encouraging him to step forward to, not only take a bow, but receive his ribbon and a few other additional winnings. "Once again! Let's give it up for Trey and Carona!" The woman exclaimed afterwards, and joined in on another round of applause.
