After taking a moment to look at the other students and see the girl run past him, Evan decided he should do his introduction.

"My name is Evan, and my player is called Kyuu. Let's see..." His amethyst eyes darted around to the students and to the professor, who still didn't seem like a professor to him, except for the fact that he had stated all the information. "Not much to tell other than I like to draw... And I love to make friends, so if anyone is willing..." He put his hands into the pockets of his dark blue jeans, feeling the pens and pencils nearly stab him he drew them out again. His face was red now, so he quickly made for an empty seat, his unzipped red hoodie trailed behind him slightly. Once he was seated he immediately had a pencil in hand and was rummaging in the bag he brought for his Sketchbook. He needed to draw the beautiful scenery before he lost the mental image.

“Oh, I wasn’t trying to get out of doing anything, I just didn’t want to disturb the class with my late entrance and, um, yeah I guess I’ll go ahead and introduce myself then.” Ella-Brook began explaining herself rapidly, but her speech faltered when she realized it sounded like an excuse.

Following the directions of the professor, Ella-Brook walked to the front of the classroom. She could feel her face and ears heat as she looked out at her classmates. “Hi, everybody,” she began with a smile and a slightly awkward wave, “I’m Ella-Brook. That’s Ella-Brook with a hyphen, and the Brook doesn’t have an e. It’s not Ella or Brook. Ella-Brook.” She felt like she was rambling. “Or you can call me E.B if that’s easier for you. Um, just whatever, I don’t really care. Okay. Things about me… I’m eighteen. Um, I like reading, I love learning, my favorite color is purple, I like spring more than summer or any of the other seasons really, I like listening to music, I wish I could play piano better, I like science and math and history and just about every academic subject. I like movies. I like plays and TV shows. Um, just general stuff, really.” She knew she was rambling, but she just didn’t know how to stop. “And, ahh I guess I’ll tell you about my player or controller or puppeteer or whatever it is she’s called. Her name’s Deoxyribose-42. She’s been RPing on Gaia since ’06 and on another website before that. She signed up for this because she wants to be a better RPer and a better writer in general. I think she’s alright except for when she’s torturing her characters by killing off their loved ones and um, yeah, I think… I think I’ll stop there. Thanks.”

With a small smile Ella-Brook scurried back to her seat wondering if there was a certain point at which the heat from all the blood rushing to your head due to embarrassment could cause your head to explode. She didn’t know why she’d kept talking or why she’d thanked everyone after she’d finally managed to stop talking. Being on the spot like that in front of a crowd made her incredibly nervous, though for some reason she didn’t at all mind asking or answering questions in class.

At least the rough part’s over. E.B thought as she attempted to shake off her feelings of embarrassment and return to her state of studious attentiveness. She hoped she wouldn’t have to go through another ordeal like that anytime soon.

The sudden rush in activity perked Mr. Vay up a bit and he smiled at everyone that spoke then decided to address them in reverse order. Which meant he gave the little not-ninja a grin first.

"Quite alright," he purred with a nod for her excuse then listened quietly to the rest and was still grinning by the end. "So we've a shy girl #3 then," he winked at the other two then gave E.B. a comforting smile. "That's alright too. Be good examples of individualization of an archetype. Glad to have you in class with us," he gave the girl another nod then looked to Evan.

"Making friends is one of the objectives of this RP actually. Want to encourage community and all that while at the same time improving your skills," he smiled politely. "Good to have you too. Artists are always fun people to know," Vay's grin turned a little coy then he looked to Fang last.

"Funny you would ask that. The faculty and crew were just discussing this and as of yet have not come to a definite conclusion on the matter. However, it is likely that the Academy will get a subforum if it remains to be successful. There is some talk about a major guild overhaul that might put the Academy in the spotlight and make it a very big part of the guild. We're kind of in the testing phases of this right now though so nothing's really decided on that.

