Dear journal,

Eku did not come, I was slightly worried. Minerva seemed happy enough to be watching the flaling stars tho. I wonder if I'll ever have a chance to give her a sibling.

C E L E S T I A L

“I don’t see why we must go out mother, I’d much rather stay inside and read.” Esmeralda sighed heavily as she tried to pull away from her mother. The older Dovaa was having none of it.

“Your father and I haven’t bought you gifts for your graduation or your wedding, why can’t you just let your good old mother take you out for a nice day?” The Peisio Dovaa rolled her eyes and sighed heavily. “Your daughter is fine sweetheart, she’s with your father her grandfather may I remind you. We don’t get to see her often and she’s our only grandchild so far!”

There was no denying that, none of her brothers were married and it was quite true she didn’t visit the capital quite as often as she’d like to with Minerva. Esmeralda pushed the issue aside, if her mother wanted to have a nice mother daughter day then who was she to ruin it? They’d both been walking along the shops, looking here and there for things but nothing had quite caught Esmeralda’s eyes. Not until her mother pulled her along a few dark alleys and they ended up in a shop with the most peculiar items. Esmeralda had never been here before.

“Why don’t you go and take a look at the books while I speak with the shop keeper? I know you’re just dying to get your hands on those books.” Her mother knew her well and Esmeralda drifted towards the book section of the shop with interest. She didn’t keep an open ear on her mother, but she did catch a few bits and pieces of the whispered conversation.

“… Tear … “

“ … I don’t sell that kind of stuff anymore…”

“… A liar…”

“Fine, wait here.”

“Esmeralda, come here. I’ve found your gift.” The Peisio Dovaa pretended not to have heard her mother, turning her back and quietly walking a little ways off. Though it wasn’t long before her mother popped next to her and peered down at what she was reading.

“Leave the dusty books aside, this is something that is worth much much more.” Esmeralda really didn’t want to give up the book she was currently reading but her mother plucked the book right out of her hands and placed it back onto the shelf. Warriors were so… Forward in the motions Esmeralda narrowed her eyes at her mother. “I swear to you this is much better than your book. Come along now.” Her mother was really going out of her way to either annoy Esme or actually make her care enough for the gift she was about to receive.

The shopkeeper had returned and was holding a lacquered box in his hands, as they got closer he put the box down and extended it towards the duo. Esmeralda gave her mother a look who only urged her on to open the box. Esmeralda opened the box and uncovered a celestial tear, her mouth instantly dropped open. “You got me a celestial tear for my wedding and graduation?”

“And your birthday… Both your father and I got it for you. Happy?”

“Oh very much so.”

D E S P E R A T E

With Ekundayo gone Esmeralda had sped up drastically her claim to master position. While it left her daughter at home with Muriel alone more days than Esmeralda wished, she had no choice. She’d been thinking of moving back into the Dovaa city with her daughter where she might be safer and while the thought displeased her since this was her home with Ekundayo, she had little choice. Her mother continuously brought it up and they’d even gone shopping for homes together. Esmeralda didn’t know how to feel about it all, where had the love of her life and husband gone off to?

There was little time to think of such matters now; she was heading for a familiar shop where her mother had bought her a very special kind of tear. Minerva was in tow, hand in hand with her and skipping about. Her father had been missing for a few years and she had stopped asking where he was. Esmeralda couldn’t tell her if he was dead or not, she had no idea herself but she knew time would prove to erase Minerva’s memories of her father. She’d never thought she’d have actually have thought of that, but now there was no choice.

The bell in the little shop rang and Minerva let go of her hand to run about and touch things. She was getting so old now, Esmeralda glanced at her while scales and horns and then at her purple flame eyes. The day was coming when her daughter would eventually pick a clan and would be off out hunting dragons. Muriel had mentioned in passing that her daughter may be Kiandri, her daughter was already quite the fire cracker she couldn’t wait to see her all grown up. Esmeralda moved towards the counter where Arick waited.

“Welcome, how my I serve you.” He offered her a brilliant smile.

“My mother Seristas and I came here once; she offered me a particular tear as a gift. I require one tear again.”

“I have no idea what you’re speaking of.” His smile faltered ever so slightly however, Esmeralda offered him a grim expression of her own. She wasn’t here because she felt like it, she wasn’t here because she wanted to be, she was here out of necessity.

“Listen, if I have to get my mother for this transaction I don’t mind doing so. However, I will be back so you might as well cough up the goods now.” Esmeralda glanced at her daughter when she heard a crash of books; Minerva was picking up a stack of them.

