By the time Zachary gets back to his Duplex the next time, there is a small package on his doorstep.
Inside is a book and a video, both of the same title:

Not Amused This is a delicate subject! Delicate! Zach slipped up the steps of his duplex, dutifully avoiding making any noise near Valentine's door. Lunch had been a disaster, and all he wanted to do was figure out if it was possible to sleep forever. He needed a break from consciousness, and therefore, worrying about just how close the scissors were getting to his thread of life.
He fumbled in his right pocket for his key, and stuck it into the lock after a few misses. Despite the humid heat of the island, he was shaking. Finally, the key slipped into the lock and with a neat turn the lock clicked open and he pushed against the door. His wings stretched a little before folding against his back again. As he moved to go inside his duplex, his long toes brushed against a package. He looked down in confusion before stooping to pick it up. It was rather small and light. In the usual fashion of recieving unexpected things, he gave the package a small shake. It didn't sound like whatever was in there was something alive. He'd heard, through word of mouth, of people being mailed poisonous snakes. Good thing the sender hadn't poked any holes.
After shutting the door behind him, he used his left hand to neatly slice through the wrapping. Odds were, it wasn't Kaveri who'd left it. There were no post offices around here, mainly because the first thing anyone on the island would send to the mainland would be an SOS. He slipped the wrapping off completely and crushed it in his left hand, while holding the book and video in his right.
How quaint.
He studied the title again. "The Reluctant Dragon." If it weren't for the situation he was currently in, he may have found it amusing on some low level, perhaps a nonexistant one. However, having the threat of death or something almost as gruesome hanging over you was not conducive to humor. His expression went from wide eyed to practically blank in moments, thanks to how little expression could be read from his inhuman eyes.

A Rabbit's Funeral Notes pertaining to the burial of a common brown rabbit.
- sketch of the grave goes here -
Well, apparently Kaveri's more superstitious than I expected. I mean, I can see the deed haunting me (as it ought to) but not the rabbit itself. Maybe it's just my lack of faith, but... that aside, I'm a little curious about this whole burial thing. I had to keep a lot of this committed to memory, so I'll have to excuse the flimsy details.
First she dug a hole... then we put the rabbit in the hole. It wasn't very deep, so she made a mound of it instead. Then the odd stuff happened.
She grabbed some rocks out of a pretty big pile in the middle of that clearing and started putting them down in rows on top of it. If that wasn't enough, she even drew some weird letters in front of it. I'm fascinated, but I have no idea what it's about. She comes from the USA, so you'd think she'd be of a mainstream religion, but this island does strange things to people.
I'm just glad we didn't desecrate that creature any more than we did. I guess I should apologize to that old guy we saw, but I'm not sure he ever wants to see us again.
I'm not feeling very well myself, thinking about everything that's been going on the past few days. I've got no one to talk to about things. Normally that's easy to cope with... but with a death threat on me, I'm terrified. There's no shame in admitting that, I think, and besides, I wasn't telling the whole truth to Dr. Duvert when they took me to the lab. I know I'll have to tak to him eventually, but he keeps shifting between being somewhat bearable as a human being to insane beyond measure. Maybe he can change if I just explain a little bit to him. It's nothing they haven't already figured out from watching the video of when I sliced that rabbit and then... licked blood off my claws.
Don't know if I can control myself any more. But it's true, if I don't try... I'm not going to become any less of a damned dragon.
A little bit of the night I supposedly attacked Aubrey can be remembered, though it's nothing useful... and part of my memory is the same as that tale he spun for Moreau. It's creepy, almost, that they can knock you out and change you and you would never remember a thing. For all I know, the next time I go to sleep I might never wake up again. Hell, I'm sure a camera is reading this right over my shoulder, and I've had enough of that. I've got to go... I think I need a cup of coffee or something.

RP with AveryAvery Calder Avery had been hiding in his duplex for a few days after his change, not wanting others to see him and generally still feeling sore anyway. Of course, he knew he couldn't hide away forever - and he hated being cooped up for too long, anyway. Even more so now. He decided to head out for a walk and get some fresh air. He reached for his boots, but hesitated, remembering his new claws. Well. He guessed he would just have to go barefoot, then - that's what the new pads on the bottom of his feet for anyway, right? With a sigh, Avery left his duplex, heading towards the general center area of the village. Zachary Bloodstone Zach slid out of his duplex door and into the boiling tropical heat, carefully locking up before he left. He breathed a few times. Nothing. The allergy medicine he'd finally given in to getting from Delia the other day worked as well as the stuff he'd recently run out of. There hadn't been any unpleasant and unwanted side effects either, to his relief. Living on this island was not easing his paranoia.
After descending the stairs he paused. Unlike most days, when he'd simply gone shirtless, he had a thin white shirt on. It had a couple of tears in the back that he'd forced his peculiar wings through. It was going to get completely sweat soaked if he stayed outside too long. To his dismay, he figured out that the places on him that he'd been growing scales, and the arm, tail, and wings that were completely covered, could not sweat. In exchange, his open skin seemed to work overtime to make up for it.