"As for what happens after this class, you will be let out onto the Academy campus (which E.B.'s wanderings gave you a taste of) and allowed to roam and interact with each other while the faculty prepares the next class. During this time you will register for your next class by PMing the Registrar with a list of classes you are interested in taking. She will place you into classes based on those lists. Some of you will be put into LIT 101 if you don't clean up your grammar. Once enough students are signed up for a class the faculty member in charge will begin their class much like I started this one. By then we hope to have a subforum so each class should be a thread. Then you go through that class until it's done and you're let back out onto campus where the process will repeat. Just like a real school.

"There is talk about graduating students to faculty if they are interested and maybe making sig badges for Academy classes and having transcripts actually mean something but, again, that's all talk right now. If you have ideas for that please post them to the OOC thread so we can discuss." The teacher paused for breath then looked to the rest of the class.

"Come on, more questions."

At some sudden movement on his desk, Zane removed his eyes from his phone's screen to find a treat sitting there invitingly. His eyes furrowed in confusion and he looked up at the teacher who was dressed in what Zane had previously been wearing. His eyes jumped to the lollipop and to the teacher again as he tried to process the situation. He really hadn't been paying attention to any of the praise he had been showering her with, but he knew the basic gist of it.

"Is an APC the same thing as an NPC...?" he mumbled to himself as he pocketed his phone, not realizing that the teacher could probably pick up his utterances in spite of the volume. He remembered her using that term before. Pawns, she sometimes called them. Mooks.

He unwrapped the candy warily. For some reason he was being rewarded for something that she had done, and that didn't sit well with him. He was sure that his initial desire of wanting a lollipop was her doing anyway. She didn't want him thinking rebellious thoughts such as... whatever it was he had been thinking about earlier. The fact that he was awarded the thing he most very well wanted made him wonder whether she and the teacher were in on some conspiracy plot together or something against all of them, and if not that, then against him. The notion of it ground his gears so much, but nothing could come about him stressing over it, so instead he turned his attention to the new girl beside him. He wasn't really interested in all of that 'guild' stuff the teach was rambling about. That was her territory.

"...So what made you late?" But before the question was even out, Zane already had the blame centered on this Deoxy person. RPers were evil.

And now there was a fly buzzing around his head. This day just couldn't get any worse.

Alex was growing bored again now that his conversation with Alice had ended. He had taken up staring at the ceiling and spacing out, going off to his own imaginary fantasy, this one regarding giant robots. He flickered out of things when some late students showed up.
He gave them a half-hearted wave to the newcomers, the strange new guy named Zane, another new guy named Evan who apparently was an artist, and a girl named Ella-Brook who seemed to be the more study-focused of the group so far judging on her choice of action with the notebook. Dragn prodded him again and he shifted in his seat. He pulled a notebook from his pack, but began to write about his giant robot daydream instead of the class subject. Dragn threw his hands up in the air in frustration and remembered a question he had been saving. He prodded Alex again and his character spoke up without taking his eyes off of his work.
"You mentioned layers earlier. Do you think you could go into a little more detail about them? Usually Dragn creates characters with two "layers" if he's understanding things right. With an outside layer to show publicly and a secret layer that is only shown to certain others. What other types are there?"

Having briefly nodded off sitting up, Mr. Vay jerked awake with a little snort at Zane's muttered question. The teacher blinked at the class then squinted to the clock on the back wall. With a frown he tapped his watch then just took the thing off and set it on his desk as he got up from his perch and walked towards the board again.

"Sorry bout that guys, lost track of time for a bit," he mumbled to the class as he scrubbed a hand through the back of his hair before stopping at the board and picking up the eraser but stayed facing the students.

"An APC, or All-Player Character, is a special kind of NPC, Non-Player Character, which is free for everyone to control, not just the GM. As most NPCs are reserved for GM or GM designated players' use only, it is good to have a few APCs for instances where the character's role is minor, not well developed, and generally inconsequential. Having the reccuring but open character, such as Effie May the blue haired lady that brought you all here, adds a sense of continuity to the setting and frees the GM up from doing little tasks like escorting and waiting tables," the teacher flashed Zane a smile for the not really asked question then grinned at Alex.