“Alright alright.” Arick glanced at the door and then went to the back of his shop, Esmeralda heard some rustling and then he came back with a box. He slide it across the counter towards Esme and glanced at the door to guard it. Esmeralda opened the box, there was a velvet cloth and when she removed it she revealed the two tears. The Peisio Dovaa covered them up quickly and handed Arick his payment.

“Be careful with those.”

“Always am.” Esmeralda grabbed Minerva and left the shop box in hand.

Dear journal,

Things are happening, where do the Mara come from?

“Mom, what if daddy comes back?” MInervas sad voice echo’d Esmeralda’s own thoughts as she pulled one last time on the chains that closed her home.

All Ekundayo had to do was find her parents’ home and they would point him in the right direction. She was after all not returning to her family home, but had found and bought a new home in Taliuma to live with her daughter. After the devastation the Mara had caused, it would be safer for her and Minerva to be there and not confined to a city or on their own in a forest. Esmeralda would keep this home, would check up on it from time to time but she could no longer stay in the house alone without Eku. Minerva would be leaving soon to go on adventures and grow, it would break her heart to be left back home alone.

“He’ll know where to find us.”

All their belongs had already been packed and shipped to their new home, but as Esmeralda pushed the door to the new house in the city she couldn’t help but feel emptiness. The crates were piled high and Minerva was humming softly to herself as she moved from one crate to the other grabbing things and placing them where they belonged. She’d be getting training soon, picking her clan and then going off as Esmeralda had done all those years ago. She suddenly wished she’d had more children with Ekundayo, more children to fill her home with would have been nice.

The Peisio Dovaa began to copy her daughter, opening create after create and placing things in their new environment. Soon she’d begin dinner and then put Minerva to bed because tomorrow would be another long day. What would she even do? Perhaps take up her master research again; she had a very long process ahead of her if she wanted to reach it. Then she’d be able to relax and wait for Minerva to give her little grandchildren! Granted, whoever could handle her daughter would most definitely going to be hard to find. Little firecracker daughter of hers that she was.

By the time the stars had settled in the night sky, Esmeralda sat by the window gazing out at the street below with a cup of wine in hand and a book on her lap. Minerva had gone to bed and was surely sound asleep since the rustling had stopped. Had Emeralda seen herself in this position years ago at the very age Minerva was now? Never. She thought she’d be married, which she was, with her husband next to her, which he wasn’t, and many children, she only had one. She didn’t even know if she wanted to remarry at this point.

Too much work Esmeralda thought bitterly. She put the wine glass to her lips and tipped the cup so that all the liquid went down her throat, then she got up and brought the empty cup in the kitchen. Esme massaged the bridge of her nose and moved through the room while blowing out the candles before following the last one left in her room. Was this a fresh start?

They’d told her she had to get on with her work. Esmeralda had set herself a date on when she wanted to become a master but that time had come and gone without her lifting a finger. The masters were angry with her, they had seemingly taken up interest in her again once she’d moved back into her old office in the scholar building instead of wokring from home and probably adhering to what they thought was proper Dovaa behavior. Esme figured her daughter looking quite like a Dovva also helped her cause; she blended right in with the rest of the populace minus her eyes. They were the only definitive trait that said she was Hybrid.

None the less, she had been called in by the masters and given a severe talking too. Get back to work or lose your title. They had given her no other alternative; they wanted to assimilate her back into their ranks quickly. Esmeralda almost felt like they were pushing her back to work and would continue to push her to stay. The whole ordeal exhausted her beyond what she already felt. However, if she did work on her mastership it would give her something to focus on instead of staying home and worrying about Minerva.

The Kiandri had been her first order of business; she’d never been interested in those dragons in particular however Minerva had changed that. She was a little surprised at her choice but she, as her parents had done, only supported her daughter in her decision. Which was why Esmeralda was now in new desert garb watching a few of the Kiandri from a far. They seemed to have a pretty bad temper, more explosive than the Friani who simmered before blowing. Still, she was not threatening them and as such they ignored her for the most part.

The desert reminded her of her time with Eku. As Esmeralda sketched a few of the Kiandri her mind was elsewhere and soon she was drawing up a portrait of Ekundayo as she remembered him when they were younger. Esmeralda pulled herself out of her reverie, tore the page from her sketch book and gently folded it before putting it away in her bag. This was not the time to mourn, she still had work to do and she needed to get it done. If she didn’t return with something to show the masters they would only grow more forceful in their demands.