He'd made it halfway across the village when he spotted a very furry someone. If it hadn't been for the blue streaks in the other guy's hair he may not have recognized Avery at all.
Avery Calder Avery's ears perked up when he heard someone behind him, and he turned around - and instantly froze. Oh, s**t. Just the person he wanted to see - the crazy dragon man. Avery felt conflicted - should he run? Would he run fast enough? Surely the doctors wouldn't have let him loose if he was that dangerous, right? And they could just zap him if he tried anything... Avery relaxed - but only slightly. His body still felt a little tense; he was ready to run for it, just in case. It was then he realized he'd just been standing there staring the whole time... he figured he should probably say something now that they both have noticed each other. "Uh... hi." He resisted the urge to call him dragon-breath. No need to provoke him, that's for sure. Zachary Bloodstone Zach didn't know what to say. Even if he had to get used to these changes, seeing the expressions of fear on peoples' faces at the sight of him was haunting. He stared back at the terrified furry Avery with a look that detailed how little he was enjoying the little meeting already. A few alternative courses of action came to mind, but none of them seemed human enough for him to follow through - especially not the odd one that had to do with sticking his ear fins out.
The seconds wore on and he grudgingly had to respond. Even the strong desire to run was fading gradually. He could do this. He just had to make sure there was a nice distance between them, perhaps six feet would work. This was what he got for being turned into an unstable predator, after all.
"Er, hey... it looks like you've... you've changed... I guess..."
Avery Calder "Yeah... just a few days ago, actually. Hurt like a b***h, as usual." Well, this was good. At least there was no biting going on yet. "Looks like you've changed too..." He couldn't help noticing the small wings on Zach's back. Avery had to admit to himself that he almost looked... well, cool. I mean, how many people could say they were a dragon? Then again, it wasn't so fun when it was forced upon you - and when it was painful. "So I heard you nearly killed one of the doctors," he blurted out - and then his eyes widened, raising his hand to cover his mouth. He hadn't meant to say that. Out loud, anyway. Avery wished he didn't have such a big mouth sometimes. Zachary Bloodstone "Ouch. You've got painkillers, right? At least you're staying a mammal... shouldn't be any nasty surprises." As bad as it was to think about, there wasn't a whole lot he could do to avoid thinking about what Amaya had said about all the reptile islanders having a very bald fate. He frowned somewhat. "Yeah... it was a while ago though. No idea when it'll happen again. I'd hope never, but... that's just asking for too much out of life."
Avery's ears looked an awful lot like a dog's. He wasn't about to press for what animal Avery was becoming - in the end, it'd probably be quite clear.
The next comment stung. He felt a sort of heat creep into his face, embarassment at the whole ordeal. How had AVERY found that out? Zach had only told two people, and neither of them had already heard about it. He wanted to believe Kaveri, that it was nothing but a trick, but... either way, this was a pretty harsh rumor. "And, ah... who told you that?"
Avery Calder "Yeah, I got some... they didn't help much, though," Avery frowned. Maybe Dr. Frost didn't give him strong enough medicine? He would just have to ask for a stronger dosage the next time he saw her. His ears pressed back against his head when Zach said he hoped it would never happen again. "I wish it wouldn't happen again, either. It's... scary. And I'm not so sure about there not being any nasty surprises just because I'm a mammal - Awen told me about this guy, Pyroth; he's turning into a canine, too. But it looks like he won't be able to walk on two legs anymore, soon enough..." Avery had been reassured, at least, that Tim wouldn't leave him if that happened - but the thought still terrified him. "Sorry," he mumbled. "I didn't mean to bring that up... Chubbs told me about it." Avery glanced around, as if he might be able to spot the cameras, and he moved in a little closer to Zach, leaning in. "Not that I feel bad for the lab tech, though," he told him quietly. Zachary Bloodstone "Well... you should mostly stop hurting in about a week..." He crossed his arms. "And I suppose you've got a while yet before they do this again... all the people that look really animal-like have been here for almost a year."
"Pyroth? Oh god, he did look halfway to being on four legs the last time I saw him... is that what they have planned for all of us? Just turn us completely into animals?"
"Chubbs?" he asked. He didn't know anyone on the island by that name. At least the embarassment was dying down. "Well... it's just... I don't really want to talk about it..." He was tempted to say he didn't feel a whole lot of remorse himself, but he was probably being watched, and any excuse to kill him would probably work for the doctors. All he could do was give Avery a nervous glance.