"Good question given that you're going to be using layers in the next assignment. Layers are the facets of personality we don't show just everyone. Breaking it down to two layers is incredibly simplified but the gist of the concept. However, most people have a lot more than two layers. Most people have a layer for almost every aspect of their life, not just private and personal. Me, for example, I have the 'teacher' layer which you guys are seeing now. I also have the 'husband' layer which I show my wife. And the 'player' layer I show when gaming, and a 'GM' layer for those rare occasions I actually run a game. I also have the 'random stranger on the street' layer and the supposedly entertaining 'road rage' layer and several others it is too late to think of. . . such as the 'sleep deprived and in need of coffee' layer. These are all little aspects of a person's personality not readily apparent at a surface glance. Within each of these layers are personality traits such as my teacher self is very casual, laid back, friendly, a little flirtatious, and sometimes snarky, but mostly tolerant. These differ greatly from my road rage layer in which I become an impatient, aggressive, foul mouthed, judgmental, and selfish but reportedly hilarious lunatic," he finished with a shrug. "Layers are sometimes called 'hats' or 'masks' for the allegory of 'putting them on' when you change roles from, say, gridlocked driver to teacher. I use the layers term though because as you get to know a person better you slowly peel away their layers to get down to the person's core - who they are when they are alone. For most people this core is a privileged area where only a select few are allowed into, in my case my wife. Only she gets to know just how crazy I really am," he flashed the class a winking grin then turned to the board.

"Moving on now. . ." Vay quickly cleaned off the bad chart, leaving the list of good things, then wrote in the next assignment:

1) Give your character a balanced mix of strengths and weaknesses. Use layers to add depth to these.

2) Give your character a background.

Then he turned to the class again with a smile. "This is the first part of a unit in which we will make you better characters," he nodded at the students. "We'll start with strengths and weaknesses but really the order isn't important - that's just the first one I randomly decided on. So, review what was said about giving your character balance and then utilize layers to do that. Right now I'm seeing a few strengths and weaknesses in each of you but there's bound to be more so dig deep and find them," he paused briefly to add on the board at the end of that part the date '4/13/12' and tilted his head. "Oh hey, Friday the 13th," he mused before turning to the class again. "This one will be due Friday. The 13th. Have fun with that," he gave them a wink then added another date to the second item on the board, '4/16/12' this time.

"The first part should be done here in class, just stand up and ramble them off as soon as you get them all figured out. This second part," he tapped the board at the second item, "should take longer so you have until Monday to finish it. And by 'should take longer' I mean 'should be longer'. Here is the place I am actually expecting length. I don't necessarily expect prose, in fact please don't, but I do want a sizable amount of content. As suggested in what was said about backgrounds, give me a timeline with the major events explained in paragraph form but the rest of it listed out. Be sure to keep your backgrounds appropriate to the RP and consistent with your character.

"This part will be turned in by PM. Just so you don't have to go waving your personal histories at the class." He flashed a wry grin. "Now get to it. And if you've got questions go ahead and ask in here."

D'cund, for once, was quick to respond. This was mostly in part due to his creator being in the right place at the right time. He stood and rumbled his throat.

"I queshun da wisdom ohf givin' ar weknesses awah."
I question the wisdom of giving our weaknesses away.

The rock man began to sit down before the other voice spoke, "no, stand up and speak, this is a learning experience."

"Whut weknesses do I haav?"

"How about lack of sociability?"

A loud striking noise came from inside D'cund with a reverberating hum following. These noises were mixed with a shriek and the little man darted out from D'cund, hitting the desk.

"Fein, but I wehll spek for mehsehlf."

"Meh weknesses ar ahs follahs; stubbahn, slo-thenke, bad-enklish, stranj apparance, soshul inepitute."

Stubborn, slow-thinker, bad English, off-putting appearance/voice, social ineptitude.

D'cund probably had more, but the growing look of aggressiveness on his face made Sigma speak up, "alright they get the point, give them some strengths."

"Strenks; stronk, intelagent, wies..." the rock monster stopped and tilted his head, "I em unsho."

Strong, intelligent, and wise.

Sigma spoke, "You can manipulate the earth."