Esmeralda took down a few more notes, making observations and writing little notes to herself for when she did her full report. She’d also gotten quite a few sketches done, those would accompany her work. She was glad to have found a nest to sketch out and even a couple of fighting poses since some Magescians had arrived on scene. Now she was packing up as the sun began to lower itself over the edge, it was time to head back and go through what she’d collected that day before compiling it and reworking everything into something neat.

O F F E R I N G S

Over the years Esmeralda had collected quite a few things on her travels, eyeing them now Esmeralda debated giving them up to her daughter. She could not train her daughter to hunt dragons, if this was the only thing she could provide her with then so be it. She did not need these items after all, certainly not as a scholar and she’d already sketched and done as much research on the dragon souls and tears as she could. They had been useful to her in her youth, but now they were collecting dust on her shelf. She had a few other odds and ends she wanted to give Minerva because she would not have a need for those either. Even if Minerva did not have a use for them, perhaps she would pass them on to her child as well. It almost saddened her to part with the things she’d had with her for so long. Minerva would have better use for them however.

Ever so carefully, Esmeralda took the orbs one by one and wrapped them up in a velvet material and then placed them in a small wooden box. She’d bought the fabric and box specifically for this purpose. The orbs were the things she would miss the most, collecting them had been quite an interesting adventure and they did connect her closely to the dragons. The tears were also wrapped and placed inside the box, and then it was sealed. These would be the most useful to Minerva, Esmeralda did not doubt her daughter would benefit greatly from these. The climbing kit, taming jewel, and the bottled dream would be kept separately but next to the box. She’d personally never had a need for the climbing kit and she had not tried to tame anything in a very long time. Best to give them up to her daughter. Esmeralda deposited the items on Minerva’s bed before she took off to meet with the masters. She didn’t know when her daughter would be back and if she would return home, best to leave the items in her room for her to find.

The masters were pleased with her work on the Kiandri, Esmeralda felt their grip loosen. They encouraged her to go out more, seek the dragons once more and perhaps review her old work or offer new sketches. The masters were greedy for information, no one else was doign her kind of research after all. Which was probably why they had given her such a hard time when they’d found out that she was being courted by Ekundayo, but she had still been granted her Expert title. Now, they all seemed glad that they had not held her back because things had gone their way anyway. With her husbands disappearance she’d returned to the Dovaa capital and they were probably hoping she would remarry a Dovaa. While Esme wasn’t too sure on how that would go down, for now she wanted to live in the present and not have to worry about the future.

R E T R E A T

Esmeralda was a little less reluctant to go out into the world again the second time around she went out for an assignment. Since she’d researched on the Kiandri for Minerva, Esme decided that her next target would be updating her information on the Peisio because she was of the same clan. She figured she wouldn’t mind as much going out if she was doing it for herself to begin with. She’d crossed paths with Minerva actually and handed her the research she’d done for her daughter to have a read over, the expression on her face was all she needed to know it was worth going out.

While Esme didn’t go out right away back on the field, she took her precious time rereading her old notes on the Peisio. Then she’d told Minerva she’d be gone for a week and packed for such an excursion. As she put her things in her pack Esmeralda couldn’t help but smile, just like the old days. With the exception that now she really did need a Hastar if she wanted to be out there for a whole month. She borrowed one from her parents and used it to bring more things with her this time around.

It was much easier to find the Peisio than the Kiandri had been especially considering this time around she had chosen a little island that the Peisio liked to go to sunbath. The island was pretty small, but the beaches were beautiful and there was enough jungle for her to make a suitable home for herself and still be able to study the dragons. It took Esmeralda the whole day to set herself up on the island and only because she’d done extra prep.

She’d arrived early to scourge the island and picked up the fallen wood to build herself a platform of sorts to set the tent on. She’d used vines and what little rope she could spar to build it and then had set the tent on it. She’d picked a nice spot where some of the jungle would cover over her tent and had used spar wood to reinforce the structure. You just couldn’t be sure when a storm would hit you and with so many Peisio about, one of them was bound to throw a fit at some point and brew up a storm. Maybe next time she’d bring back more things and keep a permanent hideaway here.

The second day Esmeralda was finally about to sit and simply sketch out the dragons and look for any nests while trying not to get caught. Esme would have to ask her father if he’d be able to help her out at all with teaching her on how to reinforce the structure. She did not want a single person stepping foot on this island other than herself. It was a selfish thought, but this was her retreat. When the light began to fad and the Peisio were huddled together on the beach for sleep, Esmeralda finally got up to go back to her own tent.

