I thik the reason platformers are dieing out is because developers seem to have such a hard time selling them these days. A good story often makes a good platformer or even just a good game for me, but many people these days won't touch it if it doesn't have the very latest graphics there is, and that's sad.
Also, many people find platformers too repetitive, collect, jump, run, collect, run, jump. The thing that makes a platformer fun is having to collect thing without it bogging down the gameplay. But it can't be too easy that the player doesn't have to just stop every now and then say "Now what do I do here?" That requires a lot more thinking and planning to make a game like that, and many developers would just rather make a good ol 1st person shooter with lots of blood and it'll sell just as well.
But I morn the lack of new platformers. The PS2 had quite a few, but I haven't seen many decent ones on any of the new gens.

I just wish that they'd remake some of the old Platformers for the next gens. I'd play them again just for that.

...Dying out? Super Mario Galaxy is one of the top-selling games of this generation.
Banana-nana When you say platforms, I'm so old school I don't think of 3D games like Spiro and Crash Bandicoot. I think of the old side scrollers. blaugh Gah, I'm old. But I rented Brawl this week and found it funny that it has a side scrolling element (you know, other than the obvious). I, too, thought this thread was going to talk about games like Super Mario World, Mega Man, Metroid, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ninja Gaiden, Prince of Persia, Rayman... there are tons of others.
And yeah, I guess you do have to categorize Brawl as a sidescroller. 3nodding

I know she said beside Ratchet & Clank, but I played a demo on PS3, and rather enjoyed it. They have Crash: Mind over Mutants coming up, too, but the Bandicoot's story is wearing very thin. There's Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Paper Mario as well.
Besides kiddos claiming that platformers are boring, I believe that movie tie-ins are to blame as well. Nearly all movie tie-ins these days are platformers, and often of quite poor quality.
My eleven yer old cousin claims Ratchet & Clank was boring, but then, he'd rather play Rainbow Six Vegas... rolleyes