"Ah yes." And with that D'cund sat. The little man tried to retreat into D'cund but found that the rock had shut himself to any of Sigma's intrusions.

"What is the meaning of this D'cund?" rasped out the little man.

D'cund smiled and hummed. Sigma's face turned to a look of anger. "What! I said I don't need to do this, he can't make me..." he growled out at D'cund and the rock monster kept right on smiling. Sigma closed his eyes and took a deep breath. With a sigh he turned and faced the rest of the class.

As he did this he began to grow and took the steps to do so safely; hopping to the floor and kneeling. When he finished growing he stood tall with a look of discontent over his pale face. With a hand he pushed his shaggy white hair out of the way of one of his black-and-yellow eyes.

His voice, lower, raspier, did more to portray his unhappiness, "alright, alright." his raggedy lab coat shifted over his wiry frame as he leaned back against the wall. "My weaknesses; attitude, curiosity..." Sigma rolled his eyes, "my own brand of social ineptitude, and sheer lack of caring for the human condition."

He shifted again and crossed his arms. "My strengths are speed, curiosity, acidic blood, fierce loyalty, and absolutely begrudging compassion for those I even mildly care about."

With this end he sat down in the desk next to D'cund and huffed.

Sigma is also rather shy and has a soft spot for animals. D'cund is most comfortable around large amounts of knowledge.

D'cund fears the destruction of knowledge and winces at the sight of breaking rocks.

Sigma fears death, water, and large reptiles. He is also rather fond of the night sky.

"Hey! We can read that you know!" Sigma shouted up to the ceiling. "Next you're going to tell the class I like long walks on the beach."

"Eht ehs best naut to tee ohf ar crater." D'cund tried to whisper to Sigma.

"Well he's the one giving us away..." Sigma sounded hurt.

"It's frustration!" totally hurt.
"rargh!"

D'cund laughed again.

Mayura cleared her throat and stood up, but didn't walk to the front, redness showing on her face, but a bit lighter this time, she took a deep breath and started talking "Well weakness, I am a bit shy, but that last only when I don't know people, I am also bad at making conversation and I..well hate dark places.
As for strengths.." she paused a bit trying to think a bit while she scratch her scalp a bit "Well I think I'm good at cooking" she let out sigh since she wasn't really able of thinking of strengths that she could mention to the class, "I'm also a very patient person" she let out another sight and sat down feeling a bit embarrassed "guess it would've been better if I had waited" she muttered.

Evan was busy with his drawing, but had listened as intently as he could. When he noticed the others begin their assignment he figured it would be best to get his done and out of the way. He closed the sketchbook for another time and placed his pencil carefully on the book, and he stood up to share the first part of the assignment.

"To start..." he paused to think for a second. "My strengths are being a decent artist, usually being in a good mood... I have an easy sense of humor, and I am always willing to make friends," he finished. A grin appeared on his face, but it didn't last long. "My weaknesses... Would be... Not really wanting to speak in front of a group, I am most of the time too quiet, and I am pretty independent, but I guess that is a strength as well." He smiled but sat down quickly.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:42 am

Tombstone nodded. "Strengths aren't too hard to guess for me, I would imagine. I shoot fast and straight. I'm confident, independent. I'm one of the last people who can write in Ilefi, the reverse engineered script of pre-apoc Elven, and I can speak Elven." He smiled.

"Weaknesses, now. One of my main weaknesses is that I'm wanted in a few places. Not being able to show your face in a town on account of that you emptied its local bank's vault out once... or twice...." He chuckled. "Anyway, it can be mighty inconvenient. Also, from my run-ins with Violet and Scarlet, it's pretty clear that I'm disinclined give full and fair credit to people who are nearly as good..." he winced at what he said next, looking more pained than he had for most of the many and varied times he'd been shot. "... Who are as good as I am. Speaking of Violet and Scarlet, you'll hear more about them later, but they're a bounty hunter and a train robber I've, well..." he turned a little red, though his posture remained absolutely unchanged, but for a sudden stiffness. "Yeah, having, er, on-and-off... relations? With two women who are archenemies? Bad idea. I do not recommend it. I perhaps ought to work on controlling my, ah, impulses more, but there haven't been many opportunities or me to indulge. Last off, my loner ways may leave me not needing help, but I also don't really know what to do with it when I have it. I don't play well with others. I've probably alienated a few people who've been well-meaning, but it's a small price for avoiding false friends."