V A C A T I O N

Still on her island, Esmeralda woke up when the sun rose across sea. She turned on the hard bed she`s constructed, waking up a little stiff offered her the opportunity to stretch out a bit and then grab something quick for breakfast. She opted for a loose dress that hung around her shoulders with a slit along both legs to allow her free movement. She`d removed everything else and kept it in her bag to use as a pillow. She didn`t need shoes or gloves while she was out on the island and she would have been immensely inconvenienced by them anyway.

Moving to the exterior of her tiny hut, Esmeralda gazed about and took a bit from the fruit in her hand. All she wanted to do was walk on the beach and relax. Taking a deep breath, she went back in and picked up her other bag that had her supplies for work. She wasn’t here to relax though, well maybe just a little but she still had work to get done and then she could play if she had time. Moving through the jungle barefoot was more pleasant than she thought, she wasn’t young anymore but she seemed to still be lithe in her movements.

It was still quite early in the morning by anyone standards, Esmeralda had woken up with the sun after all. Most of the Peisio were still sleeping under the sun; they’d probably head into the water in a few hours for some food. Dropping her back by the trees, Esmeralda made her way over to the ocean and threw the dress over her head. There wasn’t anyone around so the Dovaa went into the water without anything on and was soon under the water and having a morning swim. That was the great thing about being a Peiosio Dovaa, she could stay much longer under the water.

With her morning routine over, Esmeralda got out of the water and settled herself up against a tree at the edge of where the beach met with the jungle. Her eyes went to the Peisio dragons who around this time had begun to awaken and move about towards the water. Those early risers were back on the beach, bellies large and round and full of fish, they’d be settling for their own naps now. The mothers tended to be the early risers to return with food for their young who couldn’t go off by themselves yet. By staying back the young received protection and the mothers could go and do as they please, once they returned though it was time to care for the young.

Esmeralda sketched out a few more of the Peisio dragons. She’s have to leave soon, move on and find the other dragons of research. She was actually in the mood to find and study either a Diabi or Aedun, perhaps she’d start with the Diabi and see if maybe on her trip she’d stumble on Ekundayo… But that was wishful thinking on her part.

D A R K N E S S x C O M E

The Diabi had of course been her choice dragon to find once Esmeralda had finished her work on her vacation island. She’d return later to this resort, the Celestial Plane was nice but she just wanted to be alone for a while or maybe forever. In any case, Esmeralda packed up her things, said goodbye to her little piece of paradise and headed on home when the boat arrived to take her. She’d stay a few days at home to gather supplies, touch base with Minerva if she was home. Her daughter was starting to grow much faster than she’d anticipated.

Souldul had never been her favourite place to be, Esmeralda still to this day as many times as she’d been here, couldn’t get how eerie and dark the place was. At least though, she knew the ins and out from her younger days and knew how to get around without getting noticed much. So she spent little time in the capitol and was out quickly as she usually did, Oblivionites were a little more tolerant than before but she didn’t want to push her luck. Esmeralda had very little notes on the Diabi, they weren’t exactly her favourite dragons.

It took her in all eight days of trekking through the force to track down a single Diabi and that was short compared to other times she’d tried. Esmeralda began sleeping during the day to be able to follow and study the Diabi. When the Diabi would settle to sleep, that was when she got in and settled her own camp. Something light and easy in case the Diabi decided to move during the day. It was hard; especially the first night and she had to get extremely close to get some good sketches. More than a few times she got too close and was almost caught.

Esmeralda was pretty sure her sketches were going to be horrible to decipher once she got back home, but at least she could commit what she saw her to memory. It was always better than nothing. As another week went by, Esmeralda hit the jackpot. She stumbled on her first Diabi nest out of pure luck and she had just enough time to draw it before the mother came back. The Diabi must have smelled her because it began searching and Esmeralda decided it would be best if she left. There was no point in dying here after all.

When Esmeralda was back at in the Celestial Plane after almost a whole month of research, she was stunned by her sketches and notes. It would probably take her another whole week to get everything in order and redo all of her very messy sketches. Once cleaned up though, she was going to make a killing with these when she presented her final work. Esmeralda was looking forward to the day she could stay home and retire and simply teach or something as a Master. That day was a long ways but every day she crept a little more forward.
