Lots of times to avoid dissapointment I'll watch the movie and then read the book... the bad part it that the movie can influence how you think of the book. Personally I love this series! I can't wait to read Lyra's Oxford and I had no idea that there was going to be a fourth book!

I perfer to view the original source first, book or movie (books based on movies aren't usually that great).
Is Lyra's Oxford a sequel, or just supplemental material?

Lyra's Oxford is just an extra book that adds somd background information to a couple of things I think.

I loved those books! I didn't really like the religious aspect because I'm a Christian, but I loved the characters, and the daemons. I think most people want one. I didn't really think Lyra's Oxford was that great. It lacked something the trilogy had.

I loved these books. It's a shame the controversy over it put the movies to an end. I would have liked to see the other two produced. I had originally picked up the second book first at a sale, then I hunted for the first book, and finally, a neighbor who worked for a publisher handed me all three "editor" copies in a box of books she was getting rid of. I quickly absorbed all three after that. I don't understand why people had to take the book so literally with the religious association because that wasn't the point at all. People forget to look deeper and see that authors tend to refer to what we know to better get their point across... like a big metaphor. It's harder to explain to the average person what is really in your head when you're thinking of this completely unique idea but you don't have the right words to explain it in a way it can be easily understand. Hence the creation of "metaphors" which is what the entire "Adam & Eve" scenerio is... a big metaphor.

lilybee Lyra's Oxford was really weird and confusing, I thought. The books were really great. Sometimes they were hard to get into, but on a whole, it was really entertaining. I heard they're cutting religion out of the movie, which is confusing because the whole story is based on religion. I agree on the whole they were absolutely amazing but they took a while to get into at the start and sometimes the book slowed down for a while, still amazing books

The first one was hands down the best in the series. It took me about two years to finish the second one. And I only finished it because i had gotten them for christmas a long while back and figured it was time to finish. However, I cant seem to get past the half way point in the third one. The same things are happening in the third, that happened in the second. I actually think its just really repetative. But then that's also just my opinion.

When i was a wee lass, this was the first "long" book i'd ever read. It took me forever, and when i finally got to the end, it read: End of Book One.
I was overjoyed there would be more to the story, but really upset that they weren't out yet at the time i read The Golden Compass.
I really like these books. They are a good children's story, and they are interesting and have a depth that most children's books lack.

I thought I was the only one old enough to have had to wait for the other books. It didn't take me long to read the Golden Compass though, I devoured that thing, staying up all night to finish it. I was weeping at the end, first time a book really made me cry. By the time the next book came out most of my intense fervor had died down. The Subtle Knife was a disappointment but then, there's really no way it could have lived up to my expectations. I also wonder if being those few years older made a difference. By the time The Amber Spyglass came out I didn't much care anymore. They're all good books but The Golden Compass was by far my favourite.