Alex was of the same mindset of D'cund, but spoke up from his writing, allowing himself a quick break from his scribbling.
"I'd say I'm pretty level headed and tend not to be offended easily. I think things through before making decisions and use logic to make my important choices. I'm also pretty laid back so nothing really bothers me when things don't go my way either. I get along with others too, recognizing how people like or dislike being treated.
On the other hand, my laid back attitude tends to bite me a lot too. I may know the right thing to do, but I don't always get on things right away. So this could also be a weakness too. I'm pretty blunt in my speech so I tend to offend or annoy people sometimes."
He returned to his notebook, though this time he began to outline his backstory. This was going to be fun as he could add some interesting things to make his character more interesting.

Fang puffed up a bit at the mention of strengths. "Well, not to brag or anything, but I happen to be a very good hunter. Living in the middle of a forest has its ups I suppose. I can also communicate with any kind of feline which I think is pretty neat. I am a very friendly person but I don't talk a lot seeing as no one accepted my view of things back home." Fang concluded trying to hide his weaknesses, but Stealth spoke for him.
"On the other hand, he is a bit of a spazz, has a habit of annoying people who can't keep up with him, and he is a bit of a troublemaker, refusing to go with the status quo as it doesn't keep with him."

Vay listened to the students patiently as they listed out their strengths and weaknesses then stood up in a lull and smiled at the class.

"Let's have a look at what we've got so far," he turned to D'cund. "Rocky's said his weaknesses are: stubbornness, slow-thinker, bad English, off-putting appearance/voice, and social ineptitude. His strengths are: physically strong, intelligent, wise, and some sort of earth magic. M'kay, that's a good start. Those are decently balanced traits but there's not a lot of layer to it. I could have guessed at most of those," he paused then gave a grin, "Now what you listed in your subtext. That's got layers. Out of respect I won't quote that to the class but you should enjoy the library," he gave the rock monster a wink then smiled at the not-so-little-anymore creepy hand dude.

"Your stated strengths and weaknesses are a little more layered. That acidic blood thing is interesting. Not completely sure how that's a strength but I suppose it would be punishment for anyone who makes you bleed," he paused with a shrug, "Good to include it somewhere. And your subtext is amusing. You will probably enjoy the observatory." Mr. Vay flashed a smile then turned to Mayura.

"Don't sweat it darlin' so long as you're trying I'm here to help. Now you got plenty of weakness to cover. The crippling shyness, lack of self confidence, unfamiliarity with the common language, I'd guess you're not very athletic either. Probably awkward in social situations and I'm gonna go with a little naive as well. Sheltered at the least." He paused to give her a coy grin. "Correct me if I'm wrong." Then he leaned back against his desk. "Stereotypically you would be smart, love books, a hard worker, highly dedicated, and compassionate for strengths. Patience and good at cooking could also fall under the archetype," he nodded toward Alice then E.B. "Shy Girls 1 and 3 are likely to have a lot of the same. Now tell me something they are not going to list. Something unique to you. Your trouble with the language is a good, unique weakness (even if that's from the player) so give me a singular talent - something you can do that no one else in the room can." He paused, "I'll give you some time to think about that," then turned to Evan.

"A non-emo, non-tortured artist," he grinned wryly, "Now that's an original." The teacher laughed briefly then shook his head, "Sorry, married to an artist. So. . . Ok. We've got a shy guy. I'm seeing a trend here. Also I'm going to address yours along with Alex," Vay gave the boy a smile.

"So, now let's look at Alex. He's level headed and laid back. And level headed. And laid back. And laid back and level headed," Vay grinned then shook his head. "Sorry, I've not had coffee. . . I think Alex's weaknesses might include 'repetitive' but lazy and blunt work too." The teacher paused to give Alex then Evan a grin then tilted his head at Fang.