Avery Calder "You've seen Pyroth, then? I've never actually met him yet... Do you think they'll really do that to us? At least you're a dragon... so you might end up still able to walk, who knows?" Avery shrugged. Dragons weren't exactly real creatures, but dogs? They definitely walked on all fours. Avery noticed he seemed nervous about the subject, so he decided to drop it. "So... uh... this is an improvement, I think! You haven't tried to attack me yet," he laughed, nervously. Maybe the other times were just flukes? Zachary Bloodstone "Yeah, but it was a really long time ago, had to have been at least a couple of months... maybe they've, uh, fixed the problem or something? I haven't heard of anyone else ending up like that." He shifted uneasily. There wasn't a whole lot you could expect when becoming a fantasy creature. The wings he had guessed, but the everything from the color of his scales to the beginnings of spikes on his back and tail were all a very big surprise. "I... don't know. Right now I'm just not getting near my intercom. You can probably ask, though. I'll just enjoy this whole two-legged existence for as long as I can."
"No, and I never wanted to." He half-closed his eyes. "We both got unlucky. Apparently this whole 'dragon' thing isn't quite as perfect as it was intended to be. Whenever I change..." He shrugged, holding his palms upward. "I'm sure you get the idea. That's been the story with everyone I've met in the days after my changes - even with Dr. Lockheart."
Avery Calder "Yeah... I'll probably just ask, then," Avery said, rubbing his arm. He felt nervous about asking, though - nervous about what the answer would be. He wasn't sure if he would prefer to be surprised or not. "Well, I'm glad it was nothing personal," he offered the dragon man a smile. "Maybe we can start over, then, and be friends?" ... and that was when he noticed Zach had held out two hands, not just one. "Zach... your arm... it grew back!?" Avery certainly didn't remember him having two arms, at least. He noticed it was completely scaled, unlike Zach's other arm. It must have happened the last time he transformed.

Inside the bathroom, the shower was giving off the usual high-pitched squeaking that accompanied a long blast of scalding water. Zach wasn't in there; he was waiting for the mirror of the bathroom to be fogged up enough that he couldn't see anything. After slinging a towel around his neck, he opened the door to a blast of steam. It felt good to the reptilian part of him, though it was difficult for him to distinguish it. The shower was turned off and the door closed, and with a routine flick of the hand cold water came pouring into the sink. He splashed some on his face to wake himself up.
Thoughts were confined to an inner monologue. Thinking aloud was not his specialty. Besides, the last thing he needed was for some dope looking through one of the cameras to see him conversing with nothing. As long as it stayed in his skull, it was safe from their meticulous records. Even if the initial scare had worn off, the thought of being under any sort of scrutiny still made him uncomfortable.
They're right. Avery, Dr. Duvert, Rex. I should be grateful for this. It's... it's different than I would have expected, but it's an arm. I can't deny that. And they said they'd fix my serum. I'm not violent... just... not human. And neither is anyone else here. He finished brushing his teeth, and picked up a cup by the sink to fill with water. Things had been going suspiciously normal lately. Well, except for the odd thing he'd seen Rex doing to a guy in the cafeteria. I don't have to... agree with the doctors... but if I don't at least face these things, this place will drive me insane. Kaveri's some blue and white bird now. I don't even know what I look like any more.
He hadn't looked in his reflection for the longest time. He hadn't wanted to see it. The first time he'd looked after a change had taught him that it was a stupid thing to do to himself. Slowly, his eyes moved from the water upward to the fogged mirror. He forced himself to stop and instead admire the intricate weave of the towel he'd thrown onto the counter. It was.... white. Very white. Hardly captivating.
His right palm smacked against the mirror and rubbed a hole into the precious layer of condensed water that barred him from seeing what he was. He'd seen this twisted reflection, but that had been at least a month before. Things were different somehow. He didn't want to just know that this visage was himself. He had to accept it, and accept that whatever didn't already bear reptilian features would eventually. "Oh..."
There was something strange about his face now. Not unfamilar, but unexpected. It looked sunken. Under his slitted yellow eyes were dark circles, telltale signs of how little sleep he got. He wasn't too thrilled with sleeping on his stomach. Gripping the counter with his scaly hand, he ran a couple of fingers through the beginnings of an untamed beard that hadn't been shaved. The horns still thrust out of his skull, longer than he remembered them being.
It took him a moment to notice he'd been holding his breath, and let it out in a whoosh. His wings rustled behind him. That was it. He'd looked, he'd seen, and with the pain of the transformation long past it hadn't gone as horribly as it could have. He still had a fairly human face, as long as he didn't smile too widely. What did dragons look like to the mad doctor? He had to draw a line somewhere for his curiosity. He'd find out anyway.
Out of the bathroom and back into the bedroom. He was already drained. The dragon flopped onto the messed-up bed, his long tail swinging over the edge of the bed. After yawning, he mumbled quietly, "Well, today's the beginning of the rest of my life."
The whole twist of fate that had led him to the island, he supposed, was the only form good luck would take for him. A brand new arm and his old life able to be thrown away like a piece of useless garbage... all for the low, low price of his humanity. Whatever humanity was supposed to be. Dr. Duvert had dismissed it and Zach's other idealistic explanations for why he hated the island as nothing more than fanciful words. There hadn't been a cause he'd rallied for, just indignation.
Maybe that was all his short-lived vendetta had been for - words, and words alone.