"Kitty here did a little better but, no offense guys, I'm looking for a bit more. D'cund and Sigma only spoke a few qualities but Jikial listed more in subtext. I'm fine if you just don't want to share them with the class but please give me more to work with here. Put it in the subtext if you don't want the other students to know. The faculty can read subtext. The rest of you," he gave the class a warning look, "Can not. Understood?" Vay gave the class a moment to absorb that before going on.

"Also I don't want you to restrict these lists to the realms of what a real person could have. In case y'all hadn't noticed, we got magic here. Take the opportunity to have fun. I'll tell ya if you go too far but yer not goin' at all. Now ya don't have to drop in something fancy if you don't want to but just don't be afraid to. We've not really established your backgrounds yet so a bit of magic can be added in even if it wasn't part of the original concept. If you'd like some of that but don't want it in your background then state a potential to learn some sort of fancy thing in your strengths. Also fancy things can be weaknesses. Curses for instance are very fun.

"And, please, someone give me some physical stuff. I'm not a jock but damn, at least one of you has to be decent at some sport. Even if that sport is just Try Not to Get Stabbed. Skills are good strengths too. Evan's artistry is a good one of that, and Mayura's cooking, and Fang's hunting but you should all have at least a few different skills. Maybe you're a dancer or gymnast and all graceful. Maybe you're in theater and can do makeup and costumes. Maybe you're a linguist and can understand languages. Maybe you're a hacker and get computers. Maybe you're a musician," he gave a big grin at the last then shook his head. "Let's just do more with these in general.

"Conversely weaknesses can be lack of any skill. Maybe you're a clutz. Maybe you are incapable of lying. We've already got two with language barriers. Maybe you're computer illiterate. Maybe you can't carry a tune in a bucket." He paused then turned to the elf.

"As for you. . . I'm pretty sure you're holding out on us but those are great weaknesses. Perfect examples of how circumstance can be a flaw. Also they say a lot about you. Two girls," he grinned with a quick thumbs up. "But yes" he stifled the expression to a more appropriate tone. "Circumstances can make things both hard and easy for characters and well, that's what weaknesses and strengths are, respectively. Anything that makes things harder is a weakness. Anything that makes things easier is a strength.

"Now you've got a definition let's give this another try. Also those of you that haven't spoken up should do so."
PostPosted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 6:58 pm

Dragn was working furiously on the backstory, trying to make things sound normal and ordinary when the teacher mentioned magic was acceptable. He cricked his neck and wrote the letters A L L O F M Y H A T E into the paper in front of him before tearing the damn thing to shreds. Alex looked up curiously and Dragn seethed but set to work on a new epic, laughing maniacally as he did so.
Alex shrugged to the teacher. He had to be level headed and laid back after the things he had been through. Hell this was the longest he'd been in a class room without something bursting in and demanding his head or realizing the room was filled with large one eyed monsters that strangely looked like young men. Very muscly young men.....probably should have seen that one coming on second thought. Of course when he had turned 18 things had changed, but not much. He had tried hard to be normal. Very hard. After a certain point though, he had said to hell with it. If things happened they happened, he'd just react and survive.
Of course he'd learned very quickly that if he was the strange jumpy kid in the corner who threw things whenever someone shouted or a loud noise was made then he lost friends rather quickly. He'd also learned that being the silent one who ignored life as we know it didn't work well either for finding/making/keeping friends. So he had changed himself to accept all and reject no one. After all if they all knew who he was or what he apparently had inside him they might do a little more than reject him. Being isolated from others sucked. His father felt otherwise, but he didn't want that part of his father.
He did feel he could mention some things though and not be looked at strangely. "I like to figure out how things work and work with machinery a lot. I can build a lot of different things if given some time and materials. Does that work?"
That was ok right? Yeah, totally innocent.

"Oh. . . Kay, now. Slow down there a bit," Vay held up a hand to Alex with a worried look. "Backgrounds in the PM. And please, for the love of God. Space your paragraphs. Also don't go hog wild on the fancy stuff. A little bit of magic is fun. Too much is just a mess. So, pace yourself there."
